Lance Stephenson stays Born Ready in Zionsville In this month’s cover story we introduce to our readers a Zionsville resident that probably needs no introduction, Indiana Pacer Lance Stephenson. We talked with Lance about the transition from his New York City roots to the quiet life he has chosen to live in Zionsville. Stephenson also shared some insights regarding the interesting relationship he has developed with Cleveland Cavalier LeBron James. Writer // Janelle Morrison • Cover photo // JJ Kaplan

market. I’m recommending that we are on the market by the end of March. If people wait until the flowers are blooming and wait until May to list their house, they could be in a position of having a lot more competition by then. Especially, if as many sellers get on board as I think and what other agents in real estate are hoping will. The buyers are already out. They’ve been out since last winter looking because they haven’t been able to find what they want.
How does your team prepare a home for listing on the market and what additional services do you offer your sellers?
Heading into the busy spring selling season, we thought it important to discuss the state of the local real estate market and find out what is trending with a few of our local industry experts. We asked what buyers are looking for in existing homes and what options are available for those who are looking to downsize but want to stay local. Lastly, we discussed preparing a home to list on the market so as to increase the chances of selling for the listing price.
Zoë Moore Homes for Keller Williams 1500 W. Oak St. Suite 500, Zionsville, IN 46077 Zoe@ZoeMooreHomes.com Mobile: 317-432-5285 Will it be another “sellers” market this spring? I definitely believe it will be a ‘sellers’ market. It will be a great time to be a seller in 2018. Now, when we say it’s a sellers’ market that doesn’t mean you can put your house on the market for whatever price you want and you don’t even need to clean the front door-it will sell. Absolutely not! That’s not what we’re saying. While we’re anticipating another sellers’ market this year, everything still needs to be staged right, priced right and then it will sell quickly.
If someone is considering listing their home this year, when is the ideal time to put it on the market? I have listings that we’re working on right now that will come onto the spring

We have a strong protocol that we follow that I’ve developed after many years of experience. We have a set plan when we work with a seller. It’s a direct and relationship-based process with the client from the beginning to the end and we work with the client as a team. Additional services that we provide make a huge difference in the amount of homes that we sell as well as our list to sell price ratio; our average is 98%. Our days on the market average is also significantly less than the MIBOR average. We offer staging services, at no additional cost to seller unless we have to bring in furniture. There is a fee for that but when it comes to decluttering or providing artwork, lamps and accessories for staging purposes, we can provide those at no cost to the seller.
What other markets are “hot” for people who want to live a more “urban” lifestyle? We are seeing Baby Boomers from Carmel and Zionsville selling their big homes and moving to downtown Indianapolis. That’s been happening quite a bit for those who are looking for a more metropolitan feel and a new kind of lifestyle. It’s all about creating a new life. That’s one of our mission statements. For our team it’s about helping you along the journey of creating your new life. At different ages and stages of our lives, we need different houses and different options of where we want to be.

Robbin Edwards Edwards Realty Group 10 N. 1st St., Zionsville, IN 46077 ROBBIN.EDWARDS@TALKTOTUCKER.COM Office: 317-873-5391 As the spring season approaches, what is your take on the market at this point? Is the market waking up to another strong “sellers’ market” with a repeat of last year’s activity? The market hasn’t slept. In fact, the market has been strong and consistent. In talking with my peers and other brokerages, we’ve all seen the same thing. It’s just been a steady market that’s been fairly consistent. There are still more buyers than sellers. We still need more inventory.
Does the current interest rate have a significant impact on the buyers’ decision to buy or not to buy? You can never predict the market. Obviously, interest rates have crept up a little but are still historically low. For
those in the younger generations, they don’t know 7%, 8%, 9% interest rates as the norm. They only know 2% and 3% as the norm. When they start hearing 4% and that it might level off at 5%, a little bit of panic sets in. Those of us that are older remember buying our first house at 7% or 8% and thought we were getting a good deal because our parents were buying at 13%. It’s all relative as well. I don’t think people need to panic. Over the course of 2018, I think things will be fairly consistent.
hoods. Westfield, Carmel and Fishers have also done a great job of creating these neighborhoods. I do a lot of work in the Indianapolis area too and I have clients who want to downsize in Pike and Washington Township. I see a gap there and there’s nothing there that is comparable to something that you see in the suburban areas. These clients wan the equivalent to Walker Farms or the Courtyards of Zionsville in Washington Township or Pike. Overall, I do think that we have some good options but I don’t think that we have enough for the boomers who are downsizing.
What options are you presenting to your buyers who want to downsize but stay in the local area, close to their family and friends?
Where are the millennials and younger generations looking to purchase their first or next-step homes?
The suburban communities have done a nice job of creating neighborhoods for people who are downsizing. For instance, in Zionsville, you have Inglenook and the Courtyards of Zionsville. I consider these two very true empty-nester neighbor-
The millennials and younger buyers are savvy buyers. They are impressive. None of my buyers in these generations want to be in the suburban areas. They want to be in the Broad Ripple or downtown areas. The amenities that they want are

