ACD
Dear Fellows of Regency 1,
I hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer! It has proved to be a warm and humid one thus far here in NYC.
I would like to start out by first thanking the Section Chairs and SPEA Presidents who have contributed material to this Newsletter. Their contributions are critical to its success!
A few updates on ACD National….as you know, this Spring Mike Graham was introduced as the new Executive Director of the ACD. It has been a pleasure to get to know Mike and work with him thus far. The College is in good hands with Mike!
The Ethics Handbook has been revised and can be downloaded from ACD National’s website. Print copies can also be requested from National. Eight new “Core Values” are introduced in this updated edition: Accountability, Competence, Dignity, Collaboration, Advocacy, Reflection, Empathy & Stewardship. They form the pneumonic “ACD CARES.” A reference to the Handbook is included in this newsletter.
In response to Feedback from Fellows, the Nomination Forms have been revised with the goal of creating as seamless a nomination process as possible. There is now one single Nomination form. A reference to the new form is also included in this Newsletter. Please keep in mind Nominations can be sent in year-round. So, if you come across a Colleague you would like to nominate, you can do so at any time!
On September 12th-13th there will be an Ethics Summit in Rockville, Maryland for Fellows, please keep a watch out for more information about this in the coming months. The Summit will focus on the subject of Breaking Down the Silos: Dentistry’s Ethical Responsibility as a Partner in Healthcare. I encourage all of you to attend the annual ACD meeting this fall in New Orleans from October 16th-17th. The focus this year will be on Leadership and a wonderful program is being developed. Rooms are going fast so please be sure to sign up soon if you are interested in attending.
Please feel free to reach out with any ACD related questions or concerns. As your Regent, I will do my best to assist and if I do not know the answer, I will work to figure one out.
Have a wonderful summer,
Julie Connolly, DDS
July 15, 2024 Greetings from the American College
of Dentists National Office
What have we been up to this summer at the College?
We are focused on enhancing the College’s sense of community by building excitement and engagement within the College itself. With our strategic plan as our guide, we’re beginning to launch the following programs to:
Promote our new ACD Ethics Handbook. Already we have distributed over 3,000 copies to dentists and students.
Refresh our dentalethics.org website to make the website resource and learning experience — “best in class.”
Develop and implement a Section program to build management and administrative capacity in all sections as well as create robust programing, including leadership training for leaders throughout the College.
Collaborate more with our SPEA Chapters.
Reestablish our Foundation giving programs. We remain very hopeful that with all these impactful changes through our strategic plan goals, we can energize our Fellows to make significant contributions to the Foundation that does so much good for the profession.
I’m also happy to tell you that we expect to induct over 300 Fellows to the College this fall at our annual meeting in New Orleans. That’s the biggest class of Fellows post-Covid.
And just a little more about the annual meeting in New Orleans, we’re holding our meeting at the historic Roosevelt Hotel, a five-star Waldorf Astoria property. Already, our registration numbers are twice what they were last year at this time! I hope every Fellow will consider attending (October 16 and 17).
As always, feel free to reach out to me anytime.
Best regards,
Mike Graham, ACD Executive Director mike@acd.org,

July 15, 2024
On January 18th, the New York section of the American College of Dentists held its annual banquet at the Penn Club. The immediate past Chair, Dr. Julie Connolly, ran a well-attended, excellent meeting. At the meeting, our section gave out awards for outstanding student leadership. The recipients were from the various dental schools in our area. That evening, it was announced that the section had added 15 new fellows inducted at the ACD Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. We look forward to our new fellows participating and enjoying what our section offers.
That night, which was our installation dinner, I was fortunate to be installed as the new Chair of the New York section. I consider it both an honor and a privilege to serve our section and I look forward to my year ahead.
Our spring meeting on May 14th at the Penn Club featured Dr. James Hudson and Dr. Yakir Arteaga speaking on “Transformative ServiceLearning Through Dental Outreach.” We were fortunate to have Dr. Teresa Dolan, the ACD National President, and the ADC’s new Executive Director, Mike Graham, attend this meeting. We were thrilled to have them there and hear them speak about the ACD and its positive changes.
