Will Modglin: Meet America’s No. 1 Ranked College Swimming Recruit Zionsville Community High School junior Will Modglin was recently ranked in an article published by SWIMSWAM.com as its No. 1 “On Our Way Too Early” list of top 20 recruits from the high school class of 2023. Modglin currently owns the top 100 back and 200 IM times and was named to the 2021–22 U.S. National Junior Team. Modglin recently committed to swim for and attend the University of Texas in 2023–24. The Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre proudly presents a return to in-person shows this holiday season. I spoke with some of the cast members from both shows on what it means to return to the stage and live audiences as well as why they chose to work with the Civic’s remarkable staff. TWO HOLIDAY CLASSICS: “A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS” AND “ELF THE MUSICAL”

he classic animated television special “A Charlie Brown Christmas” comes to life in this faithful stage adaptation in which Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts Gang discover the true meaning of Christmas. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was first shown as an animated television special in 1965 and has been part of the holiday tradition ever since. The stage adaptation was completed in 2013. “A Charlie Brown

Christmas” is running Nov. 26–Dec. 18. Based on the cherished 2003 New Line Cinema hit, “Elf the Musical” features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (“Disney’s Aladdin” on Broadway, “The Wedding Singer”), with a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (“Annie,” “The Producers,” “Hairspray”) and Bob Martin (“The Drowsy Chaperone”). Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor

“Santa” - Parrish Williams: It is so important to have that communal sense of togetherness. This show [“Elf”] is definitely joyful, and the reason why I chose to reprise the role [from 2019] is that very fact. It’s going to bring a lot of joy and happiness to a lot of people. “Jovie” - Emily Bohannon: I would love for people to come and celebrate the return of live theater with us. “Elf” is crazy and wacky, but it’s a really important message that features a blended family and people coming together despite their differences and receiving and giving love. “Macy’s Manager” - Jonathan Studdard: Theater is a good escape from everyday life and things that stress us out. I think connecting to people is huge right now, and it’s exciting to be back to live theater. We hope that we bring smiles to people’s faces and make them feel warm. “Buddy” - Matt Bays: The show and the joy that it brings to people is one of the reasons why I chose to work with Civic. The people who are grinches and scrooges are just s*** out of luck because it is kind of impossible to leave this show and not be happy. The prep and the dedication to excellence at the Civic allows us to do our jobs at a higher level, and their expectations are high for community theater and I love that!

“Lucy” - Mikayla Koharchik: This is the third time I’ve played “Lucy.” I love Lucy— she’s just so over-the-top and obnoxious, and I get to let loose and be like a little kid. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is that quintessential Christmas show that every generation loves. I cannot wait for my kids and others to see live theater again. “Snoopy” - Evan Wallace: I would imagine that this show will be a lot of kids’ first time either interacting with this show or getting to experience live shows. What better place than the theater to come together with our families and our communities? It’s time for people to come back home [to the Civic].

“Frieda” - Alex Warfield: I was very excited when I got the message to come and join the cast. This show hits close to home for a lot of people. It has a really great message about not focusing so much on the gift giving and decorations but on spending time with your family and making sure that the focus stays on the birth of Jesus Christ. “Charlie Brown” - Max McCreary: What we noticed as a team in our first read through was how “adult” some of these conversations these kids have are. The speak like kids pretending to be adults, so there’s this sense of purity of youth and in

how children see adults. In that moment when the tree comes out, we see the effort his classmates and the people in his life put into that moment to try something different and to give him, Charlie Brown, the benefit of the doubt, if only for that one time. The longstanding tradition of the “Carol of Homes” Holiday Home Tour presented by Zionsville Show Choirs (ZSI) is back to its original in-person program! The tour features six beautifully decorated homes in Zionsville and talented members of ZSI under the direction of co-directors Sam Chenoweth and Deana Broge. It is a wonderful tradition as well as being the show choirs’ largest semester fundraiser.

his annual fundraiser is critical to ZSI’s 2022 programs and to ensuring the continuation of said programs. And while ZSI was able to present a virtual home tour in 2020, the results and impact were just not the same as an in-person tour and performances. The Holiday Home Tour is also a vital component to Zionsville’s holiday traditions that are cherished by the ZSI performers as well as the event’s hosts and community at large.

she and her fellow performers feel about the return to in-person performances at this year’s event. “I’m really excited to be back in the houses because it is fun to see the community come together for the holidays and celebrate in a unique way that not all other communities celebrate,” Champa said. “I think everybody is really excited about doing this and about getting together, deciding what song we are going to do and how we’re going to make it our own by adding our own little parts. This year, we’ve picked a really fun piece that’s a little different from what we normally do. Broge added, “We have been in the throes of the holidays since the first week of October preparing, so we are ready for the holidays. We will have singers down on the brick street to help start Christmas in the Village, and the rest of our performers will be in the six host homes throughout the day [Dec. 4].” Chenoweth and Broge expressed their gratitude to all the event sponsors, home tour hosts and the ZSI fundraising chairs Catherine Casaciani and Ann Soards and their committee. She also thanked the community for its unwavering support. “The community has been so supportive of Zionsville Show Choirs,” Broge stated. “We’ve not really had to ask for people to volunteer [as a home tour host] for many years. They reach out and say that they would love to host and open up their homes to us for the Holiday Home Tour.”

