LET'S GET READY FOR...
The first day of Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten is just around the corner! This camp was developed to provide a glimpse of what Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten will be like for your child. The focus will be on introducing students to these grades through purposeful play Campers will explore the campus and meet the people who will be part of their daily lives in the fall, including the librarian, Centennial Hall staff and the school nurse.
Kindergartners will use familiar nursery rhymes and fairy tales to introduce campers to many important reading skills, such as identifying familiar letters and sounds, looking at pictures for clues, tracking from left to right, pointing to text and matching our voices to the words we read Familiar rhymes and stories will help develop your child’s confidence and eagerness to “have a go” at reading! The math content of our camp focuses on number identification, practicing written number formation, sorting and recognizing, and extending and creating patterns
We utilize many math manipulatives to incorporate the practice of fine motor skills. Card games are also taught as a fun way to reinforce math concepts While campers will think they are just having fun, they will really be strengthening their mathematical abilities, such as problem-solving skills, number sense, spatial skills, memory and much more. There are so many math skills that can be learned from a deck of cards! We will also be visiting the library, creating art projects, playing at center time and getting to know the Lower School campus
Junior Kindergartners will also be introduced to routines such as choice time and morning meeting to foster cooperation, listening skills and positive interactions with classmates.

Awaken the artist within! Using as inspiration the 1956 Palm d’Or winning film "Le Ballon Rouge" (The Red Balloon), campers will spend the week writing, producing, shooting, editing and distributing an original short film. The main objective is to get exposure to each discrete part of the filmmaking process and learn how to take a project from start to finish Our workflow will mirror an actual Hollywood set and, depending on attendance, each camper will have the opportunity to write, direct, act, shoot and light at least one sequence of the film.
Day one (research and writing): We will watch "Le Ballon Rouge" and analyze its narrative and thematic elements Campers will then brainstorm their own ideas based on a few discussed aesthetic principles, agree upon an overarching plot and break out to write their individual sequences.
Day two (pre-production): We will come together to share our drafts, make group edits to ensure high-level continuity and finalize the script Campers will then complete pre-production, wherein each camper will plan their own sequence shoot, including locations (all on campus), props, makeup and wardrobe
Day three (production): Shoot Day The entirety of the day will be spent filming on locations throughout campus Aside from directing their own sequence, each camper will act, operate camera, light or otherwise assist in other campers’ sequences
Day four (production/post-production): Finish principal photography. After “onlining” the raw footage, each camper will begin to edit their sequence using an online editor
Day five (post-production/distribution): Each camper will “lock” their sequence for final edit Then we will make a group final cut of the entire film Finally, the finished film will be available for distribution for each camper’s chosen platform (burned Blu-ray disc or private internet upload) Come make some movie magic with us!
We ask that each child come to every day of camp, as each day builds upon the day before and each individual is important to the experience of the group

THE FINE ART OF ANARCHY
July 10 – August 4 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
$1,095
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, novelists, screenwriters, TV writers and visual artists often practiced the arts of trickery and deception Because there are so many options for entertainment, creative types attempt to surprise, startle and amuse their audiences. They combine previously distinct genres - horror and comedy, for instance, or irreverent sitcoms and hackneyed Hallmark Channel programming - and generally create a kind of healthy havoc
In this course, we will read recent novels and plays, watch scripted and reality TV shows, analyze mainstream and independent films and listen to a variety of musical forms from 1970s punk-rock to this year's hottest singers and bands Students will have the opportunity to research and share their own passions for graphic novels, internet rabbit holes, binge-worthy streaming episodes ("Stranger Things", anyone?) and much more They will also have the chance to see what was considered distasteful and inappropriate in more "dainty decades" (like the 1950s and 1960s)
Dr. Bart Thornton chaired the English department for seven years at Collegiate School, where he now serves as dean of faculty. He teaches American literature, Russian literature, Postmodernism and an interdisciplinary course called Anarchy and the Avant-Garde Previously, he taught at independent schools in Houston and Chicago. In addition to holding a doctorate in English from the University of Texas at Austin, he writes novels and screenplays
Qualified Collegiate students who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English may take this elective for Honors credit However, this will require additional independent reading and writing
