I have to admit that this is a tough paper to write. Considering the two choices of Social Justice and Sustainability, I was at a loss and I still am to a degree. In contemplating my involvement with these topic choices there is none. There is no specific event that I can recall where I feel that I am involved. I did do some fundraising with my co–workers. Can I consider that as my community for this exercise? I was in charge of the fundraising events for 3 years for the office where I worked. This was not something that my co–workers fully invested themselves in, but It was a good cause. The events were fun and a good time was had by all. Once the events were over, it was back to what was important to them. There is no judgement on my part as we all do the same. These fundraisers were for an organization called Kids in Distress. A facility/home that looked like your typical suburban home from the outside, but inside it was a facility for hiding children from their...show more content...

If we follow the path of do no harm, isn't the path lost if we are not stepping in before the damage is done? I am not aware that anyone from the office ever continued to be involved, myself included. Does this mean we have dropped the ball? Maybe, but there is more to the story. All of the events were public auctions. We contacted customers and asked them for items. Cash would be ok too, but we needed items for the auctions. Our customers were generous with diamond earrings, 5 pound bags of stone crab claws, old but professionally maintained arcade games, hand painted silk blouses, leather jackets and other really nice things. We even got a visit from Ronald McDonald. In the course of us asking our customers for donations we had to explain what the items were for and who the money would go to. Could they have contributed more to the Kids in Distress program? Had they? Is informing someone of a situation enough to expect them to contribute

Social Justice Reflection

Social sciences and social justice are both based on the structure of rights. Our rights were designed to create equality for all. However, there are always outliers in our justice system and these outliers can be seen by all. My background and demographic are aggressively average growing up in a small, rural community with little diversity which has affected my views about justice. The class Social Problems and Social Injustice has aggressively opened my eyes to new statistics about society and has made some of my intuitions validated and destroyed some of my prior views. My new understanding of social justice is that is was created for all by excluding some. Justice is the structure of our institutions and society. My background and demographic are aggressively average growing up in a small, rural community which there were few minorities and plenty of racism. It was normal to see truck covered in confederate flags and National Rifle Association stickers. My town was mostly blue collar workers and my parents owned and operated their own small business. Life moved slow and if you ran into someone you knew in Kroger and did not ask how their momma was doing it was considered rude. There were few, if any minorities in positions of power like local government and police officers. My views began to shift after I had seen how my school administration treated minorities. During one of my high school football games, our football rivals had made an offensive poster on the opposite

Teachers mention the "real world" during class, but sometimes they fail to see that their students do live in the real world. They have their own lives and go through a diverse amount of experiences. When they mention the real world as if students did not live in the real world yet, it invalidates the experiences they have on a daily basis. A classroom can be seen as a safe nurturing space where students can learn, but sometimes a classroom might not do that for students, especially because of the curriculum and what it fails to address or what it addresses poorly. Now when I think about it how could it not? Social justice takes a big part of my life and experiences. Last year at around this time I had to write an essay that had to include some sort of human rights issue. When writing I take on big topics; social justice topics are anything but simple. Like with many of the essays I have written before in school, I wrote all of my ideas down on paper using an organizational chart. Organizing the chart did not pose many challenges because I already knew what I wanted to write during the introduction of the project. Almost every time I get the opportunity to write about social justice I do it because I can educate myself and others while speaking up about significant topics. The most difficult thing about writing this essay presented itself when I needed sources to back up the claims I already knew were true because I experience them first hand. My writing usually focuses on racial aspects of social justice, but I make sure to include intersectionality because of their importance and relevancy. I wrote Making America White Again during the U. S election, usually when terrible rhetoric becomes even more readily available. I tackled the topic of immigration, more specifically the Mexican immigrant experience. As a Mexican immigrant myself, I see how much the portrayal of Mexican immigrants, and even Mexican people in general lacks accuracy. Just like with many other minority groups,

Social Justice Reflective Essay

Social justice can be termed as phenomenon according to which all the masses are equal in the eye of justice irrespective of their economic, political and social status. Many students aspire to become lawyers for the purpose of social justice. They want to help poor, discriminated and needy, who cannot afford the cost of justice.

Unfortunately, the methodology at law schools dilute is enthusiasm of commitment towards the social lawyering. In fact, research shows that two–thirds of the students who enter law school with intentions of seeking a government or public interest job do not end up employed in that work [28]. Speech On Social Justice

The notion of justice is existence of proper balance of rights and its access under the laws of land. It refers to not depriving any person from availing privileges, opportunities etc. John Rawls writes, "Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override"It means that the interaction in a society must be free from any sort of discrimination such as religion, race, color, caste or sex. It ensures fair distribution of assets and equal opportunity. JosГ© P. Laurel definesSocial Justice as "Social justice is neither communism, nor despotism, nor atomism, nor anarchy, but the humanization of laws and the equalization of social and economic forces by the state so that justice in its rational and objectively secular conception may at least be approximated."

