33 COVER STORY

Putting the Safety of Our Children First With the tragic events that have happened around our country and in Noblesville at the end of last school year, we met with local law enforcement and school officials to hear what efforts they have undertaken to increase security in the local schools. We were happy to hear that school security is a high priority with these local officials and gratified to see the level of cooperation between them to put in place a program that that will make our schools safer. Nature Center While Expanding Minds Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of Zion Nature Center

Last month’s story on the Parks Department included an announcement on the move of the Zion Nature Center from its current location on the grounds of Eagle Elementary to its future new home that will be built upon the former Rail Trail Gardens property, approximately 25 acres of land. Mayor Haak discussed that the town would begin the bond process for this project later this year or in early 2019, so the construction could begin as early as next year.

Z

ion Nature Center is limited to its hours of operation and available programming during the school year due to it being located on the grounds of the elementary school. At its new location, parking and hours will not be an issue. Mindy Murdock, park naturalist and Nature Center manager, spoke about how the new location and larger facility will enable the Nature Center to grow its existing and immensely popular adult and children’s programs and expand its current

offerings with new programs. She also pointed out that the growth of the Nature Center will allow for additional outreach program opportunities throughout all of Zionsville’s parks. “The slogan that I throw out all the time is ‘Discover your background,’ and a lot of the programming and the exhibits that we’ve been doing have focused on that theme,” Murdock said. “We’ve added some new exhibits through grants, and we did our big fundraiser and got the box turtle log that was finished up for our 15th

anniversary. And now we are fundraising to expand onto those and hopefully have those to put into the new facility. When the new facility is built and completed, we are working on having some new exhibits to go in it as well.” With the current facility, Murdock and her staff have been functioning with very limited space and with having only weekend hours to offer their programs to 20-25 people, per program. While the design process for the new Nature Center is in the early phases of development, Mur-

dock is wasting no time on planning for the possibilities and likely advancements that will come as a result of a new and larger facility as well as a growing Parks and Recreation Department in Zionsville. “We’re still in the development phase of the campus plan that will include the Nature Center,” Murdock said. “Most likely, at a minimum, we will double in size. The hope is that instead of having small rooms like we have in our current facility, we will have a large exhibit space that will

allow us to move and change out exhibits. We are also hoping to double our program space, so we can start offering programming for more than 20-25 people; more like 50-60 people.” With more programs comes the need for more hands on deck. Murdock spoke about the inevitable need to add staff to the Nature Center as well as the Parks and Recreation Department. “Currently, I am the only educational component to the Parks Department,” she said. “We’re still very small but are slowly starting to grow. Regarding my staff, we have part-time staff that works occasional weekends and seasonal staff that come in for the summer to help with camps. The future goal for the Parks Board and the Department is that as the parks continue to grow, the recreation and education side of the Parks Department will grow as well. That would probably lead to a recreational person that comes on to help do recreation programming and probably an assistant naturalist to come on and help with the increase of programs, but there is no set timeline on how or when those

would happen. But I know these are goals that come with the opening of the new Nature Center.” For more information on the programs at Zion Nature Center, visit zionsville-in.gov/270/Zion-Nature-Center.

Home Improvement

Welcome to our

home improvement special Writer // Ann Craig-Cinnamon

Summer is quickly coming to an end, and if you have lots of things on your “to do” list still not checked off, the clock is ticking. But don’t panic! We have ideas for you from our experts on a variety of things you can do to improve and update your home before winter arrives.

H

ave you ever noticed that your furniture and wood floor have faded in color because they have been exposed to direct sunlight? JAG Window Tinting Indianapolis has the solution. Since 1993, JAG has provided window tinting and decorative solar control films for residential and commercial customers. Owner/Operator Kent Graninger says his products provide 99.9% UV protection for hardwood flooring, furnishings and even people. “Basically, the films protect your home from fading and give fantastic energy savings while actually increasing visibility and making the view crisper by taking out bad light or

glare, which can cause eye strain,” he says, adding that many homeowners are hesitant because they think film or tinting will make their home look dark or distort or darken the view. “It actually helps the view and brings out the true colors by reducing glare,” says Graninger, who says it allows you to open your blinds and enjoy your view. People also worry that it will make the home look different on the outside, which he says is not the case. He says you cannot tell a home with film from one without film and says it provides daytime privacy because people cannot see in. Another upside is energy savings. Graninger says his products can lower energy bills by as much as 15 percent. Graninger says all homeowners have windows that need and should be tinted. “If a homeowner lifts a rug or looks around AC vents and can see

Kent Graninger

a color difference in their hardwood floor, they have damage. It’s a very small cost and great benefit to tint versus replacing hardwoods and furnishings,” he says. “When I come to an appointment to give a free estimate, I bring samples of the film, so the homeowner can see how it looks on the inside of the glass as well as outside. The film is blending with the glass and looks very transparent on both sides. Once they see it they understand it”

JAG offers a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty that covers product and labor, and Graninger offers FREE ESTIMATES. He can be contacted at 317-877-8468 or by email at kent@jagtint.com.

Has your garage gotten cluttered and disorganized over the busy summer? PremierGarage powered by Tailored Living has the answer to your problem! PremierGarage is the garage flooring and cabinetry expert serving the Indianapolis area.

J

on Elliott and Tom Fleming have been providing high-quality storage and home organization systems for homes and businesses for 14 years. They offer free in-home consultations, expert measurement, innovative design and professional installation to transform homes or businesses to suit clients’ needs and specifications. Elliott says if you don’t have a mudroom area inside your house, utilizing space in the garage is

the perfect solution. “A mud bench with lockers or cubbies offers organized storage for the entire family. It can include hooks for hanging jackets, backpacks and sports equipment along with open shelves or cabinets for storing shoes and other personal items,” he says. Elliott says one area that is often ignored in a garage is the floor, and that’s where their garage floor coatings make a big difference. “As part of our Total Garage Enhancement, we offer custom

garage floor coatings, which add beauty and utility, giving your garage a finished look and making it a more user-friendly space,” says Elliott. “With a wide variety of color and finish options, you can coordinate your floor with garage cabinets, your car or even your favorite team’s logo.” All garage flooring options are designed to withstand the high traffic and heavy use that a garage endures on a daily basis. “The low-maintenance floor is easier to care for than concrete, creating the ideal floor for a busy garage,” he says. PremierGarage’s most popular floor is the PremierOne Decorative Texture floor coating. Elliott says it withstands heat as well as cold and wet or dry weather conditions. “The floor resists chipping, peeling, fading or stains. The floor is easy to maintain as spills can be easily wiped up and is resistant to chemicals commonly found in garages, including gasoline, auto fluids and paint thinner,” he says. JOHN WILBANKS

MARK MAGERS

I had a regular tune-up with Airtron and John was my service provider. He was great to work with. John helped me to understand the more technical aspects of my heating system. He took the time to look at my unit together with me and discuss options for managing my filtration system. His attention to those details and meeting me, the customer, halfway definitely made a difference. - Margaret C.

I have been using Airtron for four years since we moved here. I have found them to be prompt, courteous and competent. They serviced our old unit and installed a humidifier. When the 20+ year old furnace finally gave out, they sold and installed a new furnace and AC. Their maintenance service also is excellent. The service people are efficient and clearly know what they are doing. I have had nothing but positive experiences with Airtron. - Marcia

Custom Homebuilder is Honored of Number One Ranking in State If you have been considering building your dream home but have been afraid of the process and not sure where to start, Sigma Builders has created an innovative approach that is unlike any in the industry. In fact, Sigma was just named the #1 Custom Home Builder by Home Builder Digest.

