Have you heard the good news? ZEF Bash 2021 is coming back and is returning to its traditional in-person program! But before we get into what’s new this year and why you can’t miss this year’s fundraiser for the Zionsville Education Foundation (ZEF), let’s take a moment to recognize how hard the ZEF Bash chairs and committee worked at raising some coin last year—amid a global pandemic where we all lived in a virtual existence for the better part of a year.

EF Executive Director Lyle Browne reported, “Thanks to the generosity of our community and a hard-working committee, last year’s Trivia Night raised $88,000. The winning trivia team was League of Extraordinary Guessers—led by Mike and Tracy Coussens with Ike and Jennie Means, Mary Ann Morris, Tracy and Brian Vermillion and Christina Gibson.”

IN CASE YOU’RE WONDERING WHAT ZEF IS… The mission of the Zionsville Education Foundation (ZEF) is to serve the school community by providing funds that

promote academic excellence. The vision is to partner with the school community to instill in students a lifelong desire for knowledge. Over the last 25 years, ZEF has awarded $1.5 million in grants to educators and students in Zionsville Community Schools (ZCS). In 2020, ZEF awarded more than $127,000 in grants to ZCS. The generosity of ZEF’s donors benefited more than 7,600 students and 465 teachers through grant funding from ZEF. ZCS is the lowest-funded public school district per student in the state of Indiana. ZEF funds innovative classroom projects,

The co-chairs of the 2021 ZEF Bash are Zionsville residents Audra Poe and Sarah King. And like Browne, the entire ZEF Bash committee is thrilled to have everyone back together at the Cardinal Room at the Golf Club of Indiana on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021. The ZEF Bash (formerly known as ZEF Barn Bash) will kick off its festivities at 5:30 p.m. with a VIP Reception, followed by the doors opening to the general public at 6:30 p.m. The attire is casual but there is a theme! “Show Your School Spirit” is this year’s overarching theme. It’s time to show your school spirit! Therefore, full-body eagle costumes are not frowned upon by the establishment—go big or stay home! “We are so excited to bring people back together—in person—again,” Browne expressed. “We will spend some time celebrating all the amazing things that our schools do on a daily basis and what they were able to do during some really tough times. The VIP Reception will have some special musical entertainment, and the event will begin in full force at 6:30 p.m., where everybody will enjoy dinner and reconnect with friends that they may not have seen in a long time. We’ll have the band Dave and Rae as the main entertainment for that portion of the evening. We’re going to have dancing, a silent auction and a gift card pull. RETURNING TO THE ROAD WITH A SOLO PIANO TOUR, BEN FOLDS HAS CREATED AN ENORMOUS BODY OF GENRE-BENDING MUSIC THAT INCLUDES POP ALBUMS WITH BEN FOLDS FIVE (“BRICK,” “ARMY,” “BATTLE OF WHO COULD CARE LESS”), ALONG WITH MULTIPLE SOLO ALBUMS AND MANY COLLABORATIVE RECORDS. Janelle Morrison: I read that one of your earliest memories takes you back to the age of 2, listening to your parents’ 45s— specifically, Little Richard. I was curious if that was the spark that ignited your passion for songwriting and performing?

Ben Folds: I think it definitely had a big impact. I think that anyone who listens to Little Richard understands that there is something unbound about his singing, music and playing. It’s just so out of bounds. If you think about him singing “The Girl Can’t’ Help It” or “Tutti Frutti” and think about his voice—nobody sings like that. And it gave me the idea that your only bounds are things you can’t physically do, and sometimes, that’s not even a thing. I remember reading that John Lennon—he loved these blues artists so much—and he would scream until he had no voice. I think there’s something to that, and we should all be exposed to music that’s sort of just beyond, you know?

His last album was a blend of pop songs with his “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra” that soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s classical and classical crossover charts. Folds has performed with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras and currently serves as the first-ever artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. JM: Absolutely. Speaking of boundaries, as we look back at 2020 when the entire world was shut down, when people were unable to perform, tour and gather, I saw a major decline of humanity and am curious, where you were in your headspace during that time? What were some of your thoughts as they pertain to artistic creativity and what you were planning to do once the world opened back up?