BORN TO BE A CHAMPION SWIMMER It became apparent to Modglin’s parents that he was born to swim almost immediately upon his birth. The youngest of three swimming boys, and son of parents who also swam, Modglin was practically raised in and around a pool. Chris and Michele met at the IU Natatorium during lifeguard drills in 1989. Both

coached summer swim teams at Highland Golf & Country Club and loved coaching. “We spent the summers at Highland. When our oldest, Sanders, was on the [summer] team, we would watch him swim and spend all day at the pool,” Michele shared. “Summer swimming is just fun, and it was fun for the boys and was a way we could all be together as a family.” Chris added, “There’s a lot of history with the Highland swim team. It’s really where it all began for all three of our boys. They all started at age 4 on that swim team.” The Modglins shared that once a very young Will Modglin had to be bribed

with a Hershey candy bar to get into the pool at first. Michele added, “It may have happened one other time, but then Will was good to go from there. At 2 ½, he had his tonsils and adenoids taken out, and I remember the ENT specialist said, ‘I’ve never seen a 2 ½ year old cut the way he’s cut!’” “He was born with a small waist and wide shoulders,” Chris said. “He had been born literally one minute and the OBGYN exclaimed, ‘Look at the abs on this kid!’” Michele added, “Chris, you called it then—you looked at [Will] and said, ‘A 200 backstroker!’”

According to Modglin’s parents, he joined the Zionsville Swim Club (ZSC) at age 7. This feeder club is renowned for developing quality athletes, and the Modglins attribute the coaching, his teammates and the experiences at ZSC as part of Modglin’s success as a student-athlete. They share the same sentiments on the ZCHS boys swim team and coaches as well. “Will did not get here alone,” Chris emphasized. “Will’s teammates push him as well as sometimes pull him. They have

all lifted each other to the points that they are at and will continue to do so. We love all those boys—they are all our swimming sons.” When asked at what point in his early youth did Modglin realize his passion for swimming, he replied, “I would say it was when I was going into high school. Up until then, I was also playing rec soccer. I knew that if I wanted to achieve my [swimming] goals, I’d have to be all in on one sport.” Modglin added, “The coaches that I had when I was younger were some of the

best coaches that I’ve had. And I think having my brothers [Coleman and Sanders] involved in swimming too helped me connect with the coaches. Being able to practice with Coleman was very helpful in bringing me in [to the program] and with making me feel like I belonged.” As Modglin continued to develop his skills in the pool, he has continued to develop his discipline out of the water as well. “This kid [Will] has his goal times posted above his bed,” Michele shared. “When he’s got free time, he watches videos of either himself or the best-of-the-best swimmers. He’s a student of the sport.”

Modglin continued, “I knew that I was going to use this as a learning experience. I had some goals that were not really met at that meet, but it was a great learning curve and I have that experience now for the 2024 [Olympic] trials, which will be so helpful. I ended up missing [that opportunity] by .6 [seconds], and it was hard to miss it, but it was just one of those things where it wasn’t my time—yet.”

ONWARD AND UPWARD

“This meet was one of the most stressful meets I’ve ever been at by far,” Modglin admitted. “Being in Wave II and having two different waves was different for me, and usually at these big meets, I know someone on my team. And not having my brother [Coleman] there was hard. It was weird in that sense, and I felt kind of alone.”

While his focus is on finishing his high school career at ZCHS, Modglin is excited for his future, which is off to an excellent start. He has verbally committed to the University of Texas, which has a robust and storied swimming program. When asked why he decided to commit to the Longhorns, Modglin replied, “There are many factors that went into that decision. When I visited [the campus], I realized why they are THAT good, and it was one of those things where I felt at home with the team. I bonded with

everybody super well. I’ve raced against many of these people and have known a couple of them since I was 13–14. I feel like I can achieve my goals in and out of the water there.” And when questioned about his immediate goals until his high school graduation, Modglin stated, “My goals—out of the water—are to get good grades and graduate.” And with that, Modglin’s parents smiled and concurred.

USA SWIMMING SCHOLASTIC ALL-AMERICAN STATS • Won both the 200 IM (1:45.14) and 100 back (46.60) last year as a ZCHS sophomore at the 2021 Indiana High School Boys Swimming and Diving Championships. • Led off the runner-up 200 medley relay (21.44, the fastest backstroke by over half a second) and contributed a leg (43.59) to the runner-up 400 free relay.

