CHCS Science Fair More than 40 students participated in the 15th Annual Science and Engineering Fair. Many of the projects were inspired by artist Rube Goldberg. This year’s goal was to turn off a light bulb in 2 minutes by using everyday items in a series of action transfers. The school’s physics students judged the project on timing, smoothness, and creativity. “Rube Goldbergs really bring out a lot of creativity. It’s really been a blast to watch how much the kids get into the projects and how they challenge one another and come up with really unique ideas,” says science instructor Jean Miller.

Open House Our Annual Open House event was a great success. This event held in conjunction with the Science and Engineering Fair, hosted more than 20 visiting families. Potential students got to experience the book fair, science fair and solo and choral ensembles as well as visit classrooms and speak with teachers. Thanks everyone that helped make this event a success. Scheduling courses for the upcoming school year is always an exciting COLLEGE CORNER time. This process for the 2013-2014 school year is well under way. Students and parents have been meeting with Mrs. Kruse trying to figure out the best course selections for their college goals. The first step began with Mrs. Kruse making a classroom visit with each grade 8th through 11th. General explanations along with an enrollment forms were given to every student at that time. Students were instructed to take the forms home to review with their parents then schedule an appointment with her before making their final course selections. Mrs. Kruse prefers to meet with each student and his/her parents every spring so information about college and career goals can be shared. There is a clipboard with available appointment times in the guidance office where students can sign up for a conference. Parents may also call Mrs. Wilkins at extension 236 or Mrs. Kruse at extension 235 to schedule appointments by phone. It is important to note that these yearly meetings are strongly encouraged. Every effort is made to honor the student’s course requests. However, there are times when this is not possible. Classes have to be balanced in size and requirements must be met.
