2015 COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON BOARDS CONTACT US DONOR REPORT 2015 | 1

I’m pleased to present the College of Charleston 2015 Donor Report. It is truly an exciting time to be involved with the College of Charleston. The College is on the move academically, programmatically and philanthropically. And our future is as bright and boundless as ever.

TO OUR COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON COMMUNITY

Thank you for making the College a priority in your 2015 giving. Support from donors like you are the driving force for our achievements across the entire campus, from awarding scholarships and establishing new programs to pursuing innovative research and being victorious on the athletic field. Individually and collectively, your generosity enables us to provide students with unique educational experiences that help them identify their passions and give them the foundation for success in life. That is why we launched the BOUNDLESS campaign in October 2009 – to strengthen and create opportunities across campus that give students the grounding that will serve them in their future pursuits, and also to inspire our community of alumni and friends to partner with the College in these efforts. BOUNDLESS is the framework for our ever-growing levels of support and engagement, during and after the campaign. I am especially proud to share that this winter the College surpassed our original campaign goal of $125 million. We’ve raised more than $127 million, which is an amazing achievement and an important milestone made possible by nearly 23,000 benefactors. BOUNDLESS is indeed the College’s largest and most successful campaign in our institution’s 246-year history. While we are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far, this doesn’t represent our full potential. The BOUNDLESS campaign has several goals still left to achieve, and we need to continue this momentum and carry it all the way through to the campaign’s end on June 30th (and beyond). We have the ability to achieve so much more as a community. And that’s why I’m so passionate and inspired for our future.

2 | 2015 DONOR REPORT

As we look forward, it is certain that the College will continue to empower students, enhance our community and explore bolder opportunities. We celebrate the traditions that have brought us this far, but are sharply focused on a future that brings the humanities, sciences and businesses together in a way that enriches our liberal arts degrees and presents our students as very employable individuals and lifelong learners. Now is our time to write the next chapter in our history. Now is our time to provide the margin of excellence that will raise our stature and enhance our student experience. Now is our time to make a difference. I offer my thanks to you for all you do for the College of Charleston. We are truly blessed by your commitment and loyalty. Sincerely,

Glenn F. McConnell '69, president

President McConnell served more than 30 years in the South Carolina Senate. He was f irst elected in 1980 and went on to serve in several key leadership posts. In 2001, he was elected the f irst Republican President Pro Tempore of the South Carolina Senate and then ascended to the off ice of Lieutenant Governor in March of 2012. He is regarded as one of the most respected, influential and effective leaders in state government.

“Educators cannot do their work in isolation; we must form meaningful partnerships. Our partnership with Chucktown Squash has resulted in positive outcomes for the participating students who came from the lowest income households in Charleston and for our own College of Charleston students and faculty members.” – Fran Welch, Dean of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance

BOUNDLESS: The Campaign for the College of Charleston plays a critical role in preserving the College as one of the nation’s best public liberal arts and sciences universities for quality education, student life and affordability. Private philanthropy touches every corner of campus: from student scholarships to faculty research funds, from innovative technology to world-class athletics. The impact of your gifts reaches across South Carolina and the world. Meet the students, faculty, programs and places impacted by your gifts. ❰❰ CHUCKTOWN SQUASH:

MORE THAN JUST A GAME

Since 2009, the College of Charleston’s School of Education, Health, and Human Performance has collaborated with Chucktown Squash to provide both athletic training and community service to youth from Charleston’s Title I elementary, middle and high schools. This unique after-school program exposes inner-city kids to how college can change their lives and provides undergraduate students the opportunity to serve as role models to local youth from diverse backgrounds and help them develop crucial life skills. A renovation to the F. Mitchell Johnson Physical Education Center is necessary to continue the Chucktown Squash Scholars Program. The College has a $500,000 fundraising goal to create a new squash center that can adequately serve the undergraduate students, the nationally ranked Club Squash Team (in the top 50 clubs in the country), faculty and staff. With five international standard courts, an enhanced squash facility will reach a diverse audience, serving more youth from the Charleston community, including high-achieving minority students, and will also provide hosting opportunities for the national squash network.

MCCONNELL'S LIVING LEGACY TO STUDENTS Shortly after becoming the 22nd president of the College of Charleston, Glenn F. McConnell ’69 created an endowed scholarship through the College of Charleston Foundation. The purpose of this scholarship was to provide funding to talented students who demonstrate high financial need and have overcome hardships. It is intended for students in the Charleston area and helps to continue the McConnells' ties to Charleston and the College. Born and raised in Charleston, President McConnell is one of the five McConnell children who are CofC alumni. “A scholarship is a gift from the heart that keeps on giving long after one’s heart stops,” says President McConnell. “For a student, it is the chance to be what that person aspires to be despite the obstacles. For us, the College family, it is our living legacy to be the helping hand.” The first recipient, Maribel Garcia ’19, embodies the qualities that make a McConnell Scholar and further the McConnell family legacy at the College. Garcia has already gone above and beyond, working hard and maintaining a solid GPA. She credits her high school teachers for giving her a firm foundation. Through it all, she has shown resilience and has dedicated herself to becoming a teacher so she can pay it forward, just like President McConnell did. “I think that working with children and helping them to learn new, exciting things and form ideas will be an amazing experience,” says Garcia, adding that she was inspired by the educators she's met along the way. “With all of the support they've shown me, my teachers from high school really influenced me in wanting to become an educator.”

IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS — NATHAN GILLESPIE ‘17 | GREENWOOD, S.C. — POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR

SCHOLARSHIPS: ALEXANDRIA DENGATE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP (3 YEARS), COFC FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP (2 YEARS) Nathan Gillespie knew he wanted to go to law school by the time he was 11 years old. A native of Greenwood, S.C., Gillespie also knew that he wanted to be in Charleston when it came time to go to college. ”My family would often take vacations to Charleston, and so I fell in love with this beautiful and historic place at an early age," says the political science major. "Seizing the opportunity to further my education while living here just seemed like a natural choice.” The scholarships he received were just an added bonus. “My scholarships have been a huge help to me in attending the College,” says Gillepsie, who is currently working for a downtown law firm. ”Many political science undergraduates are faced with a choice: work jobs that pay but are not related to their field, or work for free in a related area. Scholarships help ease the financial burden of attending college for not just me but all recipients. They make it easier to work at unpaid internships for the networking opportunities and experiences that they provide. I greatly appreciate my donors! Thank you.”

NEW SCHOLARSHIP FUND PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS Rallis Pappas is a proud graduate of the class of 1978 and was one of the first members of his family to attend the College of Charleston. His two brothers, Nik Pappas ’81 and Ted Pappas ’85, as well as Rallis' son Michael ’12 and nephew Stephen ’15, followed in his footsteps and graduated from the College with distinctive experiences of their own. Over the years, Rallis has been actively involved with the College by serving as an admissions volunteer and leader on the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and on the CofC Alumni Board. As firm believers in the value of a college education, Rallis and his wife Dendy initiated the Pappas Family Endowed Scholarship to create opportunities for students to attend the College of Charleston and experience the unique attributes of both the College and the City of Charleston. With the belief that the College’s students will be positively impacted by sharing the College of Charleston learning experience with others outside of the state of South Carolina, this scholarship is open to out-of-state students who otherwise would not have the resources to attend college. 8 | 2015 DONOR REPORT

Faculty Member Creates the Andrew and Josephine Lewis Endowed Scholarship Andrew Lewis Sr. and his wife Josephine created the Andrew and Josephine Lewis Endowed Scholarship for the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance. Andrew has worked at the College for more than 34 years and has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Albany State University, a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Tennessee and a doctorate in adapted physical education from The Ohio State University. During his time with the College, Andrew has served as chair and associate professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, interim assistant dean for undergraduate studies, director of the Office of Professional Development in Education and emeritus associate professor for the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance. A former member of the Cougar Club Board, Andrew established the R. Andrew H. Lewis Scholarship at the College in 2010. The Lewises are also members of the 1770 Society and the Live Oak Society. When Andrew became chair of the Department of Health and Human Performance in 1991, he made history by becoming the first African American to serve as department chair at the College of Charleston. The purpose of his family’s scholarship is to award African American students majoring in physical education or in the Department of Health and Human Performance a step up. The Lewis scholar must have a strong academic record. It is the Lewises' hope that students of similar backgrounds can have the same opportunities that Andrew Lewis has had.

IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS GOOGLE SUPPORTS RACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVES

In response to the tragic shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel A.M.E. Church on June 17, 2015, Google stepped forward to partner with the College of Charleston and the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture to host a series of events to examine race and social justice in our communities. This new Race and Social Justice Initiative features a series of events, lectures, symposiums, exhibits and screenings to foster dialogue that promotes awareness of the history and ongoing struggles of racial injustice in Charleston, South Carolina and the United States. The first of the events featured a community forum titled, "Ties That Bind Two Holy Cities: Reflections in Charleston by Survivors of the 1963 Birmingham Church Bombing."

New Jewish Studies Fund Provides Resources for Building Student Community Howard and Julie Levine established the Howard and Julie Levine Fund for Jewish Student Life with an endowed commitment of $250,000 to provide critical resources for the Jewish Student Union/Hillel’s community-building efforts. The Levines’ contribution makes possible the weekly meet-toeat program, which comprises approximately 30 meals each year to Jewish and non-Jewish students. These events create a venue for students from a wide variety of backgrounds to break bread together and mingle.

Howard Levine graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1981 and embarked on a very successful merchandising career, which includes his appointment in 1998 to CEO of Family Dollar. In 2003, he was named CEO and chairman of the board, positions he held until January 2016. He remains on the board of directors. Their daughter Amanda graduated from the College of Charleston in May 2015 with a degree in public health.

