CHRISTIAN CHURCH

I want to speak to those of you who may be new to College Heights. We hope that your life in this church family leads to a wonderful encounter with the living God. Whether you are new to seeing the face of God in your life, or someone who has known Him for years, either way, we are convinced that God is active and will meet you in the people, the prayers, the ministries, the studying, and the life of this body of believers. God is still advancing His Kingdom in our lives and this community. If we can help you get connected, we want to do so. You are welcome to call any minister or ministry leader as your beginning place or visit our website, chjoplin.org, to get started. Additionally, on any Sunday morning there is a room called The Connecting Place, just off the main Atrium of our Worship Center, where people are prepared to sit and visit with you; they would love to help get you started. May God meet you today and may He be gracious to you in all that you do today. Randy Gariss Preaching Minister

CHILDREN

LAUNCHPAD (GRADES 1-5) At LaunchPad, we want kids to • love coming to church. • connect with friends and leaders. • see God’s big story and how they fit into it. • walk away with practical ways to live out what they have studied. Sunday In LaunchPad grades 1–5 develop a solid Christian foundation. Our tagline—play hard. sing loud. love God.—describes what we do every week. We play thrilling games, worship with an amazing band, and learn about our AWESOME God by studying the Bible in large and small group settings. At 9:15 AM LaunchPad meets in the Chapel for big group fun before heading to Bible School classes. At 11:00 AM we stay in the Chapel for games, songs, engaging lessons, and small group times. During this hour our kids in grade 5 head off to Advanced Training where they explore what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus.

Wednesday LAUNCHPAD At 7:00 PM, LaunchPad takes a hands-on approach to reinforce the lessons we studied on Sunday. Through games, activities, and science experiments, kids see tangible examples of biblical principles. • •

CURRICULUM UPDATE

YOUTH CREATIVE TEAM 6:00 PM, K121 During the school year, kids in grades 3 through high school can participate in Youth Creative Team. Kids are given opportunity to bless various ministries within our church by using their talents through art, drama, puppets, and our newly formed Youth Orchestra.

We are writing our own 4-year curriculum that takes us chronologically through the Bible each year, while focusing on different stories each year. We start every school year at creation, talk about the birth of Christ around Christmas, and spend the spring working our way through the New Testament.

KIDS CHOIR 7:00 PM, Fellowship Hall Kids in grades 1–5 have the opportunity to worship God and use the talents He has given them through drama and music in Kids Choir. The choir will present their Christmas musical on Sunday, December 7, at 6:00 PM in the Chapel.

We have just completed our first full year and the kids and parents are loving it. Thanks so much to the wonderful group of volunteers that are helping to make this happen. (Let us know if you would like to be a contributor!)

STUDENTS At QUAKE we want each student to be able to answer three questions: • • •

Who am I? Finding truth in confusing times. Where do I belong? We were designed for a relationship with God and with each other. What am I supposed to do? I live to bring God joy and to serve as His heart, hands, and feet.

QUAKE is a fun environment where high school students hang out and spend time playing, worshipping, and listening to a message of truth from God’s Word. Not every week looks exactly the same, but will always be full of music, fun, laughter, inspirational challenges, and people who genuinely care about students. At QUAKE, students are challenged to make a difference in the world and use God’s Word as a springboard to empower them. SUNDAY 9:30 AM

We believe that kids in grades 6–8 are ready to deeply engage their faith and beliefs. We use specifically designed programming, teaching, games, and mentorship to help direct middle schoolers’ rapidly developing minds toward Jesus. Our goal is for middle schoolers to have a transformational understanding of and belief in the gospel. We want to engage their hearts with the truth of Jesus, and proactively help them answer the “Why?” of their beliefs. SUNDAY 9:15 AM

College Heights Christian School was founded in 1978 by the elders and ministers at College Heights and has grown to approximately 600 students from preschool to 12th grade. The school follows a challenging college preparatory curriculum which lays the foundation for graduates to become successful business and community leaders. The component that pushes it over the top is that the school is a place of ministry where children are simultaneously surrounded by the Word of God in a Christian environment while preparing for success in the world.