connectivity to their own peer group, active amenities like the Monon Trail, coffee houses, and ‘foodie’ places that aren’t your standard chain restaurants. I spend a lot of my time working with that age group as well and clients who are moving up or downsizing. Additionally, I work with many clients from Carmel and Zionsville who are downsizing and moving to downtown Indianapolis. I work outside of the 46077 zip code as well and know the Meridian Kessler, Fletcher Place, Fall Creek Place, Fountain Square and old north side communities well. I spend a lot of time down there. I feel good about that market and what’s going on so I can help people who are looking at that market as well.
Melissa Hartman for Keller Williams MelissaHartman@kw.com pembertonofzionsville.com Direct: 317-850-5479 For people looking for new construction in Zionsville, what does Pemberton offer? Pemberton is a small quaint community comprised of 63 lots. The average lot size is between ½ and ¾ acre. You can build a home, start to finish, in the mid $700s and above. There is approximately 20-acres of common space throughout the community. We have 35 lots available in phase one. For people who are nervous about selling their existing home without a house to move into to, why would Pemberton be a logical option?
7
A lot of people aren’t putting their house on the market because they don’t have a place to go when their house sells. With new construction, you will have a plan and will be closing in about six months once the construction contract has been signed. Most people are comfortable with living somewhere short-term knowing that at the end of three months they’ll be moving into a brand new home. With new construction, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train.
With more people in the Gen X and Baby Boomer generation looking at staying in their homes as long as physically possible, what are some the trends that builders are implementing into their floor plan designs to accommodate the buyers?
MARCH 2018
2018-02-26 4:39 PM
Two of my builders in Pemberton are building spec homes with the master bedroom on the main level. Planning ahead for when the home owner may not want or can’t contend with the stairs. People want to stay in their homes longer and are not moving as much as they did in the past. Another huge trend is people are buying smaller lots but want the outdoor living space with kitchens and fireplaces that are part of the structure of the home. They want accessibility to walking and bike paths. Depending on the seasons, they are using these spaces nearly year round.
Who are the builders building in Pemberton? There are five approved builders in Pemberton. Executive Homes, Gradison Builders, G.R. Donaldson, Wedgewood, and Viewegh & Associates.

Vikings are Coming t o

The world of the Vikings will soon be brought to life through reenactments of the seafaring explorers’ Scandinavian culture. Noble Order Brewing Company, J&J Winery and the Town of Whitestown have teamed up to put on this three-day festival that the organizers hope will become an annual regional attraction.

he festival will take place on a newly acquired tract of land by Whitestown on April 20-22. The 15-acre piece of land is just off I-65 and Exit 133 and will be transformed into a Viking Village. Invited exhibitioners and vendors will set up a temporary village and demonstrate archery, fire juggling, ax throwing, glass blowing, authentic blacksmith work, chainmail work and other activities throughout the festival. There will be a bonfire throughout the event and live music by local Celtic bands, Highland Reign on Friday and Blackthorn’s Bards on Saturday. “This 15-acre piece of land was officially acquired by the Town of Whitestown in January of 2018,” said Nathan Messer, Parks and Recreation Director. “With an all-natural setting that includes a large, wooded portion, it’s a perfect location for this event. Whitestown plans to develop the land into a future park, and we hope to host Whitestown Viking Fest here for years to come.” The festival is family-friendly and will have a kid’s corner where young warriors can enjoy making their own sword and shield, launch water balloons with a catapult and enjoy a game of Kubb, an ancient Viking game that was played in celebration of conquering a village. The festival will highlight authentic battle reenactments put on by three armored combat groups, thrilling festivalgoers with high-action fighting demonstrations. The festival will close with a Viking breakfast feast on Sunday and an authentic Viking funeral at which a Viking boat will be set aflame in keeping with ancient Viking tradition. This will be the fifth year the Noble Order Brewing has hosted its Viking Festival, which originated at their brewery/ winery in Richmond, Indiana. This will

be the first year for the festival to be held in Whitestown and the first event to be held on the new developing park. “Viking Fest will be a fun event for the whole family,” says Mike Miller, co-owner of Noble Order Brewing. “Visitors can travel back in time, so to speak, and see the way food and goods were made during the Viking Age. We hope families will make an entire weekend of it and truly become immersed in the Viking culture.”
Free Admission and Free Event Parking
Miller said that more activities and vendors are being added to the festival lineup, and an up-to-date schedule can be viewed on the festival’s Facebook page at VikingFestWhitestown. “We’ve got vendors coming from all around the Midwest and a large Viking group coming down from Kalamazoo, Michigan,” Miller said. “When we were hosting the festival in Richmond, it was turning into a really nice Midwest festival, and then we took a break for two years. That’s why we wanted to pick it back up and bring

it to Whitestown. It will be an educational and interactive experience that we think people will really enjoy.” Miller said there will be a caricature artist onsite, and festivalgoers are highly encouraged to come in costume or their best Viking-themed attire. Noble Order Brewing will have its Viking Ale and Mead, craft beers and wines onsite for purchase, and there will be an assortment of authentic Viking-themed foods also available for purchase. Rusted Silo will be roasting a pig onsite. There will also be turkey legs and smoked meats, and Grilliant Foods will be offering its Scotch eggs, and there will be cider for the kids. Guests should plan to bring cash since the festival will not be set up for WiFi purchases.
Viking Fest will be held at the site of a future park, located within the AllPoints at Anson Industrial area at 4671 Anson Blvd., Whitestown, IN 46075.
Note: There will be live wolfdogs on exhibit at the festival. Pets will not be permitted at the festival.

