However, this month’s cover introduces our readers to a local grower, 4:21 Hemp Company, who has expanded the number of crops being harvested in Boone County to include hemp. With the growth of CBD related products and recent changes to state and federal laws, more and more Indiana farmers are looking to hemp as a new cash crop. In our cover story, you will meet the local farmers that are growing hemp and, in conjunction with a local hemp processor, are beginning to offer finished CBD products. Last month, the Humane Society for Boone County (HSforBC) hired its first executive director, Susan Austin, who is no stranger to HSforBC or its volunteers and donors. HSforBC board members selected Austin, a volunteer since 2009, to fill the position after a thorough search and interview process. She has volunteered for HSforBC to foster and as an animal wellness coordinator, board member, board president, chair of the fundraising committee and certified shelter technician.

ustin brings a strong work and volunteer history of planning, marketing and event sponsorship to the position. She earned a Certificate in Fundraising Management (CFRM) from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. I have met with Austin many times over the last seven years to promote HSforBC and highlight the immediate needs of our county’s stray, neglected and/ or forfeited animals. Amid the pandemic, these needs have only grown in number and in severity.
Our Local Humane Society Needs Our Support
abused, neglected and abandoned dogs and cats in Boone County. The primarily volunteer and private not-for-profit 501(c) (3) rescue organization operates a shelter facility at 5366 South Indianapolis Road in Whitestown. HSforBC board members and volunteers, along with the financial support from donors, have created a solid foundation through fundraising, planning and saving funds to acquire the shelter facility in 2016 and renovate it. And it calls upon Boone County residents and businesses for their support this holiday season so that HSforBC can continue to operate its services and programs that go well beyond caring for animals at the shelter.

It is important that local residents and businesses donate resources and time to our local Humane Society because that support funds not only the immediate needs of the cats and dogs brought into the shelter, but it also ensures that the HSforBC’s programs and services are funded as well. These programs/services include pet pantries, TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) and spay/neuter resources, adoption events and community events. Many of the traditional fundraisers have been canceled due to the pandemic. So, the Boone County community’s support has become even more imperative. It is with the community’s support and donations that Austin and her devoted volunteers are able to supply aid to Zionsville and the other Boone County communities with services like TNR and organized pet pantries. The other surrounding county humane societies do not assist with the costs of these local services nor provide these services in Zionsville. “We are actively looking for sponsors to help with our pet food pantries,” Austin

said. “The need for our pet pantries is expanding, and we have a percentage of our population in Boone County that is not back to full employment. So, we are reaching out to let people know if they need our services, please call us and we can get you pet food! It is my fear that people who need help with pet food are taking food off their own table, so we [HSforBC] are looking for sponsors so that we can be prepared to help with pet food as the effects of this pandemic continue to impact people in our county.”
Now Is a Perfect Time to Foster! For those remarkable souls who choose to foster for HSforBC, Austin shared that HSforBC provides the medicines and food for the animal being fostered. Austin and the volunteers work especially hard at making the best matches for both the animals and the folks who are fostering. “I understand if we don’t have the right animal for you [to adopt], but please adopt,” Austin implored. “I know there are people out there in our community who are very lonely and are staying home. This
may be a perfect time to consider fostering. Maybe not a kitten but a cat or an older dog that is already housebroken. We provide the heartworm, flea and tick and all the medicines and food. If the animal needs spayed/neutered, we take of that. And fostering helps us keep space open at the shelter.” Austin continued, “We’re not trying to warehouse animals. We bring them in and care for them to the best of our abilities without overcrowding and causing disease to spread or adding stress for the animals, which is why fostering is such a huge function of our Humane Society.”
and items it needs to best care for the animals in its charge. “Since we’re not able to do Whiskerfest this year and because we had to cancel all of our fundraisers since March, we will be taking advantage of Giving Tuesday on December 1—a Facebook fundraising opportunity,” Austin shared. “We will also be hosting auctions on Facebook and coming up with other fun and impactful fundraising ideas. We are open to any suggestions and ideas from our supporters!” Austin concluded, “Our current supporters have been phenomenal, and I want to thank each and every one of them. They have been with us all along, and we are truly blessed. That support gives me hope, and it shows that this organization we’ve worked so hard for has a great foundation to expand upon. We want people in our county to know that we’re still here and we’re still providing services to the best of our abilities.”
How Can You Help? As previously mentioned, you can help HSforBC by fostering an animal, sponsoring a pet pantry or simply donating money. Food donations, while graciously accepted by HSforBC, can be tricky because each animal has different dietary needs and may be recovering from illness or allergies. Austin suggested monetary donations so that HSforBC can maximize its buying power and purchase the food

