Holiday Book 2014

inside The holidays are a time when families come together to celebrate as one. Where traditions handed down from generation to generation serve as the catalyst for reflection, memories and joy. As Collegiate approaches its Centennial year, The Cougar Shop thought it only fitting to design its Holiday Book around the traditions celebrated by members of the Collegiate Family. Many of these traditions are rooted in cultures from around the world — a nice parallel to Collegiate’s focus on global education. The Cougar Shop invites you to enjoy these wonderful stories (presented with a touch of Cougar) and extend our sincerest thanks to those families who opened their hearts and shared their personal holiday traditions. We also want to thank all of you for your continued support of The Cougar Shop and wish all Collegiate families near and far the warmest of holiday wishes.

BOXING DAY

With the Jupe family

I

n England, the day after Christmas is celebrated as Boxing Day, a holi-

day originally designated as a time for servants to receive a Christmas Box from employers as a gesture of thanks. Today this holiday is often celebrated with a fox hunt or a swim in the English Channel. With neither of these as an option but still wanting to honor their British-born father, Richard, the Jupe family celebrates Boxing Day with an American twist. On December 26, mom MaryHollis, Dad, Austin, Morgan and Alexa embark on a Boxing Day scavenger hunt complete with game playing, task performing and challenging clues. A jolly good time is had by all, ranking this celebration right up there with Christmas Day.

HANUKKAH

T

With the Zasler family he

celebration of Hanukkah, which means

‘dedication,’ refers to the eight days where the Jewish faith commemorates the re-dedication

of their Temple in Jerusalem destroyed by an invading army. Hanukkah signifies the triumph of light over darkness — one oil can kept the Eternal Flame of the Temple burning eight days instead of one — long enough to rebuild the Temple and re-establish religious freedom for the Jewish people. It is best signified by lighting the Menorah, one candle for each of the eight days. For the Zasler family, it has meant teaching Maia and Maytal how to light the Menorah (left to right), giving gifts for each of the eight days, and eating foods cooked in oil such as potato pancakes and jelly donuts. Dreidel games often ensue between the girls and dad, Nathan, using dreidels collected over the years, including a green and gold version of the toy!

SNOWFLAKE GARLAND

With the Bal family

O

ne snowflake turns into 25 and when strung together, be-

comes a meaningful strand of garland hung on the fireplace. Starting on Dec. 1 and each day until Dec. 25, Kindergartner Rajvir shares one thing he is thankful for and then writes it on a snowflake. On Dec. 25, the Bal family reads each snowflake giving thanks for all that Rajvir has listed as well as the family’s many blessings. This tradition will continue as Rajvir grows and each cherished garland will be saved by his mother, Nupur. The hope is that by sharing these priceless keepsakes with his family, he too will continue the tradition of the snowflake garland.

ST. LUCIA DAY

I

With the Buell family

n Scandinavia, Dec. 13 marks the start of the holiday season with a festival of light honoring the patron saint, St. Lucy. The

tradition states the oldest daughter wakes up early to prepare a breakfast of coffee and saffron buns (Lussekater) that are then served to her parents. This tradition has been shared with many Collegiate students over the years by the Buell family. During Ben and Greer’s Lower School years, their mom, Ingrid, would enter the classroom wearing the customary white gown with a red sash and a crown of greens. The beauty and serenity of the moment was topped only by the delicious cinnamon rolls and the Swedish gingerbread cookies (pepparkakor) graciously prepared by the Buells for all to enjoy.

O CHRISTMAS TREE With the Groce-Wright family

O

ne of the great family debates every year occurs when picking out the

Christmas tree. For the GroceWright family, the search for the perfect tree became an opportunity for Nigel, Carson and their parents, Cheryl and Richard, to carry on a family tradition and to spend quality time together. With fond memories of her father cutting down a tree on Christmas Eve, Cheryl started the tradition with her own family, when Carson was a baby bundled up in a kiddie backpack on her shoulders. As the years progressed, the family would head out to Hanover to cut down a tree, enjoy a hayride in a wagon and share many a joyful laugh together. These wonderful memories are still created today as the thrill of the search and the satisfaction of cutting down their own tree makes for precious family memories.

ELF ON THE SHELF With the Flynn family

A

s we all know, Santa sends his elves to see who is being

naughty and nice. At the home of Kindergartner Gabrielle and her younger sister, Victoria, Elfie comes to visit the day after Thanksgiving and stays until Christmas Eve for that very purpose. Before Elfie heads back up north, he mysteriously leaves a present for each member of the Flynn family. Inside can be found warm and cozy matching pajamas which the entire family wears as they eat popcorn and watch a movie selected for them by Elfie. This Christmas Eve tradition, complete with family snuggling, is a great way to end the very hectic holiday season. 14 Holiday Book 2014

GIVING BACK

T

With Alton Lane raditions, especially with family, have been an integral part of Peyton Jenkins’ life. One such tradition occurred

each Christmas Eve when all the men of the family would pile into his grandfather’s car and buy as many groceries as possible to deliver to a family in need. The only request made by his grandfather was for the family to do the same for another family. This same spirit serves as inspiration for Peyton as co-founder of Alton Lane, a company that seeks to make a profound impact on the lives of others — colleagues, customers, supporters and the cities in which it operates. Peyton attributes the man he is today to the values instilled in him by his family and the education he received during his 13 years at Collegiate. He is thankful for the teachers, administrators, coaches and friends (even Mrs. Jones, with her warm smirk, every time he’d walk by her desk) and the School’s support of his family. For that reason, Peyton is honored to give back with the Alton Lane Scholarship Fund which seeks to marry passion, scholarship and commerce to better the lives of those less fortunate.