Join us for the

COLLEGE HEIGHTS COUGAR CARNIVAL October 4 11:00 AM–2:30 PM

Many students come to know the Lord more deeply because they are in this environment, and then go out as salt and light in their own communities and beyond. In essence, the school has become not only a ministry to children, but also a launch site for service ministry. Students represent over 90 different area churches, with the largest number coming from the College Heights Christian Church family at approximately 29% of the school’s total. Over 800 students have graduated from CHCS in the past 35 years. College Heights Christian School is accredited by the North Central Association and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International. For more information about this exciting ministry or to enroll your student call the school at 417.782.4114 x201 or visit their website at collegeheights.org.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR Learning to Love Your Neighbor Class 7:00 PM on Wednesdays August 27— September 24

This life with Jesus is a journey not a destination. So when it comes to loving our neighbors, we will keep learning and relearning to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Together we will learn:

Room L106 Led by Jay St. Clair, Community Outreach Minister

Testimonials from others who have taken this class:

Who is our neighbor and the accompanying challenges of time and fears we face in loving them.

Practical help going from stranger to relationship with your neighbors and some proven ways God can build those relationships. He will take us on some baby steps to get to that point.

We will look at our motives for loving our neighbors. The last thing our neighbors need is to feel like a project and a part of a program. We will learn to be receivers as well as givers to our neighbors!

All healthy relationships have healthy boundaries and how that applies concerning our neighbors.

Neighboring is definitely not a solo sport so how can we do this without feeling alone.

“I love all the Scripture. Very encouraging to be released from the guilt of not doing enough.” “The teaching on boundaries helped me the most. God does know us and has given us a simple way to be a part of his great work.” “Before this class, I felt really intimidated by how to love my neighbors, but now I feel more equipped and more ready to pray and respond to God’s will in this. Thanks so much!” “It was so helpful! Awesome! I’m a passive type person, but I am jumping for joy!”

Transforming Our Community One Life at a Time Class 7:00 PM on Wednesdays October 1–22 Room L106 Led by Jay St. Clair, Community Outreach Minister

COMMUNITY OUTREACH MISSION STATEMENT Restoring a relevant church to the Joplin area by loving our neighbor as we love ourselves.

12

chjoplin.org

We want to be an encouragement and resource to you as you take to heart how Jesus summed up loving Him in His Kingdom.

COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION Have you ever wanted to help someone but were afraid you didn’t know how? Do you have a family member or friend that you have tried to help but it didn’t work out too well? Welcome to the club! Helping people is a messy job and yet that is what Jesus is attracted to. He is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. We want to equip people to help with healthy boundaries so that we don’t hurt them in our “helping” and protect ourselves from needless pain. We also want to introduce you to some of the ways we are helping people at God’s Resort, Life House, and Circles as we live out the heart of Jesus in our community!

GREAT DAY OF SERVICE

NEIGHBORHOODS HERE WE COME! On Sunday morning, September 28, over 2000 of us will serve neighborhoods mowing and trimming and loving our neighbors as we love ourselves! Others will work at area organizations like Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, Columbia Elementary and other Joplin schools. Some of us will visit the lonely at area nursing homes or deliver cookies to fire stations. Other churches and community organizations and volunteers will join us including our Bright Futures adopted school and North Middle School teachers, parents and students. You get the idea: We will be serving Joplin in the name of Jesus! It is amazing how one day can have such an impact on a whole community. It is a day that has come to symbolize the heart of God for our city. Following our work, don’t miss the picnic and party in Landreth Park for hamburgers and hotdogs, live music, games, and lots of fun! Jesus came to serve. Let’s join Him in every corner of Joplin for a Great Day of Service!

We need project leaders to sign up early so we can make our time that day in the community more relational and organized. Each project leader will make personal contact with the people on the block their team will be serving. Please consider being a project leader this year.

You can volunteer online or at a kiosk in the Atrium on Sunday mornings. To sign up online go to www.greatdayofservicejoplin.com.

Restoring a relevant church to the Joplin area by loving our neighbor as we love ourselves.

Our Bright Futures Partner school is Columbia Elementary. You can participate in LUNCH PALS —a 20 minute commitment per week to change a child’s life by eating lunch with him or her—or T.R.E.K. (Together Reaching Every Kid)—a weekly commitment to read with a child after school. Our Middle School partner is North Middle School. Our own Brandon Eggleston is the principal and anxious to welcome you! Our opportunity there is to take part in the Reading 180 program. If you would like to serve at a school closer to your home or work let them know you are from College Heights so we can encourage you as you make a difference in the life of a child. Sharing a meal is an important part of Bright Futures.