Writer // Janelle Morrison

Personalized / Interactive / Expedient

S

igma COO Dave Berman, who has been involved in the home building industry for more than 25 years, says they truly partner with potential clients in a personalized and interactive way. The Sigma process starts by discussing market demographics, which includes such things as resale value and sale prices in a particular area. “We counsel our clients using real time market data to ensure that investment in their home is appropriate for the location,” he says. After that, the design team launches into a high-tech interactive design process, just like on HGTV. “We have 3D software where you can walk through the rooms and understand the spaces. This gives our clients an interactive, customized and personalized approach,” says Berman. He says Sigma does all this in a thorough and efficient manner, so the client would have a full picture of their home, including a closely accurate sales price, in just days versus months with the competition. Additionally, the design session is complimentary with no financial obligation while other builders typically require a deposit. “That’s a unique approach,” says Berman. “Not only do they get a customized plan that they

S p e c i a l

S e c t i o n

Home Improvement

can see, touch and feel through the use of 3D imaging, but they also get well-defined specifications that are designed above the competition Thus our customers get “free” design of their dream home.” Berman says that other homebuilders will often give low entry-level pricing and then upcharge for the upgrades for things that most people would want in their home. “For us, we are very aware of what those items are, and if we think that the majority of people will expect to see that in a home, then we will include that in our standard features,” he says. Berman’s partners at Sigma Builders are Kimberly and Peter Wang who have been involved in the home building industry for more than 10 years. Kimberly is the CFO, and her husband is involved on the entrepreneurial side of the business. Kimberly says there is no nickel and diming with Sigma. “Everyone is going to want something special in their house. We try to get 90 percent of what clients want in their house. Then they can add their unique 10 percent,” she says. Kimberly points out that Sigma utilizes IT throughout the building process to make the experience a real-time dynamic. “All of our customers have access to an app, so that they

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 5

can see the building stages of their home and can provide their input directly,” she says. “We use technology from beginning to end in the process.” “We are custom builders, and we want our customers to have their dream home on the perfect lot,” says Berman. If you have a lot of your own, Sigma will build on it. If you do not, they have their own lots, or they will help clients locate their perfect home site. Sigma’s success shows in its rapid growth, now building in Brownsburg, Avon, Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, Indy, near Northside and in key custom neighborhoods such as Newark in downtown Carmel, Jackson’s Grant at 116th and Springmill in Carmel, Bridgewater Club in Carmel, Brookside in Westfield, Cherry Tree Grove in Carmel, Brooks Park in Fishers, and New England Way in Avon and Surrey Park at 86th & Springmill. Sigma is announcing a new 24 home community in the Village of Zionsville. Lot reservations are being taken now. Additional new areas will be announced soon. In addition to a great warranty, Sigma also offers a list of complimentary items, such as an interior designer to work with through the process to ensure our customers vision for their home is achieved.

Berman says they also have a huge focus on responsibility to the communities in which they build. They sponsor events, such as Bike Carmel and Concerts at the Gazebo in Carmel, and become a partner with the communities. “We have a very responsible, sustainable, community-embracing approach. That’s what separates Sigma,” he says. “Every single customer that has built with Sigma has communicated delight with their experience, and they can’t wait to tell people about it. For us, that’s the ultimate scorecard.” 4630 Lisborn Dr, Carmel, IN 46033, USA (317) 203-3070 sigmabuildersllc.com

Your Idea, Their Expertise

Nicholas Construction turns their clients’ remodeling dreams into reality

It doesn’t take long for home improvement projects to get out of hand. Painting the family room? You got this. Hanging a ceiling fan? Uh, okay, have at it. Ripping out your old master bath vanity, replacing it with custom cabinetry and a granite countertopand adding a new glass block walk-in shower? Well, that escalated quickly.

hether you’ve been in your home for 20 years or 20 months, chances are there are areas of the house that could stand a makeover. You have an idea of what you want the finished product to look like. Maybe you’ve seen your dream kitchen in a magazine or the perfect basement with game room and wet bar on Pinterest. But where do you start? Navigating the endless choices of colors, fabrics, textures and architectural designs is not for the faint of heart. You need the guiding hand of a professional every step of the way. Enter Nicholas Construction. “We’re very hands-on,” says Kyle Nicholas, president of the four-year-old company. “Our process and who we are is what differentiates us from others.” Nicholas Construction’s basic philosophy is to cater to the client. Through three stages – design, selection and construction – they work to make sure the finished product is just what the customer had in mind. It starts with a feasibility study, or as Nicholas likes to call it, “a heartbeat check. Making sure the budget aligns with the customer’s end goal,” he says. Next is a visit to the client’s home by

Home Improvement Lead Designer Laura Sherrell. She walks through the entire house to get a feel for the layout and looks at any of the inspirational photos that the homeowner has drawn their ideas from (even those Pinterest images), often spending as much as two hours to get the whole scope of the project. “Initially, we base (our design) off the function of the space first and how it’s going to flow and what the design’s going to look like,” says Sherrell. “Then we get into the finish selections’ phase of choosing colors and textures and that kind of thing.” Nicholas and Sherrell both believe it’s important to follow the customer’s design wishes as closely as possible, so the finished product is one everyone is happy with. However, sometimes those wishes won’t work physically or financially, and

that can lead to some awkward moments when a homeowner needs to be told their plans may not work exactly as they had hoped. “We’re not afraid to have difficult conversations,” says Nicholas. “When you’re hiring a design/build firm, you’re hiring us for our expertise. There are a lot of times we go into a space and take [the customer’s] inspiration, and then we have to work to get the functionality out of it.” Nicholas also takes pride in his company’s ability to do a wide range of projects – from a straightforward kitchen remodel to a whole-house renovation. One project Nicholas was especially proud of was a basement renovation after a water remediation in a home in the Windermere neighborhood in Carmel. “We redid the bathroom and added a wet bar and custom millwork,” says Nicholas. “We added accent walls, all new flooring – carpet and hardwood – and even a movie theater.” And always with their signature hands-on approach. “I handle all the project management. I don’t outsource it,” says Nicholas. “I’m very

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 7

integrated from the get-go, and Laura does all the design work. For Laura and me, this is our pride and joy.” With that kind of commitment to superior workmanship and customer input, you can trust Nicholas Construction to make your home improvement dreams come true.

Andrew Wagoner – Home Services Is your home’s roof in need of a repair or replacement? If so, it’s time to call Andrew Wagoner, Residential Project Manager with Amos Exteriors, before the winter winds start blowing. In addition to roofing, Amos Exteriors provides expert siding, guttering, windows, insulation and painting services.

Andrew would like to extend the following special offer to Carmel and Zionsville residents: FREE Home Exterior Inspection. The Home Exterior Inspection will provide the service of noting problems which may be evident at time of inspection and will also provide written solutions as needed in order to give you peace of mind that unnecessary damages and expensive problems can be avoided down the road. While we would recommend having a professional like Wagoner inspect your house, here are some things you can do to inspect your house’s exterior to reduce the cost of repairs down the road:

Siding Look for swelling that indicates possible rotting.

Windows Aluminum-clad wood windows can completely rot apart on the inside yet leave no visible evidence at the exterior. Andrew Wagoner

Chimney Chimney repairs can be another large expense. Missing mortar between the bricks typically won’t be a major repair, but missing bricks and large cracks in the walls can sometimes mean the upper portion of the chimney needs to be rebuilt.

Roofs Missing or dislodged roof shingles are an alert to wind damage and can become a cause of unwanted water damage.

