The question is NOT why Anything Exist, but if anything DOES NOT exist.
BOUNDARIES Project Type: Community Park Date: Winter. 2016 Location: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Team: Nermeen Aboudawood Hyunji Kim
INVESTIGATION During a class activity before we start our design, our professor asks us a question: “What is Community? No one answer the question with something physical, they are memory, communication, love, sharing, experience and etc. My team wants to create a place where people can root, a space where they belong and curious about their past, to follow their curiosity to understand what is value. To allow people value what they have, we choose to reveal the unseen, the boundaries, the edges. Edge is what bring people together, Boundary might be separating us physically but deep inside, it is what connects us; it is the edge that we are curious about.
Boundaries are Connector For this intense mapping assignment, my team investigates in the idea of edges and boundaries. Edge and Boundary are an end or a beginning of one space to another. It is the space in between. It is where two opposite meet. It is where experience happens, people are attracted to the edge because they are curious of the unknown. We look into the boundaries in Santa Fe, where land meets water; where landscape meets architecture, and lastly, where Private meets Communal.
Rancho Viejo Rancho Viejo project site covers 2 acres and is located in the center of the village. It is surrounded by single family houses, town-homes, and commercial spaces. The site is mostly activated by residents but there is a disconnection between the resident and this space.
The objective is to design through the windows of the residents and see what they expect from a community plaza. We investigated in a grid system that comes from the existing surrounding. Circulated walkways, flexible and fixed programs, community garden, playground, and even different heights of tress all evolved from the grid and are designed to activate the edge to bring the spirit of the community into the park.
What is our RESPONSIBILITIES as the Dominant Species or as Landscape Architects to our habitat?
PERSISTS Project Type: Urban Design / Land Art Date: Fall. 2016 Location: Irwindale, California
Team: Nermeen Aboudawood Alvin Alvarez - Stephanie Cruz
IRWINDALE Irwindale is a city with a deep industrial history. Making contributions to both the construction of the California highway system and Los Angeles’ oil production, Irwindale is one of the most important yet ignored cities in the state. Much of the industrial production has ended but the physical and environmental impacts persist.
PHASE 1 The topography of the site will not be altered but merely touched by historical representations. Using the quarry’s depth as a measure of time, elements such as water, light poles, and material stripes, will differ in height according to the zone it is located in. Planting is introduced as hydroseeding, using iron and mineral tolerant plants; some of which are invasive, in hope that they provide healthy nutrients back into the soil.
PHASE 2 In keeping with the function of the Manning Pit being a temporary container for water coming from the Santa Fe Dam, the site transforms from a sculpture into a performance. This flooding acts as a catalyst, bringing in aggregate from the dam as well as accelerating the decomposition of any dead plant material. The constant pumping of water breaks apart the material stripes, pushing gravel and rock toward the center of the pit. When flooding has dispersed, the idea is that the soil is prepped to be reseeded and Phase 1 may begin again.
PHASE 3 After the effects of Phase 1 and Phase 2 have accumulated over several decades, this is when Phase 3 becomes much more apparent. Phase 3 takes the place of Phase 1 in the cycle as the systems on the site begin to deteriorate and lose impact.

MODULAR PLANES Project Type: Furniture Design Date: Winter. 2016 Location: Environmental Design Building Cal Poly Pomona
Team: Nermeen Aboudawood Justin Sun
MODULAR PLANE Mudular Planes show a new perspective of vertical and horizontal planes and how they could be organized and arranged to appear differently. The planter in between the two benches helps emphasize the vertical plane emerging from the two horiontal planes. The design and material follow the industrial style to fit in with the surrounding building and sculpture. Using pressure treated wood create a sense of contrast with the rusted metal sculpture and concrete building and ground.

Field of Void
This garden intends to make the user visualize throughout their experience. My overall design concept was to create a field condition through creating a field of voids. There are a variety of depressions throughout the garden which creates an undulated landscape. At first sight, this undulation can disorient the users. The absence of a path in my design was intentional, as I did not want to provide a limited route for people, but an entirely different experience than a predetermined path. The walls make the users feel trapped as they view them and realize that the walls provide a reflection of the landscape, which makes the viewer perceive the landscape and the architecture as a seamless whole.

In other words, “making the invisible visible.” This accommodates the absence of the path as it gives a sense of direction. Also, one must walk through the walls clockwise in order to view past the walls and see the landscape. Walking the opposite way would only give you a view of the walls. Thus, walking around clockwise also creates a moiré effect with the walls and the undulating landscape. People will obtain different perceptions of this garden depending on their movement.

Rather than implementing objects to create my field condition,
I instead implented depression into my topography. Similar to Team: Indivudual a flock of birds, my field of void is not set on a gird but it has a