The pandemic is no match for our community’s holiday spirit! The longstanding tradition of the Holiday Home Tour will go on, albeit VIRTUAL this year. This year’s Virtual Holiday Home Tour, presented by Zionsville Show Choirs (ZSI), will feature six beautifully decorated homes and devoted members of ZSI under the direction of co-directors Sam Chenoweth and Deana Broge.

n lieu of tickets, you have the opportunity to donate to the spectacular Zionsville Show Choirs—who have been greatly impacted by the pandemic and by the loss of fundraising revenue. “Like everything, it’s going to be different this year,” Chenoweth expressed. “There’s been more ‘prepare on your own’ versus in-class rehearsals. These kids have had to pivot through a lot of stuff.” This year’s Royalaires presidents Daniel Toluhi and Morgan Browne shared what it’s been like adapting and preparing for this year’s Holiday Home Tour. “I would say that flexibility and personal responsibility have been the biggest lessons throughout this whole process,” Browne shared. “Holiday Home Tour is one of our biggest events all year, and it’s one of the most collaborative. We’re introducing it to the community in a different way this year, but we still have to do a lot of the same work, rehearsing numbers on our own and preparing them like we do any other season.”

Toluhi added, “I think [Holiday Home Tour] is something we can all be really proud of. It’s been a real lesson on learning how to adapt, but I feel like that’s something we learn every year through ZSI, no matter the situation. I feel that we’re prepared to battle something like this and am really proud of the whole choir because it’s been a lot of hard work. Holiday Home Tour is one of our biggest events and fundraisers, and it’s nice that we are able to produce it and adapt in a way that is most fitting for what we can do.”
Performing as a “Thank You” for the Community’s Support Knowing that the pandemic has created hardships for many members of our community, including business owners who traditionally sponsor ZSI’s programs, counting the Holiday Home Tour, Broge emphasized ZSI’s appreciation for all that support. “Sam and I were able to sit down and tighten up the budget this year because we know it’s been hard on everybody,” Broge said. “We are so
grateful for the support, the sponsorship and the friendship. So many of our small businesses have continued to step up and sponsor. We hope that Holiday Home Tour will bring some holiday spirit to everyone who clicks on the link without the pressure of having to pay. We think it’s a nice way for us to say ‘thank you’ to the community. The kids have risen to the occasion, and we hope that we are providing a vehicle for them to continue to enjoy music and perform. Although the pandemic thwarted plans for their 23rd Annual Christmas Tour, the Grammy Award nominee and multiplatinum-selling jazz icon Dave Koz is rounding up a few fellow performers for a Dec. 12 virtual concert event titled “The Greatest Hits of Christmas 2020.”
Joining him for the one-night-only livestream will be Jonathan Butler, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Peter White, David Benoit and vocalist Rebecca Jade. The pandemic has literally impacted the entire planet and every industry. How have you, personally, been coping and what are your thoughts as we start to look into 2021? Are you hopeful that we’re going to be in a better place this time next year? For me, personally, music has helped me cope during this year. It has been such a difficult year for everybody, and music has a way of soothing, healing and calming in a way that other forms of media just don’t have. So, I have hope this concert will bring a lot of healing and comfort to people during this very difficult holiday season. I do feel, intuitively, that we’re moving towards a better place and— God willing—2021 will be a better year for all of us.