W

agoner has been providing home services to Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield and Whitestown residents for more than 30 years. A lifelong craftsman with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Wagoner brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his customers. Wagoner has been partnering with Amos Exteriors Inc. since 2014. “This family-owned and operated business has more than 45 years of experience, and they’ve earned critical industry distinction along the way, including the Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contrac-

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 9

Gutters/Water Management tor designation. It means that Amos Exteriors meets the highest standards obtainable in the Owens Corning family of Contractors where the commitment to excellence is required and strictly adhered to,” says Wagoner. An Indiana native, Wagoner is a graduate of a high school in the Indianapolis area. Following graduation, he honorably served in the military as an Aviation Electronics Technician with the 3rd & 7th Fleets of the United States Navy. When he’s not assisting clients, Andrew enjoys attending church and being a member of the Central Indiana Bicycling Association (CIBA).

This one is huge. Make sure water is properly directed away from the house. Look for proper gutters, downspouts and downspout extensions. They’re not required, but they certainly help. Also, check to make sure the earth slopes away from the house.

You can reach Andrew Wagoner to schedule your FREE Home Exterior Inspection by calling or texting 317-848-4799 or emailing awagoner@amosexteriors.com. www.amosexteriors.com

GreenLawn by Design Royce & Catherine Simpkins

F

ourteen years ago, Catherine and Royce Simpkins launched GreenLawn by Design out of their garage. It’s not surprising that they would end up starting a business together in light of the fact that they have known each other since the third grade. They grew up together in a small rural community in northern Indiana and share similar values. It’s those values that they have incorporated into GreenLawn by Design to make it successful as they work hard to win the loyalty of their clients. Catherine grew working on the farm that has been in her family for over 100 years. Like a lot of kids in the country, she was involved in 4-H. After graduating from college with a degree in marketing, she went to work for a farm service company that sold fertilizers and chemicals to local farmers in northern Indiana. Catherine was the first woman to become the manager of the company. With that position, she gained an understanding of the importance of great customer service while she was required to be a consultant to area farmers to help them understand successful management strategies, identify weed and insect problems and then develop treatment plans and to provide

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 10

guidance to framers on state of the art farming methods and products. Royce spent 20 years in the U.S. Army and while serving received his college degree in Business Management. After his retirement from the military, he went to work in management for a national lawn service company. From his time there along with his experience in the military, Royce was ready to launch his own business, and so was Catherine. Enter GreenLawn by Design. GreenLawn by Design offers year-long lawn care services. They also provide full-service landscaping services, including installation, maintenance and even hardscapes. Among their hardscape projects are retaining walls, patio pavers, water features and fire pits. With all the new home construction in the past few years, the Simpkins said they have been very busy providing services for new home construction. Many new homeowners find that the landscaping around their new house is shoddy and was not designed with the homeowners’ tastes in mind. As a result, new homeowners ask GreenLawn by Design for services like replacing lawns, creating privacy fences with plants and adding trees.

Home Improvement Many of us get that burst of energy in the spring and only then begin to think about caring for our lawns and trying to beautify the exterior of our homes. For many of us, fall is mistaken for simply a time to rake leaves and put away the patio furniture. While GreenLawn by Design does offer fall cleanup and leaf removal, the Simpkins ask that you don’t overlook the important services that they offer in the fall that will have a terrific effect on your lawn in the spring. They say the best way to assure a beautiful lawn in the spring is to perform certain maintenance procedures in the fall, such as aeration, over-seeding and fertilizer application. Royce recommends seeding your lawn in the fall, so the grass seed can germinate before spring and will not be negatively affected when the pre-emergence weed killer is applied in the spring. The early fall is an excellent time to do any landscaping in which you plan to add trees or other perennials, such as shrubs and flowers that grow from bulbs. The cooler temperatures, along with the normal fall rains, allow the plants to get a great start before the dryness and hot temperatures of next summer can take their toll. They recommend thinking of fall as a second planting season. GreenLawn by Design has long been dedicated to fabulous customer service. They have been named a Super Service Award winner for three years in the category of lawn fertilization and landscaping. They have installed software that they make available to their clients that, among other things, allows clients to log in and see if and when their lawns were serviced and view pictures of GreenLawn by Design’s employees to make sure that the person showing up is actually from the company. In addition, Catherine has a blog that informs clients of any insects or diseases that have become prevalent in the area and gives tips for maintaining a beautiful lawn. Rest assured that GreenLawn by Design is fully licensed and also insured. So, if you want a beautiful lawn next spring, call GreenLawn by Design now. The landscaping and lawn services that they can offer this fall will go a long way to ensuring you have a great outdoors next spring. 317-804-8088 greenlawn@greenlawndesign.com 1310 State Road 32 W Westfield, IN 46074 www.greenlawndesign.com

Storm Damage Renovators You Can Trust Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Laura Arick and submitted

Mike Redman is a local contractor who offers more than 20 years of storm damage renovation and home remodeling through his company, Home Value Renovation (HVR). Redman, president and owner of HVR, is a graduate of Purdue University and has been in the construction industry since 1994. He resides in Zionsville with his family and is a trusted business owner not only in the local communities but throughout his industry as well.

VR is an award-winning general contractor based in Indianapolis that specializes in the installation of roofing as well as a variety of other home remodeling products that include the installation of walk-in baths and other interior updates. HVR performs installations for both residential and commercial customers throughout Indiana and the Columbus, Ohio area. “We (HVR) started in the insurance restoration business from hail storms and other types of damage,” Redman stated. “We offer a lifetime warranty on labor and 50 years on materials. For us, it’s not about whether or not you have a service call; it’s

Home Improvement about how you handle it. Our crews are certified and trained by the corporate headquarters of the manufacturing product that they’re putting on.” HVR is a GAF Master Elite® Roofing Contractor. Only a select few roofing contractors in Indiana can claim that distinction. HVR offers all GAF products and has experience at installing and repairing roofs of all types, including asphalt shingle roofs, metal roofs and flat roofs. Redman’s company uses the highest-quality products from reputable manufacturers like GAF, Owens Corning, Pella, James Hardie, Mastic Siding and others. HVR is the only Home Advisor Elite 360 roofing contractor in central Indiana. Redman and his crews have earned high ratings with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and countless wordof-mouth referrals from satisfied customers, including the president of the BBB. “We installed a new roof, gutters and attic insulation in the president of the BBB’s house. He was ecstatic,” Redman said. “Then a major hail storm damaged their house last year, and we came back out and redid it. We have the pleasure of saying that we’re the only roofing contractor in Indiana who has put the roof on the president of the BBB’s house not once but twice.” Redman explained that HVR offers “no money down” and collects payment for the work when the job is completed. “We tell people that if companies come out and require a deposit to get the work going, that means that they likely can’t afford to bankroll labor and materials,” he said. “So they have to use another customer’s deposit to buy the materials. With our program, we do not require deposits from anybody. The customer pays us when the job is done and they’re happy.” Redman’s company offers in-house financing as well and works with any budget and any size home. “We do offer in-house financing for people who don’t have the immediate funds to fix up their house,” Redman emphasized. “We can secure them financing, so they can get the things done that they need to rather than be on a strict budget and have only so much cash to work with. We did over 1,000 roofs last year, and the project sizes varied from $4,000 for a complete roof replacement all the way to the $200,000 mark where we did some larger homes with roofing, siding windows and gutters. For the most part, our average job for roofing, windows,

siding and gutters is $20,000. We’re running about seven roofing crews a day. From start to finish, most of our jobs are completed in less than four to six weeks.” HVR uses modern technology to ensure precise measurements and estimates. “We don’t measure roofs by hand anymore,” Redman said. “We do inspections with a drone, and everything is done digitally now. We pull up all of the measurements and give them a down-to-the-penny exact estimate.” With precise measurements, HVR can order the correct amount of materials that are needed for each job. HVR’s average roof install is about 40 squares. According to Redman, most companies’ roof installs average 22-24 squares. According to Redman, HVR completes 80 percent of its roof jobs in one day.

