Collegiate School Junior Kindergarten

JUNIOR KINDER PLAY is the work of a 4-year-old and it’s important work.

Purposeful Play is at the center of our Junior Kindergarten curriculum. Each area of learning and development is implemented throughout the day with a mix of adult- and child-initiated activity. At the end of this unique year, our JK students will be wellprepared to take their next step into Collegiate’s Kindergarten program.

Through all types of play, students learn to question, explore, make predictions and then see if their predictions are right.

In short, they learn to think.

Involvement with Collegiate Community

The Collegiate Experience Based on the following areas of learning and development, our program has been designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.

Social & Emotional Development With an emphasis on the Collegiate Shared Values, teachers help children mature and grow socially and emotionally, thus nurturing self-confidence and joy. Children are encouraged to develop positive and respectful relationships.

Communication and Language Through a rich language environment, children’s receptive and expressive communication skills are fostered. Opportunities for listening, speaking and self expression are woven into each day.

Understanding the World Teachers help students make sense of their place in the world through authentic projects, which stimulate and develop students’ abilities to see, touch, hear, smell and taste their environment. Science, Social Studies, Spanish and Technology are embedded in these topics.

Physical Development Gross motor coordination, control and movement are developed, as students actively participate in a range of physical activities. The importance of living a healthy lifestyle is explored. Fine motor skills, essential for Kindergarten readiness, are developed.

Expressive Arts

Math

A variety of activities, such as dance, art, movement, drama and role play are part of the daily classroom experience. Social and emotional development is nurtured through these types of projects, which replicate real world situations.

Through explorations, experiments and inventions math is naturally embedded in the daily life of the classroom. Our early mathematicians develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills using real materials.

Language Arts

Engineering

The language-rich environment permeates every aspect of our JK program. Passion for reading and writing is ignited through our multi-sensory approach. Many early literacy skills are introduced including linking letters and sounds, beginning reading strategies and developmentally appropriate handwriting.

Developmentally appropriate manipulatives and toys are readily available for building and integrated into our everyday projects.

Technology An appropriate balance of cutting-edge technology is introduced and utilized throughout the year in order to enhance students’ learning.
