WELCOME NO TWO JOURNEYS ARE THE SAME. AT BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE

WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON PROVIDING A PROGRAM THAT HONOURS EVERY BOY AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND IS TAILORED TO MEET HIS NEEDS AT VARYING STAGES OF HIS DEVELOPMENT. We hope this booklet provides you with an insight into our Junior, Middle and Senior School programs, the pathway in which students will follow as they transition from boys to young men and the important milestones associated with this journey. As educators we support students in making exciting discoveries and by doing so unlock the potential of each and every young man. I believe our approach, coupled with our exceptional Professional Learning program, is what truly sets us apart from other schools and enables us to create a learning environment in which all young men can thrive. Every boy at BBC is unique and we are incredibly grateful for the way in which each student enriches our entire school community. The opportunity to share in this fascinating journey with not only students but also parents is what continues to excite us as educators. Graeme McDonald HEADMASTER

PREP TO YEAR 3

THE EARLY YEARS, PREP IN PARTICULAR, ARE MUCH LIKE BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS OF A HOUSE; AS WITH A HOUSE, STUDENTS NEED A FIRM FOOTING ON WHICH TO BUILD THEIR SKILLS AND TALENTS. WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM, WHICH NOW STIPULATES VERY SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR CHILDREN, THE EARLY YEARS ARE NOW MORE THAN EVER WHERE THE GROUNDWORK FOR FURTHER LEARNING IS LAID.

Building blocks BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL FOUNDATION Priority is given to literacy and numeracy, with both reinforced and strengthened through learning in other contexts including science, history and geography. At BBC these key areas are addressed through the development of fine motor skills, phonological awareness and habits of mind designed to help students develop strategies for becoming self-directed learners.

1.

Fine motor skills The underlying skills for writing which require the use of the small muscles of the hands. One aspect of fine motor skills is visual motor integration, which is critical for writing. Visual motor integration is the ability to take what you see and work out how to draw it, such as copying the letter ‘a’.

MORE THAN JUST MUSIC Evidence shows that the skills and experiences learnt through music are incredibly transferrable and can: Support literacy and numeracy development through songs, syllable work and musical stories. Help build confidence, self-esteem and expression through creativity and performance.

MUSIC IS AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE CURRICULUM OFFERED FROM PREP RIGHT THROUGH TO YEAR 6. Academic Classroom Music Students in Years 4 to 6 receive one Academic Classroom Music lesson per week with a music specialist. Boys experience and learn about music through a sequential aural-vocal approach. Classroom Choral and Instrumental Music In addition to Academic Classroom Music, boys also receive one classroom choral or instrumental lesson. At the end of each semester, the Junior School comes together in a concert to showcase their musical achievement.

Foster the development of social and interpersonal skills through group activities. Serve to develop aspects of the brain that other subjects don’t address; learning symbols and sounds is like learning a language. 8

Class Instrumental Program Students from Years 4 to 6 are given the opportunity to experience music by learning an instrument, with each student tested aurally and allocated an orchestral based instrument.

Mini-Clinics Boys in Prep to Year 4 have the opportunity to take part in BBC’s Mini-Clinics program, which is designed to encourage their interest in physical activity, develop basic skills and to create a passion for sport. The clinics encompass the Healthy Bodies program, where boys begin to learn the basics of nutrition and healthy exercise practices. The focus however is ultimately on enjoyment, enabling boys to try their hand at a range of sports from cricket through to rugby, football, Australian rules, gymnastics and basketball, prior to participating in the College’s interschool competition.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACCELERATION Many opportunities exist for acceleration in the Junior School, with identified students able to partake in extension activities, within the classroom setting. For example, gifted Year 6 students have the opportunity to complete Year 7 mathematics work as part of the BBC Mathematics Acceleration program. If they continue to operate at this level, by Year 12 they have the option to complete a university subject while at school, which gives them credit towards their degree when they commence tertiary studies.

A strong focus on pastoral care works to encircle the whole child, and his family for that matter, to ensure a smooth transition as boys prepare for their senior studies and journey further into adolescence. What do you enjoy most about your role? It’s hard to articulate let alone quantify the reward that comes from working in this type of environment. I continue to be inspired and excited by the prospects that lay ahead for the Middle School at BBC, whereby innovation, dynamism and energy surrounds the fresh opportunities ushered in with each new cohort. Laughter and humour are essential parts of a happy and thriving community – something of which is plentiful in the school yard and in the classroom at BBC. I am fortunate to work with a team of passionate educators, armed with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Internationally renowned educationalist, Sir John Jones, once said, “Children may forget what teachers made them learn, but they will never forget how they made them feel.” This strikes a cord with teachers universally and particularly here with educators at BBC.