Redman added, “With our no money down policy, our two decades-plus of expertise and our list of referrals, it really makes a difference when people are making the decision to work with us. Seventy percent of our business comes from referrals. Our customers feel comfortable working with us because they don’t pay us until we are finished with their job and they are happy, and we make sure that the customer is happy, no matter the cost. We go over, above and beyond, what a company should to make the customer happy. We make sure that the customer is happy at whatever cost.” Contact Home Value Renovation today at 317-445-4427 or visit www.getHVR.com for a free storm damage assessment or repair cost estimate.

Artomobilia Celebrates Ford GT with Rare Collection Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Anthony Ross Tyler, Submitted and Ford Chip Ganassi Racing

The annual Carmel Artomobilia event has boasted one of the most eclectic gatherings of original period-correct automobiles anywhere, including Supercars, Exotic, Sports Cars, Classics, Racers, Historically Preserved, Indiana Built, Sedan/Coupe and more. The event brings an estimated 20,000 spectators and enthusiasts from throughout Indiana and surrounding states into the heart of the city of Carmel. The event’s organizers and sponsors are celebrating the 11th year of this remarkable display of automotive ingenuity and design.

T

his year’s Artomobilia will take place one entire weekend in August, beginning with Fuelicious Friday, August 24 and Artomobilia Saturday, August 25. It concludes with the newest event, “SHIFT,” on Sunday, August 26. Saturday’s Artomobilia will feature more than 400 enthusiast and collector cars representing more than 26 classes, including Super Car, Exotic, Classic, Sports Car, European, Domestic, Vintage and Racers on the streets of Carmel in the Arts & Design District. While these are not formally judged, they represent the best examples of what

Carmel_2018August_Artomobilia_Ganassi_V02.indd 1

is going on in national and local car clubs as well as provide a great opportunity to see firsthand how you can participate in the car hobby. This year, Artomobilia will feature the heritage of Ford Performance, specifically the Ford GT. Bring your families and friends to this remarkable event and enjoy several decades of automotive ingenuity!

Ford GTs Commemorate the 1966/2016 Wins at Le Mans This year, the Artomobilia team had an incredible and historic opportunity to capture an iconic image of three generations

of the Ford GT in both race trim and road models. With the assistance of the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, members of the Artomobilia Alumni and renowned photographer Anthony Ross Tyler, these images were captured, representing decades of Ford Performance. “John’s been associated with the company for a while,” said Mike O’Gara, team manager at Ford Chip Ganassi Racing. “We’ve provided show cars for Artomobilia in the past to be on display. He reached out this year with the idea of highlighting Ford and the GT in particular, and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

2018-07-27 10:27 AM

O’Gara spoke about the historic photo shoot and Ford’s reason for redesigning the Ford GT. “Ford’s point of bringing back the GT [in 2016] was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of them winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time in 1966,” O’Gara said. “That was the inspiration for both the race car and the road car. Most race cars that are designed are based on production cars. This [Ford GT] is pretty special because the race car was designed first. It’s been adapted to run on the road. The sole purpose of this latest version of the GT was a tribute to Ford’s heritage and success at Le Mans that goes back to the 1960s when Ford wanted to compete head-to-head with Ferrari and some of the other makes at Le Mans. It’s been very special for us and the Ford family, and we were lucky to put these race cars together and start racing them in 2016. We didn’t have a successful early portion of the season here in the States, but we packed up all of our stuff and went to Le Mans and managed to win on our first attempt since Ford’s first Le Mans win 50 years ago.” A 50-year rivalry between Ferrari and Ford was rekindled in 2016 at Le Mans. The No. 68 Ford GT of Sébastien Bourdais (FRA), Joey Hand (US) and Dirk Müller (GER) crossed the finish line at Le Mans at 3 o’clock on Sunday as the overall GT winner of the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours. The No. 69 Ford GT of Ryan Briscoe (AUS), Scott Dixon (NZ) and Richard Westbrook (GB) joined the winners on the podium after scoring third place. The Nos. 66 and 67 Ford GTs finished in fourth and ninth places, respectively.

One Rare Car and a Comedy of Errors Car collector and aficionado Gary has been showing cars at Artomobilia for the past several years. Most of Gary’s exquisite collection is kept overseas, and he transports them to the U.S. for different occasions. The very first car that he exhibited at Artomobilia was a 1974 BMW 2002

Bill Ford, executive chairman at Ford Motor Company, said in a statement released by Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team after the victory at Le Mans, “This is a historic moment for the Ford Motor Company. We dared to dream that we could return to Le Mans, 50 years after the incredible 1966 win, and take on the toughest competition in the world. The pride we all felt when the Ford GT crossed the line at Le Mans is indescribable. The team that designed, built and raced the Ford GT has worked tirelessly to bring us to this result, and I am proud of each and every one of them. The Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team demonstrated the spirit of Ford, that

of innovation, determination and true teamwork. We cherish our history and heritage, but today, we made history again, and I couldn’t be more proud.” O’Gara reflected upon that historic day. “It was a big day,” he expressed. “Bill Ford, Edsel Ford II and Henry Ford III were all there to celebrate the win with us, which was massive. We didn’t even understand how big it was until it happened. Since then, we’ve won the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, Brickyard 400 and 12 Hours of Sebring. Obviously, winning Le Mans was the biggest and not just for Chip Ganassi Racing and all of our guys but for the Ford family and Ford fanatics everywhere.

People come out to the race tracks and are amazed. They just want to touch the car and be near the race cars, which is pretty cool. I’ve worked in IndyCar, NASCAR and other series almost my whole life but never with a program that has this much heritage and enthusiasm from the company, the manufacturer and the fans as well. To bring all of these cars together at our shop and celebrate that [heritage] for Ford was a pretty cool thing to be involved with.” When asked what prompted Chip Ganassi to become involved with Ford and race the GT, O’Gara replied, “Le Mans was another goal post for Chip Ganassi the individual and the company as well. It was another race that was on his bucket list as both a racing fan and team owner. When Ford approached us with the idea of doing it, he said, ‘Let’s go for it.’ He didn’t see any reason why we couldn’t go over there and why we couldn’t win. And we managed to do it. He’s the only guy in history that’s won all of those big races. It set him in a different class from some of the other car team owners out there.”