Your latest album, “A New Day,” is a masterpiece. It’s like the soundtrack to our lives these past eight months. I also think it’s the perfect gift this holiday season, so my readers out there need to pick up a copy! While “The Closer We Get” is my favorite track from this album, “Summertime in NYC” has an exceptional vibe, and the video is phenomenal as well. You wrote and produced this during the pandemic— what went into creating NYC amid the quarantine? Thank you so much for the beautiful comments about the album. It really was a labor of love for me. It was a milestone because I’ve never made an album completely in quarantine before. It goes against how we normally make albums, which is everybody in a room together, feeding off of each other. We had none of that this time. I wrote “Summertime in NYC” in NYC on March 14. I will always remember that day because it was the day we all kind of realized that our lives were going to significantly change. You collaborated with a star-studded list of musicians on this song and album—including Brian McKnight on vocals for “Summertime in NYC.” We were writing this song about NYC in NYC, which was one of the first places [in the US] to get hit really hard by the pandemic, and as the world was closing down outside, and instead of going to a place of fear in the studio,
we kind of called upon our feel-good music heroes. Bill Withers [who passed on March 30, 2020], we kind of called his spirit into the studio—Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago, my
favorite bands—and we put together this feelgood song that almost passed the pandemic to a place where we were beyond it and healing. We had Brian McKnight come in, and he brought a whole level of positivity and fun to the track. We also had Earth, Wind & Fire’s Ralph Johnson come in and play on the track, giving it his blessing, which was nice.
It’s been rather quiet at the Palladium as we haven’t had our live headliners come through [due to COVID-19], so I appreciate you accepting this interview and reminding people that you care and are missing us as much as we’re missing you. We will definitely be tuning in to see you on Dec. 12. I think on some level we will be able to feel the energy coming from Carmel, Indiana, and from that area of the country [the night of the virtual concert]. The relationship that we have with the venues and audiences that we see every year is one of the things that’s so powerful about Christmas traditions. Every year, we see parents with their kids, and now those kids have kids of their own, so it’s
another generation coming to the show every year. That connection that we build with audiences all over the country gets stronger and has proven to be very special to me on a personal level. And we’re not letting the rest of this year fly by without getting a little slice of the holidays with each and every one of our fans across the country. We look forward to a much happier new year ahead, and we will see you—in person—next year if it’s the last thing I do.

Officially opening at the end of January 2021, Feinstein’s is giving us something to look forward to after a long spell without live music and entertainment.

Modeled after Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York City and in the spirit of the Great American Songbook, this unique cabaret promises an unforgettable experience.
Experience Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael For those who have experienced Feinstein’s/54 Below in NYC, the concept is quite similar and inspired much of the carefully curated details that have
gone into Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael. The main room seats a maximum of 143 and offers a private dining option in a room partitioned off the main room that seats up to 16 people. The wall opens, allowing the private dinner party to watch and enjoy the entertainment. Audience members can order “small bites” offered through the hotel and distinctive cocktails from the nightclub’s refined bar and spirits collection while enjoying the show. I spoke with Hotel Carmichael’s General Manager Jamie Hopwood and the notable general manager at Feinstein’s/54 Below, John Iachetti, who’s also an integral part of the Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael team. We discussed what makes this club—in Carmel—so
extraordinary and how it stands apart from Michael Feinstein’s other signature clubs. Iachetti is a huge fan of Carmel’s. “When I [first] visited Michael [Feinstein] in Carmel, the city had just started building the Palladium,” Iachetti said. “It’s such a great city. The people are amazing, it feels good, it smells good—it’s all the good stuff!” When asked how Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael compares to the NYC club, Iachetti said, “When we designed this club, we took the best of all of our clubs. It’s going to be approachable and vibrant, and like Feinstein’s/54 Below, people will be able to see national artists—including friends of Michael’s that perform in NYC, San Francisco and LA—as well as artists and shows