Blasucci: When we got on stage to record the promotional video, from the first note that we played there was an [energy] on that stage and everyone was kind of taken aback. We realized that what we are doing is amazing and that the musicians assembled for this group have a chemistry, a magic and energy and love that that will flow from the stage. JM: What is it about the Palladium that is bringing you back to perform again?

Blasucci: It is a bucket-list performing arts center. I love how it’s personalized and how people can be seated behind us and really become a part of the stage and, by extension, a part of the performance.

ET A popular annual tradition at the Center, saxophonist and bandleader Dave Koz’s holiday concerts feature stellar special guests performing fresh, lively arrangements of seasonal favorites in a high-energy show for the entire family. This year’s tour features Jonathan Butler, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun and Rebecca Jade. In a career spanning three decades, Koz has earned nine Grammy nominations and sent nine albums to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. An entrepreneur and restaurateur, he also hosts two radio programs: the syndicated “The Dave Koz Radio Show,” on the air over 20 years, and “The Dave Koz Lounge” on SiriusXM.

JM: Dave, it’s great to have you heading back to Carmel—in person!

Dave Koz: It’s been a number of years in a row that we’ve come to Carmel, and it really is one of our favorite stops. JM: Last year, you shared with me the genesis and stories behind your album “A New Day” and how it helped carry you and the contributing musicians through 2020. Please remind my readers and your fans how special that collection of work is, as well as your latest groove-intensive album “The Golden Hour.”

Koz: When everything was starting to shut down in the back half of March [2020], and once the shock wore off a little bit, I was like, well, what am I going to do with this time? I intuitively started to listen to music that made me feel better, and so it was my feel-good musical heroes that inspired me to get off my couch and make some music. “A New Day” was a two-month project from start to finish, which is very short, typically, for me when making albums. The project was really about corralling all this pent-up energy from the musicians that collaborated with me and banding together to create something really special. I’m really proud of that album, and it’s unlike any album I’ve ever made and hope to never have to make another album like that. I made a left turn and made an album called “The Golden Hour,” which was released in June of this year but was made in September of 2020. It was done in-person over three days with live musicians in the studio again. I’ve never made an album quite like that ever before either, so [these two albums] are interesting bookends to my COVID experience.

JM: Fifty years is a wonderful lineage! I know you joined the group in 2012. Tell me a little bit about how you came to be a member of the King’s Singers.

Christopher Bruerton: I think there’s an element of luck because it kind of depends on when the person decides they want to leave. For example, if I reflect on my own journey, I grew up in New Zealand and decided that if I didn’t give it [a professional music career] a go, I would wonder, “What if?” So, I booked a one-way ticket in 2010 to England. It just so happens that my first year of singing in [England], the first baritone Phillip Lawson decided to call it a day after 18 years, and it so happens that it was all about my timing and being around for people to hear me sing. I was the first non-English-born member of the group, but my mother was from England, so I have a British passport, which is very handy. JM: How have you pulled yourself

through 2020, and how has it affected the group now that you’re back out there touring?

Bruerton: We certainly reflect on [2020] all the time because we somehow managed to get through it, and again, there was a little bit of luck involved. I also think one of the big questions we asked ourselves early on was, “With people dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, how do you achieve post-traumatic growth on the flip side?” There are different options available to you, and some are less palatable than others, but ultimately, you have to choose to come out of things finding silver linings and finding areas of development. We found ways to grow and to remain relevant in the public eye. We also felt a responsibility as leaders in the a cappella world to encourage others who were even less fortunate than us. We found ways to engage with our fans, and in many ways social media was our

only outlet. We tried to collaborate with as many people as we could and found new ways to engage with people online. We decided not to feel sorry for ourselves but to be kind to one another—looking out for each other’s mental health and well-being. I think the message is for us to also look out for those who aren’t as fortunate, and that has really brought the world together because there’s this enormous sense of commonality. We’ve all had to endure [the pandemic] and find ways to keep our head above water or thrive a bit if we can. Throughout history, people have always found that music can be a healing bond. I think we’ve got this opportunity to remind ourselves how much we’ve missed each other and that when you listen to music, it really can put things into perspective. From the artist’s point of view, being on stage, and from the audience’s point of view—hearing live music and letting it wash over you and get to your core—there’s nothing quite like it.

Imagine a traditional, intimate pub setting that is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and serves made-from-scratch pub fare along with a pint of the pub’s house beer and Ireland’s oldest red ale-style beer—Smithwick’s.

ou don’t have to travel out of state or country to enjoy such an establishment—The Pub at Anson is open for business and is living up to expectations.

