Summer Quest

Academics

Upper School

Upper School courses completed by Collegiate Middle School students may be taken for advancement, but will not be credited toward graduation requirements or used in the calculation of a student’s GPA. However, these courses will be recorded on the student’s transcript. All classes meet Monday through Friday, unless otherwise noted. Though the pacing will differ, course content and academic demands will remain consistent with the semester-long versions of these electives. Students will earn the same ½ credit they would have earned for taking the course in the fall or spring. These courses will also be open to non-Collegiate students seeking summer enrichment opportunities. A student who misses two or more classes in a four week-long Summer Quest academic course typically may not receive academic credit for that course.

For Credit Classes 20th Century History Brian Justice, Brad Cooke Rising 10th – Rising 12th Graders Session I: June 10 – July 5 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm (Cooke) Session II: July 1 – July 26 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm (Justice) Monday – Friday No class on Thursday, July 4th $1,095 (Students will use the 9th grade text, The Heritage of World Civilizations.) This is a required course for 10th graders at Collegiate. Modern World History 9 is a prerequisite for taking this class. This ½ credit course includes the study of World War I, World War II, the rise of Communism, the rise of Fascism, the Holocaust, the Cold War, Decolonization, the Vietnam War, Watergate, the Reagan Revolution and present-day China’s impact on the world. This course encourages student participation in a lecture style format. In addition, students will research and write a term paper on an approved topic. Brian Justice began teaching in 1992, and he has taught religion and history at Collegiate School since 1996. He has taught and coached with Summer Quest since 1996. Brad Cooke is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. He is entering his 3rd year at Collegiate and his 15th year as a teacher. He has taught in schools in Virginia, Tennessee, and Colorado. Brad looks forward to his third summer teaching 20th Century History. For more information, contact the Summer Quest office at summerquest@collegiate-va.org.

Fitness and Nutrition Mark Palyo Rising 9th – Rising 12th Graders June 17 – June 28 • 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Monday – Friday $200 This is a required course for Upper School Collegiate students to meet the requirement for one-half of Health and Wellness II. Taking this class in the summer frees up time in the fall or spring for other pursuits. This twoweek, ¼ credit summer course will cover different aspects of nutrition and fitness. Students will study nutrition related to current events, how nutrition relates directly to health, the nutrition tools that are available on a daily basis and how the digestive and immune systems work. We will also examine the main food nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Participants will be able to plan a healthy diet and explain how food and fitness relate directly to energy and a healthy body. Mark Palyo has taught Fitness and Nutrition in the Collegiate Upper School since 1999 and also has taught and coached with Summer Quest since 1999. For more information, contact Mark Palyo at mpalyo@collegiate-va.org.

ENGLISH Classes

the University of Texas at Austin, he writes novels and screenplays. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Bart Thornton at bthornton@collegiate-va.org.

While a student may take more than one ½ credit English elective during the summer session, only one per year may be substituted for an academicyear semester course. Regardless of summer elective work, every Collegiate student must have at least one English course at Collegiate School during their junior and senior years.

Literature and Film Classics Mil Norman-Risch Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 10 – July 5 • 9:00 am – 1:30 pm Monday – Friday No class on Thursday, July 4th $1,095 This course presents literary and film “classics” and proposes that the presence of structural design and complexity is what makes a work of art “great” or “worthy.” The “great works” we read and examine – through discussion, quizzes, projects and papers – are Shakespeare’s Hamlet, T.S. Eliot’s poetry, short stories by William Faulkner and James Joyce, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, Sergei Eisenstein’s “Odessa Steps” sequence from Battleship Potemkin, Carl Dreyer’s 1928 film The Passion of Joan, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, and Frances Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Expect to distinguish moments of virtuosity and craft – and moral significance – as you become more aware of an artist’s use of compositional technique. Mil Norman-Risch has taught English in the Collegiate Upper School since 1988. She has written and published poetry, essays, textbooks and fiction and has received numerous awards. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Mil Norman-Risch at mnormanr@collegiate-va.org.

