UCFAa found guilty of negligence in ereck plancher’s death Shit you should know
A widely unknown DISEASE Sickle cell means a red blood cell is shaped like a crescent rather than a circle. The abnormal cells do not carry adequate oxygen and can cause blockages because they are stickier than normal. Sickle cell anemia has no widely available cure. However, treatments can help with the symptoms and complications of the disease. According to the CDC, sickle cell trait occurs in 1 in 12 African Americans. 6 \\ fall 2011 \\ ORLANDO version
Three years after the death of UCF freshman football player Ereck Plancher, his family and the University of Central Florida Athletic Association (UCFAA) have ended a nearly three-week trial to determine who is responsible for his death.
T T
he June 2011 trial resulted in a fivehour jury deliberation that found UCF coaches and trainers negligent in their treatment of Plancher’s sickle cell trait. The UCFAA is expected to appeal the $10 million decision. Plancher collapsed in March 2008 following the first off-season conditioning drill after spring break. pital. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was related to his sickle cell trait, which prevents blood cells from carrying oxygen to organs and tissue like they normally would when the body is put under extreme stress. For the UFCAA, a negligence decision means the jurors found that the coach and trainers did not do everything possible to

continued save Plancher’s life and that they did not follow the pre-existing protocol for dealing with an athlete known to have sickle cell. There are no rules barring athletes with the trait from playing or participating in drills. UFCAA spokesman Grant Heston issued a statement in the days following the jury verdict discussing the school and insurance company’s combined decision to appeal. “Justice was not done. . . We will appeal this decision. We are confident that a just and fair appellate review will find that the verdict came about after a number of decisions in the court that prevented a complete review by the jury,” Heston said in the statement. Plancher’s parents, Enock and Gisele Plancher, requested a jury trial when they filed a wrongful death suit against UCFAA in 2009. The trial answered questions of whether or not the school notified Plancher and his family that he had the potentially deadly sickle cell trait and if Coach George O’Leary restricted access to water during some of the drill and ordered the athletic trainers to leave. O’Leary and the trainers also faced accusations of not responding quickly when Plancher showed signs of extreme fatigue. In a 2008 interview with ESPN, two ath-
letes stated that Plancher was uncharacteristically slow and out of breath toward the end of the March 2008 conditioning drill. In the same interview, they also said several members of the team tried to help Plancher up when he first was unable to stand and called to the trainers once he collapsed but they were slow to respond. During the trial two athletes also participating in the drill testified that O’Leary did prohibit them from drinking water and send the athletic trainers away. One athletic trainer testified that she was not certain she told Plancher he had the sickle cell trait. The UCFAA continues to deny both accusations against O’Leary. In mid-July, the Association officially submitted a motion for a new trial asserting that the trial judge, Circuit Judge Robert Evans did not direct the first trial like he should have and requesting that the jury decision be overturned. The Plancher family’s attorney, Steve Yerrid, did not return calls from back\slash to discuss the family’s preparation for the appeals process. In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel newspaper, Yerrid said he does not expect the jury decision to be overturned. “The insurance company represent-
ing them will do anything not to honor the jury’s decision,” Yerrid said in the interview. “The process will work to our advantage and justice will be served.” The UFCAA paid for Plancher’s funeral services and burial in 2008. The funeral was held in his hometown of Naples, FL. O’Leary attended and gave a speech at the service. ORLANDO version \\ fall 2011 \\ 9

Rosen students drink up beer serving program By Courtney Ward
Violence Peaking At university of central florida By Mike Mitchell 10 \\ fall 2011 \\ ORLANDO version
Some UCF Students can finally add ‘Beer Connoisseur’ to their resumes. The Rosen School of Hospitality Management is preparing for its second semester of soon-to-be certified beer experts through the Cicerone Certification Program. In the semester-long seminar in Brewing and Quality Beer, the final exam is the Certified Beer Server exam. Students who pass the final also become certified on their knowledge of beer. For graduates, certification means they have a unique, distinguishing knowledge of beer flavors, brewing, styles, storage and more, allowing them to be prime candidates for careers in serving, brewing or distribution. “Cicerone is quickly becoming the industry standard,” explains Rosen College instructor Ed Measom.
“Many top vendors, breweries and distributors are seeking employees certified by the program.” Rosen became involved in the program last fall. At the end of that semester, 78% of students passed the multiplechoice certification test. Students can independently go on to complete the next two levels of Cicerone certification, Certified Cicerone and Master Cicerone, after they have moved onto a beer career path and can meet work and recommendation requirements. Students at UCF already have the opportunity to become wine sommeliers, and this new addition enables Rosen to potentially gradate the world’s next generation of brewers of great alcoholic beverages with more than a dorm-room-degree in taste.
Violence at UCF peaked in the months leading up to the summer and have yet to simmer down. A rash of robberies, some including physical assault, have caused the university police and local police to be on high alert. Sergeant Troy Williamson with the university police says even though the crimes on and surrounding campus were widely publicized, they have been working to ensure students are as safe as possible. “In June [university police] were able to bring charges against several bike thieves. That’s a step in the right direction,” Williamson said. “We are working with the local and state police to find
criminals committing serious crimes against our students.” Students were most recently shaken by a late July home invasion that resulted in potentially $10,000 worth of stolen goods including a collection of guns. The students living in the off-campus home also reported suffering some physical violence in the attack. Williamson warns students to have a lot of diligence about their own safety. He says simply by making sure to take well-lit paths, trying to avoid traveling on foot alone at night and being aware of their surroundings, students can lessen their chances of being attacked or robbed.