On May 30, Dr. Guy Minoli, represented the New York Section at Touro Dental School’s white coat ceremony.
Our spring/summer event took place on June 22nd. We visited the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, N.Y. Lyndhurst is a majestic estate on the banks of the Hudson River and is considered one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions. It is one of only 27 National Trust Historic sites to be open to the public. Afterwards, we had a wonderful lunch at the RiverMarket Bar and Kitchen, a terrific restaurant overlooking the Hudson River. The social event was well attended, and everyone had a great time.
We will have a NY Section Fellow speak at the White Coat Ceremony at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine on August 5th.
Then, in the fall, we will have a Section meeting sometime in October.
Respectfully submitted,
Egidio Farone, Chair

Summer 2024
Our annual Section meeting will be held on September 14th in Bay Fortune, PEI. As part of the Fireworks Feast on Saturday night at the Inn on Bay Fortune, we will be joining the Head Farmer at the Inn on a guided culinary tour – followed by a live-fire hors d’oeuvre party including ‘fresh from the Bay’ oysters.
This year at the Convocation dinner, the graduates were presented with their White Coats – welcoming them to the profession. The Outstanding Student Leader Award, honouring Dr. David Peters, was awarded to Cecelia Keith for outstanding leadership, scholastic performance, compassionate patient care and potential for impact on the profession of dentistry while a dental student at Dalhousie. Dr. Debora Matthews was honoured to present the Convocation address at the Convocation Ceremony on May 24th.
In lieu of the former ‘White Coat Ceremony’, we will be sponsoring an ethics seminar during Orientation Week in August. Dr. Martin Gillis, a former Provincial Dental Board Registrar, will be addressing the new dentistry students. Mr. Serge Hache, a DDS 3 student, attended the 2023 SPEA conference. During Orientation Week he will also present a summary of his experiences from the conference and outline some of the benefits of joining our SPEA Chapter.
All of our recent nominees for Fellowship were approved; the new Fellows received their Fellowship package in June. Four nominees have postponed their convocation to 2025. One nomination was ‘misplaced’ by Head Office. Unfortunately, this was the third time in four years this has occurred. Nonetheless, we will welcome Jennifer MacLellan, Tamara Wright, Paul Cameron, Chad Avery and Marco Chiarot as new Fellows at the 2024 AGM and Convocation in the Big Easy in October. Let the good times roll!
Several of our current and incoming Fellows have received or will be receiving prestigious recognition and awards for their dedication to the profession.
Dr. Ian Doyle
Dr. Doyle is the President-elect of the International College of Dentists, International. He will be installed in November, 2024 in New York City at the International Congress.
Dr. Terrie Logue

The award recognizes significant contributions to improve the quality of human life that extend beyond the usual scope of private practice, academic functions, or organized dentistry.
Dr. Martin Gillis
Dr. Gillis is one of two Nova Scotians (both ACD Fellows) who were awarded the 2023-24 Canadian Dental Association Distinguished Service Award. From 2013 to 2021, he was the Registrar of the Provincial Dental Board and initiated the updating of provincial written standards for dentistry. He was a founding member of the Nova Scotia Regulated Heath Professions Network. He set up emergency clinics and re-introduced comprehensive dentistry at the start of the COVID pandemic and was the liaison for the profession with the Provincial Chief Medical Officer of Health.
Dr. Jennifer MacLellan
Dr. MacLellan, who will receive her Fellowship In New Orleans, was also awarded the 2023-24 Canadian Dental Association Distinguished Service Award. She is a past Nova Scotia Dental Association President, supported the profession through the COVID pandemic. New England Section Report
Maria A. Smith, DMD, Chair
I“The cohesiveness, mutual respect and willingness to “get the job done” has made it easy and yes, even fun, for our board to move our section forward, always keeping in mind the best interests of our fellows.”
am pleased and honored to have our New England Section again designated as a Model Section. I look forward to accepting this important honor bestowed upon our section on behalf of our board and all of our fellows at the national Annual Meeting in New Orleans this fall. Our strength to make this happen would not have been possible if we did not have such a committed and dedicated group of both current leaders and the addition of new leaders to our board with fresh ideas that I am honored to have the opportunity to closely work with this year. The cohesiveness, mutual respect and willingness to “get the job done” has made it easy and yes, even fun, for our board to move our section forward, always keeping in mind the best interests of our fellows.
