Missions Week at CHCS
C H R I S T I A N
by Sonya Wilkins
I love Missions Week at College Heights! It is a special time of year that our whole student body can be united through involvement and prayer support. This year our 9th-12th graders served in many and varied ways. Upperclassmen traveled to Jamaica, Mexico, and Beverly, KY (“Red Bird Mission”). Sophomores served at Cookson Hills Christian Children’s Home located in Kansas, OK. Freshmen were challenged to service at Ozark, AR and received training from the Youth With a Mission organization. The groups that traveled did everything from scrub toilets to share the Love of Jesus through drama, puppets, and the spoken word. Some students opted to stay right in town and serve in local groups. Those groups this year were Crosslines, Creative Expressions, Hispanic Outreach, Life House, Spring River, and Watered Gardens. Students worked hard – in both practical and spiritual ways – serving the Lord. Some painted, some cleaned, some visited the elderly, some taught children. We pray all were a blessing to those they encountered and in turn, were blessed as well. Middle School students have their very own service opportunities as well. After finishing their standardized tests on Monday and Tuesday, 6th graders cleaned up Cunningham Park in Joplin, and 7th & 8th graders worked at Maranatha Bible Camp helping prepare for the upcoming camp season. In addition, Middle School students encouraged the High School by giving each one a personalized journal for them to record their prayers and experiences in throughout the week. Elementary students love to be involved too! Each preschool through fifth grade student (as well as teachers and staff) received a prayer card displaying a specific high school student’s picture and the group they were serving with, along with suggested prayer points. We asked each one to pray for their specific student. They also showed support by donating muchneeded items to help the groups serve better in their specific projects (food, craft items, candy, hygienic supplies, etc.). Each year we have a theme verse. This year we chose Galatians 6:2, “Carry each other’s burdens…” That is our desire for Missions Week in a nutshell! We wish to show people God’s love, not just during this one special week, but every day of the year!

GRAMMY NOMINATION Band Instructor, MR. TODD JOHNSON, has been nominated for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award. Mr. Johnson will be evaluated on how he is making a measurable difference in the lives of students, contributions in the field of music education, and making a significant impact on their school and community. Congratulations on your nomination Mr. Johnson!!! Thank you for your 26 years of service at CHCS!
The Academic Awards Program is scheduled for May 9th in the Theater Studio starting at 6:30. COLLEGE CORNER Preparation for the evening is in full swing and requires massive coordination of information. Senior and Senior Parents need to “Save the Date” and be sure all college entrance and scholarship acceptance information has been shared with the guidance office as soon as possible. Parents, be sure your senior has officially notified their college or university of their acceptance of offered scholarships. It is imperative that acceptance be confirmed. Underclassmen should be documenting and keeping track of all of their activities in the school setting and out in the community. Be sure that there is a balance of activities and as much leadership as possible. This information will be easier to compile for resume, college selection and scholarship purposes down the road. Please contact Mrs. Kruse in the guidance office if you would like to discuss this in more detail.
Spring 2013 Blood Drive
Second Grade Reading Celebration
Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, more than 44,000 donations are needed daily to keep up with the current needs. A BIG Thank you goes out to everyone who helped with the NHS spring blood drive this year – And a SPECIAL THANK YOU to all those who donated blood.
Wellness Week CHCS students enjoyed an all school chapel that kicked off Wellness Week (April 8-12). Students and staff were challenged to take good care of the bodies which the Creator has given to them. Coach Jordan asked students to seriously consider six areas of improvement: exercise 30 minutes each day, eat healthy foods, sleep 8 hours each night, eat a healthy breakfast, journal activity and food each day, and give up tv/video games for the week. Elementary started a running club, which rewards students for taking their normal recess time and running or walking instead. In addition, time was set aside in the gym each morning for students to join Coach Jordan for exercise opportunities. Encouraging students to think about all elements of wellness, not just exercise and diet. ECFA ACCREDITED – On November 12, 2012, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability announced the accreditation of College Heights Christian School. Accreditation is based on the ECFA’s Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship, including financial accountability, transparency, sound board governance, and ethical fundraising. When an organization is accredited by ECFA, it demonstrates its willingness to follow the model of biblical accountability.
MISSION STATEMENT
Second grade teachers (Blankenship, Limkeman) challenged each of their students to reach a goal of reading 550 minutes in one month. The students reached that goal with several exceeding it!! To celebrate their achievement Maccaroo Gym provided four inflatables for the students to enjoy, they went to the mall for lunch, and returned to school in the afternoon for a movie. Way to go second grade!!!!
A Special Visitor! Elementary students celebrated Clifford’s birthday during spring reading night by making Clifford masks, having cupcakes and watching a Clifford movie. Clifford (Harrison Cooke, 11th grade) visited with the kids while they enjoyed their snacks. Parents and students also spent some time shopping at the CHCS book fair.
CHCS glorifies God through excellence as a Christ-centered learning environment that produces servant-leaders with a Biblical worldview.