Social justice is that status of the society where "equity" and "just treatment" of individuals exists. It is not limited to safeguarding the rights but also comes with responsibility to maintain a "society for all" providing equal opportunities. A socially just society can be achieved after examining the inequalities and seeking opportunity to curb the same by total elimination. The concept of social justice varies with the different philosophical approaches about the distribution or allocation of resources.

Social Justice is the foundation stone of the Indian Constitution. The provisions of the Constitution of

I have been exposed to social justice issues since I was young. Back in Vietnam, my father discussed with us a lot about political issues, like how people's rights to express themselves are oppressed and that the government does not take care of its citizens and the corruption runs rampant in Vietnamese government. Throughout the time growing up, I have been familiarized with news about police brutality, unregulated toxins in food and other products that cause health implications, government's slow reaction to natural disaster that affects people's lives, and weak law enforcement on environment issues. These problems happen so constantly that I accepted it as a part of life and never thought any further than the fact that they exist.

Social Justice And Diversity Essay

So the argument runs that we live in a world in which there are deep–seated conflicts between cultures embodying different values. Different peoples and cultures have different values, beliefs and truths, many of which are incommensurate but all of which are valid in their own context. Social justice requires not just that individuals are treated as political equals, but that their cultural beliefs are also treated as equally valid. The irony of multiculturalism as a political process is that it undermines much of what is valuable about diversity as lived experience. When we talk about diversity, what we mean is that the world is a messy place, full of clashes and conflicts. That's all for the good, for such clashes and conflicts are the stuff

Similarly, the core value of social justice is defined in the context of ethical principles as that of social workers challenging social injustices. In working with a client like Vivi, a moral dilemma would arise which would have the potential to affect society as a whole by depriving others of the peace, equality, and treatment deserved by all human beings. Also, as a federally mandated reporter, a workers professionalethics and an individual's personal set of standards can become compromised, in that, not only is child abuse and domestic violence an enormous societal problem, but it is also against the law. As a social worker, committed to social justice, one must understand the private and intricate "connection between an individual's suffering and the social context from which it arises"

The Core Value Of Social Justice Essay

Oftentimes, the definition of social justice can be misinterpreted or misunderstood. The true definition of social justice is often structured by governmental implications but is the fair and proper administration of laws to each individual conforming to the natural law. Equality is supposed to be equally distributed amongst individuals nationally, but can sometimes be taken advantage of and be taken away from people who deserve it the most. Generally, those who view social justices as a right, also value people above profits. Socialjustice describes the concept of society where justice is achieved in every aspect of society, rather than just the administration of the law. Overall, social justice gives society the ability to have a voice of laws that may be broken but give a sufficient argument to be heard by the supreme court. Equality is a major issue that has been demanded by society for centuries. In Victor Fleming's film The Way of All Flesh, released in October of 1927, the story describes the life of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman from Baltimore who eventually died of cervicalcancer in 1951. Before she died some of her cancerous cells were taken without her permission and the cells have been reproducing in laboratories around the world ever since. The question is, does taking the cells of a woman who was eventually going to die break the laws of social justice, or was this a necessary action to take in hopes of eventually finding a

Social Justice And Social Injustice

What is social justice? From my perspective, social justice is the enlightened human concern for people of all backgrounds. It is the respect and endearment for people no matter their race, gender, sexuality, religion, or socioeconomic class. Social justice has, in a way, affected my life experience. Social justice hasn't directly impacted my life experience, but I have learned about many cases of injustice throughout my years. Learning about these events and social justice makes me think about current events in a different light. I know see how an event might affect not only myself, but all types of people as well. The Lost Boys struggled for months at a time until the United States was able to accept them into the country. This community in Saint Cloud is just like the Lost Boys of South Sudan. They may seem intimidating to locals because of their lack of knowledge of those cultures, but they are seeking refuge to our country for a reason. They are coming here for safety and to begin a new life in a great country. They are here to be functioning members of a new society and to share their culture with ours. They are not here to hurt us, nor are they here to steal our jobs or money. They are here to be Americans that don't have to worry about their lives being in jeopardy every day of the week. They are here to be one of us. Without learning about social justice, I wouldn't have seen this issue like this. I would have been listened to the accusations made by those who are fearful. Enlightening myself with the knowledge of social justice has helped me see the struggles that people of a different race, gender, sexuality, religion, or socioeconomic class face. I believe that giving these people a chance to tell their story and to let them in with open arms is what social justice is. Social Injustice

When will we stop being unjust? Our society today is full of problems and issues. We not only experience economic and politic issues, but we face social problems as well. One main problem that our society must acknowledge is injustice. However, many members of our society are blind not to recognize that permitting unjust and unfair acts is an actual injustice. They believe it's appropriate to judge others, to make inappropriate comments and to be disrespectful.