STUDENTS LAUNCH GRATITUESDAY On Tuesday, November 11, Committed to Charleston (C2C) hosted the College's first-ever GratiTUESDAY event, giving students the opportunity to say "thank you" to the donors, faculty, staff and alumni who have made their CofC experience not just possible, but memorable, as well. As part of the GratiTUESDAY effort, our students thank YOU, our leadership donors who have made their education a priority. The students leading this stewardship effort are part of the C2C student philanthropy group, which is focused on gifts to the College of Charleston Fund. C2C is open to all students who are interested in enhancing academic excellence, preserving a student-focused community and having a direct impact on advancing the College of Charleston. At the GratiTUESDAY event, students joined Clyde the Cougar in writing thank-you notes and filming video messages describing their gratitude for donor support. They also thanked staff and faculty by offering them travel mugs that can be filled for free at Starbucks for the month of November. Free coffee month has become a tradition on this campus, and we have celebrated our faculty and staff donors for 5 years in a row. 10 | 2015 DONOR REPORT

Redoubling Career-Ready Resources Like never before, the College of Charleston is recognizing that it must dramatically enhance its preparation and positioning of students to meaningfully launch their careers. The School of Business has embarked on an initiative to respond to this need by developing the Student Advancement Center. In collaboration with the College, business faculty, alumni, parents, friends and donors, the Student Advancement Center (SAC) will build a portfolio of workshops and seminars, professional staff, resources, technology access and an operating environment to prepare business majors and other professionally minded students at the College to be “ready to work.” Creating the SAC requires $1 million in philanthropic funding, which seeds its initial operations from 2015–

2019. Goals include developing a multi-year framework of professional development opportunities for undergraduates and dramatically growing the number of employers that actively and regularly consider our students for internships, co-ops and jobs upon graduation. Donor support has been strong, particularly from the business school’s Board of Governors. Through 2015, $623,000 in gifts and commitments was received. This early support has already enabled some notable outcomes in employers growing closer to the College. New and expanded relationships that are resulting in internship and job offers have been forged with companies such as Target, Amazon, IBM, ScanSource, BMW, Michelin and George Weiss and Associates.

IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS Pioneers in Public Health Provide Opportunities for CofC Students Dr. Eugene Gangarosa and his wife Rose have spent their lives championing public health and safe water initiatives and are considered public health legends, both as experts and educators. Eugene’s career includes his work at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where his research laid the foundation for the cholera treatment that reduced the infant mortality rate. He has also taught at the Pakistan Medical Research Center and served as the director of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, chief of the Enteric Diseases Branch and deputy director of the Bacterial Diseases Division at the Center for Disease Control. He also served as the dean of American University of Beirut before helping to transform the public health graduate program at Emory University into the Rollins School of Public Health. Inspired by their own experiences, Eugene and Rose also founded the Gangarosa International Health Foundation, which supports student-learning opportunities outside of the classroom.

— YUHONG TU ‘16 | NANCHANG, CHINA — Music Major

SCHOLARSHIPS: SOTA-MUSIC (2 YEARS), LEE HARWOOD (2 YEARS), KITE FOUNDATION IN STRINGS (3 YEARS), KOGER WICHMANN (2 YEARS), ISABELLA MEBANE (2 YEARS), VIRGINIA ZEIGLER POTTER (2 YEARS), JOHN A. ZEIGLER, JR. MUSIC (2 YEARS), ZEIGLER & WILLIAMS (2 YEARS) and INTERNATIONAL PIANO (1 YEAR) My family loves music, especially my mother. Our household love of music fostered my own musical talent at a very young age. My mother was impressed with my natural musical ability and potential, so she took me to a children's academy, where I began studying violin at age 7. Because of this passion, I left my family at age 13 and enrolled in one of the top conservatories in China, Wuhan Conservatory of Music. In 2013, I came to the United States to pursue undergraduate studies at the College of Charleston. I will graduate in May 2016 and am currently auditioning at top conservatories and universities in the United States to pursue a graduate degree. The scholarships I received at the College of Charleston made studying in the United States possible for me. While in Charleston, I have become the concertmaster with the CofC Orchestra, played in the Young Artist Series in Piccolo Spoleto for four years and performed several concerts around the community. In summer 2015, I received an invitation to study at the Aspen Music Festival. I received financial support for this opportunity from the John Zeigler Travel Fund for Music and from the Dean’s Excellence Fund from SOTA. The College has served as my support system from day one, and I am forever grateful for the generosity of its donors.

After speaking with students at the College (and being encouraged by their son, Paul, who is an adjunct faculty member in the College’s Department of Health and Human Performance), the Gangarosas initiated the Gangarosa Endowed Fund for Global Public Health Experiences. This unique scholarship provides financial support for students majoring in public health to participate in global public health internships that a focus on safe water and sanitation. Both Eugene and Rose see this fund as an opportunity to invest in the future of the global community and hope it will help foster a growing knowledge of public health at the College of Charleston and beyond. IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS — SONDRICA GOINES ’18 | COLUMBIA, S.C. — CHEMISTRY MAJOR

SCHOLARSHIP: LETTIE PATE WHITEHEAD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP (2 YEARS) Hoping to expand her horizons, Sondrica Goines chose the College of Charleston because she felt the professors would have faith in her and push her out of her comfort zone. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Goines chose to major in chemistry because she knew she’d always be challenged to learn more as a chemist. “Chemists are constantly learning and making new discoveries that are relevant to our society, and I felt that a degree in chemistry would allow me to use my skill set to contribute to the world I live in while allowing me to remain a student within my trade,” says the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Scholar, who has been working hard for the past two years not just to be a good student, but to be able to pay it forward. “Coming from a single-parent household, I knew that scholarships were the only way I could obtain the education I'd need to give back to society,” says Goines, who – with the goal of growing and inspiring – sees her educational journey as a holistic one. “I hope to show children with a similar background to mine that they can conquer anything as long as they work to achieve their goals. And, with the generosity of my donor, I am able to set an example for them and take the first step in achieving my own goals.”

