Grandparents Day Students and staff spent many hours preparing for our annual Grandparents Day at CHCS. Grandparents of Pre-School through 5th grade students enjoyed a breakfast and a special all school chapel with their grandchildren. We had so many grandparents that we had to expand breakfast into the atrium. After Chapel, students and grandparents headed to classrooms to show off what the students have been doing all year and to read essays written by their grandchildren. Approximately 550 grandparents were hosted by the elementary school this year. Thank you grandparents, for being a part of the CHCS family and your grandchildren’s Christian education.

Junior-Senior Banquet The High School Juniors hosted a formal banquet event for our Seniors on April 5th. The theme was Fire and Ice. After an evening of dinner and dancing, the students loaded chartered buses for ice skating in Springfield.
Spring Fling Our cafeteria staff goes all out to treat our Middle School and High School students to a special lunch once a year. Every student enjoyed the grilled burgers and treat bags.

Nancy Ohmart GOLDEN APPLE WINNER Congratulations to Mrs. Nancy Ohmart, Middle School History Instructor for receiving the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Award. She was recognized for her outstanding teaching in the 6th - 8th grade division during a banquet held at MSSU. Mrs. Ohmart has taught at CHCS since 1985. Anyone who has had her in class or is a parent of one of her students knows how remarkable her teaching style is in the classroom. Additionally, Mrs. Ohmart goes beyond the classroom and enjoys setting up numerous out of classroom activities for the entire Middle School. Nancy graduated from Missouri Southern State College in 1985. She and her husband Gary have three daughters, all CHCS graduates and two beautiful granddaughters. Mrs. Ohmart is actively involved and attends College Heights Christian Church.
College Heights Christian School is proud of you Mrs. Ohmart and thank you for having such a servant’s heart towards our students!
Art Fair The CHCS Art & Literature Fair filled the hallways with art and written pieces from both Middle School and High School students. The fair showcased some inspiring pieces. The talent of our students is truly amazing. Elementary art was also on display - even our youngest students are quite the artists. Mrs. Tracy Nichols, our high school art teacher will be leaving us this year to open an art studio. We will miss the artistic influence she has on our middle and high school students. We pray God’s blessings on her new adventure.

MARS Trip Nineteen of our High School Science students traveled to Arizona to work with Arizona State University at the NASA Mars Space Flight Facility. One of their first stops was at the Grand Canyon. The team is also pictured in front of a model of Opportunity, one of the rovers on Mars.

Foreign Language Field Day at MSSU is a fun chance for students to put their nearly learned language skills to use!! The program allows students to interact with other Foreign Language Students from across the four-state area; this year there were 34 schools enrolled. There is both a competitive side and a non-competitive (learning/activity) side to FLFD. Competitive events include Vocabulary Recognition test, Reading Comprehention test, Skits, Geography and Culture tests, and Poetry Reading. Non-competitive events were Conversation Stations, Cultural Dance, and Cultural Trivia. In the non-competitive events, “eruos” are given for participating and you can cash them in at the prize kiosk to earn unique gifts (a sombrero, Spanish bookmarks, Mexican painted toys and sourvenirs, etc.) Events are held in three languages: Spanish, German, and French and at four different levels. Our students from CHCS competed in Vocabulary Recognition and Reading Comprehension tests. (see our results below) at three levels: Spanish I, Spanish II, and Spanish III. All students attending also practiced speaking and conversing with native or advanced level Spanish speakers in the Conversation Stations and learned about Latin American music and dances by presentations from a group of high school students from Springfield, MO who studied the different cultural dances of the region. All of our students enjoyed the day and the chance to put their new Spanish skills into practice. I was especially pleased to see the following: Spanish I – Vocabulary Recognition, 4th place, Lijah Sparlin Spanish I – Reading Comprehension, 4th place, Nevada Moenning Spanish II – Vocabulary Recognition, 4th place, Kenlee Jonas Spanish II – Reading Comprehension, 5th place, Dawsen Worthington Spanish III – Vocabulary Recognition, 3rd place, Matthew Gao Spanish III – Reading Comprehension, 5th place, Michaela Keene We are so proud of their hard work, and are already making plans for next year and hope to compete in several other areas!!
MSSU Honors Program CHCS Seniors Annie White, Courtney Byrne, and Hannah Fuller joined the honors program at Missouri Southern State University during the Honors Program Signing Ceremony on April 23rd. Congratulations ladies! We are proud of you!