Tailored Living® featuring PremierGarage® The area of our home that is often ignored and unorganized is the garage. That’s where Tailored Living® featuring PremierGarage® excels. Owner Jon Elliott and his partner Tom Fleming have been in the business of providing the best in high-quality storage and home organization systems for both homes and businesses for 14 years. They offer free in-home or onsite consultations, expert measurement, innovative design and professional installation,
providing custom-tailored transformation according to your needs and specifications. If your garage is in dire need of transformation, that’s where their Total Garage Enhancement comes in. “Our designers create garage storage systems and organization solutions that work using a combination of garage cabinets, shelves, Slatwall wall storage systems, overhead racks and custom garage flooring,” says Elliott. “Your garage will be transformed into a masterpiece of utility and beauty, making garage organization a part of everyday life.” Elliott says custom garage cabinets give a clean, uniform look to your garage. “Cabinets bring order out of chaos by hiding everything behind closed doors. Clutter and piles are eliminated, and there’s a designated place for every item in the garage,” he says. If you have sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels and hoses, Elliott suggests you consider open wall storage, so nothing is stacked on the floor, creating a safety hazard.
Elliott maintains, however, that no garage design is truly complete without new garage flooring. “We offer custom garage floor coatings, which add beauty and utility, giving your garage a finished look and making it a more user-friendly space,” he says. Tailored Living® featuring PremierGarage® offers a wide variety of color and finish options, so you can coordinate your floor with garage cabinets, your car or even your favorite team’s logo. And all garage flooring options are designed to withstand the high traffic and heavy use that a garage endures on a daily basis. The low-maintenance floor is easier to care for than concrete, creating the ideal floor for a busy garage. PremierOne® floor coatings are the toughest floor coatings available and are a proprietary blend. Elliott says every floor will retain color and finish integrity for years to come. Nature’s Choice Landscaping is ready to take care of all your yard and landscaping needs. In business for 30 years, Nature’s Choice is a full-service landscape maintenance company with a retail garden center. Nature’s Choice provides a long list of services, including bare ground grass and weed control, lawn care applications, landscape recommendations and installations, mulch install and treatment, seeding and aeration, irrigation maintenance, tree and shrub pruning and removal and more. Owner Steve Cousins says this time of year, his company focuses on softscape installation, such as landscape bed makeovers. “Even well-maintained landscape beds may become very mature and overgrown after 10 or so years and may be in need of a touchup or a complete overhaul,” he says. He says many newly built homes may not have the type of plantings and design that the owner desires, and sometimes the species of plants selected may not match the area in which they are planted. “This is a great time of year to do a complete renovation or simply replace several items, such as trees, shrubs and
perennials. Or simply adding accents, such as boulders, stepping stones, fountains and/or flowering plants, to existing landscapes can greatly enhance your outdoor landscapes. And even a beautiful landscape could use an annual touchup by performing bed edging and adding a fresh layer of mulch,” says Cousins. He points out that his team of professionals has over 150 years of experience in horticulture, arborist services and softscape design and installation and is fully insured and licensed or certified in pest control and fertilization of turf, trees, shrubs and ponds. Additionally, he says that owning a Garden Center provides his clients with lots of plant and accent materials to choose from. “A new or fresh landscape will improve the look of your property, help property values, increase curb appeal and just allow you to enjoy your outdoor living space. Also, this type of work can be done over time to match any budget,” says Cousins. Nature’s Choice Landscaping is located at 3760 N. State Rd. 267, Brownsburg, IN 46112. You can contact them at 317-852-2647 or NaturesChoiceLandscaping.com.

Home Improvement tailor-made services for each client, offering either full design and construction services from demolition to completion of project or working with a client’s remodeler or builder to execute his plans. In addition, Banter offers a complimentary one-hour consultation to sit down and discuss a project with a client. “The complimentary service would give the client a one-on-one meeting with me, learn about my design philosophy and get a little information and insight as to how I would approach their project without any obligation,” he says. Banter says the number one thing about him is that he listens to his clients. “I absorb the meaning and significance behind their spoken words and design a ‘personal living space’ based on those words,” he says. “My vision is my own. Selftaught, not influenced by the principles of past design periods. I make it a point to include inspiration from art, the fashion industry and any creative endeavor.” He says he often includes a unique piece, sometimes whimsical or quirky, to incorporate into his designs, which personalizes the client’s living space. Banter says he’s unique in another way too: “My openness and desire to reach outside the typical room design, especially the kitchen, to create a one-of-a-kind room for all my clients.” You can contact Design by RLB by calling 224-688-3942, visiting designbyrlb.com or emailing rick@designbyrlb.com.