UCF Med Students allowed to clinically train this fall By Ivan Flores
The UCF Medical School is one step away from being able to offer medical degrees to its students. The Liason Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the nationally recognized authority in accrediting medical schools, has granted UCF a provisional accreditation. The decision came after an LCME team visited the medical school and evaluated it on 132 educational and medical standards. The team also evaluated the students’ use of electives as well as faculty and budgeting. The new status will allow students to begin clinical training and puts the univer-
sity that much closer to being able to confer medical degrees. In addition to training and the ability to award degrees, the change in status will allow the school to begin third and fourth year education, as well as enroll new students. Faculty and staff expect the LCME team to return to the campus in the fall of 2012 to re-evaluate the school on the same 132 standards that have granted the university their provisional status. If all goes as planned, the university should attain full accreditation in 2013 when the 2009 charter class is expected to graduate.

Match.com Rape Case Against UCF Student Gets Dropped It would have been a case for the modern age. Two young people meet on Match.com, have drinks, go back to an apartment, and the rest is where it all falls apart
U U
CF student Aaron Floyd was accused of raping an unnamed victim after watching television on his bed, according to the arrest report. Floyd then, allegedly, took the victim to a local pharmacy where she purchased the morning after pill and took the pill as he watched. The two had exchanged emails and text messages before agreeing to meet up for a first date at the Orlando Ale House. After the date the victim gave Floyd a kiss. The two saw each other again the next day and returned to Floyd’s 14 \\ fall 2011 \\ ORLANDO version

apartment where the alleged rape occurred. According to the police report Floyd and the alleged victim were kissing on his bed when he began to perform sexual acts on her against her will. A rape examination was performed on the victim and the results were consistent with with the victim’s story. Police questioned Floyd in his Oviedo home before arresting him and collecting his computer tower and cellphone. The case against Floyd was dropped because of a strong consent defense and the victim’s desire
not to prosecute. According to Floyd the sex was consensual. This is not the first rape case that has involved couples who have met on Match.com. An unnamed woman met Alan Wurtzel on Match.com and was raped by him in April 2010. Wurtzel had six previous convictions for sexual battery. In another case Jeffery Marsalis drugged and raped several women he met on Match.com. Marsalis had claimed he was a doctor, a spy and at one time an astronaut. He was a nursing school drop out.

The economy sucks with an estimated 16% unemployment for the college demographic. So Andrea Gillman and Jessica Rivers did what we all dream of doing. They gave the economy the finger and started their own company. After graduating from UCF and finding an inhospitable job market, ironic given that they were hospitality graduates, they launched 10X10 solutions (a trade show marketing firm). 10x10 targets small and medium sized businesses and helps them get noticed during conventions by using models that are not only attractive but informed about the company’s products. After countless hours of bussing tables, 10X10 was the solution to Gillman’s and Rivers’s career problems.
There must be something in the water around Central Florida. As of July 9th Miss Kristina Janolo, a marketing senior at UCF, is the fourth Miss Florida to come from UCF. Janolo’s victory was long awaited, and this time perseverance paid off. She competed in the Miss Florida pageant five times before winning her title. Janolo has been competing in pageants since she was 15 and holds various other titles. She supports a variety of humanitarian and environmental organizations and has her own non-profit organization which aims to help the elderly. Janolo will compete for Miss America on January 14, 2012 in Las Vegas.

The (hopefully) annual event features a beach with constant music and barbecues, a forest that houses hammocks to chill in by day and becomes a glow-in-the-dark wonderland of colorful lights by night, and five stages to continually pump out music for four straight days. You can also find a huge water-park and even a life-sized game of mouse trap. This year’s event included awesome artists such as String Cheese Incident, DJ Tiesto, Bassnectar, and Chiddy Bang, to mention a few.

