MINISTRY CATALOG
SUMMER 2016
WELCOME SY HUFFER OUR NEW LEAD MINISTER When did the search for a new Lead Minister start? The process began with a Search Team who were designated by the elders and first met on August 4, 2015. The members of the Search Team were Chris DeWelt, Titus Neuenschwander, Logan Greer, Rick Bushnell, Ed Hahn, Dale Harrington, Mark Scott, and Shane Wood. They met regularly (over 15 times), made two trips of over 600 miles each, had dozens of phone discussions, met privately with many leaders both locally and away from home, and carefully researched the candidates. In finding our way to Sy, the Search Team looked at a few hundred sermons, considered over 30 candidates, and dedicated hundreds of man-hours to seeking whom the Lord would have as our Lead Minister.
Who is Sy?
Background Sy grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma and his home church is Boulevard Christian.
2
Yes, that is also the home church of our Creative Arts Minister, Josh Huckabay. In fact, Josh and Sy are close friends, which the Search Team did not know until well into the process of consideration. Ministry Experience Sy has been serving for the past four years at Crossroads Christian Church in Evansville, Indiana. He has served on the preaching team at Crossroads and also served as the Young Adult and Community Outreach Pastor. We believe his ministry at a church of 4000 will serve him well as we move toward the future. Family Sy is married to his lovely wife, Monica. In January, they welcomed the newest member to their family, a little girl named Geri Jean. Monica has a real passion for mentoring and working with young people. She is also excited about coming to join the family here at College Heights. Who were Sy’s references? Sy’s references came from Ken Idleman (the lead minister whom he served under), Matt
Proctor (president of OCC and mentor to Sy), Mark Moore (a mentor), Robin Sigars (minister at Carterville Christian Church where Sy served during college), James McCracken (the minister of his home church in Muskogee, Oklahoma), and Damien Spikereit (Vice President at OCC and a mentor).
The elders and the staff are excited by where we see God taking us as we move forward in faith. We truly believe that the best is yet to come!
Why Sy?
Primary Preacher–his voice will not be the only one we hear from the pulpit, but he will be the lead preacher.
Sy has shown maturity in his leadership, his preaching, his capacity for vision, and most importantly, in his spirit as a humble learner. With one voice, the Search Team, the Ministers, and the Elders believe God is now calling College Heights to a future of significant and timely ministry, and we believe Sy will be the lead catalyst for that future.
What are his responsibilities as Lead Minister?
Vision Caster–Sy will be responsible for the articulation and delineation of where God is leading College Heights. Sy will lead the vision process, which is an important one and involves many people. Staff Leader–he will lead the very talented and gifted staff of our church.
Dear College Heights, My name is Sy Huffer. I have been married to my wife Monica for six years next month, and we have one daughter named Geri Jean, born this last January. We cannot begin to tell you all how excited we are to become a part of the College Heights family. We have had nothing but the utmost respect for the leadership of College Heights, for the love you have for the poor and the nations, and for your commitment to the study of Scripture. We are in awe of the journey that God has taken us on these last several months and are ecstatic about our future together in serving his Kingdom. Thank you for your ongoing prayers for us throughout this process, and we are truly humbled and honored to begin serving God’s Kingdom together. We look forward to the future and the journey of making disciples who change the world. Sincerely, Sy, Monica, and Geri Huffer

Our tagline—play hard. sing loud. love God.—describes what we do every week. We play fun games, sing great songs together as we worship the Lord, connect with our friends in small group time, and learn about how AMAZING our God is by studying His Word, the Bible. The theme is “Game Changer.” We will learn about Paul, Timothy, the church in Ephesus, and how to have a pure heart, clean mind, and strong faith. These lessons are made more memorable with camp activities such as swimming, archery, zip line, and games! We need lots of parents to join us as sponsors, also.
Kids and parent sponsors register at chjoplin.org/register.
Water Run 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon, Saturday, August 27 For the past few years, LaunchPad kids have raised money for charitable organizations by doing what kids do best—running! They have raised over $6000 to dig wells and another $6000 to provide bicycles for traveling preachers in India. This year’s goal is to raise money for Watered Gardens, a local Gospel Rescue Mission. Children collect donations based on how many laps they run. Kids will receive pledge forms and more information on Sunday mornings in early August.

STUDENTS
Middle School
14
High School Kids in grades 6–8 are ready to engage their faith and beliefs. We use specifically designed programming, teaching, games, and mentorship to direct middle schoolers’ rapidly developing minds toward Jesus. Our goal is for middle schoolers to have a transformational understanding of and belief in the gospel. We want to engage their hearts with the truth of Jesus, and help them answer the “Why?” of their beliefs.
We want students to be able to answer three questions: • Who am I? Finding truth in confusing times. • Where do I belong? We were designed for a relationship with God and with each other. • What am I supposed to do? I live to bring God joy and to serve as His heart, hands, and feet.

June 20-24 MIX is a summer event by CIY (Christ in Youth) specifically designed for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. It is intentionally crafted to engage middle school students through tactile, interactive, and fun activities coupled with Bible-based teaching and small group interaction. MIX is an event that understands middle school students need their own experience. This age group is at a unique time in their lives – they’re growing and learning different than any other age group. They’re still young enough to need to play, but old enough to start to understand some core ideals that will stay with them the rest of their lives. For this reason, MIX isn’t designed for high school students, or for preteens. It’s specifically designed for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students – it’s their chance to be exactly who they are: to play, listen, and learn as themselves.

Missions work and service is the heart of the school. Each year high school students spend a week doing missions work locally, nationally and internationally. This year’s projects included trips as far as Kingston, Jamaica; Juarez, Mexico; Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Locally students served organizations such as The Neighborhood Life House, God’s Resort, Watered Gardens, Rapha House, Missouri Baptist Children’s Home, and Thru the Roof Ministry. Students from all ages are involved by having prayer partners, and donating items to the missions program. God has blessed the students by allowing them to share the gospel with others in many ways.
STORM SHELTERS
TODDLER TOWN
Students represent over 90 different churches, with the largest number coming from College Heights Christian Church. CHCS is accredited by the North Central Association and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International.
Your safety and the safety of your family is important. We have developed an “Emergency Response Plan” for emergency situations. In the case of severe weather your children will be the first to move to shelter in the safest areas of the building. Those in the Worship Center will be given specific directions regarding movement to their shelter areas. For additional information contact Steve Dennis at 624.6915 x120.

College Heights Christian School was founded in 1978 by the elders and ministers at College Heights and has grown to approximately 550 students from preschool through 12th grade.