Folds: I was very pessimistic about when it would open up again. Everyone had their best guesses when that would be. I mean, we cancelled our stuff super early. Folds continued [laughing]: I figured that when we finally got back out there,

we could just pretty much play a pair of spoons and do a jig on the stage and leave, and everybody would be like “YEAH!” We were just going to be so happy to get together that the bar would be lower. JM: Obviously, your fans are familiar with your work with Ben Folds Five and your solo work over the years, but I wanted to ask about The Bens Rock Over Australia tour [2003]. How did that all come about?

Folds: That was a time where I was taking on crazy schizophrenic amounts of projects and work. I did a soundtrack for a movie, “Over the Hedge,” that year, I produced a William Shatner record, I did The Bens, I started a studio, I made three EPs, a live album and an orchestral album with all-new charts. It was just an insane breakneck period of me being productive. The Bens came about because all our fans—the three Bens in that group—had all sort of jokingly said we needed to play a tour. So, a tour was booked. Ben Lee called me and said, “Hey, this is a good opportunity to make a little tour EP—that’s my new trick.” And I said, “Well, that’s my new trick too, so let’s do that.” I had the studio that I was putting together. so we went straight to the studio and just s*** out tunes in like three days.” Folds continued [laughing]: The only one of us that had a cell phone was Ben Kweller. Ben Lee and I hadn’t even discovered the cell phone yet. I remember Ben Lee and I started one song, “Just Pretend.” Each of us had written a verse and were like if [Kweller] ever gets off his f****** phone, we’ll finish this song.”

JM: Since you mentioned collaborating with him, what are your thoughts on William Shatner’s trip to space?

Folds: If I didn’t know Bill really well, I might have written it off as a bunch of rich boys playing with some expensive toys in space when you could make like 10,000 hospitals in Africa for that amount of money, but at the same time, we can look back at space exploration and see where it directly led to innovations which have actually saved lives on Earth. So, there’s a good argument for progress. So, it is my mind to go there first. I was super nervous because Bill’s no spring chicken, and I can’t even get on the f****** tilt-a-whirl at the county fair, and he’s going up into SPACE! I held my breath for the whole 11 mintues or whatever, and I’m waiting for him to come down and tell us that his vital signs are good! Then, they just let him step out of that beer can, with no doctor there, and I’m having a lot of feelings. I was really proud of him. He’s the oldest man to go into space and was the symbol of space exploration in the ’60s before we put a man on the moon. So, yeah, it was pretty cool. JM: I once heard you say that most of your composition is done in your head versus working it out on a piano, guitar, etc.

Carmel’s own internationally renowned Indiana Ballet Conservatory (IBC) is presenting its beloved annual tradition, “The Nutcracker,” and is again performing on the stage of the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. The majestic hall creates a breathtaking and “palatial” ambiance that sets the perfect scenery for both the audience and performers.

A Brief Overview of IBC IBC was founded in 2010 by Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva-Randall. IBC’s mission as a preprofessional ballet school is to be committed to providing the best classical ballet training to its students and launching the next generation of dancers onto the world stage. IBC students continually place in top positions in national and international competitions and pursue professional careers in dance throughout the globe.

Featuring International and Local Talent IBC is honored to be collaborating with local talent as well as guest artist Sebastian Vinet. Born in Santiago de Chile, Vinet began ballet training at Escuela de

Ballet del Teatro Muncipal de Santiago. After two years under full scholarship, he moved to Houston, Texas, to finish his training at Ben Stevenson Houston Ballet Academy. In 2009, he joined the Houston Ballet and in 2010, the San Francisco Ballet. He has been invited to dance at international ballet galas in several nations and was awarded an apprenticeship recipient at the 2009 Prix de Lausanne. Vinet also was a recipient of the Premio Jovenes Líderes del diario El Mercurio (2009)—an award to Chilean artists, presented by the ambassador of Chile in the United States. In 2017, Vinet was the artistic director and creator of the first international ballet gala to be presented at the emblematic theater in Chile Teatro Oriente. Most recently, Vinet was honored to be a 2020 Prix de Lausanne competition jurist in Switzerland, being the youngest person in the history of the prestigious competition to be invited to join the panel of judges. IBC is collaborating again with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC) and its artistic director Joshua Pedde. For those that missed the 2019 production of IBC’s “The Nutcracker” that featured children from ICC—you are in for an unforgettable experience! and Aurora Ausserer (16) from Carmel, Indiana, who hold this distinguished honor this year. Yakovleva-Randall shared that Ausserer’s family is originally from Seattle, Washington, and her entire family uprooted and moved to Carmel so that Ausserer can train with IBC.