PAC CHAIRS LEAD THE WAY Tyler and Sunshine Leinbach, parents of CofC students Sunshine (Sunny) ’16 and Charlotte ’18, are the new national chairs of the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and donors to the Parents’ Fund and the College of Charleston Fund. “As members of the Parent Advisory Council, we can see that there are some incredible things going on at CofC and in the Charleston area. It has recently been stated that the CofC goal is ‘to be a world class university in a world class city.’ With the leadership and enthusiasm we see at CofC, we feel that this is an extremely achievable goal, and we are very excited about and are inspired to support. Everybody wants to back a winner! President McConnell is doing a wonderful job of leveraging his experience and expertise in the South Carolina legislature to provide greater funding for CofC, but we both know that this is not enough to fund all of the current and planned initiatives at the College. And of course, we also want to support the institution that is doing such a wonderful job of educating both of our children.”

Continued Commitment to the Success of Theatre Students Former faculty member Allen Lyndrup and his beloved wife Ann have been longtime supporters of the College of Charleston’s Department of Theatre and Dance. Committed to strengthening the programs and opportunities the department provides its students, Allen spent over 20 years teaching in a number of theatre disciplines, including acting, directing, technical theatre, scene design, theatre history and script analysis. He also served as chair of the department, and his leadership is evident in his accomplishments: designing and supervising the building of the Chapel Theatre, managing a successful summer dinner theater, writing the musical score for the College’s production of Lysistrata and – in honor of Mozart’s 250th birthday – writing, producing and directing Wolfi!, a biographical play about the influential composer. The Lyndrups are continuing their support with the Anne Marley Lyndrup and Allen Lyndrup Theatre Scholarship, which will provide financial assistance to an exemplary junior or senior in the College’s Department of Theatre and Dance. “We are committed to the bright futures of the student recipients and the ongoing success of the department,” says Allen. The first recipient will be selected in fall 2016.

IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS NEW COUGARS WELOMED TO CAMPUS Anyone who has spent time in Charleston has spotted a festive pineapple on a fountain, a wrought-iron gate or somewhere else. While it may not have originated here, this symbol of hospitality has long been embraced by this city, known for its welcoming spirit. At noon on August 20, 2015, pineapples with names and welcoming messages for all of our new students began popping up all around campus. This was all a part of the new program: #CougarWelcome. Powered by social media, the first-ever #CougarWelcome was a 36-hour online event built around move-in day that invited alumni, parents, students and the College community to participate in three ways: 1 Extend a warm #CougarWelcome by welcoming new students to campus, sharing advice or a move-in day memory via social media 2 Make a #HousewarmingGift by making a gift to the College of Charleston Fund

Kenan Family Endowed Investment Program Award

lege of ch ol

A strong partnership between College of Charleston faculty and alumni like Frank Kenan ’05 can make a great impact on campus. In 2014, Kenan co-founded Charleston-based KD Capital Management, an investment fund based on the original Buffett Partnership – and his expertise in business led him to become involved with the College’s School of Business investment program. To Kenan's delight, Mark Pyles, investment program director, had students reading The Intelligent Investor, the so-called Bible of value investing, written by Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett's teacher and greatest influence.

To further the study of value investing in the School of Business investment program, the Kenan family – working closely with Pyles – has created the Kenan Family Endowed Investment Program Award. In addition to positioning the investment program for growth, the award will enable the program’s student directors, known as the Kenan Value Investing Scholars, to participate in professional development experiences that will further their understanding of the value-investing philosophy. This will impact the entire program through shared knowledge, as well. The first Kenan Value Investing Scholar will be selected in fall 2016.

The goal was to secure 360 donors in 36 hours. With just minutes to spare, the goal was surpassed, with 370 donors showing their support for the College through gifts to the College of Charleston Fund. This inaugural program demonstrated to the incoming class that the College’s community of alumni, parents, faculty and staff is here for them from their very first day on campus. Be on the lookout for the second annual #CougarWelcome in August 2016! DONOR REPORT 2015 | 13

IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS RISING TO THE SWANSON CHALLENGE Steve ’89 and Emily Swanson ’89 have invested generously in the Honors College and other areas across campus since their graduation. Four years ago, they endowed the Swanson Family Scholarship, and the first cohort of 11 students will graduate from the College in May 2016. The future is promising for these scholars – in large part because of the investment the Swansons made in their education. In fact, four members of this group are semifinalists for Fulbright Scholarships, one is a Rotary Scholar and four are applying to top graduate schools. To help expand this kind of impact, the Swansons issued a challenge to inspire others to invest in endowed scholarships in the Honors College, either by supporting the Swanson Family Scholarship or by creating new endowed scholarship funds themselves. To recruit and retain the nation’s top students, the Swansons will match gifts to endowed scholarships in the Honors College dollar for dollar, up to $1 million. Through 2015, 14 fellow alumni, parents and friends have participated in the Swanson Challenge, which has raised more than $430,000 to be matched. Donors who have invested in the Swanson Challenge include Joey ’99 and Amy Foxhall, parents Judith Dunn and Paul Johnson, Kellen ’05 and Katherine Cooney ’05, Scott ’ 02 and Valerie Howell ’02, Ben ’02 and Sarah DeWolf ’02, Josh ’03 and Sarah Hays ’03, as well as Honors College Dean Trisha Folds-Bennett and her husband Brett Bennett. Additionally, CofC Foundation Board member Charles Mosteller ’81 and his family have established the Mosteller Family Scholarship (see page 17) under the Swanson Scholars umbrella. Plans are to continue this challenge to reach the $1 million goal the Swansons set by June 30, 2016. 16 | 2015 DONOR REPORT

A Place of Their Own: New Service Center for Veteran and Active Duty Students On Veterans Day 2015 the College of Charleston celebrated all veterans with the opening of its Veteran and Military Student Service Center. It was through a generous grant provided by America’s Warrior Partnership and Palmetto Warrior Connection that the College of Charleston was able to hire and train a veteran and military student services coordinator to integrate campus services for veterans and to help provide a seamless transition from active duty to college life. Creating an inclusive campus environment for potential veteran students to explore higher

With an emphasis on assimilating students into the academic setting and helping them work through personal post-combat struggles for overall individual success, the center provides peer networking, workshops and speaker series that address issues and opportunities specific to veteran and military students.

“Stanley and Charlot have been advocates for the Jewish Studies Program almost since its inception in 1985,” says Marty Perlmutter, director of the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program. “Their prominence in the community and their genuine commitment to things Jewish gave the program stature in its early stages, when the program was not yet fully embraced by either the College or the wider community. Their latest gift is special because of that long history and my very high regard for them.” The resources made available through the Stanley and Charlot Karesh Family Fund will help ensure that Jewish Studies programming at the College will continue to benefit students, scholars and the community at large. The College of Charleston is fortunate to have leaders like the Karesh family playing such a big part in creating its distinguished Jewish Studies Program.

SCHOLARSHIPS: COFC FUND SCHOLARSHIP (1 YEAR), HONORS COLLEGE DEAN’S EXCELLENCE FUND (2 YEARS) Growing up, Quinten Meadors could best be described as inquisitive. Always asking his mother how and why things worked eventually led Meadors to pursue a degree in biology at the College of Charleston. “Biology gives me the background knowledge and skills needed to further explore my childhood joy of theorizing and uncovering the operations of the world around me,“ he says. In the future, Meadors hopes to pursue a degree in emergency medicine and open his own clinic to make health care available in underserved and disadvantaged communities. With scholarships from unrestricted funds like the College of Charleston Fund and the Honors College Dean’s Excellence Fund, Meadors is on his way to reaching that dream. “Receiving these scholarships has alleviated much of the financial burden for my family and me. I know it will go a long way in aiding me in future pursuits,“ says Meadors, whose scholarships allowed him to leave the U.S. for the first time and complete biomedical research in Singapore. "I began participating in scientific lab research the first month I came to the College, but I never dreamed that my love for science would take me abroad!" o lege f cha ol

Stanley and Charlot Karesh have been pillars of the Charleston Jewish community and the community at large for many years. Stanley was the first – and, for many years, the only – life member of the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program Advisory Board, and the lobby in the Jewish Studies Center is named in honor of the Kareshes. After Stanley passed away in 2012, Charlot has continued the Karesh legacy of supporting and promoting Jewish causes and education.

Stanley and Charlot Karesh Family Fund Benefits Jewish Studies Long-term

Family ties are always pretty strong – especially when they’re connected to the College of Charleston. That’s one reason Charles Mosteller ’81 was so happy when his daughter Sarah chose the College for her undergraduate studies in art history and studio art.

