WELCOME r e BACKmm 2021 u S
Collegiate School Summer Quest 2021 We are back! And we’re glad you are too! Collegiate’s Summer Quest is so happy to have you return to campus. Every year, we are thrilled to offer children and parents a wide selection of old favorite camps as well as exciting new ones. Summer 2021 is no different, but if you are a returning camper, you will see some changes due to COVID-19. In order for us to be in person, modifications have been made to our previous years’ structure to ensure the health and safety of our campers. Please be assured Collegiate’s Summer Quest will be following COVID-19 protocols as established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Virginia Department of Health and Collegiate’s COVID-19 mitigation plan. Please see right column and page 3 for explanations of this new structure. MANY CAMPS FILL TO THEIR MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT. REGISTER EARLY TO RESERVE YOUR SPACE. The Summer Quest Office is located in Luck Hall, on the Lower School Campus. Summer Quest office hours are 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday – Friday. Collegiate School will be closed on Monday, July 5. THE “POD” SYSTEM We will be creating pods of campers each week. Campers will have the ability to choose from three options: a single camp, a combo camp or an all-day camp. Please refer to our Week-by-Week Calendar to see each week’s offerings. • Single camps: One, week-long, half-day camp that takes place in the morning or afternoon where campers participate in the camp and then go home immediately afterward. Please note, campers will not have the option to stay for Lunch Bunch care following a morning camp or before an afternoon camp. If you are interested in a morning and afternoon camp, then you may want to consider a combo camp or an all-day option. Please see below. • Combo camps: These week-long camps combine a morning and afternoon camp to create an all-day experience. In past years, many campers registered for two different camps each week to create an all-day experience. This option allows campers to participate in two camps per week with camp combinations set up by the Summer Quest Office. When signing up, please look under the Combo Camp headings. Our combo camps allow us to create weekly pods where our campers remain for that week and thus limit exposure. Our goal is to create a large variety of camps from which to choose. • All-day camps: A variety of all-day camps in which campers spend the entire day with the same teachers and campers. When signing up, please look under the All-Day Camp headings. Unfortunately, Summer Quest will not be able to offer our Extended Morning Camp nor the very popular Lunch Bunch care as we are working to eliminate exposure. We will still offer Purchased Lunch as an option, however, it will be in the form of a boxed lunch delivered to your camper and each camper will eat lunch with his/her pod. We ask that campers bring a labeled water bottle to be filled throughout the day. We will be offering our Afternoon Extended Camps and registration information can be found on page 47. Enrollment in August camps will be limited, so please sign up early if you are interested. Despite these changes, the goal of Summer Quest, now in its 49th year, is to provide children of all ages in the Greater Richmond area an unmatched variety of challenging, high-quality academic, art, enrichment and sport camps guaranteed to create a summer full of memories. Taught by many of Collegiate’s teachers, as well as the brightest teachers from other schools and organizations in the area, Summer Quest camps keep your student active and engaged over the summer months. Take the time to see what Summer Quest has to offer, learn more about our many camps and register at www.collegiate-va.org/SummerQuest. If you have any questions, please contact the Summer Quest office at 804.665.1750 or summerquest@collegiate-va.org. Welcome back summer camps. Welcome home campers! Due to the ever-changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent guidelines dictated by the Center for Disease Control, Virginia Department of Health, and other governing bodies, the School will continue to assess its operations, and may amend and/or cancel its programs at any time, in its sole discretion. The School will communicate, via email, any such changes.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND COVID-19 PROTOCOLS Collegiate’s COVID-19 Mitigation Plan was informed by eight Vision and Planning Teams, which include trustees, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, doctors and experts from various fields. The teams combined extensive research, emerging best practices and creative approaches to ensure that we are offering the best experience possible in all aspects of school and camp life. We continue to follow the advice of the CDC and VDH, as well as the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), regional, state and national advisors. We are committed to prioritizing the health and safety of every member of the Summer Quest community as we reopen our summer camps. COVID-19 is a fluid situation, and changing local or state guidance could impact some or all of our COVID-19 Plan. We will update and adapt as necessary.

For experienced wrestlers, we will work on specific wrestling skills as well as developing strength and agility, but no prior wrestling skills are required. We encourage everyone to bring any old wrestling shoes you may have. On the first day of camp, we will allow people who need new shoes to try on those that others have donated. Andy Stone is the varsity wrestling coach and a Middle School physical education teacher at Collegiate. He holds a certification with the National Strength Coaches Association, and wrestled and coached at the University of Tennessee.

