WE NEED TO COMMIT TO OUR GOALS NOT JUST ON THE GOOD DAYS, BUT ESPECIALLY ON THE TOUGH DAYS. Cassiano, who enjoys sailing outside of Karate, always said that anyone can be a good sailor on a bright, sunny day with a nice breeze. It is the tough, stormy days that one proves their resilience, mental fortitude, and commitment to achieving their dreams, and there are many more stormy days than sunny days on the path to success. This is true both for success in the dojo where students strive to reach higher levels of Karate technical proficiency, but also outside of the dojo in school or in the professional world. For example, our dream has been to connect Karate students at the college level throughout the world. The plan we made was not only at the local level of teaching Shotokan Karate in the Boston

From there, we took action everyday to build bridges and provide opportunities for students, i.e. organizing seminars with instructors from various Karate organizations, hosting International Zoom Tournaments, encouraging Karate activities in developing countries, and organizing promotions with instructors around the world.

Our Karate community builds bridges with Karate instructors and organizations around the world. This gives our students the opportunity to learn different approaches to Karate and create bonds with Karateka across the globe. We connect with high-level instructors who view Karate not just as a physical activity, but also as a way of developing humble character, confidence, leadership skills in Karate ‘diplomats’ who make the world a better place in their local, regional, and global communities. Throughout the magazine, we feature a few of the instructors who represent this approach to Karate and with whom we have developed a bond. Page 19 Page 15

Additionally, we try to have fun outside of the dojo. If we get to know each other outside of the dojo then it is easier to trust each other inside of it. It’s about sharing happy and fun moments together."

TCKF JAPAN KARATE TOURNAMENT

For the past several years, Hiro Komine of

Hiro Komine: Chief Officer of International Relations for JUKF

the Technical Collegiate Karate Federation (TCKF) has invited Karateka from Boston to visit Japan and compete in their yearly tournament in November. Due to COVID, this year we were not able to travel to Japan, but the tournament was successfully organized November 28, 2021. The TCKF was formed in 1984 by the 5 colleges of Shibaura Institute of Technology, Chiba Institute of Technology, Kogakuin Institute of Technology, Nihon University Technical Department, and Tokyo Institute of Technology. In that year they hosted the first East Japan Technical Collegiate Karate Tournament.

In 2014 for the first time, Boston area Karateka were invited to participate in the 27th TCKF Tournament. The Boston Karateka joined again in 2015 and in 2017 and created an exchange program. In 2018, the TCKF sponsored 5 students to visit Boston and train at the various universities in the area. In 2020, the TCKF joined the Japan University Karate Federation (JUKF). As of 2021, the TCKF consists of 18 technical colleges. Page 38

JAPAN BRIDGE WITH BOSTON USA AND OXFORD, UK We are happy to congratulate Hiro Komine for becoming the Chief Officer of International Relations for the Japan University Karate Federation (JUKF). It was a well deserved opportunity for Komine san given the efforts he put in the past several and

the

Karateka from Japan grew. One of the most memorable elements of the visits to Japan was not only the exposure to Karate training of students in Japan, but also

the

to

providing

generation of Karate students opportunities to learn and grow, as well as use Karate as a means of diplomacy to exchange ideas with Karateka around the world. Vazrik Sensei had the pleasure of traveling to Oxford with Komine san to be able to solidify a bridge between America, Europe, and Japan. While COVID has slowed down for now the opportunity to travel to Japan, the invitation to participating in the Technical Collegiate Karate tournament as well as the All Japan

University

Karate

tournament

has

been

extended

to

our

students

for

2022, and we are excited to not only participate but also to train with various college Karate clubs and create bonds of friendship and exchange.