2018-07-27 10:27 AM

that was awarded first place in the German Sports Class. “I entered it, and it beat all those fancy Porsches and all of those other cars,” Gary said. “Last year, I brought a 1967 Shelby GT500.” A collector of Jaguars, Gary explained that he’s had a history with Ford going back to his childhood as his family members were “Ford people.” “I was in London, and a friend and I went to the National Motor Museum. He [my friend]

said I had to see a car down there. We drove down to Beaulieu in Hampshire [England], and off in the corner was a 1968 Ford GT Mk III of which there are only seven in existence. The museum didn’t own it, so I traced the woman who owned it, and she and I began talking about the car.” Over a period of two years and a several details later, Gary convinced the woman to sell him the car. “I had finally convinced her

to sell it,” he said. “I had to fly into Paris to take her to dinner before she finally agreed to sell me the car and agree upon a price. I keep a bank account in England, and my bank wired money to my Barclay’s account in London. The bank wired it to the wrong account. We met in her lawyer’s office, and I didn’t have any money in my checking account over there. Then I found out that she didn’t actually own the car. It was in her husband’s estate, and he

The Passion behind the Power Don, a Carmel resident and an owner of a 2017 Ford GT, is a life-long automobile appreciator and his car was one of the five featured in the iconic Ford GT photo shoot. “My car is the blue Ford GT with silver stripes in the front center of that photo,” Don said. “It’s a current generation road car. We [local Ford GT owners] were invited to part

Carmel_2018August_Artomobilia_Ganassi_V02.indd 3

of this photo shoot and John [Leonard] said that based upon his research, there isn’t a single photo anywhere with all three generations of Ford GT represented.” Don moved to Detroit as a kid and grew up in the “car culture”. After college, Don went into the automobile industry and appreciating cars and attending car shows has been a

long-time hobby of his. “I’ve always been a car fan for as long as I can remember,” Don said. “I wasn’t able to have fine automobiles growing up. My first car was a ‘71 Ford Torino that cost me $250 and I overpaid for it. I have two college-age boys and a statement that I made to them several years ago that has stuck is ‘To me it’s not a material thing [ap-

had passed.” After sorting through the convoluted details, the two shook hands and agreed that once Gary’s check cleared, the title would be cleared and released to him. “Once I received the title, I had the car dismantled and put back together,” Gary said. “It had been sitting for 35 years, but it only had 5,000 miles on it. That is the brief version of how I ended up owning this car.”

preciating cars]. It’s all about a community’. Whether that’s Artomobilia which I think is a fabulous example of that sense of community or your local ‘cars and coffee’ meet up where all of the stripes are checked at the door. It doesn’t matter if you have a million dollar car or a thousand dollar car that you’re passionate about-there’s passion and energy around the automobile.” Don became fascinated with the legacy of Ford Performance, specifically with regards to the Ford GT. “The heritage behind the GT, Henry Ford and Enzo Ferrari, and Ford beating Ferrari in ’66 setting out to do it again fifty years later was attractive to me,” he said. “What was also attractive to me was the opportunity to own one of these cars from a short production run. I like sharing the car and that’s one of the reasons why I wanted to help John with the photo shoot. I feel a bit of an obligation being an owner of the Ford GT and Ford wants us [Ford GT owners] to drive the cars and show the cars. I’m keen to make sure that it doesn’t just sit away wrapped in plastic-it’s a car that is meant to be enjoyed.”

A Fun and Easy Car to Drive The re-release of the Ford GT was advertised during the 2004 Super Bowl game. Eric, a Carmel resident, recalled it was that very commercial that caught more than just his eye; it caught his interest in the new Ford GT. “I became fascinated with it [Ford GT] to the point that I wanted to own one when I saw the reintroduction of it,” Eric said. “One of the Super Bowl ads showed a Ford GT winding through the road, and it was exactly like the one that I ended up buying – red with white stripes. It [the car] became a target of something to acquire, and once I rode in my friend’s Ford GT (he lives here in Indianapolis and is also a car collector), I was really hooked.” Eric has been attending Artomobilia since before it became the renowned show that it is today held in Carmel. “I have attended and shown cars with this group when it was held on the canal in downtown Indianapolis and before it

Carmel_2018August_Artomobilia_Ganassi_V02.indd 4

was Artomobilia as it is known today,” he said. “Then it moved up to Carmel, and I’ve participated every single year. Artomobilia is an extremely large show that has a wide range of cars, and it’s the number of makes, styles and classes that are grouped and shown that is one of Artomobilia’s strongest assets in comparison to the many other shows that I’ve attended and/or participated in.” Eric has had a lifelong passion for cars and collecting that began as soon as his foot hit the gas pedal of his very first car.

In terms of its driving capability, it’s a manual shift car, and it is absolutely fabulous to drive”

“I’m a young 75-year-old gentleman, and my wife and I have been married for 50 years,” he proudly shared. “My wife knew when she married me that cars would be a part of our long-term relationship. I bought my first car the day that I got my driver’s license at age 16. I had already saved up my money, and I’ve been buying, selling and upgrading cars ever since.” Eric explained what makes his 2015 Ford GT such a pleasurable road car to drive. “In terms of its driving capability, it’s a manual shift car, and it is absolutely fabulous to drive,” he enthused. “It is easy to drive – easy clutch and easy to shift. It just makes all the right sounds and has the right appearance from any angle, and if you want absolute raw power, it’s there on the other end of the continuum.”

Annual Songbook Celebration Gala

Spotlights Talent and Education Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Submitted

This year’s annual Songbook Celebration Gala will feature performer Chris Isaak at the Palladium September 15 while celebrating the Center for the Performing Art’s affiliation with the Great American Songbook Foundation. Five-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein, founder of the Foundation and artistic director at the Center, will lead tributes to this year’s Songbook Hall of Fame inductees: Academy Award-winning composer Jimmy Van Heusen, singer-actress Rosemary Clooney and musical theater star Marilyn Maye.

e sat down with Jeff McDermott to discuss the history of the annual gala and the impact that the fundraiser has on the Center’s outreach and education programs. “This will be our seventh gala, and two of those previous [galas] were once two-night events where we would have the dinner portion at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis, and the following evening, we would have the Hall of Fame induction, performances and after-party at the Palladium,” McDermott recalled. “Once we got the festival floor donated, we were able to have the dinner portion and the entire program all in one night and all in the Palladium.” The funds generated from the annual gala support the Center’s educational programs, such as Peanut Butter & Jam, KAR Front Seat, Artist Outreach, Dance Discovery Series, Musical Images of Indiana, Science of Sound and several other classes that are available to children and the public. The funds allow the Center’s staff to build upon the existing catalog of programs and to expand upon it. Attending the gala is a fun-filled way to support the Center’s initiatives while enjoying a star-studded, elegant black-tie affair with a few hundred of your closest friends and colleagues. “When we put in our festival floor, it creates a unique atmosphere within the Palladium that people who don’t attend the gala rarely see,” McDermott shared. “We can sit hundreds of people for dinner on the festival floor, which rests above the orchestra seats, turning the entire hall into a dinner theater.” McDermott shared a few “fun facts” about this year’s HOF inductees. “We’ve got a great lineup of inductees this year in our Great American Songbook Hall of Fame, which has become a traditional part of the gala evening,” he said. “Jimmy Van Heusen is a songwriter who many may not recognize, but they have certainly heard his songs. He wrote a vast majority of songs that were performed by Frank Sinatra and many others. Rosemary Clooney, the late great