that are local to the community.” With regards to programming the entertainment and looking beyond the pandemic, Iachetti continued, “We’ve learned that there’s plenty of entertainment and a big enough audience for us to provide quality entertainment. It won’t happen right away, but we definitely have a blueprint that will begin with a couple shows a week and work our way up to five or six days a week. It’s going to be spectacular. If you close your eyes and listen to the performer—such as Michael [Feinstein] or someone like Rita Moreno or Storm Large—it will be like they are there in your living room. And people love to come out and eat and be entertained. It’s all about the experience, and it’s approachable. What could be better?”
A Purpose-Built Venue As the construction of Feinstein’s came to completion, it became glaringly obvious that the original timetable and schedule of events to commemorate the cabaret’s grand opening were going to be delayed until such time when the pandemic-related restrictions would permit. As that timetable looks to be the end of January 2021, the space is open and available for private functions. “The flexibility to use that space and utilize it for function space and private events is what makes the space one-ofa-kind and special out of all of Michael’s clubs so far,” Hopwood shared. “We’re still navigating through and looking at what’s going on in the world to kind of guide us with regards to what the grand opening will look like. A lot of things have changed in the hospitality industry and restaurant business now, and I think
we need to be creative and figure out how we can maximize the space that we have and the opportunities for the owners. We are already seeing an immense amount of interest in renting out the entire space and have already hosted private events in this space.” Iachetti added, “We have the best audiovisual—the best sound and lights— so, it’s a great room for private events, rehearsal dinners, weddings, bachelor or bachelorette parties. You name it—you’ll be able to do it here.” As we all look forward to 2021 with hopes of it being a better and healthier year, we’re also chomping at the bit to be entertained, once again, by live music and shows. In the spirit of better days ahead, Hopwood is also collaborating with the Center for the Performing Arts as it is literally a stone’s throw from the Hotel Carmichael. “We look at the Center as a partnership,” Hopwood said. “I think it’s important that we work in conjunction with each other to ensure the success of the entire performing arts campus. As we continue to evolve, develop and grow, that partnership will get stronger. a space that will be welcoming and conducive to making a connection between the performer and the audience. As far as the entertainment—it’s going to be quite eclectic because we will indeed have nightclub shows in the sense that some people might visualize a nightclub, but we also want to have after-hours jazz [sessions] and special events in the daytime. We want to be able to use the room for all different kinds of purposes, where people can gather in an intimate space and enjoy the feeling of connection and comfort that this room will hopefully offer. Will there be any collaboration with the Center for the Performing Arts and/or the Great American Songbook Foundation as well as other local talent? I have all kinds of ideas about different types of entertainment that can be featured in the room. For example, I think it would be wonderful to have ‘Talent Night’ one night a week and create an ongoing experience for the community to participate. I have spoken with the staff at the Center for Performing Arts about creating this. We could also have a night where we feature music that is part of a collection of the Great American Songbook. We have this amazing archive of orchestration and Big Band charts. I was thinking how great it would be to have one night a week Big Band Night, and maybe have students from different music schools from local universities or other fine musicians that reside in the area as guest performers. You mentioned utilizing the room for other events and activities during the daytime. Would this space be available for private functions and meeting space as well? There is so much potential that it’s dizzying. We can have different events for charities and causes as well as for special events. And of course, we have the private dining room that has a wall that opens up to the entertainment space. So, one can have a special event where you have dinner in a private space and then the wall opens up to the nightclub room so you can see the show. How was Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael inspired by your NYC club, Feinstein’s/54 Below? One of the things that’s great about New York is that if you go to the theater or you go

When I became aware of the type of hotel the Carmichael was to be—an upscale design—which in my book means elegant yet comfortable, it occurred to me that this would be a marvelous place to have a club because of the proximity to so many other wonderful venues nearby.

