Seniors Athletes Shine Dylan Zarrabi

Dylan Zarrabi completed his high school soccer career with numerous accomplishments. He was named to the All Region team and received All Region Offensive Player of the Year. Having played competitive soccer since he was six, it was very satisfying to finish his final season breaking two school records: the most number of goals scored in one game (6), and the most goals in his high school career (127)! The Joplin Globe named him area Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 8th. And last but not least, Dylan was named All State Honorable Mention. Dylan states, “Playing a team sport is awesome. I’ve developed friendships with kids in other grades I may not have known otherwise. I feel very blessed.” Dylan plans on attending Missouri State University and majoring in Business or Kinesiology. He is unsure about continuing soccer in college, but is considering walking on for the soccer program at MSU. Congratulations, Dylan on all your success!

Scott Lewis

Run, Scott, Run! Scott Lewis ran all the way to the Class 2 Cross Country State Meet in his final year at College Heights after finishing 15th in the District race. He earned Second Team All-Conference and was part of a team that was Conference Champions two years in a row. Scott, who has been running since fifth grade states, “I’m really glad I chose to run because of all the friendships I’ve made over the years – and all the ice cream runs that coach may or may not have known about.” Scott is in the National Guard and will be in the Officer Training program when he attends Missouri Southern State University next fall. He plans to major in Pre-med. Although Scott excelled at Cross Country, his real passion is for Track, so expect to see more great things from Scott next spring!

SOCCER

High School Soccer

by Coach Daniel Lewis

The soccer team had another great season. This was the fourth straight year that we were in the district finals and were the All District runner up team. We had multiple individual accomplishments including four athletes named to the Second Team All District: Ty Paige, Nathan Taylor, Sean Fogarty and Jon St. Clair. We also had four named to the First Team All District: Dylan Zarrabi, Ben Bishop, Brendyn Taylor and Jon Johnson. Brendyn Taylor and Dylan Zarrabi were selected to the All Region team where Brendyn garnered All Region Goalkeeper of the Year and Dylan received All Region Offensive Player of the Year. Dylan also broke two school records this year. He now has the most number of goals scored in one game when he scored six goals against Aurora, and he now has the school record for most goals in his HS career with 127. Dylan was named All State Honorable Mention, and Brendyn was named All State Goal Keeper of the Year.

Middle School Soccer

by Coach Evan Belk

What a great year for Middle School soccer! On the first day of practice we had 11 kids come out. The second day of practice we had more than 20 and we topped out over 25! My focus for this year was having fun, becoming a family, and most importantly playing for Christ. During practice we had a 4 vs. 4 league that was played throughout the course of the season during practice. Watching the kids grow together as a family was such an incredible scene. This team bought into the family atmosphere and it showed on the field. The league we played in is a travel team league that plays year round and they were tough and relentless. The leadership of our captains Lincoln Martin, Tucker Lang, and Kayleigh Teeter helped our intensity at practices. They brought a great attitude and led by example. We finished the year at 4-4. Coming out .500 in a league where we weren’t supposed to win a game is a testament to the kids and their will. The team averaged 3.1 goals per game and allowed 5.1. This stat is misleading to how great our defense played. In our four wins they allowed only 1.5 goals per game. Lincoln Martin led all scorers with 16 goals. Kayleigh Teeter also had a good year with five goals. Kennedy DeRuy put in two goals while Logan Bever and Grant Durling both had one. When it came to assists, Kennedy DuRuy led the team with four. Lincoln Martin, Kayleigh Teeter, Logan Bever, and Desi Hix all had one. Watching these kids grow on and off the field in so many different areas of life was the biggest gift. I cannot wait to see what God has in store.