MS History Fiesta The sixth grade History Class enjoyed a Fiesta Day. The History students’ cumulative learning experience over their History unit on Mexico was to make a Pinata and have a Fiesta. Thank you parents for help making this a fantastic success for the 6th graders!
Blood Drive The National Honor Society at CHCS sponsored a Blood Drive on April 9th. NHS set a goal to collect 60 units of blood. They exceeded that goal by 9 units. Thanks to everyone that helped to support this effort.

History Students visit OKC
MS Humanities Scholars Bowl
The CHCS Honors US History class had a great field trip to the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum. The site is a memorial to the victims of the Murrah Federal Building bombing of 1995.
This week CHCS hosted the Middle School Humanities Scholars Bowl Competition. The MS Varsity Scholars Bowl Team took 1st place and was undefeated in Humanities. They also ended in 1st place in the Spring River Valley Conference and 3rd Place in the Southwest Missouri Academic Bowl for the year. HS Scholar Bowl District Champs Big round of applause to our District Scholar’s Bowl Champions: Brad Copeland, Ashley Roberts, Kolleen Gladden, Ethan Bolte, Rachel Laws, Devon Russell, Matthew Estep, and Michaela Keele. Way to go College Heights Christian High School!
MS Music Ensembles On April 3rd, the middle school students traveled to NEO A&M College to participate in the music festival in Miami, Oklahoma. Both ensembles and a solo received one ratings. We are looking forward to many more performances from this group in the future.

A NOTE FROM SUPERINTENDENT NELSON HORTON… The evidence of God’s grace and favor permeates our school? Again this year He has blessed the students, staff and families of CHCS to make this place exceptional. For our school to maintain excellence we must nurture a learning community that glorifies God. There are no shortcuts. To enjoy this Christ-centered environment highlighted in our mission statement is a high goal, but it is attainable when the fruit of the Holy Spirit is maturing within the each of us. If discord, chaos, disorganization, sloppiness, or any other negative trait becomes prevalent in a school, all we have to do is review the list of the Spirit’s fruit in Galatians 5:22-23 to find that at least one is missing from the basket. When the basket is full, God will be glorified and excellence will be the norm. “…The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control...”

The Academic Awards Program is COLLEGE CORNER scheduled for May 15th in the Theater Studio starting at 6:30. Preparation for the evening is in full swing and requires massive coordination of information. Senior and Senior Parents need to “Save the Date” and be sure all college entrance and scholarship acceptance information has been shared with the guidance office as soon as possible. Parents, be sure your senior has officially notified their college or university of their acceptance of offered scholarships. It is imperative that acceptance be confirmed. Underclassmen should be documenting and keeping track of all of their activities in the school setting and out in the community. Be sure that there is a balance of activities and as much leadership as possible. This information will be easier to compile for resume, college selection and scholarship purposes down the road. Please contact Mrs. Kruse in the guidance office if you would like to discuss this in more detail.
Renweb Parents, don’t forget to take advantage of Renweb, our online school management system. You can check homework assignments, lunch menus, student grades, school calendar, etc. If you are having problems accessing Renweb or have not set up your account, please contact the school. A Renweb phone application is now available. This is a great tool to use to stay informed about your students’ progress.
ECFA ACCREDITED – On November 12, 2012, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability announced the accreditation of College
Heights Christian School. Accreditation is based on the ECFA’s Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship, including financial accountability, transparency, sound board governance, and ethical fundraising. When an organization is accredited by ECFA, it demonstrates its willingness to follow the model of biblical accountability.