I thought, wouldn’t it be great to have a place where people could come after going to a show at the Center for the Performing Arts or the Tarkington? Just to have a place where people can congregate after, enjoy a jazz group or live music, and this [Feinstein’s] could be another option for people. I think it will extend the pleasure of whatever experience they had earlier. For those who have enjoyed an evening at a nightclub such as Feinstein’s/54 Below, they will automatically get the concept, but please share with us what a cabaret truly is. There are probably people who don’t know exactly what a cabaret is, and they may have some preconceived notions that are not necessarily accurate. Which reminds me, on the rare occasion that I watched “American Idol,” Simon Cowell would sometimes criticize a singer and say, “Oh, that’s so cabaret,” and I thought, is that not the most ignorant statement to make? To him [Cowell], that was an insult, but then I thought, he doesn’t know what a cabaret is. It is a physical space where any kind of music is performed, so how can you criticize someone by saying that “It’s so cabaret”? What does that even mean? That’s like saying, “That’s so Empire State Building.” A cabaret is really what people make it. There will be all different kinds of musical experiences and live acts such as comedians, so the sky is the limit. The types of entertain-
In addition to adding another layer of fun and entertainment, Feinstein’s is within walking distance to several retail shops and restaurants. Is it a goal for City Center businesses, Hotel Carmichael/Feinstein’s, and the Center for Performing Arts to cross-promote each other and make it a destination for visitors and residents of Carmel alike? Well, that’s the hope. We want to help expand what’s happening here and add to it in whatever way that we can. What can we, the community, and devoted fans of yours, do amid the pandemic to help with this endeavor so that when we can all come out and be together again, we can help make Feinstein’s an outstanding success? Generally supporting the arts is important because it is, to me, just as fundamental as the three Rs: reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic. The arts are part of a community’s identity. They create unity and harmony—no pun intended. The arts connect us on a heart level that puts aside everything else and helps us to see the common connection that we all have. For me, this has been a time of recalibration. It is a time to look inward and see what we need to change in our lives because the planet is clearly giving us a message that we have to make changes, and it starts with each individual. I’ve been spending a lot of time looking at myself and trying to be a better person and figure out what I can do to help make the world better for other people. Because this [pandemic] has dramatically demonstrated that there is no separation between any of us.

SOCIAL SECURITY: UNDERSTANDING ELIGIBILITY AND ENROLLMENT One of the most common topics of discussion regarding Social Security is the program’s solvency. As of 2018, the estimated depletion date of the Social Security Trust Fund is the year 2034, based on estimates of future benefit distributions and future inflows. After that date, Social Security expects to pay out 79% of promised benefits until 2090.

Even if an individual is divorced, he or she can still receive benefits on the ex-spouse’s record. To be eligible for divorced spousal benefits one must meet the following criteria: 1. The marriage must have lasted for 10 years or longer 2. The individual is unmarried (ex-spouse can be re-married)
Benefit eligibility generally requires a worker to accumulate 40 credits. Credits are obtained through the payment of FICA taxes with a maximum of four quarters (credits) per year. Sufficient earnings for 10 years or more will qualify a worker for retirement benefits. Once 40 credits are obtained and a worker becomes eligible to start receiving Social Security benefits, the benefit amount is calculated based on an average of the worker’s highest 35 years of indexed earnings. In addition, spouses of workers (divorced or still married), workers who have become disabled, workers disabled before a certain age, survivors of deceased workers, and children of deceased workers will often be eligible for benefits.
The benefit paid to an exspouse will be the maximum of 50% of the primary worker’s full retirement age benefit. This amount will be reduced if taken before full retirement age and will also be reduced by any benefit the ex-spouse is entitled to receive from their own Social Security record. If an individual remarries, he or she generally cannot collect benefits on the former spouse’s record unless the remarriage ends by death, divorce, or annulment. Finally, a divorced individual will be eligible to elect spousal benefits upon reaching age 62 if the primary worker has also already filed for benefits. One exception allows the ex-spouse to receive benefits at or after age 62 regardless of whether the former spouse has started benefits as long as the marriage ended two or more years prior.

