Summer 2017

WELCOME Whether you are new to College Heights or a long time member, we are so glad you are here! Every person who walks through our doors is important to us, so if you ever feel like just another number, we’re doing something wrong and we give you permission to tell us about it! We know that you, like every person who comes to College Heights, are on a unique journey of faith marked by a quest to answer the questions you face. You may be asking yourself, “Will I fit in here with this group of people?” “Is this a place where I can serve?” “Can these people help me grow in my relationship with God?” Or maybe you are wrestling with difficult and disturbing questions like, “Where is God in the midst of tragedy?” “Is there hope for me to be forgiven by God?” “What happens to me when I die?” “How can I live a life that matters?” Wherever you are on your journey, we want to walk together with you. It is in Christian community that we learn our true identity, what our purpose is, and who we are meant to become. At College Heights, you can be a part of something bigger than yourself. It is only together that we can carry out our mission: to make disciples of Jesus Christ who change the world through the power of the Holy Spirit to the glory of God. We invite you to join us in • praying about everything to strengthen our trust in God and deepen our love for Him; • speaking the good news of Jesus’ rescue, healing, and purpose; • growing by following Jesus and choosing God’s way every day; and • loving like Jesus loved by giving time, resources, gifts and energy to help all people encounter God’s love. As a group of God’s people we care about you and your family and we’re here not only to help you grow spiritually, but to help in any way we can! If you would like to know more about College Heights or get plugged in, please don’t hesitate to connect with us! 1

As we become disciples of Jesus who change the world, it’s important to remember we are a “we”. We are part of a community of believers. Donald Miller says it this way, “I am a tree in a story about a forest.” One of the key ways you can get connected to community here at College Heights is by connecting to a small group. Small groups are about creating an environment where we can grow in relationship with God and with other people. Basically, it’s where we learn to be better disciples and help others do the same. In a small group, you will look at what God is saying and how you

can obey it, and you will do this in community. If you are interested in getting connected to a small group, you can contact our Small Groups Minister, Josh Beck at jbeck@chjoplin.org / 417.624.6915 x320. IMPORTANT DATES

WEDNESDAY NIGHT PROGRAMMING

Programming on Wednesday nights is on a break for the summer. During the school year, we offer classes and programs for all ages. Programming begins at 6:30 PM for Middle School and High School, and 7:00 PM for all other classes. Plan to join us for Wednesday night programming, which resumes September 6. 8

SUMMER SERMON SERIES During the summer, we will be studying the story of Jeremiah, otherwise known as the weeping prophet. Jeremiah’s story is a tragic one, yet it reveals to us the things that break God’s heart. And as we study the life of Jeremiah in a season where the heart of God and the words of his prophet and the nation of his people are Shattered, our prayer is that our hearts break for the things that break God’s heart.

Not familiar with Jeremiah? You can watch a helpful overview video of Jeremiah by The Bible Project on YouTube at tiny.cc/jeremiahstory.

LAUNCHPAD 1ST - 5TH GRADERS Our goal in LaunchPad is to give every child a solid foundation for their spiritual journey. We do this by going all the way thru the Bible every year. Each week we dive into a Bible story to learn the facts and discuss how we can apply it to our lives. We also spend time in small groups to learn how to talk about Jesus and share our lives with others. We use FUN to make church enjoyable and memorable; hopefully this will be the best hours of a child’s week. Every week we like to...PLAY HARD, SING LOUD, LOVE GOD.

PARENTS,

We want your children to feel like they BELONG in LaunchPad. We design our time together to not only teach them about Jesus, but also to connect them with friends their own age and adult leaders who will engage them, encourage them, and be a consistent voice in their lives. We know kids love to have fun, so we do our best to include that, too. It’s a great way to bond with friends and learn about Jesus.

ADULTS,

We are always on the lookout for people who love Jesus & love children. If you share our desire to establish a strong foundation for our children’s spiritual journey, we would love to talk to you about joining the team. We have lots of different roles to meet a wide variety of passions, skills, and comfort levels. So if you are thinking about it...JUST SAY YES to joining the LaunchPad team!

COLLEGE HEIGHTS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

College Heights Christian School was founded in 1978 by the elders and ministers at College Heights and has grown to approximately 550 students from preschool through 12th grade. The school follows a college preparatory curriculum laying the foundation for graduates to become successful business and community leaders. Students represent over 90 different churches, with the largest number coming from College Heights Christian Church. CHCS is accredited by the North Central Association and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International. Missions work and service is the heart of the school. Each year high school students spend a week doing missions work locally, nationally and internationally. This year’s projects included trips as far as Kingston, Jamaica; Juarez, Mexico; Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Locally students served organizations such as The Neighborhood Life House, God’s Resort, Watered Gardens, Rapha House, Missouri Baptist Children’s Home, and Thru the Roof Ministry. Students from all ages are involved by having prayer partners, and donating items to the missions program. God has blessed the students by allowing them to share the gospel with others in many ways. For more information, call 417.782.4114 x 201 or visit collegeheights.org. 17