We love to marry the architecture with the exterior, so there is a seamless transition,” she says. “Our slogan is “The Difference is Design” because well-thought-out design can make any budget look like a million dollars as opposed to money spent on poor design decisions,” she says. New Leaf will create a total landscape master plan that includes every exterior element a client might want to explore from the oversight to the construction, pools, outdoor pool houses, patios, decks and outdoor kitchens. “Any fine outdoor living environment is our focus. We add so much value to the home in terms of creating a sense of natural privacy and a family getaway right in the backyard every day as well as stellar curb appeal. All of these elements add incredible value to the home financially and in terms of what really makes a home — happiness,” says Jacques.

I had a regular tune-up with Airtron and John was my service provider. He was great to work with. John helped me to understand the more technical aspects of my heating system. He took the time to look at my unit together with me and discuss options for managing my filtration system. His attention to those details and meeting me, the customer, halfway definitely made a difference. - Margaret C.
I have been using Airtron for four years since we moved here. I have found them to be prompt, courteous and competent. They serviced our old unit and installed a humidifier. When the 20+ year old furnace finally gave out, they sold and installed a new furnace and AC. Their maintenance service also is excellent. The service people are efficient and clearly know what they are doing. I have had nothing but positive experiences with Airtron. - Marcia

PINK MARTINI AT THE PALLADIUM

We interviewed would eventually lead to the genesis of Lauderdale who had some Hoosier roots in Pink Martini.
PALLADIUM: MARCH 17
What was your early childhood like with your family in Indiana? I had a pastural upbringing amidst the fireflies and thunderstorms. My parents had a plant nursery, Lauderdale Nursery, just north of Manchester and west of Warsaw, Indiana, on State Road 14. My parents were Caucasian and adopted a “rainbow tribe” of children. My parents were from the earnest side of the 1960s. While they weren’t particularly musical, they listened to music. My childhood consisted of Ray Thomas, Ray Charles, Roger Miller, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the soundtrack to “Jesus Christ Superstar.” When did you begin your classical piano training? I started piano at age 6 with Patricia (Pat) Garrison who was from the area and later with Joyanne Jones at Indiana University– Purdue University in Fort Wayne. What prompted your family to leave northern Indiana and move west to Portland, Oregon? In 1980, my father came “out of the closet,” and my parents divorced but remained close friends. This is unusual, even for today. My parents had discussed this before they married, but some people thought that if you got married, “it” [homosexuality] would go away. My mother wasn’t “tricked,” and I think that’s why they remained close afterward. We all moved to Portland to keep my family together. You attended Harvard University but not for musical studies. You graduated cum laude with a degree in History and Literature. What was your intended area of study? I thought that I was going to go into politics. I wanted to become Mayor of Portland. I wanted a broader education, applied to liberal arts colleges and ended up going to Harvard. As a sophomore, I could select where I wanted to live, so I lived in Shattuck International House. It was very well landscaped and was a concentrated house full of “freaks” and brilliant people. It was like going to a completely different school and was different from the rest of campus. I really blossomed there. When I went back to Oregon, I had a contract with the Oregon Symphony to play classical pieces and went to work in politics.
24

2018-02-26 3:40 PM
What made you divert to a totally different career path? In 1994, there was an attempt to make homosexuality illegal in Oregon. I was working on the campaign in opposition to it. I had just seen the Del Rubio Triplets on Pee Wee Herman’s Christmas Special. That special featured several major stars like Cher, Grace Jones, Frankie Avalon, k.d. lang, Charo, Oprah Winfrey, Magic Johnson and many more. The Del Rubio Triplets were super Catholic but pro-gay. They played guitar and sang covers of songs like “Walk like an Egyptian” and “Whip It.” I brought them into town to sing at local nursing homes, retirement homes and hospitals. At the end of their set, they would say, “Please vote no to Measure 13.” They were performing at a community fundraising concert and needed an opening act, so I threw on a cocktail dress and started playing. (Lauderdale was joined by a bass player, bongo player and a singer, and Pink Martini was born.)
Do you feel that you are making more of an impact as a musician rather than a politician? I never intended on becoming a band leader or ever being in a band. I thought I was going to try to become mayor, but as the years passed on, I realized that my career was going to be in music. Instead of working under fluorescent lights, we get to travel the world. Instead of “hate” mail, we get applause every night. Have you performed at the Palladium before? How long have you known Michael Feinstein? I haven’t seen the Palladium in person yet, but everybody that I talk to has told me that it is an unbelievable venue that sits in the center of Carmel, Indiana. I’ve known Michael for more than a decade. When I’m in New York City, I practice at his house. We recorded together for his more obscure tribute record to Sinatra (“The Sinatra Project”). Feinstein is one of the most important people working today in music and is certainly a champion of The Great American Songbook.
What should the audience expect at Pink Martini’s performance at the Palladium this month? The idea is that by the end of the night, everyone is out of their seats doing a conga line. Our audience is generally very diverse. We appeal to people of all ages, conservatives and liberals and everyone in between. We bring together people who normally would otherwise never sit under the same roof. The goal is to make people so deliriously happy that they will be enjoying a moment with one another despite any differences. For information on the performance and tickets visit, thecenterfortheperformingarts.org.

