To inspire the BBC Clan to partner with us in impactful fundraising initiatives, bridging the gap between the College’s income and its aspiration in all facets of boys’ education at Brisbane Boys’ College.

Our Mission

To warmly engage with the entire College community to facilitate fundraising for the promotion of excellence in academic, sporting, service and co-curricular endeavours; for the provision of first-class facilities; and for bursaries to be awarded to boys otherwise unable to access a BBC education due to financial disadvantage.

By playing our role, the Foundation facilitates and fosters the growth and development of the College as an outstanding learning environment and a leading Queensland GPS school.

Our Now

As the fundraising arm of the College, the Directors of the Foundation are committed to ensuring the activities of the Foundation are focused on growing our culture of philanthropy and administering it using best practice corporate governance standards. Our approach encompasses strategic programs that focus on the short, medium and long-term horizons.

Our Future

Ultimately, the Foundation aims to have the financial support to cover our annual commitments to buildings and the current bursaries and to grow the bursary program to enable more boys to attend BBC through an endowment fund in perpetuity. Endowed funds provide confidence to proceed with planning by providing the future financial firepower required to meet needs.

We will achieve this through fostering a deeper culture of philanthropy where supporting the BBC Foundation is engrained in the fabric of the Clan, and ‘going the extra mile’ by providing financial support at whatever level appropriate is just part of the heartbeat of BBC.

Dear Foundation Members and Donors

During the 2022 calendar year, the Brisbane Boys’ College Foundation undertook several fundraising initiatives demonstrating the diverse community at the College.

Many of you will be aware that in early 2022, the College lost one of its most beloved teachers, Mr Chicri Maksoud. Chicri was a passionate mathematics teacher at BBC for over 38 years, as well as an honorary Old Collegian. He long dreamt of a place where students could contemplate and explore mathematical concepts, facts and theorems. To honour his time and contribution to the college, the Foundation established an End of Financial Year Appeal to raise funds for a Mathematics Laboratory named in his honour. I am pleased to advise that thanks to the generosity of all those who donated to this cause, the Chicri Maksoud Mathematics Laboratory will be completed in 2023. I look forward to welcoming you at the official opening.

The Bisset Gallery was officially opened on the 6th of May, attended by many benefactors of the College arts program including but not limited to our College Archivist, Helen Jackson as well as Richard & Jane Bell who worked tirelessly to curate the collection bequeathed to the College by Phil Bisset. We were delighted to hear from Mr Adrian Hunter, who knew Phil and regularly took students to visit the artist in his capacity as a teacher. Adrian’s intimate knowledge of Phil Bisset & the collection, gathered in over 40 years as both a student and head of the College Art Department until 2021, provided us with a rare insight into the generous legacy Phil Bisset bestowed

upon the College.

On 3 September, we held an Evening of Celebration at Brisbane City Hall, which was both a friend-raising and fundraising event. Proceeds from the auction held went to the BBC Foundation. I think those who attended will agree that a brilliant night was had by all. This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate 120 years of this great community.

In October, we held our fourth matched Giving Day. A big thank you to our matching donors who, together with the magnificent BBC community, ensured we reached our goal of raising $250,000. In fact, we managed to exceed this target, which is an exceptional result. On behalf of the BBC Foundation, I would like to thank our supporters for their very generous contributions to Giving Day this year.

The proceeds raised on Giving Day went in part towards the BBC Building Fund. In 2023, these monies will go towards the construction of the first stage of the rooftop terrace for the Resource Centre. It is truly wonderful that our boys and staff will have this new green space, a space to learn and connect. I look forward to sharing the progress of this project with you.

Giving Day also raised funds for the BBC Bursary Program. These generous donations enable us to ensure that we can continue to offer the opportunity of a BBC education to those who otherwise could not afford it.

Throughout the 120 years of BBC’s history, bursary recipients have contributed to the rich tapestry of our College community before going out into the world to make a positive difference.

In November, we were thrilled to announce that Brisbane Boys’ College has partnered with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to create a First Nations Bursary Program. Beginning in 2023, this bursary will provide a high-quality BBC education to ten First Nations students from regional and remote communities across Australia.

The Foundation continues to raise funds via the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF). This year we have raised funds for equipment, coaching and travel across co-curricular sports and activities, including the BBC Cricket 120 Not Out Campaign, the Cricket Enhancement Project and BBC Football and Rowing Equipment.

The College’s staff, students and support community now have access to an incredible new resource following the Bisset Gallery’s official opening in May. Several years of painstaking effort were necessary to curate the collection and make it available on a continuously rotating basis for all to enjoy. The legacy Mr Phil Bisset (OC 1939) bestowed upon the College is a rare privilege for any institution, and we are lucky to have it at our disposal. The intention is not only to utilise this collection for educational purposes but also to share it with our wider community via hosting events and open viewing evenings.

Thank you to my fellow Foundation Directors, Mr Ross Baildon (Finance and Investment Sub-committee Chair), Mr Richard Bell (Bisset Gallery Sub-committee Chair), Mr Andre Casson (Headmaster), Mr Don O’Rorke (Council Representative) and Mrs Vanessa Taylor (P&F Representative) for their continued service on the Foundation Board.