Fiction Workshop Bart Thornton, PhD Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 10 – July 5 • 9:00 am – 1:30 pm Monday – Friday No class on Thursday, July 4th $1,095 Designed for students who have shown an aptitude for creative writing and thought, Fiction Workshop focuses on contemporary literature and fiction writing. In some ways the class will resemble the prototypical English class: you will read, discuss, and write about the material you have read. On the other hand, the vast majority of work you produce will be creative rather than critical. By course’s end, you will have written three strong stories and a compelling novella (several chapters in length). This work – presented in an “anthology” along with some of your favorite pieces by your peers – will serve as a testament to your originality and diligence as a fiction writer and editor. Dr. Bart Thornton has chaired the English Department for six years at Collegiate School, where he teaches American literature, Russian literature, fiction, and an interdisciplinary course called “Anarchy and the AvantGarde.” In addition to holding a doctorate in English from

NEW! Satire

Vlastik Svab Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 10 – July 5 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm No class on Thursday, July 4th Monday – Friday $1,095 Comedian Lewis Black describes fundamentalism as “the inability to laugh at yourself.” Dave Barry defines a sense of humor as “a measurement of the extent to which we realize that we are trapped in a world almost totally devoid of reason. Laughter is how we express the anxiety we feel at this knowledge.” Satire comes in many forms: printed word, image and modern visual media. Scholars, journalists and artists have been mocking social norms and human folly since ancient Greece, and this course will continue the tradition of recognizing the hypocrisies and vices of human society. Notable satirists, including Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, Stephen Colbert, Stanley Kubrick, David Sedaris and Joseph Heller, are just a few of the masters of wit and acerbic sarcasm that are both smarter and funnier than you. Vlastik Svab has taught Upper School English at Collegiate for six years. Along with teaching English 9 and junior/senior electives, he is also the Senior Speech program coordinator and an advisor for Collegiate’s online student newspaper, The Match. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Vlastik Svab at vsvab@collegiate-va.org

NEW!

Literature of Conflict Vlastik Svab Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 8 – August 2 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 Our nation is at war. At this pivotal juncture in American history, we should explore the literature that has been written about conflict and its effects on those in the battle and beyond. We will read depictions of and reactions to warfare, ranging from the Trojan War to today’s conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Texts will include poetry, fiction, non-fiction and graphic media, including work from Anthony Swofford, Stephen Crane, Erich Maria Remarque, Garry Trudeau and military blogs written directly from the field. The graphic nature of the subject matter will require a serious and thoughtful approach to a topic that has been a persistent presence in society. For more information, contact Vlastik Svab at vsvab@collegiate-va.org.

“Love that you added more academic options this year! My child received lots of individualized attention. Taking this class during the summer allows my son time for another AP class this year.”

Poetry Workshop

Disunited Kingdom

Pete Follansbee Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 8 – August 2 • 9:00 am – 1:30 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 In Poetry Workshop, you are the writer as you learn how to generate, refine and polish your original pieces by working in free verse, prose poetry and surrealistic poetry, as well as in form, pattern and meter. You will stretch your writing limits, but also discover your own style and voice, through both composing and critique. With your classmates, you will also go on a field trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to write a poem in dialogue with a favorite work of art. You will draft, critique and revise, as you compile your work in an actual and an online portfolio. Among other culminating “events” will be a class reading and the christening of your own poetry website with recordings of your readings of your semester’s work. Throughout the course, to spur and inspire your writing, you will read poets such as Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Bishop and Billy Collins; formalists such as Richard Wilbur and Donald Justice; and surrealists such as James Tate, Russell Edson and John Ashbery. Pete Follansbee teaches English 10, Science Nature Spirit Soul, and Poetry Workshop at Collegiate School. He holds a BA in English from Hamilton College in upstate New York and an MFA in poetry from The University of Iowa Writers Workshop. His most recent publication was in The Georgetown Review, Spring 2009. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Pete Follansbee at pfollansbee@collegiate-va.org.

