Welcome UCI
Parents and Families! Every student who engages in one of our programs is expected to increase their personal knowledge, develop a new skill or learn something new about themselves. We also want students to understand how much their engagement – whether through clubs, government and leadership, events or a host of other opportunities – not only helps them to grow but strengthens who we are as a community.

The UCI campus is an exciting and dynamic place where students will engage in experiences that will be inspirational and life changing, and may also challenge their current thinking while giving them exposure to ideas and cultures different from their own. We value their ability to express their freedom of speech rights in a safe and respectful way. I look forward to meeting your student and learning about their experiences.

We’re always looking for volunteers to host, help greet new families and answer questions. • Parent and Family Coffee Socials Held twice a year, these informal gatherings connect UCI parents and family members in their local communities. Details will be shared during fall and spring quarters. • Anteater Family Weekend and UCI Homecoming Experience life as an Anteater firsthand! Held during Homecoming weekend in early spring, this event provides opportunities to attend faculty seminars, deans’ receptions, workshops, festivities in Aldrich Park and a spirited basketball game.
“As parents, we can dedicate our time and resources to advance the university’s mission – one which enables our students to flourish at UCI and beyond.”
Parents for the UCI Fund The Parent Campaign for Student Success drives parent support to the UCI Fund, providing the university with the ability to support the areas of greatest need on campus. As our diverse student population continues to grow, so does the need for resources. By giving to the Parent Campaign, you’re helping ensure that UCI remains one of the best universities in the country – for your Anteater and many Anteaters to come. connect.uci.edu/parent-campaign

Wellness:
Building Blocks to a Brilliant Future @ucistudentwellness •
@ucistudentwellness
At UCI, students develop life skills and the confidence to become thriving, contributing members of the community. The Center for Student Wellness & Health Promotion (CSWHP) helps students explore how to balance their academic goals with their health and well-being. CSWHP provides guidance and instruction to students on how to maintain their mental, physical and emotional health through development of the eight dimensions of the Wellness Wheel. Your student can make the most of their time at UCI by engaging in activities that explore these dimensions. Making self-care a priority to achieve balance is the conduit to wellness, which is the pathway to both a degree and a brilliant future.

Healthy Transitions: Recognizing Signs of Distress Making new friends, keeping up with academic rigor, adjusting to campus life, missing old friends and juggling other demands can all be overwhelming to students.
• Changes in levels of functioning (e.g., decreased academic performance, social withdrawal)
While most students settle into a routine and adapt well, with change comes stress – even when change is welcome and positive. During this time, it’s common for students to experience a range of emotions including depression and anxiety.
• Paranoia
There are times in which adjustment can be more challenging. Some students may not directly communicate their distress, but their difficulty may be evident in their behaviors or emotional expression. Look for: • Significant changes in sleep or eating habits • Personal hygiene deterioration • Angry or threatening outbursts • Expressing ideas/thoughts of harming themselves or others
• Evidence of drug or alcohol abuse • Forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating • Anxiety or agitation • Low energy level or continuous sadness • Irritability • Significant weight gain or loss • Procrastination The UCI Counseling Center offers a wide range of services and referrals to help students regain confidence. If you believe a student would be helped by therapy, a good way to suggest a counseling visit is to simply listen, express concern and then recommend an appointment.