For instance, if we accept that discrimination is wrong within ourselves, then this injustice is less likely to happen, but if we believe that discrimination is right then this injustice is more likely to be repeated. We as humans are destroying our own peace and stability. We are creating division amongst ourselves with this injustice, leading our humanity to be more intolerant, offensive, judgmental, immoral and cruel. One the other hand, one way that this injustice can be controlled is if we change our attitudes and behavior. Awareness and acceptance of differences are crucially important to help stop this injustice. First, we must be more cautious about the way we speak and act, then we must respect other's choices, wants and needs. One can't stop this injustice alone but coming together can. Unification is key to overcome and end discrimination. We need to do it for our children, families, friends, communities, but most important for ourselves to create an environment where we can feel safe, free of unequal treatment and unfairness.

On the other hand, another injustice that is apparent in our society is inequality. It causes us to feel insecure, unimportant and unequal. People make others feel less with words and actions. Sometimes we do it subconsciously, meaning that we don't think of the outcome and the damage that we cause them emotionally. When that happens, people feel like they don't

Equality and justice are two ideals that most modern societies strive to achieve. However, over the years many individuals have falsely fought under the banner of justice. Throughout history, many causes have appeared as just and righteous, but in reality most were used to manipulate the masses to fight for ulterior motives of power and control. In the past decade the regressive–left movement of social justice warriors has drawn similar parallels with these causes: its rise has created and continues to cause conflict within various communities and interest groups both in person and online. Originally, the term "social justice warrior" was generally used as a neutral or even complementary term amongst social activists. Nowadays, the progressive crusaders driving these wars are branded with this title with a negative implication. Certain self–proclaimed activists within the radical left proudly embrace the label. These individuals claim that it creates a statement about opposing individuals when they use "social justice" as an insult. But in fact, these crusaders of "social justice" are not about social justice at all. True social justice is expresses equality for all aspects of society and does not claim superiority. This perverted ideological movement of SJWs is a cultish, essentially totalitarian group of individuals. At its core of social justice dogma, there is a fixation on identity and privilege rather than advancement. Parts of the SJW movement touch on real and clear inequities and bring these issues into the public eye. However, a fair majority of the time SJW privilege rhetoric attempts to convey an absurdly simplistic view of complex social dynamics that are much more intricate than gender and racial advantages. An example scenario of the over–simplification of logic from the movement is a scenario of the white son of a poor single mother having an easier easier than the daughter of a wealthy black couple. Scenarios such as the one listed above are largely disregarded by the movement simply because of one party's skin color. The "social justice" left constantly avoids the issue of Get

What is social justice and how does it relate to liberation theology? How do sin, love, grace, and human freedom affect social justice? What restricts freedom and social justice? And how does all of this play a role in the Kingdom of God?

Social justice is a concept of a society in which every human being is treated justly, without discrimination based on financial status, race, gender, ethnicity, etc. Grace is a gift from God that we don't deserve, which helps us choose the good, therefore it promotessocial justice. On the other hand, sin, which can be regarded as a lack of love and care for "others," distances us from social justice. For example, most laws promote an "eye–for–an–eye" type of legal system. This encourages people to retaliate or "get even" with others, which is seen so often in America's lawsuit–happy citizens. This is obviously in contradiction to the ends of social justice, which promote love and brotherhood.

Social justice is not an "us versus them" mentality; rather it is a "were in it together" mentality where the powerful and powerless work together. Obviously those who are in need are the poor and oppressed: women, African–Americans, Jews, Latin Americans, etc. However, due to the fact that these people are in these oppressive situations, they gain insight into the injustices that surround them specifically, and society in general. Although they are made poor by those in power and the structures, institutions, and organizations run by those in power, they still possess "strength to resist, capacity to understand their rights, [and the ability] to organize themselves and transform a subhuman situation (Boff, 1)". The poor and oppressed are held above the rich and powerful, in other words are given preferential treatment. Due to their oppression in life, Get

