Building Imaginations – Architecture for Little Hands and Big Minds Shannon Dowling, Juicebox Architects Rising 3rd – Rising 5th Graders June 15 – 19 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. $215 • Bring a healthy snack and filled water bottle from home each day. Building is fun, tangible and part of our everyday experience. Juice Box Architects teaches kids about the built environment by exploring art, social studies, language arts, history, science and math through hands-on activities designed to encourage creative, outsidethe-box thinking. Architecture helps with visual learning, observation, reasoning and critical thinking. The camp will engage children physically and mentally as they use their imaginations and become designers for a week. We will design floor plans and build a miniature neighborhood, take a look at structural concepts by creating toothpick bridges, and engage in discussions about scale, foundation, loads and aesthetics by designing skyscrapers that scale the walls of our school. Campers will learn about structures using our own bodies as support columns, we will make our own stools that can hold our parents and we will even build a geodesic dome that campers can occupy! We will work as individuals and in groups to look at real-life problems and simplified versions of what architects do each day. This camp is ideal for children who like to create, draw and build – children who aren’t afraid to be original, take risks, explore new ideas and even get a little messy! Shannon Dowling has both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in architecture. She has worked on everything from schools to libraries to home additions. She studied design and practiced architecture not only in her hometown of Richmond, but also in New York and Los Angeles. Her work has been included in a number of exhibits, including the Biennale in Venice and at the Dia Center for the Arts in Manhattan. She has three young children of her own and loves building young creative minds as much as she loves architecture. For more information contact Shannon Dowling via Facebook at www.facebook.com/juiceboxarchitects or visit the website at www.juiceboxarchitect.com.

“ The Introduction to Chinese camp made me want to enroll my son at the Collegiate School. I really did not know how much he would like the class or what he would learn. I was amazed every day! Our son could not wait to bring his notebook home to share what he learned. He was speaking in full sentences. Mrs. Ferguson even got him to try Chinese food! For the first time ever we had to ask him why he was so quiet and still in class - he said he liked it and was concentrating.”

Steve Hart Rising 1st – Rising 4th Graders June 15 – 19 • 1 – 4 p.m. $230 • Projects and activities will be adjusted for grade level. This camp allows your child to be immersed in the world of fine woodworking through the safe use of bronze planes, straight and curved chisels, specialty saws, measuring and marking tools. Woodworking at Collegiate identifies naturally as craft, but it also provides opportunities for individual artistic expression. Prior skills of arithmetic and language are summoned, and the emphasis is on developing a plan and executing it to conclusion. Each camper is given their own set of materials and will not only create 2-3 individual projects to take home, but will also work together to create one larger piece of woodwork. The process will mimic an 18th-century master/apprentice model whereby an adult craftsman would literally work alongside a child – designing, cutting, shaping, and fitting assorted components into a final product. Let your child come make some noise with a mallet and cut some long wood shavings on the way to a beautiful result. Steve Hart has taught woodworking at Collegiate School for 14 years. He is an attorney who has worked for the same period of time in the Collegiate Development Office as Planned Giving Officer. For more information, contact Steve Hart at shart@collegiate-va.org.

Un Repaso de Español Erica Coffey Rising 9th – Rising 12th Graders July 20 – 24 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. $215 per session Okay, the summer is almost over and now it’s time to learn some basics or review your Spanish-speaking skills and be ready for fall classes. In this class, beginning students will learn to understand simple messages in daily life and to express themselves in basic, everyday situations. The curriculum centers on oral and written exercises that introduce students to the Spanish language from a communicative point of view. It provides an initial approach to the social and cultural domains of the language. Intermediate students will expand on their basic skills in order to express complex ideas and arguments, as well as read and understand more difficult texts. The course also offers material to expand awareness of the cultural and linguistic differences of Spanish. All the different elements of the language will be covered: writing, listening, speaking and reading. In addition, students will develop understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic culture, review basic vocabulary and learn basic grammar structures that will allow them to communicate in real and meaningful situations. This is a great class for students hoping to energize the new school year already having practiced their Spanish. Erica Coffey has been teaching Spanish for 15 years. She currently teaches in the Upper School and is the Director of Community Outreach at Collegiate School. She has traveled to Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. Her passion for the Spanish language is illustrated through her interaction with her students and her own children who are becoming fluent. For more information, contact Erica Coffey at ecoffey@collegiate-va.org.