As a member of the College of Charleston Foundation Board, a life member of the Alumni Association and the 2009–10 recipient of the Parents and Alumni Working With Students (PAWWS) Admissions Volunteer of the Year Award, Charles is a longtime advocate of his alma mater. And, when Sarah graduated in May 2015, Charles and his wife Alexa established the Mosteller Family Endowed Scholarship in her honor. “Alexa and I wanted to honor our daughter Sarah on her graduation and to establish a scholarship that would endure. We are passionate supporters and recruiters for the College and have a keen interest in the arts and sciences,” says Charles, who – after earning his degree in biology at the College – studied at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and now practices ophthalmic surgery in his hometown of Mobile, Ala. The Mosteller Family Endowed Scholarship is part of the Swanson Scholars program (see page16), and will help bring the best students from across the country to the College of Charleston.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND ACCOUNTING MAJOR SCHOLARSHIP: R. KEITH '90 & MELISSA G. SAULS '90 SCHOLARSHIP (4 YEARS) When her family moved to the Charleston area during her junior year of high school, Carissa Jenkins felt she was destined to go to the College of Charleston. It was love at first sight. “The moment I stepped onto the College of Charleston campus for my first tour was the moment I knew the College was perfect for me,” says Jenkins, noting that, ultimately, it came down to finances. “Luckily, the College of Charleston was able to offer me a scholarship, so my dream could come true!” Now a senior, Jenkins is still in love with the College, and – after graduation – she plans to stick around to pursue her master’s in accountancy at the Graduate School, University of Charleston, S.C. She hopes to earn her Certified Public Accounting license and would one day like to pay it forward. “I will always thank my donors for allowing me to make my dreams a reality,” she says. “I can’t even fathom where I would be today without the many opportunities I have had at the College, from the great professors and networking connections, to being a resident assistant. The College of Charleston has shaped me into the adult I am today.”

MCLEOD FRAMPTON SCHOLARSHIP APPROACHES 30 YEARS Since 1785, the Agricultural Society of South Carolina has worked to promote and improve agricultural and other rural concerns across South Carolina. Still active today, the society supports College of Charleston students through the McLeod Frampton Scholarship, which has been awarded to students with an interest in biology or other agricultural pursuits since 1986. More than 64 students have received a McLeod Frampton Scholarship, with many of these recipients receiving the same scholarship all four years. The fund was set up to honor the memory of William McLeod Frampton (1876–1960), a native of Charleston. He was a Sea Island cotton planter as well as a farmer of livestock and crops on James Island, and held many county, state and federal agricultural positions. He also served as secretary and treasurer (1917–1938), president (1938–1958) and president emeritus (1959) of the Agricultural Society of South Carolina. The current recipient of the McLeod Frampton Scholarship is Malcolm Kates ’16, a biology and international studies major in the Honors College. 18 | 2015 DONOR REPORT

“ My scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to focus not on the financial burden of college, but on the opportunities that the College of Charleston provides. From research to service to international travel, I feel like I have gotten the most out of my time here thanks to the continued support of the Agricultural Society of South Carolina.” – Malcolm Kates

Recognizing Faculty Excellence Belk Daughtridge and Ann Bacot understand the importance of strong academics and have been active supporters of the College of Charleston, even though they are not alumni. As a former member of the Cougar Club Board, Belk and his family created the Daughtridge Family Endowed Athletics Scholarship at the College in 2003. For further impact outside of Athletics, Belk and Ann recently initiated the Daughtridge Faculty Excellence Endowed Fund. This fund, which will provide support to high-achieving tenure-track faculty members, is one of the only faculty support funds started within the College of Charleston BOUNDLESS campaign. Belk and Ann believe that advancing the skill set of the faculty will make a lasting difference not only on the faculty recipients, but also on the students and the College as a whole.

MARCH MATCHNESS GARNERS ALUMNI SUPPORT TO COFC FUND In March 2015, Jeff Kinard ’77 challenged young alumni to join him in giving back to the College. The month-long challenge became known as March Matchness. “As our BOUNDLESS comprehensive campaign went public, I knew it was time for me to commit and make a significant gift to the College,” says Kinard. “I saw the best use, the most agile and flexible use, of my gift was the College of Charleston Fund. It is managed for the betterment of the entire College. Further, the College of Charleston Fund is the priority fund chosen by the Alumni Association and its board. After making that decision, I was hoping to make a gift that had some leverage and impact with new donors. Enter March Matchness.” o lege f cha ol

ICAT Launches Student Entrepreneurs The Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Technology (ICAT) is the first business accelerator in the history of the College. ICAT provides learning experiences for business, computer science and liberal arts/humanities students to accelerate entrepreneurial startups in technology. Supported by two mentors from the business and tech community, each team of three students selfaggregates and creates a globally scalable business that has a viable product and customers in 14 weeks. In doing so, students report a life-changing experience that teaches them persistence and resilience in the face of failing fast. ICAT had a successful launch in 2015 as three student cohorts (domestic and international)

completed their academic work, successfully pitched their products and demonstrated to the community that students with a variety of academic majors can successfully participate in entrepreneurship. ICAT alumni are now running their own companies, starting new ventures, joining existing startups and moving into graduate/professional schools. Generous philanthropic support received in 2015 from numerous alumni, friends of the College, corporations and foundations helped to fuel ICAT’s launch. Housed in the School of Business’ Center for Entrepreneurship, ICAT is a collaboration with the Office of Economic Development as well as many other campus partners.

jeff kinard '77 teams up with clyde the cougar for march matchness Kinard pledged up to $20,000 to the College of Charleston Fund if 126 young alumni donors made their first gift to the College through the College of Charleston Fund. In the end, 265 young alumni stepped forward. “We are very fortunate that the College has lots of non-alumni friends contributing and supporting the school. The time is now for us, the alumni, to take the lead – to be the leading group of donors at the College,” says Kinard. “We’re the ones who benefited from the College, and it’s our time to give our time, effort and money and be the leaders of this College. This is our alma mater. Let’s show the way.”

IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS Rare Piece of Charleston History Given to Avery Research Center Blaine Wimberly and her sister Anne Clark, both of New Mexico, gifted a rare, copper City of Charleston Free Badge to the College’s Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture. This is one of the only 10 known free badges in the world and is one of the finest examples to survive. From 1783 to 1789, the City of Charleston mandated that “every free negro, mulatto, or mestizo above the age of fifteen years” obtain and wear these badges to verify and demonstrate their “free” status. The census data collected by the United States in 1790

lists several hundred free people of color, but very few badges are known to remain today. Charleston was the only city in America to create and enforce such a law, and the relics are widely known (and collected) today. All the free badges have the word Free emblazoned on a liberty cap, along with the lettering City of Charleston counterclockwise inside the rim. The badge given to the Avery Research Center is the thickest badge recorded to date and has the crispest edge around the words City of Charleston of any examples known.

The Charleston free badge system ended in 1798, while the slave badge system continued through the Civil War. Because the badges were used for such a short period and for such a small population, this makes them incredibly rare. The copper free badges are not to be confused with their more common counterparts: the slave badges or tags that were instituted in Charleston for slave hiring (rather than freedom) in 1800. This unique piece of Charleston’s history opens a window to the world of free people of color – those of African descent, who either were born free or were freed by owners and will be a boon to researchers, visitors and scholars alike.

Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation Honored at Dedication “If the frail ecology of our planet is to survive, we must be guardians as well as gardeners.” So said John Henry Dick, who entrusted his beloved Dixie Plantation to the College of Charleston upon his death in 1995 – and so the College continues to protect and preserve Dixie Plantation as a living laboratory for environmental education, ecological research and historical discovery. Last December, the College opened two new field research stations at Dixie Plantation – a project made possible by many generous and progressive contributors, including the 20 | 2015 DONOR REPORT

Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation, which granted $1 million to match the College’s investment. The collective support from this public-private partnership and other forward-thinking partners helps advance Dixie’s mission of communicating the importance of conservation. Offering outdoor learning opportunities in ecological conservation, sustainability, South Carolina history and STEM education, Dixie Plantation continues to be an unmatched resource and refuge for observing and appreciating nature in all its splendor and complexity.

Chivalry Is Alive at CofC In May 2015, corporate lawyer and book collector Thomas M. Haythe arranged for his rare and valuable book collection to be given to the College of Charleston upon his death. Until then, he has generously loaned his remarkable collection to Special Collections.

lege of ch ol

Printed during the 15th and 16th centuries and written primarily in French, Haythe’s collection centers around the theme of chivalry, with texts describing stories of love, politics, humor and many other aspects of medieval life.

The Gerald and Beth Polis Scholarship During his four years as a student, Jerry Polis ’62 was a recipient of the S.S. Solomons Scholarship, which affords financial assistance to students of Jewish faith. Because of his deep affinity for his College of Charleston experience and his gratitude to the donor who supported him, Polis and his wife Beth created and endowed the Gerald and Beth Polis Scholarship. Their investment will help attract talented students of Jewish faith to the College and thrive as students, just as Polis did. “I am deeply grateful to the College for the quality education I received, as well as the meaningful social life I enjoyed during my four years as a student, both of which significantly prepared me for the challenges of life,” says Polis. “To now be able to provide financial assistance to others so that they, too, may enjoy a College of Charleston experience is extremely rewarding.” The first recipient of the Gerald and Beth Polis Scholarship will enter the College in fall 2016.

pages from the haythe collection

“These 500-year-old volumes, beautifully printed and bound and often illustrated with fine woodcuts, are a tangible example of Western civilization’s extraordinary success during the Renaissance in distributing our knowledge and our myths to a widening class of educated people,” says Haythe, a lifelong learner who has always enjoyed beautiful books and in recent years discovered rare books as works of art. It's his hope to provide students with the opportunity to discover a truly unique art form.

“These books are not just about medieval culture and history,” says Juliette Bourdier, professor of French and medieval studies, who has already integrated two of the books into her curriculum. “I plan to use this collection to challenge students’ perspectives of contemporary life. The books can help them understand what shapes how they see the world around them.”

NEW FUND HONORS LEGACY OF AWARD-WINNING JOURNALIST As a founding and lifetime member of the College of Charleston’s Department of Communication Advisory Board, John S. Palmer strived to connect the students’ experience in the classroom to practical application in the field. Palmer spent four decades in broadcast news, serving as the White House correspondent for NBC News, anchor for the Today show in New York, series host for the Discovery Channel and anchor of the Christian Science Monitor's daily news briefing. His career also had him involved with special events and television documentaries, commercial films and videos, and his achievements garnered him numerous awards, including a national Emmy. Palmer understood the importance of promoting the recognition and progress of communication instruction at the College. In honor of his incredible commitment and dedication to the communication program, the John Palmer Endowed Communication Award was created after he passed away in 2013. This award seeks to honor Palmer’s legacy by providing resources for experiential learning opportunities for students within the Department of Communication. Recipients will have opportunities to take part in high-level internships within the communication field, to study abroad, to attend and participate in professional conferences and to collaborate with faculty on research projects. This legacy award will help strengthen the next generation of communication professionals. The first recipient will be selected in fall 2016. DONOR REPORT 2015 | 21

Long declared one of the most magnificent avenues of oaks in the world, the majestic, tree-lined original entrance to the College's Dixie Plantation personifies the natural beauty that exists on the property. Some of the trees are believed to be 250–275 years old.