REINTRODUCING A FEW FAMILIAR FACES I sat down with The Pub’s general manager, Leah Morris, to talk about the concept and what folks can expect when they experience the local public house. Morris may be familiar to many locals who have frequented other local establishments such as L.A. Café in Whitestown. The Pub’s owner, Marcus White, met Morris at one of the local establishments where she worked as a server/bartender part-time while also working a full-time “day job.” When White decided that he was going to build out the available space in which his business now operates,

he offered Morris her “dream job”—to run The Pub at Anson as its general manager. Morris happily accepted and brought over other former colleagues to help establish a solid and professional staff at The Pub, including Chef Debbie Prall, who many may recognize from the former Carolina Grill in Stonegate, The Loft at Traders Point and Brockway Pub in Carmel.

Construction on the buildout began mid-summer 2021, and while the grand opening was limited to social media announcements and word-of-mouth to ensure a smooth opening process, the word is definitely out that The Pub at Anson is quickly becoming the local “hang out” for adults over 21 who are looking for great food and spirits in a laid-back and comfortable environment. No pub is complete without a well-stocked bar that boasts local spirits and breweries as well top-shelf selections. “I’ve learned so much from this experience already,” Morris shared. “And developing relationships with the liquor reps is huge in order to make sure that I have liquor allocated for us. Our house line of vodka is from Alchemy Spirit House. I love their story and like the owner, Mark [Nigbur], a lot. At some point, he wants to come in and show us how to make some of his signature drinks using his spirits.” The Pub also features craft beer selections from Metazoa Brewing Company, Four Day Ray Brewing and Three Floyds Brewing.

Inspired by White’s international travels while serving in the military, The Pub at Anson offers a variety of “comfort food” options and lighter fare that includes soups and salads, all made from scratch. If you’re mourning the loss of MacNiven’s scotch eggs since its closure in 2020, mourn no more! The Pub’s scotch eggs are outstanding, and the poutine is worth every calorie that is consumed. The thin, hand-pattied Angus burgers are seasoned to perfection, and the Nashville Hot! Crispy buttermilk fried chicken is worth writing home about, but be forewarned—it’s got some KICK! The Italian Beef brings a little bit of the Windy City (Chicago) to Boone County. It is one of my personal favorites on The Pub’s menu, and Morris told me it is a recipe that White brought back from Italy. There are designated daily specials that feature dishes such as fish and chips on Fridays. Morris added, “I’d say 96% of the menu is all [Marcus], and chef [Prall]

has done an amazing job in bringing it all together and making it happen. After we get more established, in a cost-effective way, we can go back and review the menu and sub in some of the local vendors, like St. Adrian’s and other locals, that we can add to things like our charcuterie.

TELL YOUR BOSS YOU HAVE A “CONFERENCE” AND HEAD OVER TO THE PUB The Pub has several flat-screen TVs to enjoy a ball game or soccer match with a few pints and plates with your best pals and neighbors. It’s the perfect place to wind down after a long day or to meet up with friends and guests from out of town. The Humane Society for Boone County was positioned well to deal with the pandemic when it hit Indiana in 2020. Our pets were already in foster homes and we already used social media, our website and other online adoption avenues to find homes for our pets. Although those are still the main stays of our organization, in 2021 we were able to start “Open Business Hours” every other weekend and we were able to resume Outreach adoption events at several locations throughout Boone County. Our community outreach programs (Pet Pantry, Spay/Neuter assistance, Trap-Neuter-Release) continued to grow through 2021. We work with other organizations within Boone County to help identify people and pets in need. We provided 28,319 pounds of pet food and supplies through our Pet Pantry. 167 cats and dogs were spayed or neutered with SNAP certificates and through our TNR program. Our goal is to help keep pets in the homes where they are loved and cherished as well as to help decrease the homeless pet population through spay/neutering services. As the Boone County population continues to grow, so does the need for more services for homeless, lost and unwanted pets. Each year the number of pets that we help increases. This year will be another record year as we anticipate helping over 500 dogs and cats before the New Year. As of the end of October we have provided care for 474 pets (285 kittens/cats, 189 puppies/dogs). We have adopted out 363 pets, returned to owner 29, and transferred to other welfare organizations 16 pets. We have had to make the heartbreaking end of life decision for three pets to prevent suffering due to terminal illnesses. We could not achieve all of our success without your support. Kitties and puppies needing emergency care couldn’t be helped without your support. We deeply appreciate every donation whether it is supplies, monetary or time given as a volunteer or providing a foster home. Over 98% of the hands-on care of the dogs and cats is provided by our dedicated volunteers and foster families. Our volunteers are invaluable in our Outreach programs, fundraising, and our day-to-day business. We are always in need of helping hands so that we can expand our programs. As the weather turns cold there will be a need for outdoor shelters for community cats. We will also receive increased calls about animals that are in need due to homelessness or inadequate shelter/care.
