COLLEGE CORNER

Seniors should have completed their college applications and requested transcripts to be sent to any of the colleges or universities in which they are interested in attending next fall. Each institution sets its own cutoff dates so attention needs to be directed toward scholarship deadlines for all schools in which they may be interested. Students are encouraged to be sure they make a college campus visit to any college they are seriously considering attending. Contact with the financial aid office can possibly lead to additional financial assistance. FAFSAs can be filed any time after January 1, 2014 and will be based on the parent’s 2013 tax information. Missouri Southern is hosting a FAFSA frenzy event on Sunday, March 2, 2014, 2:00-4:00 pm. All parents and students are invited to attend. It is NOT only for MSSU students. Southern is a national site for FAFSA workshops and have set the date in March to allow additional time for parents to collect and prepare their tax information. Students need to be diligent about filing their FAFSA forms by April 1st which is the Missouri cutoff date for state monies. Reminder: The College Heights Scholarship file cabinet is open for parents and students. Start at the school web site at collegeheights.org then go to the Guidance Center then Scholarships where there is a choice of the following tabs 1) Scholarship Searches, 2) Financial Aid, 3) Programs and Contests, 4) Local, 5) College and Universities, and 6) National & Corporate. Note: All the scholarships of which we are aware are listed in green print. As confirmation of their activation for the current year is made, they are changed to black print. We believe it is advantageous for students to know when certain scholarships become available each year so they can anticipate and prepare for them in advance.

SEE YOU AT THE POLE Global Day of Student Prayer

Page 3

Middle School & Bright Futures

In 1990, after prayer in public school was banned, many students began meeting at the flag pole of their schools to pray, sing praises to God and read scripture. Although some schools have attempted to deny their students the rights to this world wide day of prayer, many lawyers have fought to prove that it is their right to free speech to stand under a flag pole on public school property and pray to God. On September 25th, CHCS students met under the flag pole, in conjunction with millions of other students around the world. Students led times of group prayer, individual prayer, singing and reading the Bible. The CHCS Middle School Student Council hosted a Back to School Bash and asked students to bring juice boxes or granola bars for Joplin’s Bright Futures Program. More than 100 students participated and brought over 300 of each item. The middle school executive council delivered the items to Bright Futures during September.

A NOTE FROM SUPERINTENDENT NELSON HORTON…

On October 16th and 17th, College Heights Christian School had the privilege of being a satellink site for the annual Association of Christian Schools’ teacher in-service event, NEXUS LIVE. This celebratory learning experience for Christian educators was broadcast from a live location in Ohio, to multiple sites and over 14,000 participants around the world. One of two sites in Missouri, CHCS hosted approximately 65 educators, including our own faculty, and teachers from three other Christian schools. The theme “Empowered”, taken from Ephesians 3:16, was developed through a great selection of presenters on such topics as: What Great Teachers Do Differently, Worldview Teaching That Transforms Lives, Reaching and Teaching All Students, and Professional Development Is a Process not an Event. The new president of ACSI, Don Egeler, delivered the opening challenge entitled, “Carpe Aeternitatem: Why Settle for Just a Day?” His message was a powerful reminder that Christian school educators serve from an eternal perspective. This was a great opportunity for our faculty to be encouraged and reminded of the global nature and eternal importance of their ministry.

Thanksgiving Food Drive The CHCS High School Student Council will be sponsoring their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in November. The dates for collection are November 18th - 26th for nonperishable food items. Refrigerated items will be collected on the 26th. The students will challenge the faculty to see who can collect more items and there will be class competitions for elementary, middle and high school. Look for the banana suit to reappear this year!

Third Grade Dictionaries CHCS 3rd graders were recipients of new dictionaries today from area Rotarians. Four Rotarians shared the story of Rotary & why they have this annual tradition to gift dictionaries to every 3rd grader in the area.

Renweb Parents, don’t forget to take advantage of Renweb, our online school management system. You can check homework assignments, lunch menus, student grades, school calendar, etc. If you are having problems accessing Renweb or have not set up your account, please contact the school. A Renweb phone application is now available. This is a great tool to use to stay informed about your students progress.

CHCS Annual Fall Blood Drive November 13th will be the date for the CHCS annual fall Blood Drive and is sponsored by the NHS (National Honor Society). Blood donations can be made that day by coming to the CHCS Atrium between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm.