Credit Classes NEW!
ENGLISH Classes
Irish Literature
While a student may take more than one ½ credit English elective during the summer session, only one per year may be substituted for an academic-year semester course. Regardless of summer elective work, every Collegiate student must take at least one English course at Collegiate School during their junior and senior years.
David Stillman Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders July 6 – 31 • 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Monday – Friday $1,095 Ireland is a unique place – an island country situated at the periphery of western Europe, a region historically removed, unlike the rest of Europe, from the influences of Rome and the Renaissance, a Celtic nation with its own idiosyncratic language. Ireland has an embattled history, its people subject to a thousand years of invasions – from the Vikings to myriad generations of English conquerors – and an aptly complex culture. While geographically smaller than Indiana, Ireland has produced no fewer than four Nobel Laureates in literature in the last hundred years. This course will explore modern Irish literature from the late 19th century to the present. We will survey multiple genres – the short stories of Joyce; the poetry of Yeats, Heaney, Boland, Muldoon and others; the plays of Synge, O’Casey, Beckett and Friel. Concurrently, we will investigate the connections between literature, history, mythology, religion and politics – an inquiry for which Ireland provides a particularly compelling laboratory. Additional course themes will include the idea of cultural nationalism – the ways in which literature informs conceptions of cultural and national identity – the notion of exile, and the effects of Modernism and other aesthetic movements on Irish writers. David Stillman has taught English at Collegiate for two years. He is a graduate of Washington & Lee University and Middlebury College. Before moving back to his home state of Virginia, David taught English at Suffield Academy (CT) and Windward School (Los Angeles), serving as department chair at both schools. He is a career swimming and water polo coach and an avid musician. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact David Stillman at david_stillman@collegiate-va.org.
Fiction Workshop Bart Thornton, PhD Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders Session I: June 8 – July 2 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Session II: July 6 – 31 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday $1,095 per session Designed for students who have shown an aptitude for creative writing and thought, Fiction Workshop focuses on contemporary literature and fiction writing. In some ways the class will resemble the prototypical English class: you will read, discuss and write about the material you have read. On the other hand, the vast majority of work you produce will be creative rather than critical. By course’s end, you will have written three strong stories and a compelling novella (several chapters in length). This work – presented in an “anthology” along with some of your favorite pieces by your peers – will serve as a testament to your originality and diligence as a fiction writer and editor. Dr. Bart Thornton chaired the English Department for seven years at Collegiate School, where he now serves as Dean of Faculty. He teaches American literature, Russian literature, Postmodernism, and an interdisciplinary course called “Anarchy and the Avant-Garde.” Previously, he taught at independent schools in Houston and Chicago. In addition to holding a doctorate in English from the University of Texas at Austin, he writes novels and screenplays. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an A- average or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Bart Thornton at bthornton@collegiate-va.org.

Health & Wellness Classes All Collegiate students must complete Health and Wellness I and Health and Wellness II, each 1/2 credit. A student may take both sections of Health and Wellness II (Driver’s Education and Fitness and Nutrition) during the summer. This will allow for room in the student’s schedule during the school year.
Fitness and Nutrition Rising 9th – Rising 12th Graders June 15 – 26 • 1 – 3 p.m. Monday – Friday $200 This is a required course for Upper School Collegiate students to meet the requirement for one-half of Health and Wellness II. Taking this class in the summer frees up time in the fall for other pursuits. This two-week, ¼ credit summer course will cover different aspects of nutrition and fitness. Students will study nutrition related to current events, how nutrition relates directly to health, the nutrition tools that are available on a daily basis and how the digestive and immune systems work. We will also examine the main food nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Participants will be able to plan a healthy diet and explain how food and fitness relate directly to energy and a healthy body. For more information, contact the Summer Quest Office at summerquest@collegiate-va.org.

Rhetoric and Composition Allen Chamberlain, Allison Seay Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 15 – July 10 • 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Monday – Friday No class on Friday, July 3 $1,095 This course will make use of the immersion aspects unique to summer study as we engage in careful and contemplative reading and writing in order to understand rhetorical strategies and design concepts. We will practice the art of persuasion and argument while appreciating style, structure, form and design. The course will include a special emphasis on visual rhetoric and design, ekphrasis, observation and experimentation. We’ll use Richmond as our writing studio, visiting places that prompt us to redefine how the city influences our lives. We’ll engage with graphic design as visual rhetoric in the creative community of RVA, and we’ll find inspiration at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as well as in contemporary galleries and street murals. This class is perfect practice for students who wish to explore college application ideas, senior speech topics, personal narratives, visual art and both traditional and experimental writing. Allen Chamberlain has been Head Librarian at Collegiate School for twenty-eight years, in the Reed-Gumenick Library and now in the Upper School’s Saunders Family Library. She teaches in the English Department, What Do I Know? Explorations in Creative Non-Fiction, and a Senior Seminar in the history of Richmond. In 2010 she received the Joanne Pratt Award for Teaching Excellence. Her poems have appeared in Sound & Sense: Virginia Poets and Their Students, Raleigh Review, Pembroke Magazine, and atLength. Allison Seay has taught English in the Upper School since 2013. She has held teaching positions at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Lynchburg College, and the University of Mary Washington. She is the author of To See the Queen, a book of poems, and the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Qualified Collegiate students – those who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English – may take this elective for Honors credit. This will, however, require additional, independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Allen Chamberlain at achamberlain@collegiate-va.org or Allison Seay at allison_seay@collegiate-va.org.