I would like to extend the Foundation’s sincere thanks and best wishes to Mrs Carol Stephens, who resigned from her role at BBC as Community Engagement Manager and Foundation Company Secretary in Term 2 of 2022.

In Term 3 of 2022, we warmly welcomed Ms Morgan Winlaw as the new BBC Foundation and Events Partner, working closely with the Director of School Development and Community Engagement, Ms Hayley Blumenthal. Thanks to both Hayley and Morgan for their hard work in continuing our friend-raising and fundraising efforts in 2022.

Thanks also to Mrs Lauren Davies, the College Financial Controller and Assistant Company Secretary, who has worked tirelessly to manage the Foundation’s financial records.

On behalf of the Brisbane Boys’ College Foundation Board, I would like to thank our community of donors for their support of Brisbane Boys’ College in 2022. We are excited to continue our fundraising and friend-raising efforts in 2023.

MR IAN MACPHERSON Elected Director BBC Foundation Chair

As I reflect on my first year at Brisbane Boys’ College, I am immediately drawn to the extraordinary milestone our school reached. 2022 marked BBC’s 120th anniversary, and the magnificent celebrations to honour this heritage were some of the year’s highlights. Sharing the joys of this significant moment with all in our community left me with an immense sense of pride and humility as I continue our College’s journey as its tenth Headmaster.

The school year was characterised by the hard work of every student, and that diligence was rewarded with the success reflected in our graduating Seniors’ ATAR results. BBC maintained our position as the third-ranked boys’ school in Queensland. 46 BBC students received early offers to attend Australian universities and TAFE institutions. Most notably, 40 percent of our Seniors were in the top 10 percent of ATAR results, receiving 90+ scores. These efforts reflect the wonderful work of our young men performing in unison with their teachers.

The Performing and Creative Arts endure as a beacon of excellence in our school. The Music Department continues to produce works that are of a professional standard. I am awestruck at every one of the many performance events that occur throughout the year. The Drama Department recounted the history of BBC through their original work, BBC Alive. This herculean endeavour brought the history of our school right off the pages and into vibrant life. Visitors to the College do not need to walk very far to realise that BBC has a strong culture of Visual Art. The pinnacle of the Art Department’s work last year was the What Are You Looking At? Exhibition. Witnessing so many outstanding contributions from our students on display at once was an extraordinary experience.

The Green, White and Black spirit was evident through the myriad of sporting endeavours available to our young

men. 2022 afforded our students considerable success across all year levels – a wonderful testimony to the synergy of the coaches and students working in unison to give their best efforts. I remain immensely proud of all BBC athletes, not only for their level of skill but also for their resilience, commitment and sportsmanship.

2022 saw the ‘opening’ of Queensland to the world after two COVID-19-interrupted years. This significant development allowed BBC to return to the world stage. In July, our RoboCup teams had the opportunity to represent Australia at the World Championships in Bangkok, and our Pipe Band returned to Scotland in August to perform at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. These events were highlights in a year of excellence.

My final reflections on 2022 concern the most important thing in any school: our students. I am struck by their maturity, their intelligence and their compassion. From our youngest pupils in Prep through to our Year 12s, I see young men of character and substance. 2022 was a year of much excitement and achievement. We celebrated. We reflected. We have continued to build on the legacy of our past as we advance toward a wondrous future. But that future lies in the hands of the youngest among us. Every day I enter the BBC gates, our Gentlemen of Honour assure me it will be bright.

BBC 120 EVENING OF CELEBRATION

On Saturday, 3 September 2022, our BBC community came together for the 120 Years Evening of Celebration. It was a fantastic night that saw Brisbane City Hall lit up in Green, White and Black. Thank you to the generations of our BBC community who joined us to celebrate this prestigious event. It was a marvellous acknowledgement of the continuing legacy of Brisbane Boys’ College.

All funds raised from the Evening of Celebration will go towards helping our boys thrive for the next 120 years.

EVENING WITH STEPHEN MCGOWN

In August, the BBC Foundation welcomed author and former Al-Qaeda hostage Mr Stephen McGown to the College for an intimate dinner with donors.

On his bucket list trip riding his motorcycle from London to Johannesburg, Mr McGown was kidnapped at gunpoint from a hostel in Timbuktu on 25 November 2011 and held by Islamist militants in the Sahel region of

Northwest Africa for almost six years. To this day, he holds the unenviable title of the longest-surviving Al-Qaeda hostage.

As part of his visit to BBC, Mr McGown also shared his remarkable story of mental strength, physical endurance and resilience with Senior School students at an assembly.

2022 was an incredible year for BBC. From the extraordinary representation in sports and activities to the unparalleled academic achievement, I truly don’t think that the bonds of the College have ever been stronger.

The work of the BBC Foundation is a vital part of this success. Throughout my time at BBC, I have been continually amazed at the sense of community in this place and humbled by its generosity. To know that so many people are supporting you and working to give you the best education possible is an incredible feeling.

