Dam pedestrian access in budget
NEW pedestrian access will be part of a $10 million update of the Wellington Dam bridge. The new access will allow visitors to get a safer and unobstructed view of the dam mural which continues to attract tourists in record numbers. Design work for the project has been started and construction is expected to get underway in 2023 and be completed during the 2023/24 financial year. The $10 million project is funded in the State Government’s 2022/23 state budget to be announced today (Thursday). The 56-year-old bridge was closed this week due to the increase in traffic following the completion of the dam mural last year. The new pedestrian footpath will be on the bridge’s dam-side, Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said the new bridge will enable more people to take in the mural from a safe vantage point. “Tourism in Collie is growing at a rapid pace and the government is supporting this growth by continuing to invest in projects that accelerate the region’s transformation into a vibrant tourism destination,” she said. Water and Forestry Minister Dave Kelly said the design of the bridge will improve the visitor experience. “It will enable an enhanced, safe experience for the many visitors that are now coming to the dam”.