Social justice is the fair and proper law that shows everybody is equal regardless of their color, race, gender, religion, etc. The thought of executing another human being is completely harsh! My whole life I have been thought that killing is wrong and that no human being has the right to kill another induvial. To my surprise, it's what's happening in our society every day. Giving the death penalty, has no justification. It's another crime being committed, but this time by the government. The death penalty is usually given to a person that's found guilty of a capital crime. However, it's not easy to consider the death penalty as an easy way to punish the guilty. Though many people believe that the death penalty is the right way to punish people that has done hideous crimes, it's possible to kill an innocent person, citizens pay million for the death penalty, and people of color are more likely to be givencapital punishment. The death penalty is a violation of human rights and it should be abolished. "Since 1973, more than 155 people have been released from death row with evidence of their innocence" (the death penalty information center). The lives of many innocent people are being put at risk when prosecutors would "think" that a person have committed a certain crime and he/she is guilty for it, without even having enough evidence that points out they did it. Persuasive Essay On Social Justice

Social justice is mutually a practice and a goal. The goal of social justice is complete and equal contribution by all people in a society that is equally designed to meet their needs. Social justice allows for all members of society to be physically and psychologically safe and secure. It is a set of values that allow us to understand what is right and wrong in our world regardless of race, culture and economic status. That we take care of those in need of help, so that they can take care of themselves. Social justice allows equal rights and opportunities to everyone in society. Economic justice is the belief that we are all entitled to equal opportunities to work. That you receive equal pay for equal work. That we have a fair and open job market. That even if you are an unskilled worker you can still make a living wage. Economic justice is good for everyone because it allows for us to be able to buy the goods made and keeps the economy steady.Social work supports the use an ecological and systems approach to help people with their problems, however for a long time no one paid much attention to the earth. Environmental justice also shines a light on racism and economic injustice. Look at places like Flint, where poor mostly black people were drinking lead–laced water. Without natural resources such as clean drinking water we can't have good health and proper nutrition. Exposure to lead leads to cognitive disabilities and medical concerns. As an undergraduate student, I never imagined becoming a social worker. At that time, I did not have a complete understanding of all the aspects social work encompassed. I was also unaware of the various pathways social work had. Now, to my understanding, social workers are aiming for social and economic justice. Social justice leads to greater social welfare and social change. Social work also aims to help those who face various hardships. Situational, cultural, ethnic diversity and intellectual abilities each play a role. I have come to look at social justice comparable to the American philosopher John Rawls. Both Rawls and I view social justice as a safeguard to members of society who are at a disadvantage. It works to secure equal access to liberties, rights, and opportunities. When denial of liberties and basic human rights is clear, we are looking at the face of injustice. Social justice aims to provide members of society facing injustice the necessary opportunities. Social welfare can be of help to any population: men, women, the elderly, and children. Every race, ethnicity, and religion. Immigrants, veterans, the mentally ill, the mentally disabled and so on. Through my experiences, I have decried multi folds denied liberties and opportunities. I look at these people and ask myself, "What can society do to help them? What can I do to help them? What resources are available to them? How can we meet these people in the position they are and help them overcome?" These

Social Justice As A Social Worker

The main purpose of social work is to advocate for those who have no voice. Throughout history, many individuals have served as role models and proponents of social justice, helping to create policies and programs so future generations can benefit. Jane Addams, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Rachel Carson, and Harriet Tubmanworked tirelessly and devoted their entire lives to the pursuit of justice. We have learned through their sacrifices that change is just one person away, and that it takes tremendous force to shift the political landscape of social welfare policy. Addams' concept of a settlement house coincided with the Industrial Revolution, a movement in history where people moved to cities en masse for more job opportunities. The Industrial Revolution brought about a number of issues that Addams sought to rectify, including harsh working conditions for children, poor sanitation, overcrowding, lack of health care, and the systematic practice of placing the poor in "insane asylums," as they were called, or institutions. This was also the time when charitable organization societies (COS's) went into poor neighborhoods as "friendly visitors" and monitored their conditions (Blau, 2010). There was also a large perception at the time that the poor were responsible for their own plight, and that they should work hard to rise above poverty (Blau, 2010). The perception of the poor as personally responsible for their own situation was derived from Calvinist philosophy and the Elizabethan Poor Laws (Blau, 2010). Both concepts were British traditions that filtered down to the first American colonies, and became the basis for our social welfare system (Blau, 2010). Addams was one of the first individuals to examine the poor from an unbiased perspective, and tended to their needs in a way that did not make them feel accountable or responsible. With the establishment of Hull House, Addams continued to speak out on behalf of the oppressed. Her advocacy activities ranged from speaking

What does Social Justice mean? Well in my opinion it is not as simple as I once thought it was. The goal of social justice is to create a more just society by exploring our individual roles and consciously recognizing the unjust structures around us, then taking action to alleviate or eradicate those structures. These inequalities can be seen in instances of income disparity, sex or gender based prejudice, racial discrimination, and lack of access to public goods and services like education or housing. To help address this issue, numerous organizations supply resources to families, students, facilities, and the public in efforts to thwart the stigma associated with students with disabilities.
