tuition gets hiked up at multiple miami universities By: Niko Mackey
Shit you should know
2012 Undergrad tuition UMiami: $1,600 per credit hour or flat tuition of $19,220 for 12-17 credits. Fees are an additional $607.00 for full time students. fiu: $177.56 per credit hour ($2,663.40 for 15 credits). Fees are an additional $351.22 for full time students. Miami Dade College undergraduate tuition: $116.64 per credit hour (including all fees) 6 \\ fall 2011 \\ miami version
Times are tough. Belts are tightening and prices are rising across the board, whether people like it or not. Florida universities and colleges are no exception, having raised their tuition due to a decrease in state funding.
E E
very year millions of college students struggle to find ways to pay for their education. The nation’s high unemployment rate, highest for those under 25 years of age, does nothing to help students who suddenly come across wallet-shrinking college expenses. Although plenty of scholarship opportunities exist, many struggling students do not qualify for need-based scholarships or grants. There may be different stances on
tuition increases, but one thing is for sure: students hate it. The National Center for Education Statistics lists the average national in-state, undergraduate rate of tuition and required fees for four-year institutions during the 2009-2010 school year: $6,695 for public schools; $23,210 for private schools. Statistics are also available for the Sunshine State: $3,452 for public schools; $19,116 for private schools.

continued Compared to the previous 2008-2009 school year, Florida’s public schools increased tuition and fees by 4.83 percent, versus the national 6.07 percent increase; private Florida schools similarly raised their rates by 1.64 percent, compared to the nation’s 1.57 percent. In the last two years, tuition rates increased by about 15 percent. Florida’s most populated county is Miami-Dade. As such a people-packed region, one can rightfully expect Miami-Dade County to host premiere post-secondary education facilities. Florida International University is one of the 25 largest universities in the nation with 44,010 students attending in Fall of 2010. With over 174,000 students attending, Miami Dade College claims to be “the largest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the most highly regarded colleges in the nation.” US News & Report ranked the private University of Miami at number one in the state and 47 in the nation. FIU charges $177.56 per credit hour, or $2,663.40 for 15 credit hours. An employee of FIU had stated a tuition rate of $136.10
per credit hour for the previous year, indicating a substantial rise of $41.46. However, one should note that the same employee contradicted FIU’s admissions webpage when she said this year’s rate is $145.56. The trend continues with MDC, but to a lesser degree. Tuition at MDC is $87.42 per credit hour for baccalaureate programs. However, all fees are multiplied by the number of credit hours; therefore, 15 credit hours cost $1,582.20, at $116.64 per credit hour. Last year, students had paid $105.22 per credit hour. The private UM raised their tuition rates for the upcoming academic year by $62 per credit hour to $1,600. Full time students receive a flat tuition rate of $19,220, an equivalent of 12 credit hours, which benefits those who enroll for the standard 15 hours. This flat fee sees a proportional $739 increase. While tuition may be rising, students must also be aware of rising fees, which can also have a big impact on one’s wallet. Although last year’s fee rates are unavailable, FIU now charges $351.22 in addition to tuition. As noted, MDC does not charge any
flat fees, instead opting to factor all fees by hours of enrollment. Of the $11.42 increase in charges, $4.94 is attributed to additional fees; out of the total increase in fees, a $3.00 per credit “Access and Parking” charge is brand new. In addition to the increase in tuition, UM raised other fees by a total of $170. Just like MDC, UM introduced a new $150 “Student Center Fee.” This new fee “Provides funding for the new student center project, which includes both a new Student Activities Center... and also renovations and upgrades to the existing Whitten University Center.” Also interesting to note is the relatively new “Health and Counseling Center Fee,” which is stated to be “a mandatory fee for all new students... effective August 2010.” It was predicted by some sources that Florida’s tuition rates would rise between seven and 15 percent. To the relief of students, rates increased by a significantly smaller amount. The marginal increases are perhaps in effort to avoid backlash. Whatever the reason may be, students can unfortunately expect other costs to increase along with tuition. miami version \\ fall 2011 \\ 9

farmers’ market debuts on um’s coral gables campus
Sarah Thompson University of Miami
UM med school gets Sovereignty By Stacy Marquis 10 \\ fall 2011 \\ miami version
University of Miami students no longer need to wander off campus to find fresh, locally grown produce. In an effort to support the health and well-being of its faculty and students, the UM Student Government has arranged for a farmers’ market to take place right on the Coral Gables campus every Wednesday from 9am to 2pm. The project was first brought to the table over a year ago by former Student Government president Christina Farmer. In a recent interview with The Miami Hurricane, Farmer explained, “People like a lot of fruit, especially living on a health-conscious campus, but they don’t always know where they can find it locally.” Junior Alexandra Goldklang told The Miami Hurricane, “I think it’s a really good idea
to bring healthy things to the students on campus... I mean, it beats Whole Foods.” Organizers of the farmers’ market expect around fifteen vendors to occupy the lawn near the post office on Wednesday mornings. They will sell items from fresh veggies, succulent fruits, and homemade pastries to kettle corn and natural soaps. Alternate farmers’ markets in the vicinity of the Coral Gables campus include the South Miami Farmers’ Market every Saturday from 9am until 2pm in front of City Hall and the much larger Coconut Grove Organic Market (presented by Glacer Organic Farms) which occurs every Saturday from 10am until 7pm on Grand Ave. The Coral Gables Farmers’ Market only takes place from January through March.
In a room full of UM faculty physicians and UM President Donna E. Shalala, Governor Rick Scott signed a sovereign immunity bill on July 1, 2011, at Jackson Memorial Hospital. This bill grants protection from civil suits to private university physicians who treat patients at public hospitals. At the ceremonial bill signing, State Rep-
resentative Frank Artiles stated that he felt honored to sponsor this “important piece of legislation,” and that “teaching hospitals will continue to play a vital role in our communities.” President Shalala agrees with Artiles about the importance of the bill, stating that the bill will secure the future of the state’s physician work force.