Performing at the Palladium in Carmel, Indiana Staged by Yakovleva-Randall and based on the 1934 choreography of Vasily Vainonen, IBC is proud to present “The Nutcracker” in front of a live and, hopefully, FULL audience. Yakovleva-Randall shared what it means to her, along with the IBC staff and

students, to perform on such a remarkable stage and luxurious concert hall. “I personally love the Palladium, and my staff and students are all excited to perform at the Palladium,” Yakovleva-Randall expressed. “This is why we are thinking outside of the box as much as possible to work with this stage. We have to adjust the choreography because it is not a ‘ballet’ stage, but we enjoy the experience, and we like working with the [the Center’s] staff a lot.” Where IBC cannot create traditional special effects such as snow, it is working with the Center’s stage crew and its lighting technology to emulate falling snow. “We have to be creative because we cannot have the traditional sets that we used

in the Toby Theater,” Yakovleva-Randall said. “We are working with Ian Marshall who is building our periaktoi [ancient Greek theatrical device that features revolving scenes].” Children and adults of all ages will be transformed by this heartwarming tale of a young girl and her beloved Nutcracker as she battles evil and learns the value and resiliency of the human spirit. As previously reported by Zionsville Monthly, the Kite Harris Property Group is making progress on its latest mixed-use development—Appaloosa Crossing— located at the southeast corner of County Road 300 South and U.S. 421 (aka 146th Street and North Michigan Road).

A RECAP OF THE PROJECT

he 55 acres of former rural field now exhibit the development’s infrastructure and the first retail building (23,100 square feet) that is under construction. Appaloosa Crossing will soon offer a total of 264,000 square feet of retail and office space, restaurants and a gas station. Plans for a residential townhome component (units for sale, not for lease) of the development are currently under review and will be discussed during the town Plan Commission’s November meeting. The architectural details and equestrian themes throughout the development have been carefully curated by the development group, Kite Harris Property Group, and the landowners, Harris Family Limited Partnership.

We spoke with Zionsville resident and developer/property manager Bob Harris about the details of the project and the benefits it will bring area residents as well as existing and new businesses that have committed to relocating to Appaloosa Crossing in 2022. Harris provided an update on who has committed—signed agreements/leases—already this quarter.

WELCOME OUR NEW BUSINESSES TO APPALOOSA CROSSING Fans of Mexican cuisine are in for a treat—Verde, Flavors of Mexico has signed a lease with Harris. This will make the fourth “Verde” location for the family-owned business. “We are excited about Verde coming,” Harris expressed. “We also have a ma-andpa, upscale coffee shop/bakery coming. It will be located on the north end of

the building and will have a drive-thru window for convenience. The coffee shop/ bakery will provide a variety of products including gluten-free options that are amazing. We have signed a lease with Uncle Bill’s Pet Centers. They’re going to offer an equestrian section so people can buy horse feed and horse-related products along with the normal array of pet food, pet supplies and pets.” Harris mentioned that there is one more space available in this first retail building. And though he has had many offers to lease that space, he is holding out for a pizza operator.

“This space also has a pick-up window/ area and is just under 2,500 square feet,” Harris stated. “I’d love to have a specialty pizza place there in that location.” The building is separated by a drivethru area for the businesses with drivethru windows. “On the south end of the building, we will have a dry cleaner [Classic Cleaners] with a drop-off/pick-up window, and then the next space is projected to be a dental office. We are still working through that right now. Verde has 4,000 square feet on the south endcap of that building. There will be a lot of parking in the front and

additional parking in the back [of the retail building].”