Carmel_2018August_Songbook Gala.indd 2

performer, will also be inducted. We’ve got a special sentiment for her for a variety of reasons. Rosemary was like a second mother to Michael Feinstein, and her daughter, Maria Ferrer, is a member of the Great American Songbook Foundation’s board of directors. And Marilyn Maye, who is in her early 90s and who performs hundreds of shows a year, will accept her HOF award and will also perform live.” McDermott shared that Maye is believed to hold the record for the most appearances on “The Tonight Show” with the late Johnny Carson. “We’ll have Chris Isaak performing as the headliner this year,” McDermott confirmed. “He follows Kristin Chenoweth who performed last year. It’s kind of a new format that we’ve instituted in the last couple of years. We had Storm Large perform the year before that, and we are constantly coming up with new ways to make the gala new and different by bringing in new headliners every year who add a different dimension to the gala.” The gala attendees will enjoy a live auction with four or five spectacular excursions or “experiences” to bid on. Following the induction, dinner and performances, attendees who have purchased tickets to the after-party will enjoy several bands, food and beverages throughout the Palla-

dium into the late night hours. “There’s a sense of excitement that surrounds the evening because there are so many aspects of things going on,” McDermott concluded. “Every year, we add new touches and surprises, and I can guarantee some surprises for this year.” Under the theme “Swinging on a Star” – a tune written by Van Heusen and famously performed by Clooney – the Songbook Celebration begins with the 5 p.m. First Merchants Bank Cocktail Reception and continues with an elegant dinner in the concert hall, live auction, program and after-party. Tickets for the after-dinner portion of the evening are available at the Palladium Box Office, online at TheCenterPresents.org or by phone at 317-843-3800. Starting at $100, the tickets include gallery or box seating for the 8:30 p.m. Songbook Hall of Fame induction ceremony, followed by Isaak’s headline performance as well as admission to the all-inclusive after-party with dancing and complimentary drinks and desserts in three uniquely themed rooms from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tables seating 4-10 guests for the entire evening are available for purchase by emailing Sheila Morone at SongbookGala@TheCenterPresents.org.

Zionsville Lions H o s t A n n u a l V I P C a r n i v a l f o r F a m i l i e s a n d C a r e g i v e r s Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of Zionsville Lions Club

Since 1953, families from Zionsville and the surrounding communities have participated in the Zionsville Fall Festival’s lively festivities that include a carnival in Lions Park and an annual parade that marches down the historic bricks of Main Street in downtown Zionsville.

T

he festival weekend, presented by Zionsville Lions Club, attracts over 20,000 people from all over Indiana and beyond. This year’s Zionsville Fall Festival begins Friday, September 7 and concludes Sunday, September 9. What some people may not realize is that the VIP (Very Important People) Carnival night that kicks off the Fall Festival on Friday night is designed to cater especially to families and caregivers who have members with special needs. The goal of the event is to provide special needs’ families with a friendly environment where “kids can be kids” and enjoy the American tradition of a carnival. The VIP Carnival is presented by the Zionsville Lions Club and HAWK Foundation and takes place in downtown Zionsville. It is totally free, so no additional financial

Carmel_2018August_Lions Club Fall Fest.indd 1

burden is placed on the family/caregivers whose goal should be to simply enjoy a family night out. Zionsville Lions Club President Mike Moran, a resident of west Carmel, would like for families and caregivers of individuals with special needs from any community to come out and enjoy the carnival, especially if they have never experienced it before. “The whole community is welcome,” Moran said. “We want to make sure that the general public knows that the carnival is open for everyone that evening, but it is only free to VIPs and their families/ caregivers. Our VIPs and their families/ caregivers are asked to register online, and they will be given wristbands for entry and access to the carnival rides, games and free food that will be provided by Chick-fil-A that evening. We also have our volunteers on-hand who will be helping our VIPs with getting them on and off the rides. The event starts at 5 p.m., and the rides will open at 6 p.m.” Paul Dreier, Zionsville Lions Club member and HAWK Foundation founding board members, shared with us that the VIP Carnival continues to grow by 200400 attendees each passing year. Last year, the VIP Carnival entertained 1,600 VIPs and their families/caregivers. “Some families drive longer than the event itself,” Dreier said. “We have people that come from Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio to attend this event.” With regards to the volunteers who come out to assist the VIPs that evening,

Dreier mentioned the Zionsville Best Buddies group as being a highly visible group that comes out among other incredible volunteers that night. “The Zionsville Best Buddies group is the largest in the nation,” Dreier said. “The entire local Best Buddies group shows up to volunteer at the VIP Carnival wearing their Best Buddies T-shirts, and they ride along with the VIPs when the parents or caregivers can’t ride along with them. We also have a number of service provider and organization tents. This year, we are approaching 20 different services, and most of them are free. These providers and organizations help families with special needs with things like funding for wheelchairs and other special equipment needed to care for their child. And we even have two ladies who come every year who own massage therapies, and they give away free massage therapies to the caregivers.” Dreier emphasized that families and caregivers need to register online for the VIP Carnival, so they can get the extra free gifts and other perks that are provided by the event’s sponsorships and so the organizers have an accurate headcount for meals, etc. To register for the VIP Carnival, visit thehawkfoundation.org. Moran listed this year’s Fall Festival highlights as being the VIP Carnival on Friday, the parade the following morning and the big silent auction on Saturday. “We’ve also got the ‘Impalas’ performing again this year at the Lions Lounge that opens at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The band will perform beginning at 7 p.m. that evening. The beer lines were very popular among the adults. We’ve had great feedback from the attendees on the Lions Lounge and the ‘Impalas,’ so we keep inviting them back because they keep the crowd going, and it’s a great time.” To participate in the silent auction and support the Lion’s Club’s activities, visit qtego.net/auc/zlc. You can review items up for bid, register your mobile phone and start bidding. PUTTING THE

SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN

For Sheriff Michael Nielsen, Chief Robert Knox and Dr. Scott Robison, it was not a question of “if” but “when” a situation like the Noblesville West Middle School shooting incident would occur so close to, if not in, our own schools. Immediately following the incident on May 25, 2018, these three gentlemen, along with local officials throughout Boone County, knew that the swift actions of all essential community leaders and public safety agencies were necessary to ensure that our schools would be as safe as humanly possible when school resumes this month.

O

n June 18, the Zionsville Town Council passed an additional appropriation resolution to provide the necessary funding for additional police officers to serve as school resource officers (SROs) in all Zionsville Community schools, effective at the start of the 2018-19 school year. The funding allowed Zionsville Police Department (ZPD) to hire three new officers who would report specifically to the duty of being the line of defense or engagement, should the safety of the student body or an individual student be threatened in any way. ZPD’s Chief Knox told us that an average school shooting is over in five to seven minutes, so having an officer in the school cuts down the ZPD’s response time to any situation. The overall cost for the additional school safety measures is $277,000. The Town of Whitestown has agreed to contribute $75,000 which will provide Boone County Sheriff deputies to three schools in rural districts: Zionsville West Middle School, Boone Meadow Elementary School and Stonegate Elementary School. The cost-sharing between agencies allowed the funding to pass. Zionsville Community Schools has agreed to pay

half of the cost. The cost to put a police officer on the street (fully equipped) is approximately just over $100,000 for ZPD and $104,000 for Boone County Sheriff’s Dept., respectively. “We’ve had two SROs rotating throughout the Zionsville School campuses since 2013,” Knox said. “But did the Noblesville School shooting bring this [school safety] discussion to the forefront? Absolutely. It came home to roost. Everybody can agree that it is unfortunate that we have to do this [take these measures], but these are our children, and it’s just the right thing to do and the right time to do it.” Knox commended the Zionsville and Whitestown governing bodies, the ZCS Superintendent and his staff and the ZCS board for all being on the same page and for providing the resources to offset expenses incurred by ZPD and Boone County Sheriff’s Dept. by placing police officers and deputies in each of ZCS’ eight campuses. “We are certainly appreciative of the partnership that we have with the schools, the county, town council and the mayor’s office,” Knox said. “The Whitestown Town Council and Whitestown Police Department are good safety partners,