“Weird Al” Yankovic: The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour “Weird Al” Yankovic burst onto the scene over three decades ago and never looked back. For the first time in his storied career, the world’s foremost musical satirist and four-time Grammy-winner foregoes his usual high-octane, big-production show for an intimate evening of music, focusing on original (non-parody) songs from his 14-album catalog. After his 2016 world tour, including venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall, this is a rare opportunity to get up-close and personal with this legendary performer. Weird Al’s most recent album Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. In 2018 he will be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In these stripped-down shows, the British-born, Canada-raised artist shares behind-the-scenes stories and reveals the inspiration behind the songs.

Celtic Nights: Oceans of Hope
A native of Scotland, Paul Galbraith has shaken the world of classical guitar with his innovative style on the “Brahms Guitar,” an eight-string instrument he helped to design. Positioned like a cello and offering an additional octave beyond the standard guitar range, the revolutionary instrument opens new possibilities in technique and repertoire. Galbraith is known for his critically acclaimed recordings of works by Bach, Haydn and Brahms, as well as his own arrangements of folk tunes from various countries. The unique setup for this Palladium performance, with the audience seated on and around the stage, will create an intimate setting while making the most of the hall’s pristine acoustics.
This crew of singers, dancers and musicians champions the proud tradition of Celtic music and culture. native of New York, Stephenson was raised in Brooklyn and first caught the attention of scouts when he was 12 years old. Stephenson’s high school career gained him local and national recognition. As a high school junior, he was named to the annual “USA Today” All-USA boys basketball team, the only non-senior to be given that honor. Stephenson graduated as the career leading scorer in New York State’s basketball history. Stephenson attended the University of Cincinnati and joined the Bearcats for the 2009-10 season. He was named Big East Rookie of the Year. In 2010, he was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 40th pick of the 2010 NBA Draft and signed a multiyear contract.

Because of Stephenson’s early success as a shooting guard/small forward with the Pacers, opportunities as a free agent arose, and he became a free agent. The Pacers offered Stephenson a five-year contract valued at $44 million, but he opted out and signed a three-year, $27 million contract with the Charlotte Hornets. However, Stephenson never found the same success outside of Indiana, and he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers where he played until traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. Stephenson’s tour of NBA teams led him to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2016 and the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2017 before he would find himself returning to the Hoosier state in 2017 where he has become a fan favorite. At the time of this interview, the Pacers were just returning from a much-deserved All-Star break, and Stephenson had just returned from a visit to his hometown of Brooklyn where he visited with family and friends. “It was good to be back home with my family,” Stephenson said. “My high school team lost the semifinal, and I was kind of upset about that, but other than that, I spent time with my family and ate a lot of bad foods.” Though he enjoyed his time visiting his former stomping grounds in New York, Stephenson shared that he is a big fan of living in Zionsville. “I actually love
“ZIONSVILLE IS NICE AND PEACEFUL. THE PEOPLE AND MY NEIGHBORS ARE GREAT. THEY COME SOMETIMES. I JUST FEEL LIKE I’M ON VACATION WHEN I’M IN ZIONSVILLE. I FEEL VERY COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED. I LOVE THE AREA.” Zionsville,” Stephenson said. “Zionsville is nice and peaceful. The people and my neighbors are great. They come down sometimes. I just feel like I’m on vacation when I’m in Zionsville. I feel very comfortable and relaxed. I love the area. I have so much fun when I come back to Indy. I can relax and think about basketball and winning.” Stephenson has a platinum, life-size replica of a horse in his house. When we asked about it, he explained that it was inspired by his environment and his need to connect with his current Hoosier home. “I’ve got a lot of farms for neighbors who have cows and horses,” Stephenson said. “When my kids come, they’re like, ‘I want to ride the horses,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t think they’re [the neighbors] going to allow that.’ I actually do have a life-size ZIONSVILLE MONTHLY

horse in my house. I’m in Indiana, so I got a [replica] horse. I wanted to bring out the ‘Indiana’ in me. I’ve got so much land that I probably could have a farm back there, but I don’t think that I’d be good at taking care of it.” Stephenson also has the phrase “Born Ready” spelled out with decorative letters on a wall in his house. Bobbito Garcia, a courtside announcer at Rucker Park located in Harlem, dubbed Stephenson with that nickname during a game in 2006. The nickname that he’s carried with him throughout his career has great sentimental meaning to Stephenson. “What it means to me is about being ready at all times,” Stephenson explained. “It’s about being prepared for any type of war or anything. It’s also about playing hard. I feel that name has high expectations. I have to always be ready for any-