“This year has been our biggest year yet and we are looking forward to the future. Building a stronger community through the love of Christ takes time and continuous resources, but we continue to be blessed with a growing network of partners, donors, and community advocates!” Katie Hargrove Director

NEIGHBORHOOD LIFE HOUSE What was once the iconic Cragin mansion became Ozark Bible College in 1946. As OBC grew, it moved to the present campus at 1111 N. Main in the early 1960s. The old campus at 506 N. Wall became North Joplin Christian Church that faithfully served the neighborhood until May 2008. In 2008, the church was closing its doors and the elders graciously gave the property to Neighborhood Life House in order to do ministry in the north Joplin area. In November 2008, The Neighborhood Life House was established with Kids love the lessons and crafts at Life House.

a mission: “Building a strong community by empowering people to see who they can become with the help of God.” This year we served 133 youth and children, multiplying our efforts from the first four desperate children in January 2009. Over 5,500 volunteer hours were invested in changed lives. LOCALS OVERCOME POVERTY TO LEAD SUCCESSFUL LIVES Circles is an innovative national movement to end poverty in our community, one family at a time. The Circles model complements and builds on existing efforts of area social services agencies, including churches. Rather than providing financial or material support for people leaving poverty, the Circles Campaign develops social capital (primarily relationships and resources) for long-term empowerment and selfsufficiency.

Fran Horn graduates from Circles with the Circles and God’s Resort community around her.

A “Circle Leader” is the head of a family who has completed a 20-week Getting Ahead class and desires support from the larger community to permanently move out of poverty. Each Circle Leader is matched with two to four “Circle Allies,” who are community members trained in Bridges Out of Poverty and interested in developing relationships with people from different walks of life. At monthly meetings, Allies support their Circle Leader as they take steps toward achieving their future plans. Each Circle is supported by a professional Circles Coach. Everyone involved in Circles is invited to a weekly family-style dinner for relaxed conversations and community connection. Dinner and child care are always provided at no cost to the participating families. On July 10, Circles–Joplin held its first graduation for Circle Leaders. This group of Circle Leaders spent the past 20 weeks going through Circle Leader Training and are now ready to be paired with Allies who will help in their achievement of setting and completing life changing goals. The Allies are an amazing group of volunteers who have started their journey with their Circle Leader. These Allies surround our Circle Leaders and share their knowledge, experience, and support as the Circle Leader sets and achieves their goals. The next Class of Circle Leaders began their life changing journey on July 17. They will graduate in December and be paired with a new group of Allies. We can’t wait to see these individuals empowered through skills and resources to improve the quality of their lives! If you are interested in being a Circle Leader or a Circle Ally contact Julie at julie@chjoplin.org.

We are committed to doing our part to see that local churches are planted all over the world where they currently do not exist. We send and support teams all over the globe. One Less Gift provided basic necessities for kids in Southeast Asia

Pastors received motorcycles to help spread the Gospel

Get ready for One Less Gift...it is one of the most exciting things that happens at College Heights during the holiday season! CHANGING LIVES The past few years, the holiday season was changed for many of us. Many College Heights families committed to give to the “One Less Gift” offering. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas over $100,000 that we could have spent on ourselves and our families was given to people who have greater needs. $50,000 was used locally for those locked into poverty and $50,000 was used internationally for those struggling with hard issues that confront the poor.

OUR PLAN Each of us must continue to give generously to the vital “on-going” ministries of the church. Without faithful giving to the general offering, every ministry suffers. But beyond this, we give a special “One Less Gift” offering for those with the greatest need. We collect money between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year. This gift is used to meet the needs of our neighbors…some locally and some internationally as we work through our Global Partners.

The dedication plaque for a well drilled in India

This year we joyfully invite you and your family to partner again...or for the first time in this effort. We want to grow both our worship and our impact as we assist the poor. Doctors in India perform cleft palate surgeries

FAMILIES A healthy family nurtures their marriage, seeks deep relationships and friendships, leans hard and fast on a loving God, and leads their children to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We seek to be a ministry that helps families pursue and lay these foundation building blocks. Our main strategy to accomplish this is by tried and true, seasoned-in-life families walking beside others that are not as far along on the journey. The Family Ministry department is recruiting and training more marriage mentors! This is not a program, it’s a working relationship. It’s the process of having a seasoned and experienced couple (nobody said anything about being “perfect”) come alongside a less experienced couple to help show them the way. If this is something that sparks your interest, please contact us. For more information on these events or mentoring for a healthier marriage or if you want to help other couples seeking growth in their marriage and family, contact Titus Neuenschwander, Family Minister, at 624.6915 x180 or titus@chjoplin.org or SuSan Murdock at x181 or smurdock@chjoplin.org. MEN In the Men’s Ministry, we want to help you build relationships, invest in your family, develop as a leader, and become the man God made you to be. We have a men’s group that meets on Wednesday nights and we host special events throughout the year.