and I am very happy that they’ve stepped up to assist the sheriff’s department and for what they’re doing out in the rural schools.” School and workplace safety has been a priority for Sheriff Nielsen since he took office four-and-a-half years ago. “One of my goals in my five-year strategic plan was to phase in SROs in our county’s schools,” Nielsen shared. “Of course, the Noblesville School shooting, where my granddaughters were present during that shooting, brought everything to the forefront and sped things up. Did we react to that? We did. Everybody reacted to that event. But it’s not something that was new for us in Boone County. We’ve been planning it for a long time. We just sped up that particular process.” Nielsen explained that the topic of school and workplace safety has been on his radar for a number of years due to the increasing number of mental illness incidents and opioid-related crimes throughout Boone County over the last five years. “I looked into these [statistics] when I became sheriff and said that we’ve got to get SROs into our schools,” Nielsen

said. “As a collaborative effort, the chiefs of police and the sheriff meet once a month to discuss our issues. We realized years ago that we need to have our kids, teachers and anyone who is in the building prepared for a violent intruder and not necessarily for an active shooter. Somebody can come in and do just as much damage with a knife, club or even a baseball bat. The issue is preparedness for any violent attack on kids and staff that are very vulnerable.” Nielsen cited the Noblesville School shooting as an example of how the training and preparedness worked to save lives and limit the number of casualties. “Noblesville had an SRO that was in the building. Even though he was part-time, he was there almost immediately, and you had a teacher and kids, including my two granddaughters, that were taught what to do through ALICE training. And you had this teacher who had the wherewithal to distract and counter,” Nielsen explained. “The teacher was able to distract by throwing a basketball at the intruder and counter. That whole process mitigated the casualties that happened in that school. We’ve been doing this for five years. We’re not going to stop bad things from happening, but we can mitigate the amount of casualties that happen within that school or workplace or wherever a violent attack takes place.” Nielsen, Knox and ZCS Superintendent Dr. Scott Robison all agreed that the most important role that the SROs will

have in each of the schools is to build trusting relationships with the students. “The SROs are the first line of defense, but the key is to get them to create trusting relationships with the kids,” Nielsen emphasized. “If you build up that trust, the kids are going to come up to you and say, ‘Johnny over here has a problem, and he’s talking about some really crazy things. Maybe you should talk to him,’ or ‘He’s talking about committing suicide.’ Over the last six months, we’ve had a handful of teenage suicides in Boone County. As a result of these tragedies, we know that we also need to have the wrap-around services that deal with mental health issues. Those services are key to making this initiative a success. We can’t do this alone.” Nielsen continued, “Zionsville is really good at providing wrap-around services, and the school’s ‘Strong in Every Way’ program is incredible. Everybody has to work together, or this isn’t going to work. It doesn’t make any difference what side of the aisle you’re on politically. It doesn’t make any difference if you believe or

don’t believe in the Second Amendment. This is about protecting our kids and connecting with them.” When asked what the members of the community can do to assist the public safety agencies with their daunting task of protecting our citizens throughout the Boone County community, Knox and Nielsen responded with firm but genuine heartfelt advice. “We need to get our noses out of these things [smartphones],” Knox said as he gestured to his smartphone. “We [as a community] need to go back to ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ We need to get to where your child is everyone’s child in the sense that we are looking out for one another. We’ve all got to participate, slow down and take ownership of this community. We need to hold the children accountable when they make a lapse in good judgment, but just as importantly, we need for the community to keep your eyes and ears open. If you see something, say something.” Nielsen added, “The first thing that parents have to do is be a parent. They have to pay attention to their kids and make sure that they help their kids or seek additional help if there are things that are stressing their kids out.” As the new school year is about to commence, Robison shared more on the Dynamic Student Support Team (DSST) that has been mobilized as an additional layer of support to the overall school safety initiative as well as the Strong in Every Way initiative (SIEW). “We are ramping up our human development interventions as quickly as we can,” Robison said. “SIEW is an umbrella that has a lot of things going on. But a particular subset of that activity called the Dynamic Student Support Team, led by Maggie Ionnacci, director of student services, and Dabney Frothingham, a behavioral intervention practitioner, will have a more intimate knowledge of the students who are receiving services or are the ones being bullied or ostracized. The DSST team at present is looking to hire several social workers that we will have on our school ‘beat’ as it were.”

Robison spoke about how the school administration, staff and board are looking at the whole picture, the entire spectrum of school safety and planning and executing school safety measures. “We want to have a real individualized perception about how students are coming of age in our schools with a real deep attention to that. It is not a perfect antidote because things can slip through the cracks, and young people can choose not to tell you who they really are and become harmful to themselves or others. This isn’t a cost matter, and we are making this happen, so that we can really create a systemic approach to this issue that has plagued other places. There is an old saw about ‘predict and prevent instead of react and repair.’ If we can predict and prevent these events from happening, that’s great. That’s where we get into the spectrum where we have deterrents – the presence of a police car, the presence of an armed police officer – and that will

deter some folks who are contemplating doing something awful. Then we have the law enforcement folks helping us with our in-house school safety training, bringing us to the other side of the spectrum, which is about reaction and quick mitigation to keep people safe, should an awful event occur. It’s the whole spectrum of this that we are looking at.”

Robison concluded, “The advent of police officers in all of our schools is a great thing for that readiness and preparation that Noblesville did benefit from because they had police partners – fully-trained, professional police officers – who happen to serve on a beat that involves places where hundreds of citizens go every day and interact every day. These police partners are there as deterrents. They are there to be seen, and they are there to interact with and create relationships with the students and staff. Our police partners from ZPD and Boone County Sheriff’s Dept. will meet with us weekly along with trained school safety specialists, and as a group, we will talk about the collaboration of our interactions. We’re not creating a police state here. We are creating an opportunity to have appropriate deterrents and appropriate immediate reactions if there are bad actors that enter our space. Otherwise, we’re going about our business as usual here at ZCS.”

Running the Good Race Writer // Rebecca Wood • Photography // Submitted

Zionsville church goes the distance for charity

P

astor Jerry Deck believes helping others begins with taking one step forward. However, some members of his Zionsville Presbyterian Church congregation are taking more than one step. In November, a crew from Zionsville Presbyterian Church (ZPC) will participate in the Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon in Indianapolis. It will be an eclectic group of runners comprised of all abilities and experiences but unified in purpose. Each runner will race for Team World Vision, a charity dedicated to bringing clean water to Africa. This is the second

year ZPC will partner with Team World Vision for the race. Over two years ago, Team World Vision approached Pastor Deck about forming a team. After research and prayer, Deck agreed to the collaboration. “Team World Vision is Gospel-centered in a holistic way,” says Deck. “They strive to make individuals healthy spiritually, physically and emotionally.” Team World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to tackling global poverty and injustice. World Vision strives to provide safe drinking water, good water resources and improved

sanitation and hygiene. According to its website, World Vision is the largest non-governmental provider of clean water in the world. Pastor Deck says the ZPC affiliation with Team World Vision provides numerous benefits. Church members and other teammates have the opportunity to support a charity while also deepening relationships with each other. First on his agenda, Pastor Deck recruited ZPC member Kelly Antcliff to serve as the team captain. As the Zionsville Middle School Athletic Director, Antcliff possesses the skills and experience to lead groups