thing at any moment. Even if it’s me just coming up off the bench, I’m always ready. I try to come in there [the game] and change the atmosphere. I think I really do live up to that name.” As the Pacers strive to keep the pace towards the playoffs, Stephenson was cautious in speaking about that prospect, citing he didn’t want to “jinx” the opportunity, though he did offer his thoughts about playing against the iconic LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers. “We’ve got to get there [the playoffs] first,” Stephenson emphasized. “We’re only fifth place, and everybody’s close to each other, so I don’t want to talk about getting ready for playoffs and jinx it. I want to get there, so we’ve got to keep playing and stay hungry. We still have a lot of people underestimating us, so we’ve got a lot to prove. I don’t want to think about the playoffs right now, but it’s always good to play against LeBron. Everybody wants to see him [LeBron], and everybody knows that he’s one of the best players to have ever played the game, so all eyes are on us when we’re playing. Everybody’s playing their
greatest, and there’s so much that we want to do against LeBron and that team [Cavaliers]. Everybody’s watching, so it’s always fun to play against LeBron and the Cavs.” Many eyes are on Stephenson as well, and many depictions of his on-court antics have been immortalized on social media in the way of memes, the most famous one being of him blowing in LeBron’s ear. It is an image that Stephenson suspects will never cease to get old and die on social media. “It makes me laugh,” he said. “I see myself doing things [in memes], and I’m like, ‘Man, I did that?’ It’s always fun to see stuff like that. That meme of my blowing [in LeBron’s ear] will never die. You can use that in anything. There are still memes of me blowing on all kinds of stuff and with different people. I don’t think it’s ever going to die out.” When preparing for a game, Stephenson keeps to a similar routine before heading over to Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “I wake up and get a good breakfast with a lot of fruits,” he said. “Sometimes, I go into my little gym at my house and go
in the sauna and do a little lift before I come here; sometimes, not all the time. My mind is just on winning and trying to do the best I can. I think about defense first because our defensive coach is on us, and then I think about making my shots after that. I know that defense is way more important than scoring sometimes. We [as a team] have to keep playing hard and keep winning because we’ve still got more to show everyone.” Like the old saying that rest sharpens a razor, Stephenson’s relaxed life in Zionsville seems to help keep him “Born Ready” to compete for the Pacers.

Leading the Library into Another
Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of Zionsville Library
Last month, the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library announced that Sarah Moore had been selected as its new executive director. Moore previously served as the director of Richwood-North Union Public Library in Richwood, Ohio, for more than seven years. She began her role in Zionsville on February 19.
M
oore was unanimously selected by the Library Board of Trustees during a special meeting on January 23 and came to the role with more than 15 years of diverse library experience. “We are very excited to have Sarah join our team,” said Library Board President Sandy Sifferlen. “She has a demonstrated a record of leadership and strategic vision.” Moore earned her master’s degree in Library Science at Indiana University Bloomington and has held a variety of positions at libraries in Colorado, Indiana and Ohio. “I’ve always liked Indiana,” Moore said. “I’d gone back from time to time to Bloomington. I moved back to Ohio after Colorado because I wanted to be closer to my family, and I enjoy living and working
in the Midwest. After seven-and-a-half years at Richwood-North Union Public Library, I thought it was time for a new challenge. I saw the position open up in Zionsville and thought that the town seemed amazing and that the library was very impressive. And that’s how I ended up in Zionsville.” Moore shared what she immediately liked about the Zionsville community was that everyone was extremely friendly to her and appeared to support the local library. “That [community support] was something that I was looking for,” she said. “It makes a big difference when you’re in a community that really values its library and supports its services. I could see that level of support based upon program numbers and a very active

library foundation. I could see that the library has the support of its community, and I thought that was very impressive. It surprised me how people have been so welcoming right away. The library staff has been welcoming and is going to be a pleasure to work with.” Moore shared her thoughts on how libraries, nationwide and locally, are looking at ways to remain relevant in today’s high-tech climate. As the new executive director, she is learning the library’s current amenities and programs while keeping the future in the forefront. “I think that the future of libraries, in general, is developing them into community centers,” Moore explained. “Libraries are inviting people in but are also going outside of the library and creating relationships and partnerships while working with the needs of the community. Libraries are finding ways to provide information that is not only provided by traditional reading. There are all kinds of ways that people get and use information, and that’s the challenge to libraries today.” Moore concluded, “I think that as libraries are opening up and becoming community centers, they are doing something that will keep them relevant. I see this at Zionsville. While the library has several people coming in and out of it on a regular basis, it is actively going out into the community with its programs and meeting people where they are. There are many interactive programs. In regards to technology, this library embraces it and is staying at the forefront of it.” Moore agreed with the sentiment that a library is a community’s hub for information and education in addition to the local educational institutions and that there should always be a strong relationship between those institutions and the community library.

Connecting Women of Impact in Boone County Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Submitted and JJ Kaplan
A
little more than a year ago, a group of dedicated women from Boone County created an opportunity for the women of the county who were looking for a way to give back while meeting other like-minded ladies. This group of phenomenal women created Women of Impact (WOI), a philanthropic women’s group coordinated by the Community Foundation of Boone County (CFBC). WOI was designed to provide financial support for local nonprofit organizations while creating a sense of community.
Community Foundation of Boone County In 1990, the Lilly Endowment had a vision for communities across Indiana to build permanent endowments to support development and quality of life in our state. Determining that local citizens
were the best experts on the needs in their community, this vision manifested in the form of supporting the development of a community foundation in each of Indiana’s 92 counties, including Boone. CFBC was founded in 1991 with the help of caring Boone County residents, $15,000 and a series of statewide matching grants from the Lilly Endowment initiative called Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT). Since 1991, CFBC has granted over $20 million from its various funds to nonprofit organizations and programs working to solve county-wide challenges throughout Boone County. The Community Impact Fund (CIF) is the Community Foundation of Boone County’s largest unrestricted endowment pool of dollars and can be used for various projects, programs and initiatives that improve the quality of life in Boone County.

