History

C O U R T E S Y O F T H E A LV E Y F A M I LY

St Lucia — one of Brisbane’s most desirable suburbs — is a coveted neighbourhood rich in historic and cultural heritage.

ST LUCIA

9

St Lucia has a fascinating history. Due to its rich alluvial soil, from the mid-1800s it was a productive farming area growing potatoes, pumpkins, bananas, cotton and sugar. There were also dairy and cattle farms. William Dart built a horsepowered sugar mill on the banks of the river near the present-day university boat shed.

Boatbuilding began around 1880, making everything from dinghies to large pleasure yachts. During World War 2, Francis Ygosse applied skills learned in the Dutch navy to build patrol boats and barges for both the Australian and American forces. His business continued until the mid-1960s.

There was also other manufacturing in the area, including a joinery and a woven fencing factory. The site of 160 Macquarie was a factory producing the famous Alvey fishing reels from 1920. Alvey reels are known throughout Australia, with more than two million sold.

Growing international demand forced the company to move to a larger factory in Carole Park and by late 1978 most of the operations had moved there. This local business continues to produce fishing reels for national and international customers today, enjoying a century of success begun right here.

THE VISION / ROTHELOWMAN

Every inspired design begins by exploring the local context and setting. This exceptional site offered a once-in-a-lifetime, direct north-facing, Brisbane riverfront opportunity. Our vision was to embrace the subtropical climate and river in all its fascination, encapsulating the very best in affluent luxury apartment living. The building design is an elegantly poised tower balanced on a series of pilotis creating a sense of lightness and volume to the architecture. Its layered outer shell, open apertures and framed views convey a sense of permeability, with a strong connection to the surroundings. There are subtle allusions to the location’s maritime history in design elements that draw upon the traditional structures of boats and ships. Our uncompromising architectural vision gains beauty from its honesty, and the overarching design philosophy allows simplicity to prevail over complexity. The architectural play — revealing and concealing through layering and textural interest — provides these contemporary luxury apartments with a distinctive sophistication.