and organize sporting events. Antcliff expected 20 runners to join the first ZPC team. Instead, the group blossomed to 47 teammates, spanning in age from 16-70 years old. About two-thirds of the participants registered for the half marathon, and one-third of the teammates signed up for the full marathon. Many individuals joined the team without any previous running experience. ZPC member Greg McDaniel labels himself a novice team member. McDaniel recounts how he joined the group. “I was sitting in church, and a Team World Vision representative said, ‘If you can run a 5K, you can run a marathon,’” McDaniel recalls with a laugh. “I raised my hand to join the team and thought I was running a 5K. A few weeks into training, I realized I was running a half marathon. I had never run over three miles.” Despite the confusion, McDaniel completed the 18-week training program and finished his first half marathon with the team. McDaniel raised over $3,100 for Team World Vision, enough to provide clean water for 63 children for a year. “You don’t have to be a professional runner to run with Team World Vision,” McDaniel states. “Most of us are not runners, but we feel called to do it.” Pastor Deck also joined that first ZPC team. “I didn’t want to ask anyone in the congregation to do something I wouldn’t do myself,” Deck comments. “I’m not the fastest runner, but you don’t

always have to be the best, fastest and most gifted to have something to offer God’s Kingdom and your neighbor.” While training, Pastor Deck says his congregants witnessed another side of him. “I think they saw a more vulnerable side of their pastor. That’s probably a good thing.” Deck completed the 2017 Monumental Marathon and raised over $5,000 for Team World Vision. For the 2017 Monumental race, Antcliff wanted the group to raise $10,000. To her surprise and delight, the ZPC team raised over $39,000. “The response was above and beyond my expectations,” Pastor Deck says. “It was an encouragement to the entire congregation. We had a sense of what we could accomplish. We are not just a church that meets together on Sundays; we can make a difference in the community and the world.” The experience was so positive that ZPC decided to organize a team for the second year. Antcliff will continue to serve as team captain. She hopes 50 people will sign up to join the ZPC group and run the 2018 Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon. Her goal is for the ZPC team to raise over $40,000 for Team World Vision. Antcliff encourages anyone in the community to join the group; ZPC church membership or attendance is not required. Team World Vision provides an 18-week training plan with a catch-up option for those who sign up later into the training cycle.

On Saturday mornings, the ZPC team joins other Team World Vision groups on the Monon Trail in Carmel. Nearly 100 runners complete a long run together. The pace varies among individuals, but a sense of camaraderie radiates from the group. “There are all different ages and body types. Everyone has different goals,” Antcliff says of the group runs. “It’s a fun way to cheer each other on. Anything where adults can encourage each other is a great thing to join.” McDaniel plans to run the 2018 Monumental Marathon with the ZPC team. He hopes to raise $5,000 for Team World Vision. McDaniel drums up support and donations on his social media accounts using the hashtag #unlikelymarathoner. This fall, Antcliff will run the Monumental Marathon and the Chicago Marathon for Team World Vision. She will run both races within the span of a month. Antcliff maintains that she’s not a runner, but she is inspired to support Team World Vision and encourage others to do the same. “A lot of individuals are stepping outside of their comfort zones to do something for someone they will never meet,” Antcliff states. “When I start to feel tired in a race, I think about those children in Africa who have to walk for miles to get clean water. That’s always on my mind.” Pastor Deck adds, “This is a great opportunity to say it’s not hopeless. Maybe it’s not changing the world, but it may be taking one step. We all really can make a difference in the world.” For those interested in joining the ZPC team or providing donations, contact Zionsville Presbyterian Church at 317-873-6503.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF THE ZFD MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of ZFD

The Zionsville Fire Department (ZFD) welcomes pro and novice golfers to participate in its 10th annual ZFD Memorial Golf Outing that will take place Monday, August 27 at the Golf Club of Indiana. The annual outing benefits the ZVFD Larry K. Rust Memorial Scholarship Fund, Hoosier Burn Camp and the ZVFD Bereavement Fund. For those who have not attended this outing, it is a meaningful way to give back and putt around with some of Zionsville’s finest, the men and women of ZFD.

T

he golf outing is organized by the members of the ZVFD Support Services, a group of approximately 15 individuals, some who have direct ties to ZFD and some who just wanted to give back to the community. These volunteers raise funds and host events throughout the year for ZFD. “It started 10 years ago when we lost a volunteer firefighter, Larry Rust, and we started a scholarship fund in his name,” explained Janice VanGorder, ZVFD support services president.

“$1,000 goes to a high school senior in his [Larry’s] honor towards college expenses. The Community Foundation of Boone County helps us with the fund and with interviewing the scholarship applicants each year.” Those who have lived in the community for a while understand the deep sense of brotherhood and sisterhood that the firefighters of ZFD have for one another and their dedication to the Zionsville community. The outing provides all attendees an opportunity to have fun while raising funds for three very important causes. “In addition to the scholarship, a portion of the funds goes to Hoosier Burn Camp to send children who have been burned

to camp,” VanGorder explained. “Another portion goes towards the ZFD Bereavement Fund. We have a really good time at the outing. It has grown and changed since we first held it at the Zionsville Golf Course. We used to host a dinner that went along with it that was open to the public. Since the event has grown significantly over the years, we’ve had to move it to the Golf Club of Indiana, and we can no longer offer the meal to non-participants. We still bring a ladder truck and do a 50-50 raffle/ball drop. The balls are numbered, and whichever ball either goes into the hole or comes closest to it wins half of the prize money. We will have a silent auction that will be available online for those who cannot attend the outing.” This year’s title sponsor is St. Vincent Health in addition to numerous other sponsors and business partners and those who wish to make personal donations. The deadline to register your foursome or as an individual is August 17. VanGorder mentioned that the usual golf terms are switched to fire-related terms, such as instead of a shotgun start, there will be a “Siren Start” at 10 a.m. following registration the day of the outing. “We change the names. For instance, ‘False Alarms’ – $5 each – meaning each

golfer may purchase up to two ‘False Alarms’ (a.k.a. Mulligans or second chance tee shots) to be used at his/her discretion during the course of play,” VanGorder said. “Upon use, the player may choose to take his/her original or ‘False Alarm’ tee shot, whichever is better. Operating on the honor system, the ‘False Alarms’ will be pieces of candy that must be eaten when used. “We have ‘Rescue Sticks’ – $10 each – and each foursome may purchase one ‘Rescue Stick’ for those times when a few extra inches or feet may help. ‘Rescue Sticks’ are yardsticks that can be used throughout the game in any combination, up to a total of 36 inches. Use all three feet to sink that much- needed putt or use a few inches at a time to ‘rescue’ the ball from sand or a tree, putting it back safely in the fairway. Operating on the honor system, each foursome is responsible for marking the number of inches used on its ‘Rescue Stick’ until the yardstick is

filled or play is complete. “We also have ‘Emergency Tees’ – $5 each – and each golfer may purchase one ‘Emergency Tee’ to be used at his/ her discretion during the course of play. Upon use, a male player may tee off from the women’s tee box of his choice, or a female player may take one stroke off her game for the hole of her choice. Lastly, we have the ‘Hacker Pack’ – $15 – and players can get a first aid kit for their golf game. Each golfer may purchase one ‘Hacker Pack,’ which includes two ‘False Alarms’ (Mulligan), one ‘Emergency Tee,’ one chance in the ‘Putt Contest’ and one ball for the ‘Golf Ball Drop’ ($18 value). “It really means the world to us to have the support of the community,” VanGorder concluded. “That’s what Zionsville is all about. You can play as serious as you want at the outing, but it’s not mandatory. We’re all about having fun, and a lot of the teams come in and shoot for last place anyway.”

All golf entries are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Full payment is required to reserve your spot. Space is limited! Please make checks payable to ZVFD Support Services. Credit/debit cards are accepted for a small service fee. Golf entries are accepted at the Zionsville Fire Department Headquarters at 1100 W. Oak Street in Zionsville, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by calling 317-873-5358. *Don’t forget to register for silent auction bidding through Qtego at qtego.net/qlink/zfdgolf.