How WOI Works In its first year, WOI has grown to 166 members county-wide and has made a considerable impact on the community, donating over $50,000 directly to Boone County organizations. In 2017, WOI awarded $54,260 to four nonprofits: Boone County Cancer Society, Lebanon Area Boys & Girls Club, Humane Society for Boone County and Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center. The same year, WOI added $14,420 to the Women’s Fund endowment. WOI members commit to donating $100 annually to the Women’s Fund endowment at the Community Foundation of Boone County and additional quarterly donations, based on membership type, to support the four nonprofits selected by the members throughout the year. “The foundation exists to support the nonprofits of our community,” explained Gabi Youran, director of community rela-

tions at CFBC. “CFBC connects donors to the causes that they care about. WOI is a program with the foundation that was created by some dedicated women who were exploring new ways to utilize the Women’s Fund endowment. After several meetings and discussions, the group of women decided that the simplest and most effective way to implement positive change within the community would be to organize a giving circle program. WOI is modeled after 100 Women Who Care, a national model that started in Cleveland, Ohio. We adopted that model and tweaked it as we saw fit for our community. We had a great first year. It went beyond our expectations as far as numbers and the impact that we made. Our goal was to have 100 members by the end of the first year. We had 100 members at the end of our first quarterly meeting.” With more than 85 percent of its membership recommitting for 2018, Youran and her fellow WOI members feel optimistic that they will reach the goal of 100 members once again. Jane Perkins was one of the original organizers of WOI, along with Youran and Susan Albers. All three women are Zionsville residents. “The giving circle concept interested us because it is such an approachable model,” Perkins said. “We just knew right away that it was a right fit for what we were trying to accomplish. We knew there were women in Boone County who cared and wanted to support the nonprofits, but it was just overwhelming to know where to begin. The giving circle is a good way for women in Boone County to get involved.” Albers spoke about the educational arm of WOI and how the members select the nonprofits to which they award grants. “The educational component is beautiful because the women who attend learn about different nonprofits that are in the county every time we meet,” she said. “We hear about three different nonprofits that are presented at each meeting. You’re learning more about these different nonprofits and can get further involved if you would like to. Members get to nominate a nonprofit, and they throw a name in a hat when they arrive. Then later on that evening,
Zionsville_2018_March_Boone County Community Foundation.indd 2
three of those names are chosen from the hat, and if yours is chosen, you get up and present before the membership.” “You are given five minutes to present, and then there is a five-minute period for questions,” Perkins said. “Afterwards, the members vote on the recipient based on those presentations.” Whitestown resident and WOI member Vickie Hall enjoys the component of getting to know who “wins” by the end of the meeting. “We all get to know by the

end of the night, which is really fun,” Hall said. “You get that instant gratification that night of knowing exactly where your money went and who it’s going to help.” The selected nonprofit is invited to speak at the following WOI meeting to explain how the grant money was used, adding an element of accountability to the giving circle model. Zionsville resident Audra Poe said, “WOI is not only a great way for multi-generation women in our community to get together, but it brings the younger donors into an atmosphere where they can feel comfortable, and it also gives some of the more obscure nonprofits more exposure.” CFBC board member and Thorntown resident Jennifer Scott talked about membership options. She stressed that while shared members get the right to a vote, it is a shared vote between the two members. “General members get to vote at the meetings,” Scott said. “If you’re sharing a membership, meaning you each pay $250, then you only get one vote between you. You want to make sure that the person you are sharing a membership with is like-minded and has the same views going into a vote because you could end up being torn over which nonprofit to vote for at the meeting.” WOI offers a general membership, shared membership and also an associate membership. The associate membership was established for women under the age of 30 who can enjoy a reduced financial commitment while being sponsored by a general member until the associate member turns 30. It is a way to engage younger women who are becoming established and may not be in a position to maintain the general or shared membership fee requirements. The WOI first quarter meeting is March 21 in the Cardinal Room at the Golf Club of Indiana. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. with networking, appetizers and a cash bar until 6 p.m. The meeting begins promptly at 6 p.m. and concludes at 7 p.m. For more information on CFBC, WOI and membership information, contact Gabi Youran, director of community relations, at gabi@communityfoundationbc.org.