ACADEMICS
UPPER SCHOOL Rising 9th – Rising 12th Graders
Upper School classes completed by Collegiate Middle School students may be taken for advancement, but will not be credited toward graduation requirements or used in the calculation of a student’s GPA. However, these courses will be recorded on the student’s transcript. All classes meet Monday through Friday, unless otherwise noted. Though the pacing will differ, course content and academic demands remain consistent with the semester-long versions of these electives. For credit classes, students will earn the same ½-credit they would have earned for taking the course in the fall or spring. These courses are also open to non-Collegiate students seeking summer enrichment opportunities.
A student who misses two or more classes in a four-week Summer Quest academic course typically may not receive academic credit for that course.
Non-Credit Courses COLLEGE APPLICATION JUMPSTART – HIT THE GROUND RUNNING Collegiate College Counseling Rising 12th Graders at Collegiate Session I: Aug. 2 – 6 • 9 – 11:30 a.m. Session II: Aug. 2 – 6 • 1 – 3:30 p.m. $215 per session Are you looking to reduce anxiety over organizing your college application process? How about tackling the applications themselves and their essays, or communicating your “demonstrated interest” – whether by phone, email or interview settings? Collegiate’s college counselors take care during the junior and senior years to prepare you well for these tasks, including the summer assignment of a completed application draft, but this “hit the ground running” camp offers you the structure and time on task for an intensive jump-start. Primary topics include: organizing applications, completing online applications, crafting essays, communicating with colleges and essay feedback. You’ll walk away with organizational tools, tasks underway or under your belt and great advice. And, your college counselors are uniquely poised to offer that advice – together, they have more than 60 years of experience in college counseling and admission, and they’ve evaluated more than 30,000 applications as admission officers in highly selective institutions from across the country, including Gettysburg College, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Vermont. This course will be presented by the Collegiate College Counseling staff: Kim Ball, Erin Breese,Brian Leipheimer and Andrew Reich. For more information, contact Kim Ballat kball@collegiate-va.org.

FICTION WORKSHOP Bart Thornton, Ph.D. Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders Session I: June 14 – July 9 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Session II: July 12 – Aug. 6 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday No class on Monday, July 5 $1,095 per session In Fiction Workshop, students will be introduced to a range of strategies and styles for writing creative contemporary fiction. We will read several short stories and a novel. We will also screen several TV shows and films, examining the “tricks of the trade” for writers working in these visual media. You will have the opportunity to “pitch,” write, share and revise a substantive original novella, series of stories, screenplay or teleplay. Along the way, you’ll be introduced to a trivia competition-meets-improvisational game that helps to generate ideas. If you’re interested in creative expression and mass media, this could be a delightful way to spend part of your summer. Dr. Bart Thornton chaired the English department for seven years at Collegiate School, where he now serves as dean of faculty. He teaches American literature, Russian literature, Postmodernism and an interdisciplinary course called Anarchy and the Avant-Garde. Previously, he taught at independent schools in Houston and Chicago. In addition to holding a doctorate in English from the University of Texas at Austin, he writes novels and screenplays. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Bart Thornton at bthornton@collegiate-va.org.
LITERATURE AND FILM CLASSICS Mil Norman – Risch Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 12 – Aug. 6 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday $1,095 This one-semester 1/2-credit Summer Quest course presents literary and film“classics” and interrogates their formal, structural and cultural value. Texts include Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat” and Ian McEwan’s Saturday, as well as a selection of contemporary short fiction and poetry. Our film explorations include the oft-quoted “Odessa Steps”’ sequence from Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 film Battleship Potemkin, along with Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Wes Anderson’s Budapest Hotel and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood. Students learn to distinguish moments of virtuosity and craft – and moral significance – as they become more aware of a writer and filmmaker’s choices. The assessments include reading quizzes, short analysis papers and a research project that culminates in students curating and presenting their own virtual museum of “great works.” Honors students choose from an array of project options in order to explore new media. Among these options are researched essays and independent film viewing with a prepared class lecture. Mil Norman-Risch serves as Upper School Department Chair. She has taught at Collegiate for more than 30 years. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Mil Norman-Risch at mnormanr@collegiate-va.org.