not nearly enough advisors at fiu Monique Rodriguez Florida International University
While the FIU Undergraduate Advising office proudly stands by its belief of quality academic advising being an essential component to a successful academic career, many students consider their services inadequate. With statistics from Fall 2010 reporting 9,227 lower division undergraduate students enrolled in the university, the average of 15-20 advisors available for freshmen and sophomores appears unable to satisfy the great need in question. Conversely, juniors and seniors are directed to the upper division advising offices of their particular program of study, where extraordinarily in many cases, the amount
of advisors available becomes even smaller even though they account for 23,674 students as of Fall 2010. With ongoing student complaints regarding limited advisors as well as advisors’ inadequate ability to assist the students, a handful of departments are taking the necessary measures to address the issue through email and phone academic advising. Santiago Sellan, FIU Criminal Justice Senior said, “While trying to schedule an appointment to speak with an advisor the receptionist asked if I wanted to get advised in person or over the phone. I just had to call at that time and spoke directly to my advisor.

According to UM’s press release, the objective for this team is to “accurately predict the fate of hydrocarbons found in crude oil 14 \\ fall 2011 \\ miami version
that were released into the environment, helping to guide risk management and response efforts to minimize damage to human health, the economy and the ecosystem.” Tamay Ozgokmen, lead investigator and RSMAS professor, explains, “This event is like the Moon Mission for oceanography an important and challenging problem with immediate social impact. This is the kind of focus that brings scientists together.” He gathered a team of 26 principal investigators from the Gulf States and beyond.
Thirteen of them were selected from UMiami. Ozgokmen states, “It was amazing how easy it was to assemble the CARTHE team; it was a matter of looking at our own expertise, then calling on colleagues from other institutions for the missing pieces of the puzzle. Everyone was ready and eager to put our ideas together within days. Now, we are all looking forward to working together, and getting started on this new project, as well as collaborating with other consortia funded by the GRI.”

FIU alumnus and former football star Andy ‘Silent Rage’ Leavine scored an elusive World Wrestling Entertainment contract after competing in the hit USA show WWE Tough Enough. Leavine beat 13 other contestants. The final match was held at Florida Championship Wrestling in Tampa, FL. Stone Cold Steve Austin, known as WWE’s most famous, or infamous depending on who you ask, superstar announced Leavine’ victory. Austin then proceeded to give Leavine a Stone Cold Stunner, Austin’s signature finishing move. This was after Vince McMahon, chairman of WWE, slapped him in the face. Welcome to wrestling kid.
RUDY MAGE, long-time graffiti artist and graduate of AI, launched InkedPro 5 years ago in a 500 sq ft. efficiency. Now his creative group works from a 5,000 sq ft. studio in the Wynwood Art District and has expanded now offering full service graphic design and printing. He says that the best part of running a business is creating exactly what you want; and the hardest part is having no one to blame but yourself when things go wrong. Rudy admits that the competition in his industry is overwhelming and he has seen a lot of people give up on it. But he says to never give up on what you want because “nothing that comes easy is worth the keep.”
Eric Stevens’s story began in 2010, when he won a $2,500 grant from the University of Miami for a business plan advocating for medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida. Stevens used the winnings to travel to California, visit dispensaries, and attended Oaksterdam, where he took advanced classes on the business of governmentregulated pot selling. He later teamed up with Ford Bannister (part of the Denver decriminalization fight) to create Sensible, an organization advocating marijuana reform in Florida. This summer, Stevens stood up in front of the Miami Beach Commission, and fought to get a ballot vote for decriminalizing weed in SoBe, without success.

The (hopefully) annual event features a beach with constant music and barbecues, a forest that houses hammocks to chill in by day and becomes a glow-in-the-dark wonderland of colorful lights by night, and five stages to continually pump out music for four straight days. You can also find a huge water-park and even a life-sized game of mouse trap. For the first time, Bassnectar held the BASS ISLAND festival in New York City, creating “a unique world to explore, beyond the realms of a normal concert experience.” The festival lineup included Lupe Fiasco, Z-Trip, Prefuse 73, Virtual Boy, Dave Nada, and Joro Boro. On Bass Island, Lupe Fiasco successfully surfed the melodic tsunami that is Bassnectar’s womp. He shredded beats, hammered the drums and gave the bass heads something to stomp to. Bassnectar successfully executed their goal of creating an amalgam of music, art, and culture on Governor’s Island.
