Summer Highlights NATIONAL HISTORY DAY

GRACE CARTER (freshman) had the great honor of representing Missouri at National History Day in Washington DC after winning at the local and state levels with her Junior Individual Documentary, “Philip Johnston and the Navajo Code Talkers”. Grace was asked to give a presentation to the greater Kansas City area teachers on how to prepare for History Day. She will give her presentation in October. Way to go, Grace!

LEADERSHIP IN PRACTICE

This summer CHCS students NATHAN HARDY, WILL SECKER, SAM SPAULDING, and JALYN HUNTZICKER, joined more than 100 high school students who were selected as future leaders from schools across the state to attend the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Leadership in Practice program. Leadership in Practice is designed to provide young Missourians with the opportunity to learn what it takes to be an effective leader in their schools and communities. All participants were students between their freshman and sophomore years in high school. With help from Missouri business leaders and educators, the students learned firsthand about how to successfully work together as a team and individually as a leader. The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry applauds the efforts of these future leaders and the potential they bring to our state.

MISSOURI SCHOLARS ACADEMY

DANIEL ESTEP (junior) was selected to participate in the Missouri Scholars Academy, as one of only 330 students in the state of Missouri. The three-week academy was held on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia in June. The program is designed to be an enriching educational experience.

BOYS STATE

MATT GAO and MYLES JACKSON (seniors) were chosen to participate in the American Legion Boys State of Missouri in June. They were selected based on their leadership, citizenship, academics, and character during their junior year. The program is designed to educate and train young leaders in functional citizenship, leadership, and government, while setting up a mock government including elected officials on the local and state level.

HISTORY TRIP

This summer, ten middle school history students from College Heights Christian School, along with their sponsor, MRS. NANCY OHMART, spent an exciting week on an enticing and educational trip in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. They were intrigued by the many artifacts they were able to see at the Smithsonian Museums, along with sampling food at the National Museum of the American Indian. They were able to envision and experience Colonial American Life while visiting Williamsburg and Jamestown. Also, students were enthralled by the home plantations of our Founding Fathers at Mount Vernon and Monticello. The trip was truly a lifechanging experience for both students and adult sponsors; CHCS is excited to offer the experience to the students!

God’s at Work Here by Nelson Horton, Superintendent Several years ago our church was involved in a building campaign with a challenging financial goal. Although the immediate objective was to fund a new building addition to accommodate the growing attendance, the ultimate goal was to see more people come to Christ. I remember the theme that was repeated by those who gave video testimony of what our church family meant to them, and why we needed to make more room for new folks. At the close of each video clip, the words, “God’s at work here” were spoken. Those are the words that come to my mind today as I reflect on the start of another school year at CHCS. “God’s at work here!” The fact that God’s at work here shouldn’t be surprising, since it is His school, not ours. Nonetheless, His work, His ways, and His faithfulness never cease to amaze me! The words we sometimes sing in worship service, “I stand in awe of you” come to mind when I think of the enthusiastic, gifted and committed faculty and staff team members He has called together for the 2016-17 school year! We prayed for His guidance and I am convinced that each one, whether new to our team or returning faculty and staff members, were praying for His will also before they signed on. Those prayers have been answered so clearly! In the same way, we try to tell each family who sits for an admissions interview that our prayer is for the Lord to direct those students and families to CHCS who He wants to be here. Over 100 of our students are new this fall, representing 49 families! These students have been welcomed warmly by their veteran classmates and seem to be settling into the CHCS family quickly. We desire that each one will be blessed for being here and will in turn be a blessing to our school family. This new school year is off to a great start! None of us know what the year holds, but we do know who holds the future and that He will be working with us and in us, to the extent we allow Him to, throughout the year. I’m expectantly waiting to find out what His good pleasure is for our CHCS family this year! Will you join your prayers with mine as we ask for His will to be done in our school?

“For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” –PHILIPPIANS 2:13 (NASV)

A Word from our Counselor… by Patty Kruse, Guidance Counselor The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to make sure plans beyond high school are starting to come together. For seniors, this is especially true. They should have their college choices narrowed down to the schools they are seriously considering, usually two to three. Any senior who has not previously taken the ACT needs to sign up ASAP at www.actstudent.org/start. They need to be sure to include our school code number which is 261-578. This assures that the results will be sent back to College Heights and placed on their transcript. They should also have their resume in at least rough draft form. I am happy to assist with organization and tips on resume presentations. For all high school students, parents and students should plan to attend the Regional College Fair on October 12th, at the Leggett and Platt Field House on the MSSU Campus from 5:30–7:00. It is a great opportunity to get information on a large number of different schools in a short period of time. Speaking of colleges, College Heights also invites a number of colleges, universities and technology schools to visit our campus during lunch. We encourage our students and their parents to take advantage of these opportunities to see what is available and possibly schedule follow up visits to the campuses. Students should always make campus visits to any schools they are seriously considering. The renweb calendar is up to date with this fall’s line up. We are adding schools frequently, so be sure to check often for the latest information. In addition, emails will be sent out to parents, and announcements will be made for students to sign up for the lunch visits of regional colleges and universities scheduled to come to CHCS. Finally, a word about standardized testing: October 19th is the major test day for high school students in grades 9-11. Freshmen and Sophomores will be taking the Aspire 9 and 10. Ninth and tenth graders who usually test very well should sign up to take the PSAT on the October 19th test date and make up the appropriate ASPIRE on Wednesday, October 26th. There is a fee of $20 for the PSAT. Juniors will be taking the PSAT or Practice ACT. Juniors who are high testers and interested in National Merit should sign up to take the PSAT. Seniors are encouraged to use the day for a college visit. Seniors are allowed two college visits as excused absences (not including test day). There is a lot to think about and plan for during the high school years. I am available to assist you in any way I can. Please don’t hesitate to call, email, or stop by!

Team Natalie! The first day of school always brings out excitement and a few butterflies in students and staff. This year, one student was extra grateful to begin a new year. NATALIE GREER, fourth grader, was in a serious accident over the summer and escaped with her life. However, she lost part of one leg. To honor her, students were invited to wear “Team Natalie” blue t-shirts on the first day of school. What an encouraging sight to see our halls flooded with a sea of blue on that first morning! Natalie, who is in Mrs. Anderegg’s class, is adjusting well to her new routines with the help of her family, friends, and classmates.
