October/November2022
Nota Bene American Association of Dental Editors & Journalists
Helping dental organizations communicate with their members and publics
Gearing up for 2023 As we close out the year, please join us in extending profound thanks and appreciation to Dr. Stuart Segelnick, whose presidential year, while beset with the challenges of coming out of the pandemic, has been marked by his trademark vision, grace, care and good humor. Meanwhile, we welcome incoming AADEJ President, Ann Marie Gothard, whose leadership and communications skills have helped elevate Henry Schein, Inc.’s global commitment to oral health improvements while fostering international relationships and community.
In just a few weeks, you will receive a mailing from the American College of Dentists with your AADEJ membership notice enclosed. For those of you who took the time to re-join our numbers in the past year, we thank you most sincerely! We encourage you to renew your membership for 2023 – and, moreover, to encourage your colleagues to do the same. With your involvement and support, AADEJ can continue to fulfill its role as the preeminent source for dental editing/journalism professionals. The AADEJ membership recently met in Houston. It was very exciting to finally have the opportunity to meet in person, and it was gratifying to hear from attendees that the continuing education sessions were extremely useful and fun. This was a kickoff to a new era for AADEJ, an era during which we, your Board members, are very committed to continuing – and growing – engagement, professional fulfillment and camaraderie. Going forward, our promise to the membership includes this: • To retain and promote the finest principles and ethics of dental journalism. There are new ways of disseminating information to our colleagues, including methods of social media, and many of us might be struggling to master our communications in order to best inform, educate and raise awareness and crucial issues essential to those who work in our field. • To conduct a series of webinars and other continuing education programs throughout the year that will help you to excel in all facets of your career as a dental editor or journalist. Included among them, a midwinter session in Chicago. • To continue to grow the opportunities inherent in our new relationship as a section of the American College of Dentists, which further expands our chance to help all AADEJ members to succeed. • To grow an online database of articles and photographs that can accessed through your membership in AADEJ. These resources will be immeasurable to helping you create thought-provoking content that tells a compelling stories – the basis of all good journalism. In advance of 2023, thank you for your commitment to ethics and excellence in dental journalism. We welcome you back, and thank you for your ongoing support and commitment. Together, we have the opportunity to do very great things. Please, take the time to renew your AADEJ membership, and share the message with your colleagues and associates!
Reminder: CE at the GNYDM! Last year, a survey sponsored by BusinessWire found that 46% of journalists see a lack of trust in the news as the biggest challenge in modern journalism. This statistic holds true throughout the broad spectrum of media vehicles and audiences, which means, of course, that this affects the viability and perceived trustworthiness of dental editors and journalists. On Friday, November 25, AADEJ will sponsor Misinformation and Disinformation in Communication at the Greater New York Dental Meeting at the Javits Center in Manhattan. This session, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12 noon, has been designed to help dental editors and journalists continue to maintain open communications systems while promoting ethical and professional standards and literacy in order to build and maintain reader trust and correct fake news. AADEJ has lined up an all-star lineup of speakers, including Jaci Clement, CEO and Executive Director, Fair Media; Adam Marcus, cofounder of Retraction Watch and the Center for Scientific Integrity, and Editorial Director, Medscape, and Richard Niederman, DMD, professor and chair, NYU College of Dentistry, and Co-Director, WHO Collaborating Center for Quality-Improvement EvidenceBased Dentistry (QED), Epidemiology and Health Promotion. Check aadej.org in the next few weeks for registration information for Misinformation and Disinformation in Communication.