MEN’S FALL RETREAT October 3 & 4 Roaring River State Park Speaker: Shane Wood

Be on the lookout in the near future for more information about our Fantasy Football League, the Men’s Fall Retreat, Men’s Encounter, the 3-2-1 Ministry, 21st Century Knights, and the ever popular Wild Game Feed. For more information, contact Jeff White, Men’s Ministry Minister, at 624.6915 x340 or jwhite@ chjoplin.org.

3-2-1 MINISTRY Do you like to renovate, build, repair, landscape, or otherwise work up a sweat? Do you get satisfaction knowing you’ve helped someone in a practical, tangible way? Join our 3-2-1 Ministry. This is a great opportunity to love your neighbor as yourself by doing things that others may not be able to do. Here’s one testimony: “I am a single woman with health problems. My ability to repair things around the house and to do yard work is very limited. My ability to afford to hire people to do these things is also very limited. “The 3-2-1 guys really have been a blessing to me. They have helped with things such as fixing a toilet, mowing my yard, raking leaves, removing tree limbs that my homeowner’s insurance company was concerned about, and doing other yard work. When

my homeowner’s insurance company decided that I needed to have a railing around my front porch, the 3-2-1 guys built a railing and painted it for me. When my homeowner’s insurance company decided that my roof needed to be replaced or they would no longer insure my house, the 3-21 guys coordinated donations of materials and labor to replace my roof. “If this ministry did not exist, I do not know how I would get these things done. I am very thankful that these guys are willing to spend one Saturday morning of each month helping me with these things. This ministry definitely meets a need.” -Kathleen Vanderhoofven For more information on how you can get involved, contact Jeff White, Men’s Ministry Minister, at 624.6915 x340 or jwhite@chjoplin.org.

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES SUNDAYS Our ministry for people with disabilites, Thru The Roof, has three Bible School classes meeting at 9:15 AM for young children, elementary age, and high school/young adults. WEDNESDAYS We focus on prayer followed by specific activities alternating each week among Strength: Sports; Mind: Arts, Heart: Cooking, Soul: Worship; and Inclusion (visiting our same-age peers for Wednesday activities). PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT About every two months, we plan a special evening. The children have a fun-filled evening and parents have a few hours to themselves. JESUS JAM PROM In the spring we host one of the highlights of the year—a prom for our friends with disabilities. Jesus Jam is a fantastic evening of dancing, entertainment, and games for our friends with disabilites. For more information about the Thru The Roof ministry, call the church office at 624.6915.

SENIOR ADULTS PRIMETIMERS What a great group of senior adults! PRIMEtimers meets the second Monday each month at SMB Community Center, 7th and Duquesne, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM for an entertaining and informative program and a catered lunch. MEALS ON WHEELS To see the smile on peoples’ faces when they hear a friendly knock on the door and see our volunteers with a hot and nutritious lunch, is worth it all.

Made New

WOMEN

...to be made new in the attitude of your minds, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22-23 SAVE THE DATE August 21 Let’s Do Lunch August 23 Kickoff Brunch September 18 Let’s Do Lunch October 24-25 Prayer Retreat

This year’s theme for the Women’s Minstry is taken from Ephesians 4:23. Special events, retreats, Bible studies, and monthly encouragement will be based on this great book. We encourage you this year to read, study, and meditate over Paul’s words to the Ephesians. The Women’s Ministry has Bible studies for groups and individuals that will encourage your understanding and study. Paul also writes in Romans 12:2...”but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will

be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing, and perfect will.” We have heard the saying, “You are what you eat,” but spiritually, we might be able to say, “You are what you think.“ Let’s strive this year to be MADE NEW by His power by delving deeper into His Word. For more information about events and groups for women, contact Carol Bowland, Women’s Ministry Associate, at 417.624.6915 x301 or cbowland@chjoplin.org.

Pier

GET IN THE WATER Beach

Wade

When it comes to God’s Word—His love letter and instruction manual for us—there are two concepts that we need to focus on: knowledge and wisdom. First we begin to know what He is saying and what it means, then we find out how to use it and apply it to our lives and our ministry to others. In a church our size, people are at many different stages of their faith journey. One cookie-cutter approach for learning and discipleship is inadequate for a variety of people. It’s a little bit like taking a vacation to Key West, Florida. At first you want to take a walk out on the pier and just look around. What is this church stuff all about anyway? Then you take off your shoes and stroll on the beach to get a closer look. The water looks inviting and you decide to give it a try, wading just a little and maybe even splashing around with those beside you. You may read a little about creation and the stories of Noah, Abraham, and Moses, then flip over and check out the book of John which opens your eyes to who Jesus is. You even start to catch that all of this has a lot to do with you personally. But what is below the surface? It is time to walk out further and snorkel with your face in the water to see the vast world below the waves and ripples on top. What a fascinating world is below the surface! You want to go deeper yet, so you suit up with the scuba gear and dive in. You are totally immersed and awestruck by this new world before you.