Bart Thornton, PhD Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 8 – August 2 • 11:30 am – 4:00 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 In the years after World War II, a newly empowered group of English writers, intellectuals, filmmakers and musicians gave voice to the nation’s sadness and rage. These artists crafted narratives with an anarchic energy, fueled by a desire to create new modes of expression. In addition to addressing a radically changed circumstance – Great Britain’s new powerlessness on the world stage – these artists exposed the effects of the long-standing imbalances between classes. In this elective, we will focus on the fiction, drama, and culture of contemporary England. Our work on rebellion in English culture will be informed by our analysis of punk-rock and post-punk bands and experimental filmmakers whose explorations showcase the same oppositional energy that characterizes the work of the era’s key British writers. Microbiology Pascal Losambe Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 10 – July 5 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm Monday – Friday No class on Thursday, July 4th $1,095 Your body contains more bacterial cells than human cells. Therefore, it is important to gain knowledge about the invisible world of microorganisms that exists both on the inside of the body and on the outside. Bacteria are known to produce gold nanoparticles, make ice, glow in the dark, respond to magnetic fields, survive in boiling water, clean up oil spills, turn milk into yogurt, secrete vitamins essential to our health and much, much more. In this microbiology class, students will become proficient in understanding the foundational principles of microbiology and acquire fundamental laboratory skills. A large component of the course will focus on studying microbiology in a real world context. For example, students will test the efficacy of popular household cleaners and detergents, examine the ability of food preservatives to inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria and make bacteria glow in the dark. There will be field trips to industries that utilize microbiological methods such as breweries, farms, research and medical technology laboratories. Pascal Losambe holds a BA in molecular biology and biochemistry and master’s degree in biology. He is in his second year at Collegiate and teaches introductory biology courses and coaches track and field. Prior to Collegiate, Pascal was at Boston College researching neurological disorders associated with HIV. For more information, contact Pascal Losambe at pascal_losambe@collegiate-va.org.

While a student may take more than one

½ credit science elective during the summer session, only one per year may be substituted for an academic-year semester course.

Human Genetics Kelly Tracy, PhD Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 8 – August 2 • 8:00 am – 12:30 pm Monday – Friday $1,095 20,000 genes function in every one of your cells to determine what you look like, what diseases you might be susceptible to, and even how you behave to some extent. This ½ credit science elective will help students understand how genes work and what the future of genetic medicine might hold. During the course, students will use DNA technology in the lab to investigate the structure and function of DNA including hands-on experience in isolating, amplifying, and analyzing DNA. Students will study how genes are inherited, explore the nature of inherited diseases, look into the reasons why identical twins aren’t really identical, and discover the nature of how genes and environmental influences together shape who we are. Additionally, students will learn about and discuss the bioethical issues that arise with new genetic technologies. This course is an excellent class for students who are interested in learning more about how genetics applies to humans and for students preparing to take AP biology in the future. The textbook for this course is Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications, 10th ed. by Ricki Lewis and it is available in hardback and electronically. NEW!

21st Century Parents: Finding Balance Marella Gregory June 25 - 27 • 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm (Tuesday – Thursday) $150 Parent coach and blog author Janet Carter describes one of the more challenging parts of being a parent is the given that “there are very few absolutes. Despite our efforts for control, rules, and order... most of life is grey. Consequently, sometimes what is normally an ‘Absolutely not!’ becomes a ‘Go for it!’ What might normally be a [firm] ‘No!’ becomes a [softer] ‘Yes.’ And sometimes what is absolutely forbidden becomes not only permissible, but necessary.” Come join Collegiate Lower School Counselor Marella Gregory, and guest speakers Janet Carter (‘Our Childish Ways’ writer, speaker and parent coach) and Collegiate Upper School Counselor Alex Peavy as they explore with you important family and parenting topics like technology, bullying, anxiety, transition, developing sportsmanship in the pursuit of excellence, diversity in education, best practices for communicating successfully, and much more. Topics promise to be pertinent to participants in this new course offering because YOU will take part in topic selection after registering for the program. Join us and other parents who are interested in working toward striking a healthy balance of the many issues and possible solutions that we face today as parents in the 21st century. Rest assured, the “tried and true” will also be well represented in this progressive and interactive course offering. For more information, contact Marella Gregory at mgregory@collegiate-va.org.

Yoga offers many physical, mental and emotional benefits for everyone. Physically, yoga can increase flexibility, strength and balance by strengthening and lengthening the body’s muscles. It can also enhance concentration and bring about feelings of calmness and relaxation. Adult and teen yoga classes are level 1 practices designed to incorporate basic yoga postures, breath awareness and a short-guided relaxation period. Postures will be modified to meet the individual needs of each student and can be made more challenging if desired. Participants can expect detailed instruction to get in and out of poses and will have the option of hands on adjustments to help align or deepen certain poses. After warming up, Vinyasa (flowing from one posture to another) will comprise about 30 minutes of each class followed by some restorative poses and finally a short relaxation period. Previous yoga experience is not required but is always welcome. Sarah Peavey is a graduate of the 200-hour Teacher Training program from Glenmore Yoga and Wellness Center and is currently in the process of completing her 500-hour training with an emphasis on therapeutic yoga there as well. Sarah enjoys the many physical, mental and emotional benefits of Hatha yoga of all levels. She is excited to offer yoga to Collegiate students, faculty, staff, parents and the community this summer.
