MINISTRY CATALOG WINTER/SPRING 2016

RESOLU PRAY

Prayer has a simple definition, but a profound spiritual impact. Prayer is talking to God. There are many ways we engage in an extraordinary prayer life—individually, corporately, daily, prayers of gratitude, prayers for others, prayers for desires and needs, prayers for the lost, the hurting, the weak, the broken, our neighbors, our friends, our families, the nations, and everyone and everything in between. The Bible tells in everything by prayer and petition we should present our requests to God. It also tells us to pray without ceasing. To be people of extraordinary prayer, we must fight for that to be our immediate reaction to every piece of our lives. Prayer should consume our thoughts in trying circumstances as well as in mundane moments we experience from day to day. As people of God, let us strive to be known by extraordinary prayer.

SPEAK

Disciples of Jesus talk about Jesus. We want to be a place known by the stories of renewal and lives Jesus has changed. We are called “ambassadors of Christ” as though “God were making his appeal through us.” We are called to implore people to be in right relationship with God. This can be done on a large scale-impacting the entire globe through missions or media, and it can be done on a small, but no less impactful, scale–right in your own family or neighborhood. We are committed to telling as many people about the good news of Christ and our own stories of renewed lives.

2

UTIONS GROW

Discipleship is the process of growing in our love, devotion, and likeness of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Every follower of Christ should be growing in their faith and becoming more like Jesus every single day. We are committed to helping individuals know how to become better disciples and to empower them to bring others along on the journey. We do this through Bible studies, teaching, corporate worship, small groups, prayer, and individual devotion. We want to be known as a place where people look more like Jesus when they leave the doors than when they arrived. Let us, then, as disciples of Christ, strive to strengthen our own faith and be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit to become more like Him.

LOVE

We want to be known for the way we love others. Christ came not to be served, but to serve. The people of God should follow Christ’s model of being found among the broken, the poor, the lonely, the hurting, the orphans, the widows, the addicted, the disenfranchised, the confused, the angry, the depressed, the immigrants, the disabled, the sick, the imprisoned, the abused, the enslaved, the dying, and the lost. As a church, we sacrifice time and resources in order to serve and extravagantly love those who are in desperate need of the love of Christ. As individuals, may we also be willing to devote our time, money, status, talents, and possessions to selflessly love the people in our immediate reach and people around the world.

Who am I? Finding truth in confusing times.

Where do I belong? We were designed for a relationship with God and with each other.

Community Groups

Our community groups are small groups of students who meet in the homes of church families and are led by a college-age peer. Some of the groups are Bible studies, some are purely relational, and most groups are a mix of students from various colleges. Follow @chcollegeage on Twitter and to stay up-to-date with College Age! For more information, contact Josh Quade, College Age Minister, at 624.6915 x170 or jquade@chjoplin.org, or Madeline Bridgford, College Age Assistant, at 624.6915 x171 or mbridgford@chjoplin.org.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Friendship Families

International students are waiting to get to know you! Open your home once a month to a student for a meal and your world will soon change. Students tell us the time spent with an American family is one of the most memorable things they do while studying in the US. Friendship Families tell us that they get as much from this experience as their students! Learn about a new culture as you provide a home atmosphere (and home cooking) to a student that is far from family and friends. New students will be arriving later this summer, so sign up now! For more information contact Trish Udell at tudell@chjoplin.org.

English Classes for Refugees

Expand your world by helping those less fortunate. Hundreds of refugees have found themselves resettling in SW Missouri due to unfavorable conditions in their home countries. Come alongside teachers in a program that is seeking to help these English learners find success and confidence as they become proficient in English and live in the US. For more information about assisting with English Classes for Refugees contact Trish Udell at tudell@chjoplin.org.

Saving Your Marriage Before it Starts

And learn the importance of becoming “soul mates”-—a couple committed to growing together spiritually. Offered at Sundays at 9:15 AM from March 6 - April 24 (except Easter).

Marriage Retreats

Each marriage is unique, expressed by the colorful personalities of each spouse and textured by the circumstances at play in their lives. Blending these to make marriage work is a divinely inspired art form—challenging to master but definitely worth the effort. We offer retreats on February 12-14 and March 4-6. The “Art of Marriage” will make lasting impressions that will strengthen any marriage at any stage.

MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)

1st and 3rd Wednesdays, 9:15-11:30 AM in the Atrium Starting January 6 Sometimes as moms, we need to be reminded that we have been created to flourish and not just survive. This year’s theme is “A Fierce Flourishing.” What would it look like if we took one year choosing to flourish, to live our one wild and beautiful life? Take this challenge with us at MOPS. MOPS is for any mom with kids belly to kindergarten. Check us out—the first meeting is free or find us at www.facebook.com/JoplinMOPS.

YOUTH OFFICE

Your safety and the safety of your family is important. We have developed an “Emergency Response Plan” for emergency situations. In the case of severe weather your children will be the first to move to shelter in the safest areas of the building. Those in the Worship Center will be given specific directions regarding movement to their shelter areas. For additional information contact Steve Dennis at 624.6915 x120.