- LIVE OAK SOCIETY -

Taking its name from the majestic live oak trees that make the College’s campus so distinct, the Live Oak Society recognizes our most loyal donors (those who give consistently for five years or more and provide the roots of the College’s philanthropic foundation). Live Oak Society donors are leaders in making the College of Charleston a priority year after year, and their generosity continues to advance the mission of the College.

CLEAN ENERGY POWERS DIXIE

A generous contribution by Palmetto Clean Energy (PaCE) enabled the purchase and installation of solar panels on one of the College of Charleston’s new environmental research stations at Dixie Plantation, the College’s living learning laboratory on the Stono River. With its gift of $31,500, PaCE's investment will benefit students, faculty and the environment. In addition to the power they provide, the rooftop solar panels give students the opportunity to learn scientific methods with real time analysis in the field. The College’s aim is to grow relationships over time and find more ways to work together to enhance students’ educational experience and better the environment. PaCE’s contribution shows its commitment to the ecosystem and students’ understanding of the importance of alternative energy. The College is appreciative of both the educational opportunities and the power that PaCE has provided.

Paying It Forward With an Alumni Association Scholarship

Donna Florio ’74 demonstrated her trust in the College of Charleston and her belief in its educational mission with her planned gift for a CofC Alumni Association Scholarship. Florio, who graduated with a BA in English, now lives in Alabama and is in the home renovation business after a career as a food writer with Southern Living magazine. “When I was accepted at the College of Charleston in 1970, there were still a lot of huge hurdles ahead of me before I could make it to graduation,” says Florio, who had an Alumni Association Scholarship during college and also participated in a work-study program and accepted any casual work she could. “I was the only one who could leap the academic hurdle, but the financial one was going to require skills I didn’t possess. The alumni scholarship was the leg up that I needed.” Her scholarship helped pay for books and tuition, leaving her other income to cover rent, utilities, gas, clothes and food. Her college experiences led to a love of cooking that helped her start her first career in seafood marketing. Marketing led to a freelance career in food writing, which fueled her long career as a food writer. Peggy Watt and George P. Watt, Jr. Julia S. Webb and Richard O. Philanthropy in the Face of Tragedy Michael R. Bennett, founder and owner of Bennett Hospitality, was deeply affected by the tragic shooting in downtown Charleston’s “Mother” Emanuel A.M.E. Church on June 17, 2015. In honor of the victims of that tragedy, Bennett established the “Mother” Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church Endowed Scholarship. “I was so moved and inspired by the Mother Emanuel response to this tragedy that I wanted to do something,” says Bennett. “This is my small contribution in their honor.” Bennett is the founder and owner of Bennett Hospitality, which owns 16 hotels and 8 restaurants in four states: South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Montana. Growing up in Charleston, he worked hard to get where he is today. As a junior at the College, he opened his first business – Free Wheelin bicycle and moped rentals – and joined the CofC maintenance crew working on some Glebe Street renovations. After six months learning from the crewmembers – he sold his moped business and started buying and fixing up properties around Charleston. Still, he credits those men – men whose families were likely part of the Mother Emanuel community – for a lot of his success in his career. William Tennis Ana Uribe Helen Yochum Marcia Smoak Yochum 1996 and Henry M. Yochum III 1994 Judith Payne Watts Shelby Nicole Cody 2014

“I got so much from my experience with that crew. I owe a lot to them,” he says, adding that he hopes that the scholarship he’s endowed might go to a relative of one of those men he worked with on that crew. “For me, it’s come completely full circle, because I’m giving back to the people who educated me so well and launched my career.”

“ I encourage all those who were inspired by the grace and forgiveness of Mother Emanuel to contribute any amount to this scholarship. I can think of no better way to strengthen our community than to offer the exceptional academic resources available right here in the heart of Charleston.”

— Michael R. Bennett, founder and owner of Bennett Hospitality

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in fall 2016 and is open to any minority student from the Charleston peninsula.

Education Advocate Honored Born in Indiana in 1921, R.E. Davis had many challenges to overcome, but he did well in school and eventually became a WWII pilot at age 21, serving in Indochina with the Flying Tigers. After the war, he became a career officer in the Air Force and went to college and majored in business. He taught Junior ROTC at Rock Hill High School in Rock Hill, S.C., and it was his hope that his students might go on to college and find the kind of success he enjoyed. Believing that education is the best way to get ahead in life – that, and investing in stocks – Davis always helped his daughter, Susan Davis Trott, with her education, even when she wanted to give up. Trott, a Charleston painter whose subjects frequently include scenery from the historic city and the surrounding Lowcountry, created the R.E. Davis Scholarship in honor of her late father in October 2015. The first R.E. Davis Scholar will be chosen in fall 2016.