BBC PROVIDES 34 CO-CURRICULAR CHOICES, FOR MIDDLE AND SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS, TO HELP CULTIVATE THE IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS NEEDED - FROM JOINING THE DEBATING TEAM TO TAKING THE STAGE TO RAISING CHARITABLE FUNDS AND, OF COURSE, PLAYING THEIR FAVOURITE SPORT.

SPORT FOR LIFE ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM THE BBC ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO CATER FOR ALL STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF INDIVIDUAL GOALS, WHETHER IT IS PLAYING SPORT FOR ENJOYMENT OR THE START OF AN ELITE DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY. Athletic Development Philosophy The overall education of a Brisbane Boys’ College student embraces many aspects. Within these aspects, the physical, psychological, communication and strategic learning components of a boy’s education can be fostered and nurtured within the College’s Athletic Development Program. Students are encouraged to enjoy their young physical learning environment, before learning to train specifically for their sport. From here, students are encouraged to be accountable to the wider program and learn to create training strategies that are selfgoverned and directed to improving their competitive characteristics. At Brisbane Boys’ College we do not develop boys only for specific sports; rather we develop pre-adolescent boys into strong young men who are capable of undertaking any co-curricular activity they choose to the best of their capability.

Aligning the classroom and the sporting field The program is all encompassing, student focused and designed directly to improve educational outcomes by nurturing the physical, psychological, communication and strategic learning components of a boy’s education. Underpinning the program is Habits of Mind, a set of thinking dispositions, which is embedded in the curriculum throughout the College. The program demonstrates BBC’s commitment to taking an holistic approach to the learning journey.

OUR CO-CURRICULAR VISION To charge each boy to craft ‘the man in the mirror’ To search for the rules that make good self, on each boy’s own terms, and be governed by those rules. To find, name, challenge and dismiss external expectations. To reflect on performance in and contribution to crew, team, club and College honestly, regularly, gently and fairly.

To distinguish the co-curricular program at BBC by leading from the ground up To locate and pursue actions which inspire dedication, conversation, commitment and care of all members of the College. To impress peers, coaches, teachers and parents with an understated and uncompromising attention to detail and effectiveness. To be an exemplar in learning, training and performing the process perfectly.

To apply the goal setting skills learned in the co-curricular program to all other ambitions and endeavours. To be relentless and unforgiving in driving towards our collective success. To challenge barriers to performance quality and commit absolutely to positive transformation. BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE

DESIGNED TO PREPARE AND EQUIP BOYS FOR LIFE AFTER SCHOOL, THE CURRICULUM FOCUSES ON PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE AS WELL AS TRANSFERABLE LIFE SKILLS. Year 10 During this year, boys are introduced to Years 11 and 12 subject areas where possible. As the gateway year to senior studies it allows them to make an informed choice on their senior program and prepares them for the demands of these final years of schooling.

LEARNING

to lead

The College provides many opportunities for boys to develop their personal confidence and leadership skills. Students are encouraged to nominate for official roles of responsibilities in Year 12 including College Prefect and House Captain. Boys elected to these positions act as role models for their peers, represent the school in public forums and foster the spirit of the College amongst students. Boys are also able to develop leadership skills through participation in the Mentor Program, community service campaigns or by captaining a sport or activity. All Year 12 students are recognised as leaders through the transition into a white shirt. As such all our seniors are easily identifiable and act as role models for younger students.

Subjects and Non-Authority

Each year our seniors develop a theme designed to unite the student body and reinforce BBC’s renowned school spirit. The mottos have revealed the common themes of working together, supporting others and mateship - including Brotherhood, Strive and United We Stand. Each year BBC’s Senior Leaders pay a visit to the Prep classroom to

Subjects depending upon their

present boys with a badge based around the

preferred pathway to tertiary

theme.

In Years 11 and 12 boys develop and strengthen their skills in specific interest areas. Students determine their two year course of study when commencing Year 11 and can choose from Authority

studies.

BRISBANE BOYS’ COLLEGE

Spirit that lasts a lifetime AT BBC THE JOURNEY DOESN’T END AT YEAR 12. WE ARE DRIVEN BY A DESIRE TO ENSURE OUR STUDENTS LEAVE THE COLLEGE CONFIDENT IN THEIR SKILLS AND ABILITY TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE 21ST CENTURY. Old Collegians’ Association - a connection for life All BBC students automatically become a part of our Old Collegians’ Association (OCA) upon leaving the College. Why? Because there’s something about staying in touch and keeping the bonds that are formed in a boy’s foundational years. BBC’s Old Collegians’ Association provides past students an opportunity to catch up, network and enjoy all the magnificent traditions that makes BBC especially memorable. The OCA is an important part of the BBC make-up and members help to make a real difference to students (with a number of old collegians part of school based programs), and the wider community.

Founded in the early days of the College, the Old Collegians' Association is designed to establish a strong fellowship between old boys and the College, ensure traditions are maintained and to provide networking opportunities for members.