The fundraising that the Foundation performs has helped provide every student with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

I also deeply appreciate the Foundation’s commitment to funding bursaries. My time at BBC has given me so much, and I firmly believe that every boy should enjoy the same opportunities.

MESSAGE FROM 2022 COLLEGE CAPTAIN

I also want to say just how much my fellow students have meant to me. It is they who have helped me become a man. I’ve grown in both age and knowledge since I started my BBC journey, as you’d expect any student to, but I’ve grown in love and passion, spirit and brotherhood, as only a Collegian may.

My time at the College has given me hundreds of brothers, and I couldn’t be prouder to have spent the last six years among them. It was the greatest honour to serve the BBC community as the 2022 College Captain alongside Vice Captains Matthew Deighton and Mihir Jha, but all good things must come to an end.

BISSET REPORT

We continue to be guided by the intent of Mr Phil Bisset’s (OC 1939) generous bequest of his art collection to enhance the appreciation of art at the College and in the community in general.

Numerous functions have been held in the Bisset Gallery space, including our Opening Night honouring the bequest. These events serve to make the BBC community proud of the collection and, at the same time, showcase the cultural benefits it can bestow.

There have been visitations from art students to provide a

gallery experience and adopt-a-painting selections from sporting teams and the College Houses to encourage stronger consideration of the work. To facilitate easier access and better management, the digitisation of the artwork is nearing completion, and ongoing conservation of work is being undertaken where required.

Over the next 12 months, there are further plans for more extensive use of the collection by students and the Art Department.

CBA FIRST NATIONS BURSARY PROGRAM

It is our great pleasure to announce that Brisbane Boys’ College has partnered with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to create a new First Nations Bursary Program. Beginning in 2023, this bursary will provide a high-quality BBC education to 10 First Nations students from regional and remote communities across Australia.

Giving each and every young man who comes through our doors the opportunity to succeed and thrive has always been the key goal at the heart of the College’s mission statement. Thanks to the generosity of CBA, we will be able to accomplish that goal with greater effectiveness than ever before as we extend our warmest welcomes to boys who might otherwise not have been able to join our community.

These new students will range in year level from Year 7 to Year 10 and will reside on-campus as boarders. CBA will contribute all school-related costs, including tuition fees, boarding fees and various expenses such as textbook and uniform purchases.

BEQUESTS

One of the most remarkable things about our College is the extraordinary community spirit it fosters among those who pass through its gates. After more than 120 years of continuous operation, BBC has developed a sterling tradition of educating Gentlemen of Honour who have gone on to lead rich and full lives, remaining deeply connected to the bonds they formed and the friendships they made during their time on campus. We’re not just a school; we’re a community and a family.

Our extensive and committed brotherhood of Old Collegians is one of the most profound examples of this. Decades after your time here as students ended, you remain involved with our community and our traditions. Many of our Old Boys like to celebrate their time here by paying it forward for future generations of BBC students. Old Collegians have the option to leave donations to BBC in their will, be it money, items or property. These bequests are used solely to improve our school campus and enhance our students’ educational opportunities. They are maintained by professional fund managers specialising in not-for-profit school endowments to ensure their efficient and responsible use. You can also issue instructions on how your bequest must be used. You can use your donation to fund specific bursaries for students who could not otherwise afford to attend BBC or direct it to the College’s Building Fund.

A notable example of a bequest used to improve the College and benefit all our students is the contribution

of John Noblet (OC 1942). Upon his passing, John bequeathed a generous sum of money to the College that was then used to assist in the building of College Hall and in the complete remodelling of what was then known as Main Oval. John’s generosity allowed for the draining, irrigation, resurfacing and re-grassing of the oval, which was renamed Noblet Oval in his honour upon its completion.

This is one of the more immediately apparent examples of a bequest that has improved our school and campus, but BBC gratefully accepts any and all contributions of any size. Every donation, no matter how large, contributes vital assistance to our efforts to ensure that our school remains a state-of-the-art home away from home for generations to come.

Opinion

We have audited the Financial Report, of the BBC Foundation Limited {the Company).

In our opinion, the accompanying Financial Report of the Company is in accordance with Division 60 of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) Act 2012, including:

1. Giving a true and fair view of the Company's financial position as at 31 December 2022, and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year ended on that date; and

ii. Complying with Australian Accounting Standards to the extent described in Note 1 and Division 60 of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Regulation 2013 (ACNCR).

The Financial Report comprises:

i. Statement of financial position as at 31 December 2022.

ii. Statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, Statement of changes in equity, and Statement of cash flows for the year then ended.

iii. Notes including a summary of significant accounting policies.

iv. Directors' declaration of the Company.

Basis for opinion

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's responsibilities for the audit of the Financial Report section of our report.

We are independent of the Company in accordance with the auditor independence requirements of the ACNC Act 2012 and the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board's APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including Independence Standards) {the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the Financial Report in Australia. We have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with these requirements.
