History NC State has developed into a vital educational and economic resource.

Established March 7, 1887

Founded in 1887, NC State —then known as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts— began classes in the fall of 1889 with 72 students, six faculty and one building. Since then, we've grown to become the largest public institution in North Carolina through our innovative community of faculty, staff and students. Today, the university has over 37,000 students, 9,000 faculty and staff and more than 700 buildings.

1910s

The passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 enabled land-grant colleges to establish state, county and local extension programs to further support their existing work. These new programs allowed the university's knowledge resources to directly benefit the people of North Carolina. By 1918 the college had an enrollment of over 700 students and a new name: North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, or more commonly known as State College.

Historic marker on Hillsborough Street

1920s

In the following decades, State College continued to expand its curricula, creating schools of design, forestry, physical science and mathematics and humanities and social sciences. During these years of growth, the name was changed again—this time to North Carolina State University at Raleigh.

Today

Consistently ranked a national best value and among the nation’s top 100 public universities, NC State is a preeminent research institution, attracting top faculty and students from around the world. Together with our public and private partners, we create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity.

Today the university celebrates its storied history though 10 official hallowed places found across all three campuses. Marked by plaques, the hallowed places range from historic, brick-laden blocks to sprawling acres of lush greenery. The university defines them as “irreplaceable campus buildings, landscapes and natural settings that have accrued special meaning over time.”

All 10 are places of great importance to NC State. Places for quiet, reflective moments or raucous, eruptive celebrations. Places to soak up the first warm day of spring and revel after the last exam of the fall semester. Places that live in the hearts of our students and alumni — even when they’re far from home. Learn more about the hallowed places at go.ncsu.edu/see-hallowed-places.

Pack Leadership

At NC State, you’re a member of the Pack. Here, it’s not about any one of us. It’s about what we Think and Do together...
Dr. Randy Woodson Chancellor

Dr. Randy Woodson is NC State's 14th chancellor serving the largest university in North Carolina with more than 37,000 students.

In 2024, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) recognized Woodson with its Chief Executive Leadership Award for District III, which comprises educational institutions from the southeastern United States. The award honors exemplary leaders who create a vision and inspire others, increase the institution’s stature in the community and encourage innovation among employees.

Under his leadership, the university created and implemented The Pathway to the Future strategic plan that has elevated NC State’s recognition among the nation’s top public research universities. NC State created the “Wolfpack 2030: Powering the Extraordinary” strategic plan in 2021 to build on this momentum and carry the university even further.

NC State has become a lead university for two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers, one Manufacturing USA institute and partner on six others, and expanded to more than 75 industry and government partnerships on its nationally recognized Centennial Campus. NC State has also garnered national and international recognition for its faculty and student scholarship.

Under Woodson’s leadership, NC State has become a preeminent research enterprise known for solving real-world challenges – a true Think and Do university. Woodson’s strategic vision has enabled the university to advance in areas of student success, innovative research and collaborative partnerships. This has resulted in students ready to solve real-world challenges, publicprivate partnerships that transform ideas into solutions, and a creative, engaging center of learning and exploration for all.

In his video interview series, Red Chair Chats, Woodson catches up with high-profile alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the university. No matter who joins him in the red chairs — an athletics icon, a major musician, an alum entrepreneur — you can expect a thoughtful conversation showcasing the strength, talent and innovation of our Wolfpack.