As I have stated in previous reports, communication, visibility and engagement are extremely important to the viability of our section and emphasis during the course of my tenure as chair has been placed on that as our key priority so that we will be more effective in meeting
our members’ needs to not only remain member fellows, but to also be advocates for ACD in ethics and professionalism for others and the public at large. With this in mind, I have the following meetings and events updates for our section in 2024 since my last report.
New England Section Report
Maria A. Smith,
First, our Annual Meeting took place on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 7pm by Zoom. This change was implemented due to the first ever joint ACD/ICD Awards Luncheon at the Yankee Dental Congress which necessitated this meeting being separated from that luncheon. At that time, members in attendance voted a new slate of officers and board members for the 2024/2025 year as well as voting to approve our newly revised draft bylaws. Updates were given to all who attended on our section activities as well as encouraging more members to become involved on various committees where we could use expertise, input and volunteers. We hope to increase the number of New England fellows attending this meeting in the future because it is virtual and easily accessible to all. Bad weather is not an issue or an excuse anymore!!
Second, as I have just mentioned, our newly revised format for our ACD/ ICD luncheon at the YDC took place on January 26, 2024 at the Seaport Hotel, still in the usual venue, and was solely dedicated to bestowal of awards by both ACD and ICD for deserving individuals and ACD senior dental students. Not only did both organizations have great attendance at this event with inclusion of dignitaries from ACD and ICD national as well as ADA but it was hugely successful! Planning for the luncheon for January 31, 2025 is already in the works with both organizations committed to its continuation, growth and success. Our five Outstanding Student Leader Awards from our New England dental schools presented at that meeting are as follows:
• Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine presented by Dean Cataldo Leon to Mary Morcos
• Harvard University School of Dental Medicine presented by Dr. Sang Park to Joe Montesano Tufts University School of Dental Medicine presented by Dean Nadeem Karimbux to Zana Hunt
New England Section Report
Maria A. Smith, DMD, Chair
• University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine presented by Dean Steven M. Lepowsky to Jerry D. Gargano
• University of New England School of Dental Medicine presented by Dean Nicole Kimmes to Macy Punzalan
Other awards and recognition earned by our section fellows are:
• Dr. Breno Reboucas, is the principal investigator for a $1.5 million, five-year grant awarded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to develop a new pediatric educational program for predoctoral dental students and a training program for practicing dentists in community health centers. Dr. Breno Reboucas is Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s Director of Predoctoral Pediatric Dentistry and a clinical associate professor in the departments of general and pediatric dentistry.
• Mary McCabe, DDS, MBA, FACD 2023 Dr. Steven Brin Physician of the Year Awardee The Free Clinic’s mission is to continue to provide quality, comprehensive medical, dental, vision and behavioral health care to medically uninsured Rhode Island adults. It celebrated its 25th year in 2023!
Our leadership dinner for Regency 1 Regent, chairs and other individuals, took place on Friday January 26, 2024 as well as our Regent’s Leadership Meeting on Saturday, January 27 at 8am which included section chairs, section officers, invited guests as well as representatives from all of the SPEA chapters in Regency 1. This was extremely well attended and the discussions and interactions, particularly with the SPEA chapters gave us all great insight as to next steps for our sections and further collaborations with SPEA. In fact, the Boston University chapter held a mock trial event termed the “Trial of the Century” on April 2, 2024 and was a huge hit. The distribution on site of the ACD and ADA code of ethics books to the students in attendance by our own Dr. Meredith Bailey, student advisor to the group, was very well received.