BASS ISLAND \\ New York, NY, August 13, 2011
For the first time, Bassnectar held the BASS ISLAND festival in New York City, creating “a unique world to explore, beyond the realms of a normal concert experience.” The festival lineup included Lupe Fiasco, Z-Trip, Prefuse 73, Virtual Boy, Dave Nada, and Joro Boro. On Bass Island, Lupe Fiasco successfully surfed the melodic tsunami that is Bassnectar’s womp. He shredded beats, hammered the drums and gave the bass heads something to stomp to. Bassnectar successfully executed their goal of creating an amalgam of music, art, and culture on Governor’s Island.

They also have games and TVs to occupy you, so don’t be surprised to walk in and find Futurama on or an intense game of Scrabble taking place. They’re busiest on the weekend when patrons are looking for a cool place to relax with a beer and enjoy good company. and the order is sent out to the waitress’s iPod Touch as well as the bar. The table tops also have interactive games and chat so you can flirt with the next table. You can even order from your smart phone before you’ve arrived at Touch. mako’s
27 West Church Street Orlando, FL 32801 (407) 420-1111 Mako’s is always a wild time, with cheap drinks, half naked women, and a packed dance floor. The bar backs dance, serve body shots, and help with contests such as shaving whipped cream from a balloon. The crowd is 65% male and ranges in age from mid 20s to mid 50s, so don’t be surprised if you see someone’s dad taking tequila shots from a bartender’s breasts... seriously. One downside is you might need to rest your ears after, because it is quite loud. Overall it’s a pretty good place for rowdy entertainment and dirty dancing, JOINTS WRITTEN BY but I would only go when there’s Amanda Jones no cover.
EYE SPY
54 North Orange Ave Orlando, FL 32801 (407) 246-1599 Eye Spy is a voyeur themed dance club next to the Bar-B-Q Bar and it’s surprisingly cool. At first glance it seems like a small, laid back place, but when you walk in you’re greeted with an energetic and fun crowd. There’s a photo booth and a few “secret rooms” throughout the place. In reality neither are actually secret, because there’s hidden cameras that display it all on the bar TV. Pretty interesting. The drinks are reasonably priced, and the music isn’t bad either. The crowd is very mixed. You never know who you’ll see here. The only downside is it’s very smoky by the pool table area. They’re open all week from 9 pm – 2 am, and on Saturdays from 10 pm – 2 am. This club is situated in an average location, on a street of fast food restaurants and miscellaneous shops, and at 25 minutes is an average distance from UCF. However, the club itself is well above average. Pulse is arguably one the hottest gay clubs in Orlando. Think I’m exaggerating? Try going on a Saturday night and see for yourself. Scantily clad, and fiercely hot, male and female dancers decorate the bar. It has 3 beautiful areas: an outdoor patio for smoking, a pretty big dance floor with a newly renovated bar and very modern lounge area, and another, much darker room with a stage and bar. Improv Comedy
Spooky’s Cafe 207 North Primrose Drive Orlando, FL 32803 (407) 896-2377
If you’re familiar with the Milk District area, then you’ve probably heard of Spooky’s. It’s owned by the same people that run the popular Social Chameleon. If not, consider checking it out. The menu is an eclectic mix of home cooked staples like mac and cheese, new age favorites like umami flatbread, and cafe classics like meatloaf and waffles. The unique thing about the waffles here is you can get them with pulled pork on top. I’m told it’s the most popular menu item. The prices are affordable, ranging from three dollar appetizers to twelve dollar entrees. If you’re a first timer, try to go on a Friday, around 5-ish, just before the crowd pours in for the night so you can feel it out a bit.
9101 International Drive Suite 2310 Orlando, FL 32819 (407) 480-5233 Improv is a great place to catch some of the funniest comedians and a bite to eat. September’s line up includes Kevin Nealon, of SNL , Weeds , and Happy Gilmore , Pablo Francisco, Madtv and Mind of Mencia , and Eddie Griffin. They also showcase lesser known comedians in shows like Florida’s Funniest Comedian and Clash of the Comics . Tickets go for
ten and two dollars respectively. The prices are higher for the bigger acts of course. For example, Kevin’s September show costs $25. The dinner menu is pretty straight forward, and is not included in the ticket costs. Also, all shows are 21 and up. It’s a bit of a drive, about 35-40 minutes from campus, but worth it in my opinion.
Substance 934 North Mills Ave Orlando, FL 32803
Substance is open from 8 pm to 2 am on weekends, and this art gallery/ lounge is perfect for the more indie club goer. Substance boasts this motto on its Facebook page, “Art. Rock. House. Libations. Sound!”, and that’s exactly what you get when you come here. It’s a moderate sized place, and the walls display a variety of paintings. There are some sculpture
pieces as well. The DJ spins rock and house mixes, and even something that sounded a bit disco to me, while the crowd drinks, talks and dances. The atmosphere is very chill, despite the somewhat loud music, and refreshing after weekends of rowdy bars or hip hop clubs. It’s a great place to go for something more artsy or just a mellow night out. ORLANDO version \\ fall 2011 \\ 29