SCIENCE Class Microbiology Pascal Losambe Rising 11th – Rising 12th Graders June 8 – July 2 • 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Monday – Friday No class on Friday, July 3 $1,095 Your body contains more bacterial cells than human cells. Therefore, it is important to gain knowledge about the invisible world of microorganisms that exists both on the inside of the body and on the outside. Bacteria are known to produce gold nanoparticles, make ice, glow in the dark, respond to magnetic fields, survive in boiling water, clean up oil spills, turn milk into yogurt, secrete vitamins essential to our health and much, much more. In this ½ credit microbiology class, students will become proficient in understanding the foundational principles of microbiology and acquire fundamental laboratory skills. A large component of the course will focus on studying microbiology in a real world context. For example, students will test the efficacy of popular household cleaners and detergents, examine the ability of food preservatives to inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria and make bacteria glow in the dark. There will be field trips to industries that utilize microbiological methods such as breweries, farms, research and medical technology laboratories. Pascal Losambe holds a BA in molecular biology and biochemistry and received his master’s in biology. He is in his fourth year at Collegiate and teaches introductory biology courses and coaches track and field. Prior to Collegiate, Pascal was at Boston College researching neurological disorders associated with HIV. For more information, contact Pascal Losambe at pascal_losambe@collegiate-va.org.
“And take upon us the mystery of things as if we were God’s spies...” – Shakespeare, King Lear The objective of this course is two-fold: 1) to introduce students to the academic study of religion, and 2) to survey various topics within the historical, literary and philosophical traditions of the world’s major religions. We will begin by asking some fundamental questions. What is the meaning of religion? What does it mean to be human? What is the relationship between consciousness and religion? Are human beings as human beings necessarily religious beings? In other words, we will consider the possibility that religion is a universal phenomenon – perhaps even a necessary one – in human life. Then, in attempting to survey some of the Bible and some parts of the world’s major religious traditions, we will give some attention to historical and cultural settings, but we will also emphasize the reading of sacred texts and other critical primary source material in order to grasp something of their insight into the basic religious questions. It is hoped that each student will attain an objective yet sympathetic understanding and appreciation of religion and its role in human affairs. Brian Justice began teaching in 1992 and he has taught religion and history at Collegiate School since 1996. He has taught and coached with Summer Quest since 1996. Brad Cooke has taught at Collegiate since 2011 and this is his 16th year as a teacher. For more information, contact the Summer Quest office at summerquest@collegiate-va.org.

Woodworking for Upper Schoolers – Adults
Pricing: 8 workouts = $200 16 workouts = $360 23 workouts = $460
Steve Hart Rising 9th Graders – Adults Tuesday, June 16 – Thursday, July 18 6 – 8:30 p.m. $170 This camp allows for an immersion in the world of fine woodworking through the safe use of bronze planes, straight and curved chisels, specialty saws, measuring and marking tools. While woodworking at Collegiate aligns easily with craft, it also affords individuals an avenue for artistic expression. Last summer this camp provided a memorable venue for some parent/child pairs to attend and work together as a family. Separate individuals – whether adult or teen – will also find this to be an engaging experience. Each participant will build a Hepplewhite-style end table (walnut or cherry), and those who built a table in a previous term will have opportunities for an alternate project. Core project designs will be sufficiently developed to allow for all work to be completed during the camp term and the emphasis is on developing a plan and executing it to conclusion. The process will mimic an 18th-century master/ apprentice model whereby an adult craftsman would literally work alongside another individual – designing, cutting, shaping, and fitting assorted components into a final product. Come join us to increase the wisdom within your hands, make some noise with a mallet, and cut some long wood shavings on the way to a beautiful result. Steve Hart has taught woodworking at Collegiate School for 14 years. He is an attorney who has worked for the same period of time in the Collegiate Development Office as Planned Giving Officer. For more information, contact Steve Hart at shart@collegiate-va.org.
• Participant can attend morning and/or evening training sessions. • Child care can be arranged as needed for an additional fee. • Each participant will be required to complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q). KickStart fitness is not your average workout. There are no machines, no boring routines and best of all, there’s something for everyone. Our training methods have been proven at the highest levels of competitive sport to improve your physical performance and energize your personal fitness goals and self-confidence. KickStart fitness is changing the face of Sport Performance Training in Richmond. If you’re ready to make breakthroughs you never thought possible, KickStart is for you. What do you do in a KickStart class? A typical KickStart training session will incorporate a dynamic warm-up, a period of interval training with movements that will have you squat, lunge, push, pull, brace and rotate. These workouts are designed to maintain an elevated heart rate to extend the benefits of strength training and endurance building. We focus on proper movement and technique to ensure maximum benefit. Instead of relying on a series of machines to get you through a workout, you learn to rely on your own body and your own strength to propel you towards breakthroughs you never thought possible. Every day is different. There are always new challenges to take on and new goals to strive for. It’s time to stop making excuses and take a step toward being in the best shape of your life. Hurry...space is limited to the first 25 eager participants! For more information, contact Will O’Brien at wobrien@collegiate-va.org.