If an individual has a spouse eligible to receive benefits, he or she may elect payment of benefits on the spouse’ record as early as age 62. A widower age 60 or older may receive benefits on a deceased spouse’s record. Additionally, a surviving divorced spouse may also receive benefits under certain circumstances. Many other individuals may be eligible under the survivor rule including widow/widowers caring for deceased’s children, unmarried children under

a certain age, certain individuals who have a disability or are caring for an individual with a disability, stepchildren, grandchildren, adopted children, and parents who were financially dependent on the deceased for at least half of their support.

Along with the hopes for a better new year, the Kite Harris Property Group is looking to break ground on its mixed-use development at the southeast corner of County Road 300 South and U.S. 421 (aka 146th Street and North Michigan Road).
A
ppaloosa Crossing will soon offer 264,000 square feet of retail and office space, restaurants, a gas station and a single-family housing development for empty nesters. The architectural details and equestrian themes throughout the development have been carefully curated by the development group, Kite Harris Property Group, and the landowners, Harris Family Limited Partnership. We spoke with Zionsville resident and developer/property manager Bob Harris about the details of the project and the benefits it will bring area residents as well as existing and new businesses who have committed to relocating to Appaloosa Crossing in 2021.
The Harris Family Limited Partnership The Harrises are no strangers to the area and have been landowners in Zionsville since the 1960s. The Harris Family Limited Partnership owns commercial buildings in downtown Zionsville and developed the mixed-use project on South Main Street near 106th Street that houses Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream and Alchemy Spirit House, among other tenants.
Introducing Appaloosa Crossing The 55 acres of rural fields at the future site of Appaloosa Crossing will soon boast additional amenities for area residents, such as an early childhood development facility, a 10,000-square-foot medical office space and a 21st Amendment liquor store. Many of these businesses have inked
deals with Harris and will begin construction in early 2021. While the development has the space for a grocer, Harris confirmed that no deals are currently on the table, but he would like to see a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods type of grocer eventually become part of Appaloosa Crossing. Harris shared, “We’re under contract for 22 of the 55 acres with an empty-nester developer that has submitted plans to the planning commission to build 75 to 80 high-end homes.” The development will also have walking paths and trails throughout its interior. “We have 21st Amendment on one of the [development’s] out lots, and we have a local dentist who is interested in relocating there and taking up 5,000 square feet of the 10,000-square-foot medical office building,” Harris added. “I’d like to see an ZIONSVILLE MONTHLY

orthodontist, chiropractor or some medical-related tenant take up the other 5,000 square feet in that building.” When asked about the retail component of the project and how much interest Harris is getting from local area businesses, Harris replied, “We’ve got commitments for 50% of our 24,000-square-foot retail building. I’ve got to have 70% committed before we kick that off, and we’re getting closer to that percentage. I’m optimistic that we’ll be starting construction on that [retail building] in the spring also.”
Designed to Best Represent the Area and Provide What Residents Need Harris emphasized that the forthcoming development will not look like traditional “strip centers” but will boast a theme that represents the area’s proud equestrian heritage and community. “We’re going with a style that is similar to what you would see in Lexington, Kentucky, and around Keeneland,” Harris explained. “There are designated drive-thru areas in the plan, which have proven critical to many businesses in this pandemic. For instance, we will be bringing in a dry cleaner who will have one of those drive-thru window spaces.” As far as restaurants go, Harris is in talks with an area restaurateur who is in the process of deciding if they will be bringing a higher-end steak or BBQ concept to the project. We will be sure to announce the final verdict and the owners once that piece of the project has been finalized. “We are also looking at bringing in a specialty butcher/European market type of shop as well,” Harris said. “We have room for a grocery store and have been pinging Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Fresh Thyme, and though they’re starting to pay a little more attention to us, we’re not currently in any negotiations with any of them.”
It’s a Gas Station … Not a Truck Stop The development has been cleared to bring in a filling station at the main entrance of Appaloosa Crossing. To squelch some of the rumors about this station, it is zoned and approved for a regular vehicle and truck fueling station and will not

be, as Harris put it, “an eat-here-and-get-gas type of situation.” “Unfortunately, Tesla hasn’t saturated the market, so we still need fossil fuels,” Harris quipped. “We’re working on that project with a local British Petroleum group. The gas station will have immediate access right off of U.S. 421 but will also be accessible from an interior road that will run the entire back side of the out lots and leads out to 146th Street.” Harris concluded, “Appaloosa Crossing will have everything that everybody needs out there. You’ll have a place that you can easily drive to and hopefully get everything you need. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish out there.”