armel Monthly is excited to announce it has entered into an agreement with Concerts for a Cause (CFAC) to become its media sponsor for 2017. Created in 2016 by local residents Bruce Kidd and Steve Neely, CFAC produces four live music events featuring outstanding local and nationally recognized talent each year at the opulent Lucas Estate. The proceeds of ticket sales are donated to a small local not-for-profit that provides needed support to local residents. Kidd and Neely are longtime friends that share a passion for music and giving back to their communities. A couple of years ago, the two got the idea of combining their shared passions, and CFAC was the result. Along the way, they got family and friends, like Zionsville resident Jillian Ashton, involved. Both Kidd and Neely have sat on the boards of large national not-for-profits like JDRF (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). However, with CFAC, they wanted to do something different. One of the unique things about CFAC (and one of the reasons Carmel Monthly was so excited to get involved) is the fact that all the proceeds of ticket sales for each event goes to a different small local not-for-profit. This is made possible due to the generous donation of food by Sysco and contributions by local breweries and liquor distributor, along with Gold Sponsors like The Ackerman Foundation, The Heritage Group and Key Bank.
Kidd explained by designating a small organization as the benefactor, the amount of money an event like CFAC raises can have an immense effect on the persons that these local charities serve. For example, the most recent CFAC on January 27 had 250 people in attendance and donated almost $20,000 to Random Acts of Flowers, an organization that delivers 1,500 surprise floral arrangements and moments of kindness each month to elderly patients in local hospitals. Kidd and Neely further noted that CFAC’s mission of supporting a variety of small organizations comes from the servant leadership philosophy of the other CFAC Board members who believe you should “do all the good you can, for as many people as you can, in all the ways you can, for as long as you can.” What CFAC has accomplished to date is nothing less than remarkable. Attendance at events has grown each year and so too has the amount of money CFAC has been able to donate to each not-for-profit. In 2016, it averaged 120 people per event and donated a total of $25,000 to four organizations. In 2017, the four concerts were attended by over 700 people and resulted in almost $40,000 being donated to four worthy not-for-profits. While raising money for a local charity is the principal purpose of the events, make no mistake about the first-class quality of the events. CFAC events are designed to be a full evening of entertainment for the 200-250 guests that attend. All four events in 2018 will be hosted at the beautiful Lucas Estate in Carmel. The $75 ticket to attend includes:

• Pre-concert reception featuring outstanding food prepared by Lucas Estate Chef Anthony Puma • An open bar featuring local craft beers, wine, bourbon tasting and soft drinks • A fantastic local artist who opens the show • An outstanding national artist as the headliner • A chance to meet both artists in person • An opportunity to learn about the organization supported that evening and meet their leadership team • The opportunity to impact fellow Hoosiers’ lives with all revenue from ticket sales being donated to a local not-for-profit organization It is with great pride that we at Carmel Monthly join forces with Concerts for a Cause to help those in need in our communities.
The next CFAC event will be April 7 at the Lucas Estate with Indy singer-songwriter Jay Elliott opening and Martin Sexton as the headliner. The organization being supported, the Little Wish Foundation, grants wishes to children battling life-threatening disease or illness. If you haven’t heard of Martin Sexton, here’s what two of the biggest stars in music today had to say about his performance: “I’ve been a fan of his for quite a bit more than a decade, and it’s a real pleasure to finally share the stage with him. I hope that if you never heard him before, tonight is a turning point for you. He’s one of my favorite singers … Y’all have a good time with Martin Sexton.” –Dave Matthews “The best live performer I’ve ever seen. I may just quit my job and go follow Martin and make a fuss everywhere I go, just to make sure that people don’t go their lives without hearing this man sing to them.” –John Mayer To learn more about Sexton go to martinsexton.com To purchase tickets and support this great cause go to, indyconcertsforacause.org.

A RACE WITH A VIEW

ike Cole, founder and race director of Zionsville Half Marathon and 5K, is pleased with the increased registration figures he is seeing for this year’s half marathon. “It looks like we’ll have upwards of 500-600 this year based on registration traffic,” Cole said. “That’s a good number for us.” Cole, who competed in track and cross country while he attended Ball State University, is also a running coach and personal trainer who works with people at all levels of experience, from beginners to those who are competing in marathons. He purposely designed the Zionsville Half Marathon course to showcase the community and take runners through “the best sides of Zionsville.” The half marathon will be a single-looped course, starting and finishing downtown on the bricks. The race runs through several scenic Zionsville neighborhoods, goes partially along the Zionsville
Rail Trail and then back into the village. “People come downtown, and they walk around,” Cole said. “They eat breakfast at Rosie’s and eat lunch at Greek’s Pizzeria. Some will stay afterward and shop and enjoy the things that Zionsville has to offer. It’s nice to be able to take runners through the town, through the different neighborhoods and trails. It’s definitely not a flat course, but it’s not a super hilly course either.” Prize money is awarded to the top three overall males and females and first place masters in the half marathon. Medals are awarded to all finishers in both races. Age group awards are presented in both the Half and the 5K run. Overall awards are presented to the winners of the 5K. The Zionsville Half Marathon and 5K will both begin on April 15 at 7:30 a.m. There is a three-hour time limit on the half marathon, and the age minimum is 10 years old. Refreshments, including pizza, will be available after the race. One free beer will

be awarded to all finishers 21 and over with a valid ID as well as 15 percent off all menu items at Greek’s Pizzeria. Local supporting sponsors of the Zionsville Half Marathon include Endurance House, Run 2 Race, Greek’s Pizzeria, Oyler Dentistry, New Balance and Blue Rub. Cole announced registration is currently open for the inaugural 4th of July Big Boom 5K run that will start and finish on the bricks in downtown Zionsville and will step off at 7:30 a.m. Registration and event information for both races can be found at run2race.com. Zionsville Monthly is proud to be the media sponsor for this great event in downtown Zionsville.