Snorkel

26

Scuba

As a church we want to provide various levels of learning such as “Discover College Heights” which happens the first Sunday of each month and could be considered strolling on our pier. Coming this fall we will be offering several new opportunities such as a time on the beach, and a class we are calling “Baseline” for those who want to wade in. We even have three new snorkel-level Bible School classes for various ages, and an in-depth small group study called “DC – Developing Co-Laborers” for those ready to scuba dive and get into daily reading, prayer, and study habits with others. Be looking for more information on all of these opportunities… let’s get in the water!

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program that helps us deal with life’s “hurts, habits and hang-ups” that come from issues of anger, grief, alcoholism, guilt and shame, co-dependence, financial loss, divorce, dysfunctional families, sexual abuse, drug abuse, eating disorders, depression, ... the list is endless! The purpose of Celebrate Recovery is to celebrate God’s healing power in our lives through the eight recovery principles found in the beatitudes and the Christ-centered 12-steps. We open the door to healing by sharing our experiences, strengths and hopes with one another. In addition, we become willing to accept God’s grace in solving our life problems. The result: life change!

THE 1940’S COME TO COLLEGE HEIGHTS A full-length Broadway-style dramatic musical for choir and orchestra set in 1941. A captivating story which centers on a family’s journey through the pain of separation during the Christmas season and in the weeks leading up to Pearl Harbor and the outbreak of World War 2. The theme...hope. A comparison is drawn between the darkness of pre-World War II and that of Jesus’ birth. A highly original work coming from two extremely creative writers— Deborah Craig-Claar and Mark Hayes—each with a background in musical theater. The choral numbers are integrated into the story line as part of radio broadcasts that show the fear of what is happening in the world at that time and yet the hope that all will be well. The music features the sounds of the big band era, and it really swings! For more information visit chjoplin.org/christmas.

COMMUNITY GROUPS There’s nothing like getting together with a group of friends on a regular basis to talk, play games, snack, study the Word, pray, and live life together. We offer a variety of groups on a variety of nights to provide opportunities for you to build relationships with others who are on this journey of following Jesus. For more information on how to get connected to a group, contact Jeff White, Small Groups Minister, at 624.6915 x340 or jwhite@chjoplin.org.

GOD’S RESORT In 2005, a Christian business man had a dream that a real estate investment was meant for more than making money. God touched his heart as he worked at what was known at the time as the “last resort” to the folks who lived at 14th and Pearl apartments. One drug addicted lady came out of her apartment and said to him as he worked around the premises, “Rob, you look like one of us, you belong here.” It was as if God had said it to him. He invited Jay St. Clair, Community Outreach Minister, to come see what he felt God was calling the church to do. As they prayed, the Holy Spirit renamed the property, “God’s Resort.” From that time, the Spirit has transofrmed many people’s lives. In the fall 2007, God’s Resort became a 501c3 nonprofit ministry directed by a board of directors and now partners with several local churches to share God’s love and truth to the 23 apartments of God’s Resort and the wider neighborhood through the Community Center at 15th and Pearl. Today, God’s Resort is a ministry to people who are ready to come to God and walk hand-in-hand with God’s people to a better life in Christ. SAFETY PLAN Your safety and the safety of your family is a very important part of family life at College Heights Christian Church. To that end we have developed an “Emergency Response Plan” that details our response to the following emergency situations: fire, severe weather, armed intruder, medical emergency, bomb threat and utility failure. Please note that in the case of severe weather your children will be the first to move to shelter and will move to the safest areas in the building. Those in the Worship Center will be given specific directions regarding movement to their shelter areas. Each ministry area has a plan in place that is designed to meet the safety needs of that particular ministry. Please note the map that shows the “safe areas” that should be used in the event of severe weather and a photograph of the sign posted above the doors identifying those “safe” areas. The map also shows locations of exits that may be used in the event of a fire. For additional information contact any ministry leader or Steve Dennis at 624.6915 x120.

Signs like these are placed above certain doors throughout the building denoting Storm Shelter Rooms.