TENTATIVE GRAND OPENINGS Just as folks have become accustomed to delays due to the pandemic, operators and property owners are becoming accustomed to delays brought on by the current supply chain issues that plague every industry. “We are looking at March of 2022 as the tentative month for the first grand openings,” Harris shared. “The building will be mostly completed by the end of 2021, but depending on how much buildout each

tenant will require, will depend on how soon they come online.” Harris shared that what used to be a two- to three-week lead time for HVAC units is now taking 14 weeks. “The supply chain issues have affected us to a point that we’re giving Verde extra time because of all the equipment they need to bring in and the interior design products from Mexico that they need,” Harris said. “The gas station is a local BP operator—his name is Paul Singh—and it’s under construction right now. It should come online early next year. And we’re really close on a purchase agreement with a large national bank. We are also working on closing with a national, high-end, full-service car wash that may take the out-lot just south of the gas station, right across from the main entrance on Michigan Road.” Stay tuned for more updates as more tenants sign on and plans for additional components of Appaloosa Crossing become finalized.

A Brief Synopsis

“I

nto the Woods” follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

A Few Inspiring Words From the Director ZCHS Choral & Musical Theater Director Sam Chenoweth spoke with me about what it means for the entire cast and crew to be performing in front of live and hopefully sold-out audiences again and how they are working through pandemic and construction restrictions. “The construction protocol limits our seating from the 1,200-plus to 999 [seats] per show,” Chenoweth stated. “That’s

because we lost the whole north side of the building, and so it will be limited for the next two years. But it’s much better than the 50% capacity that was previously in place.” When asked why he chose “Into the Woods” as this year’s musical, Chenoweth replied, “It’s a great way to bring people back in to celebrate the arts at the high school level. I feel like the first priority for any show is knowing your cliental, and I don’t feel that this show has that regularly at the high school

level. So, knowing that we have basically everything covered in terms of options for characters, we went into this knowing that we have a really strong cast from top to bottom. We have a cast and crew of 35 students with a variety of talents and skill sets. We have freshmen

through seniors with lots of different experiences represented.” Chenoweth continued, “We wanted to do something well-known, and we didn’t want to do another Disney show this soon after ‘Newsies.’ This [show] is a good contrast from the programming that

we’ve done the last couple of years. We haven’t really done anything since I came here that is more classical musical theater-based with limited choreography and is all about the vocal chops. This show is a good fit for what we have right now and is a good challenge for us.”

A Twist on the Original Broadway Presentation “There are lots and lots of lights, and while the music is the same, we’re costuming it a little bit more modernly—not the ‘period’ look that you’d expect to see in ‘Into the Woods,’” Chenoweth explained. “In terms of design choices, it will be reminiscent of what you know from Broadway or other productions. We’re still leaning into the projection [technology] and those effects in terms of set design. My goal has been to go minimal because there’s so much happening in the music that I want to let that speak for itself.”

All Together Again I asked Chenoweth how the students and staff are reacting to being together, rehearsing, again as a group and if this semblance of “normal” has been cathartic for all involved. “It’s been good to be able to have some things that are a little more normal in terms of full company numbers,” Chenoweth expressed. “It’s been fun to have them all in a room. They’ve built a mock set in the rehearsal room so they’re getting to feel what [the set] is going to be like and spend time with each other in large groups. Between the leads and the supporting characters, it’s

a larger-than-average cast, and they’ve been spending a lot of time together. They are eager and excited.” Chenoweth continued, “We started this whole process last spring when we auditioned before school was even out, and then I saw the leads twice over summer. We hit the ground running before the start of this school year, and I’m glad we started when we did. It’s been a good process and spaced out a little more, so that’s been less stressful in terms of daily commitments. But the broad sense of the production is certainly the biggest we’ve had.” I asked Chenoweth about the importance and mental impact it has on the cast and crew being able to perform in front of live, in-person audiences. “I think we are all guardedly optimistic,” Chenoweth stated. “Things are definitely getting better, but we’re all looking for when the next shoe’s going to drop. The kids are encouraged by the ticket sales and at the potential to sell these shows out. Performing for a fully sold-out PAC would be a major steppingstone towards getting back to ‘normal.’ The senior class especially has risen to the challenge, and they’ve done a good job stewarding the underclassmen through all of this.” Tickets to ZCHS’ presentation of “Into the Woods” show times are available at zionsvillepac.org.