A little more than a year ago, I produced an in-depth segment on the passing of SB 516 and the local hemp and CBD industries. With the passing of the 2018 Farm Act, in addition to SB 516, a new industry was reborn after removing hemp from the federal Controlled Substances Act.
A
fter learning that local residents Perry Holder, his daughter, Elizabeth, and their business partner, Alonzo Calloway, have a licensed hemp farm in Zionsville, along U.S. 421, I was compelled to learn more about their operation and enlighten my readers about the advancements in an industry that was prohibited under the Controlled Substances Act in 1971 but has since been overruled by the 2018 Farm Act.
Indy Hemp Company/4:21 Hemp Company The Holders and Calloway have been developing their brands, Indy Hemp Company and 4:21 Hemp Company, while growing hemp at their grow location—the first hemp farm in Boone County since the passing of the 2018 Farm Act. After retiring early from Allison Transmission at age 52, Perry shared that he started a landscape company here in Zionsville. After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, going through surgery and the necessary treatments, Perry decided that he wanted to give his landscaping company another go. “Through my landscaping company and my church [St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church], I met Alonzo. He and I have had health issues and had tried CBD, so while we were running Zionsville Land-
scaping, we were working on this [grow] property, and Alonzo built our Indy Hemp line and is also building our 4:21 line.” Perry’s daughter, Elizabeth, has joined the team after experiencing the benefits of CBD as a sufferer of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). “I have a lot of symptoms that go with PCOS, and those symptoms have gotten better from CBD and through exercising and eating right,” Elizabeth shared. “I just want to help people and want them to know that

they’re not alone and CBD can actually help. It’s pure and not like opioids or anything like that. It’s helped me get healthier, and that’s why I wanted to get involved with Indy Hemp and 4:21 companies.” Alonzo shared, “After 2018, it changed everything on a federal level, and Indiana started a pilot program for growing hemp. We decided it was time to get into [the industry] and build the Indy Hemp Company, and as Perry said, we are now building the 4:21 Hemp Company as well. Everything is coming out of the property here, so it’s grown here, and then it’s extracted at NXT Labs in Westfield, and we work with its owners, Toby and Wesley ‘Wes’ Holcomb. It’s been three years since we started this, and our brands are starting to get a lot of exposure. This year, we’re Purdue [University Hemp Project] compliant, so things have been going really good.” As they continue to grow, both in a literal and figurative sense, Alonzo shared that they will look to work with some other Indiana hemp farmers and/or look at commercial space for an indoor growing facility to expand the Indy Hemp Company, but the harvested crop that makes the 4:21 Hemp Company CBD products will always be grown from its single-acre grow site in Zionsville, which they plan to expand next planting season.
Extracting the Biomass to Make Pure CBD Oil The Holders and Calloway emphasized that having a strong partner in the extraction process is critical to not only the end-product results but also to the overall success of their businesses. The trio has found such a partnership with the Holcombs, who own and operate NXT Labs.