I am pleased to report that my meeting with Dean Lebowsky of UConn SDM in February to discuss future interactions with the UConn chapter went well and I have been invited this August to attend and present at the White Coat ceremony for the students, a first for ACD NE. I am looking forward to this and the closer interaction with the school, the Dean and the chapter moving forward. I have also spoken with Dean Kimmes from UNE in Maine who is personally taking on the project of resurrecting the SPEA chapter at her school. Again, any help that ACD NE can give to facilitate this was extended to her at the joint ACD/ICD luncheon in January, 2024.
We are again scheduled to give a lecture at the Yankee Dental Congress for Thursday, January 30, 2025 titled “Innovating with Integrity: Navigating the Ethical Landscape of AI in Dentistry”. The course panelists include American College NE Fellows Drs. Robert Faiella, Meredith Bailey and Christopher Balaban
We undertook a survey of our full membership (a first for our section) as to needs and activities and what New England can provide for its fellows. We had over 80 survey responses returned and collected much valued information from those responses. From that survey our discussions were able to be focused and finalized on actions and programming for the current 6 months to 1 year
and will include one webinar by the end of the year and a face-to-face education course since many responders preferred a hybrid format for educational opportunities. Speakers are being finalized for both with the venue for the in-person course to be held at the Straumann Center in Andover, MA. One of our new soon to be fellows is working on this and will also be joining our board as our expert in social media communications after his induction in New Orleans into the ACD. This is our first face to face course since all was shut down during Covid so we are really excited to offer it to all of our New England members as well as our neighboring sections. More information about registration and logistics will be forthcoming by early 2025.
Our board continues to meet regularly, approximately every 6 weeks which has worked well for this year. We continue to actively recruit new members for board positions to align with succession planning for our section and continue to actively communicate with all of our New England members. Times are challenging in our profession and we are committed to keeping our members engaged and up to date on our section activities.
Respectfully submitted,
Maria A. Smith, DMD Chair, New England Section
SPEA Update
COLUMBIA
SPEA at Columbia had an extremely successful year! With the idea to collaborate with different clubs on campus to organize events, we were able to tap into ethical dilemmas that arise in various specialties. We first partnered with the periodontics club to host Dr. Tom Connolly, Dr. Julie Connolly, and Dr. John Lanzetta to serve as panelists for an event, and then a few months later we partnered with the orthodontics club to host Dr. Mark Bronsky for an event. We also held our two annual events during the spring semester: The SafeZone Event and the Mock Case Review. The SafeZone event is an open forum
for students to anonymously present any ethical or professional concerns that they have with the dental school, and SPEA presents these concerns to the administration. For the Mock Case Review this year, we hosted Dr. Gabriela Lee, Dr. Egidio Farone, and Dr. Steven Cho to respond to specific challenging scenarios that can arise in clinic or practice. We have just confirmed the E-board for the 2024-2025 school year, and we are excited for another year of SPEA events at Columbia!

UCONN
We are looking forward to the upcoming year with UConn’s SPEA chapter. Our E-Board is remaining the same from last year, with the addition of a newly elected D2 Representative and we will elect a new D1 Representative when the incoming class arrives on campus. We are excited to have a SPEA representative in each class for continuity, unity, and collaboration! We will be recruiting new members at the Student Activities Fair in late August to continue to grow our group and will be meeting soon to outline the year. We are looking forward to planning more events, successful collaboration amongst all four classes, and continuing to represent UConn SPEA at district events! Thank you for your continued support!!

TUFTS
This semester has been a phenomenal period of growth and engagement for the Tufts chapter of the Student Professionalism and Ethics Association (SPEA).
We are thrilled to announce a significant increase in our membership, with more students actively participating and contributing to our events and organization.
Our events this semester have been particularly successful and well-received.
Highlights include:
“Like,
Share, and Floss” Discussion on Social Media
This event provided a comprehensive overview of the impact of social media on dental practices and professionalism. It sparked meaningful conversations and gave our members valuable insights into managing their online presence.
“Dental
Care on Wheels: Understanding Mobile Clinics & Increase in Dental Therapists”
This informative session shed light on the growing trend of mobile dental clinics and the important role of dental therapists in expanding access to dental care.