on the importance of revising; therefore, students revise their work throughout the course. Students taking the course for Honors choose from a range of projects to complete an additional six- to eight-page paper. Dr. Angell teaches 9th grade English and junior-senior English electives such as Rhetoric and Composition and Sacred Texts as Literature at Collegiate School. She is the departmental curriculum coordinator for the 9th Grade’s Community Engagement Week, a service-learning program, and she is a member of the School’s Civil Dialogue Task Force. Dr. Angell previously taught at the University of Richmond, Union Presbyterian Seminary, the University of Virginia, and the Peddie School. She also served as the Manager of Museum Educational Programs at the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. Her work has been published in Dapim: Studies on the Holocaust, a journal of the University of Haifa. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Dr. Leah Angell at leah_angell@collegiate-va.org.
Vlastik Svab Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 12–Aug. 6 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday $1,095 The last 17 years of U.S. involvement in conflicts around the globe have fundamentally changed our perspectives of war and those who fight it. At this pivotal juncture in American history, we should explore the literature that has been written about conflict and its effects on those in the battle and beyond. We will read depictions of and reactions to warfare, ranging from the Trojan War to our most recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Texts will include poetry, fiction, nonfiction and graphic media, including work from Kurt Vonnegut, Kevin Powers, Erich Maria Remarque, Garry Trudeau as well as military blogs written directly from the field. The graphic nature of the subject matter will require a serious and thoughtful approach to a topic that has been a persistent presence in society. Vlastik Svab has taught Upper School English at Collegiate for 12 years. Previously, he taught honors and AP English at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans. Along with teaching English 9 and juniorsenior electives, he is also the senior speech program coordinator and an advisor for Collegiate’s online student newspaper, The Match. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Vlastik Svab at vsvab@collegiate-va.org.
Vlastik Svab Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 14 – July 9 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday No class on Monday, July 5 $1,095 Comedian Lewis Black describes fundamentalism as “the inability to laugh at yourself.” Dave Barry defines a sense of humor as “a measurement of the extent to which we realize that we are trapped in a world almost totally devoid of reason. Laughter is how we express the anxiety we feel at this knowledge.” Satire comes in many forms: printed word, image and modern visual media. Scholars, journalists and artists have been mocking social norms and human folly since ancient Greece, and this course will continue the tradition of recognizing the hypocrisies and vices of human society. Notable satirists, including Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Aristophanes, David Sedaris and Joseph Heller, are just a few of the masters of wit and acerbic sarcasm who are both smarter and funnier than you. Vlastik Svab has taught Upper School English at Collegiate for 12 years. Previously, he taught honors and AP English at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana. Along with teaching English 9 and junior-senior electives, he is also the senior speech program coordinator and an advisor for Collegiate’s online student newspaper, The Match. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Vlastik Svab at vsvab@collegiate-va.org.
RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION Leah Angell, Ph.D. Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 14 – July 9 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. No class on Monday, July 5 Monday – Friday $1,095 In Rhetoric and Composition, students examine the art of writing persuasively and the art of composing a piece of writing. Units of study include but are not limited to the following topics: Audience Awareness, Critical Thinking, Literary Style, Description, Narrative, Classification, Process Analysis, Definition, Cause and Effect, and Argument. Study of these subjects revolves around readings from Thomas Cooley’s The Norton Sampler: Short Essays for Composition but also includes other selected opinion pieces, essays and articles. In preparation for future English courses at Collegiate and in college, Rhetoric and Composition further develops students’ writing, revising and researching skills; strengthens students’ skills in careful and critical reading; and introduces students to college composition coursework. In this class, students write frequently, both formally and informally, on topics of their choice. Writing assignments are graded and ungraded and are completed both in and out of class. Students write private journal responses, short experimental pieces, first-person reflections and formal essays. The class focuses heavily on the process of writing and

Taking this class in the summer frees up time in the fall or spring for other pursuits. For more information, contact the Summer Quest Office at summerquest@collegiate-va.org.
“And take upon us the mystery of things as if we were God’s spies ...” – Shakespeare, King Lear The objective of this course is two-fold: 1) To introduce students to the academic study of religion and 2) To survey various topics within the historical, literary and philosophical traditions of the world’s major religions. We will begin by asking some fundamental questions. What is the meaning of religion? What does it mean to be human? What is the relationship between consciousness and religion? Are human beings as human beings necessarily religious beings? In other words, we will consider the possibility that religion is a universal phenomenon – perhaps even a necessary one – in human life. Then, in attempting to survey some of the Bible and some parts of the world’s major religious traditions, we will give some attention to historical and cultural settings, but we will also emphasize the reading of sacred texts and other critical primary source material in order to grasp something of their insight into the basic religious questions. It is hoped that each student will attain an objective yet sympathetic understanding and appreciation of religion and its role in human affairs. Brian Justice began teaching in 1992, and he has taught religion and history at Collegiate School since 1996. He has taught and coached with Summer Quest since 1996. For more information, contact the Summer Quest office at summerquest@collegiate-va.org.