Since the Zionsville Monthly team began producing and publishing in Zionsville nearly nine years ago, it has always been our standard to publish stories about issues that matter most to our community and inspiring and/or educational stories about people doing remarkable things that make our community strong and vibrant—especially residents who aren’t seeking publicity but who are genuinely trying to make a difference in the lives of others.

o, when a Zionsville reader contacted me about doing an article on Lisa Vorbroker, a Zionsville resident who is a well-known and highly respected head coach for both the Zionsville Youth Football League (ZYFL) and the Zionsville Lacrosse Club, I was delighted to speak with Vorbroker and share her passion for coaching and for our community with our readers.

A Talented Coach Who Happens to Also Be a Woman Vorbroker is a lifelong athlete and has lived in Zionsville for 30 years. She is a proud mother of six kids (four boys and two girls) and grandmother to five grandchildren. She played sports all throughout her youth and in high school (Kokomo) and played intramurals in college at Ball State University.

“I continued to play intramurals at Midwest Sports Complex,” Vorbroker shared. “I’ve continued to constantly play sports, and I live, eat, breathe and sleep sports. When my oldest son began going through the football program, Little League and all that stuff, I thought, OK, I love being around the kids, I love sports and coaching, so I’m going to sign up to coach, and I’ve literally been coaching every season, year-round, and I absolutely love it.” When asked what about coaching Vorbroker loves so much, she replied, “It’s just so much fun, and I love the strategy behind coaching. It’s fun to be with the kids, and if you do it right, and work with every kid, making sure they have a place on the team and find the one thing that would make every kid successful, it makes it so much fun for everybody. I try to work as many kids into [a play] as possible and get as many to touch the ball, and it ZIONSVILLE MONTHLY

makes the kids so confident and happy. It doesn’t matter what position they play as long as you find a position for every kid and teach them how to do it.” Vorbroker stressed that coaches not only teach the fundamentals of a sport, but they also teach important life skills. “We’re teaching them sportsmanship, camaraderie and teamwork,” Vorbroker said. “I have so much success with my teams, which is really fun for me because they get so much out of it. You remember bad coaches, but you really remember good coaches, and I always try to be that coach. I’m not in it for me. I’m in it for them. Don’t get me wrong—I’m extremely competitive, and I like to win. But at the end of the day, it’s all about the kids.” When I asked Vorbroker about her reputation for making some “impressive [football] plays that some male coaches wouldn’t know how to call,” she laughed and then humbly replied, “I do a lot of double reverses, fake reverses, double fake reverses and reverse quarterback passes and a bunch of crazy stuff. The boys love it, and it gets different guys involved, and they seem to really enjoy it. I enjoy that part of it. It’s a lot of fun.”

It’s More Than Winning ZYFL Super Bowls and Lacrosse Tournaments Vorbroker has a remarkable winning record in both football and lacrosse. Her past ZYFL teams have won Super Bowls and her 5th grade team lost by only one point this year. “My lacrosse team won every single game this past spring season,” Vorbroker shared. “Our team was very competitive, and we beat every school, but like football, I just go from season to season, and I don’t really keep track [of all the wins], but we had a really great lacrosse team this last season, and it was also a lot of fun.”

The Advantages of Coaching the Next Grade Levels When asked what the advantages are of graduating up grade levels and coaching the next grade of kids, Vorbroker said, “I can implement new ideas and new things into the practice plan or game plan, and it seems to be a little easier because the kids understand more of what you’re trying to do.”

Preparing the older kids for the high school programs is also a major focus for Vorbroker as a head coach for athletic feeder programs. “We meet with the high school coaches and go over what they expect us to do as a feeder program for the high school program,” Vorbroker explained. “We know their run plays and pass plays, etc., and try to do exactly what the high school coaches want us to do with this program at the youth level so that when the kids get to the high school level, they know what the pass routes and plays are by the time they get there. And the same thing with the Zionsville Lacrosse Club. We teach the fundamentals and basics so that by the time they’re in high school, they know how to pass, work as a team, etc., and they’re good to go.”

I never thought I’d get involved in football, but I love it, and I went from one season to the next and here I am. I just absolutely love it, and there’s not a lot of women coaches in lacrosse either. I’ve never coached against another female coach, but the guys that I’ve coached against—whether football or lacrosse—have been extremely supportive and helpful.