Cross Country

Page 3

by Coach Phillip Jordan

The 2016 cross country season has come to a close. This season saw a total of 17 middle school and high school students join the cross country team, consisting of 14 boys and 3 girls. As the season progressed our athletes saw their times decrease, many athletes set personal bests toward the end of the year. We had a great group of athletes who were committed to working hard and giving their best. This season we had several athletes earn All-Conference recognition. James Calandro, DJ Painter, Nathan Hardy and Skyler Levendosky earned Honorable Mention All-Conference. Scott Lewis earned 2nd team All-Conference and Caleb Cummins and Jon Johnson earned 1st team All-Conference. Jon Johnson also was the Overall Conference Champion. On top of the individual accomplishments, the boys team earned the distinction of Overall Team Conference Champions for the second year in a row. Scott Lewis finished 15th at our district race earning All-District and a trip to the state meet in Jefferson City. Scott finished 105th out of 172 runners in the class 2 State Meet. Overall, we had a great season! We will miss our seniors and are looking forward to the 2017 season!

CROSS COUNTRY

Elementary Cross Country had 55 3rd-6th grade runners compete in a one-mile race. College Heights hosted the elementary Cross Country team from Southwest Washburn. It was a great day!

VOLLEYBALL

High School Volleyball

by Coach Eric Lang

The 2016 volleyball season was full of change, progress, and potential. Having a new coach move to town the day before the season began was not ideal, but that started the season off in a fashion of change that continued throughout the year. Over the course of the season, six of the 18 players missed time due to injury. Shifting lineups, due to those injuries, continued our season of change all the way to our final match in districts. While the team would have loved more continuity, change did bring about perseverance that ended with great strides of progress. After starting the season slowly, the varsity ended their year 15-16. JV ended the year 124, with a strong showing all year. Two of our players were named to the All-Conference Team: Navy Thompson, 1st team, and Kylee Friend, 2nd team. Additionally, All District selections were Navy Thompson, 1st team, and Taylor Ross, 2nd team. While the year was full of change and progress, the off season leaves us knowing how much potential we carry into next year. The growth that took place over the season, added to the fact that we will lose no seniors, has Cougar volleyball anxious to take on our opponents in 2017.

Middle School Girls Volleyball

by Coach Taylor Williams

As a first year teacher and coach, I never thought that a group of 7th & 8th grade girls could make me smile, laugh, and cry tears of joy and love as much as these girls did. Most of the time they were teaching me, rather than the other way around. The A Team had an amazing season. For regular season games, they had nine wins and one loss. They won first place in the McDonald County Tournament, and second place in the Spring River Valley Conference Tournament. Even though the girls are blessed with incredible athletic talent, the overall chemistry of the team is what really helped them win games. Our B Team showed tremendous improvement throughout the entire season. They really learned to work together as a team. Our serving percentage really grew towards the end of the season. With twenty girls being on the team, they knew they would not get to play every game since only six can be on the court at a time. They showed patience and understanding. Overall, I was extremely impressed with both the A and B team. I think the most important part of this experience for the girls was that they had fun and they made lifelong relationships with their teammates.

TENNIS

Tennis

by Coach Scott Yount

The 2016 girls’ tennis team had a great season. It didn’t take long for the team to build chemistry, and it just got better and better as the season progressed. We were seeded third for team districts, and we had two doubles teams place at individual districts. Kenlee Jonas and Annie Secker placed third, and Mary Adcock and Peri Reagan placed fourth. Kenlee Jonas was our only senior. She always played with strong intensity and an incredible heart. The entire team made great strides in skill level, proving to every other team in our district that College Heights may be fun to play but we are also hard to beat. To God be the glory for all of this! After all, it just wouldn’t be characteristic of our team if we didn’t direct praise to Him. As we say before every match: God gets the glory if we win; God gets the glory if we lose. Lord willing, we will have an even greater season next year.

Fall Pep Rally Each season the cheerleaders do a wonderful job not only cheering on the various sports through cheers and special routines, but also spending numerous hours making posters, both large and small, to encourage our athletes. They also plan our pep rallies. For the fall pep rally, they organized a competition to see who could “wrap the teacher with a roll of toilet paper the fastest. Can you tell who won?