get the purest form of oil that you can get with our extraction equipment.” Toby shared that for smaller growers like Indy Hemp/4:21 Hemp companies, they can turn their product around in about three days. For larger growers, it can be two to three weeks, and if they create a finished white-label product [CBD tinctures and oils] for the growers, it can take up to a month for the product to be turned around.
Growing Forward “Once we have dried the hemp and shucked the hemp [removing leaves and flowers from the stems], we take the biomass [from the shucked hemp] to NXT, a USDA-certified lab,” Alonzo said. “We pay them for the extraction and for doing our formulation, filling our bottles and so on and so forth. From there, we market and sell our products to the consumer.” Toby Holcomb added, “Wes and I started researching the extraction business in 2017, and we actually started in the Boulder, Colorado area. We decided to build our facility in Westfield once we were confident that the 2018 Farm Act was going to be passed.” What makes NXT Labs different and able to produce a higher-quality product than other labs is all in their extraction process. “We’re a [USDA-certified] CO2 extraction lab,” Wes explained. “No harsh solvents ever touch the material. It’s a closed-loop system, low pressure and selective targeting CO2 extraction, meaning that we actually target the cannabinoids and terpenes, and we have consumer-ready oil right out of our machine. We
Looking ahead at the next growing season, which typically begins in early May, Perry shared that the group has plans to incorporate an on-site market with flowers and vegetables with the assistance of Perry’s wife, Priscilla, and friends. Their goal is to sell honey, flowers, vegetables and 4:21 Hemp Company products from the farm while expanding the Indy Hemp Company footprint more statewide. “Indiana’s really come a long way within these last two years of growing,” Alonzo said. “This upcoming year, we want to start the market and use the mint, lavender and other things grown here at the farm in our products. That’s a big thing with Indy Hemp and 4:21—we’re definitely in control, from seed to shelf, of our products.” In addition to the market, the trio plans on hosting their Indy Hemp Fest again, in hopes that the pandemic will be under control and restrictions will have eased up. “We also give tours, so as soon as the growth season is in full effect next year, we welcome anyone who’s interested

spoke with ZMS seventh-grade language arts teacher Blake Mellencamp about the genesis of the Winter Fling and how the community can support the students’ work. “Every year we traditionally hold a ‘Spring Fling’ event,” Mellencamp shared. “It’s a big art show where all of our music groups play; we have a ‘film festival,’ and it’s a chance for all the kids to show off their creativity. Last spring, the schools went all remote, and we couldn’t have our standard Spring Fling event, so it was [ZMS athletic director] Kelly Antcliff’s wonderful idea to have a virtual Spring Fling. It was also her idea to have a Winter Fling this year.” Mellencamp explained that he and Antcliff wanted to showcase all of the hard work and creative things the students have been doing, both in and out of the classroom, and they didn’t want to wait until
the end of this school year to do that. “The virtual showcase is wonderful because it allows pages and pages of music recordings, art and wonderful creativity to be showcased and viewed by the students and staff as well as relatives and friends who may live out of state,” Mellencamp said. “So, we’ve decided that even when we can resume in-person events, we’re going to keep doing these [flings] virtually because it’s a great place—online—where we can showcase all of this great work to the public.”
Virtual Technology Becomes Another Tool in the Toolbox As most industries have adapted and integrated virtual meetings and other online technologies as part of their pandemic protocols, the education sector has seen this as an opportunity to reach students where they are and will utilize these technologies even post-pandemic. “Of course, it has been challenging,” Mellencamp stated. “But I think with all challenges, you learn a lot and improve what you’re doing. For instance, I’ve been producing video lessons for the remote-learners, and going forward, when there is an instance when a student is too sick to come to school but not too sick to catch up on their work, they will be able to watch the lesson—virtually—and get these resources in very innovative ways. we’ve been forced to use them in ways that will be relevant not just during the pandemic, but I think they will help educators moving forward.”
Submissions Due by Dec. 11 ZMS students will need to submit their work by Friday, Dec. 11, 2020. The unveiling of the inaugural Virtual Winter Fling 2020 will be on Wednesday, Dec. 16, just two days before the schools break for winter break. It will be a perfect time for family and friends to view the galleries posted via Flipgrid on the school’s website and social media channels. “The kids are working so hard and making such amazing things, and it would be a tragedy if their projects were only seen by me or the teacher at the front of the room,” Mellencamp expressed. “We have to broadcast this and shout it from the rooftops. Everybody should see this awesome stuff, and the kids should be affirmed and not just by the teachers but by their community. I think this [event] is part of building that sense of community that, right now, can seem distant but is definitely still there.” So, ZMS students, be sure to submit your work to the inaugural Virtual Winter Fling!
