Resources for Academic Success
Helping Your Student Succeed in the Classroom
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers over 100 undergraduate degree programs and specialized concentrations. Faculty and staff on our campus are committed to ensuring your student’s academic success. While your student’s academic journey is their own, you can support them by knowing about the various support resources on our campus that help students academically.
University Colleges & Academic Advising
The University has eight academic colleges from which to choose a major. Every student is assigned an academic advisor. It is the advisor’s responsibility to assist the student in course selection each semester. Students may obtain the name and contact information for their academic advisor through ULink. Students are required to meet with their academic advisor each semester before scheduling classes for the upcoming semester.
Student Interaction with University Faculty
The faculty is committed to your student’s success. Encourage your student to visit with their professors and instructors outside of class. Students often hesitate to interact with faculty members and don’t realize how valuable faculty are in assisting them in their courses.

UP is located at the center of campus and our officers maintain 24-hour patrol coverage. They respond to crimes, illnesses, fires, service calls, traffic accidents, and other emergencies.
Clery Compliance
î police.louisiana.edu/jeanne -clery-act
The UL Lafayette Police Department is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for learning and working. Because UP, like many urban campuses, does experience some crime, the UL Lafayette Police Department wants students, faculty, and staff to be aware of crime on campus. The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is a federal law
that requires colleges and universities to disclose annual information about campus crime. You can obtain a copy of this report by contacting UP or visiting their website.
Environmental Health & Safety/ Risk Management
The Office of Environmental Health & Safety (safety.louisiana.edu) manages the UL Lafayette Emergency Notification System (ENS), oversees our hurricane preparedness and response, and informs the campus community of health issues.
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety/Risk Management works to reduce accidents, hazards, and risk exposure by:
• Assigning various safety responsibilities throughout the campus
• Inspecting and maintaining facility building safety systems
• Conducting safety meetings and sending brief health and safety publications to campus personnel to increase awareness and remedy unsafe conditions
• Maintaining the All Hazards Plan for emergency management operations
Emergency Notification System
All students are encouraged to register and update their cell phone number with the University’s Emergency Notification System (ENS). This system will alert students, faculty, and staff of steps to take in case of a campus emergency. Students can view and update their information by logging into ULink (ulink.louisiana.edu) and visiting the Safety & Emergency Notification section within the Campus Services tab. Students can register parents and guardians to receive these emergency alerts as well.

Commonly Asked Academic Questions
How many credit hours should my student schedule?
A first-time freshman should schedule 12–15 hours in the first semester, which is a reasonable load for a first-year student. Whether or not the student must work should be considered in making this decision. Note that if a student schedules fewer hours in any semester than are listed in their curriculum, they may not graduate at the end of eight semesters (four years) unless these hours are made up in another semester or summer session.
How important is class attendance?
Class attendance is incredibly important! Attending class regularly is the easiest thing students can do to ensure a higher class grade. Coupled with an adequate study schedule, students who attend class do better academically than students who skip class. Specific class attendance policies are dictated on course syllabi and are at the discretion of faculty members teaching courses. Extenuating circumstances (extreme illness, family death, etc.) may cause students to miss class for extended periods of time. In these cases, students should contact the Dean of Students Office at (337) 482-6276 or deanofstudents@louisiana.edu to request an extended absence excuse.
How many hours a week should my student study?
In general, a student should be studying two hours outside of class for each credit hour they take per semester. This means that if a student is enrolled in 15 credit hours, they should be spending about 30 hours outside of class per week studying and preparing for class. Many students underestimate the number of hours needed to study and do well in college courses. Encourage your student to spend adequate time studying and preparing. Their coursework should be the first priority.
My student has to work. How many hours should they work per week?
The ideal maximum load for outside employment is 15–20 hours per week. Working more than 20 hours per week can place a strain on a student’s ability to have adequate time to study as well as time for outside interests or obligations. Students who are interested in working on campus can inquire about work-study eligibility and/or availability at the College Work-Study office in Foster Hall 221 or inquire about other (non-federal work-study) on-campus jobs at the Office of Career Services in Agnes Edwards Hall 104.
What does my student need to do to maintain their TOPS eligibility?
Students who receive Louisiana TOPS must complete 24 credit hours in the academic year. Students must be registered for 12 or more credit hours on the 14th class day in order to receive TOPS in any given semester. The total of 24 semester hours for TOPS eligibility can be earned over the course of the fall semester, winter intersession, spring semester, May intersession, and summer terms. Students receiving TOPS must also maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA after the fall semester and a minimum 2.3 cumulative GPA at the end of their first spring semester. A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA is required at the end of their next academic year. TOPS Performance and Honors require at least a 3.0 GPA at all times.

For students receiving TOPS, financial aid, scholarships, or other forms of financial assistance, it is important to check the account statement online. TOPS and other forms of assistance usually do not cover all costs associated with a semester.

Housing Guide
A Note on UL Lafayette Housing Policy
First-time freshmen are required to live on campus unless the student meets one of the following Housing Exemptions:
• The student is married or is a single custodial parent
• The student is at least 21 years of age on or before the first day of classes for the academic year
• The student is living with parents, grandparents, or a married brother/sister within a 40-mile radius of campus and commutes daily
More information on the Housing Requirements can be found online at: housing.louisiana.edu/future-residents/housing-requirements .
We encourage students to live on campus during the entirety of their time at UL Lafayette. Students meeting one of the above exemptions are able to reside off campus. The off-campus housing and apartment advertisements in this guide feature a few local options for students that qualify for a Housing Exemption.
