THE AMAZING TIME TRAVEL I snuggled up on my grandparent’s sofa, oblivious to the lashing rain outside. There was never anything to do at their house and we had to visit them every weekend! It was so boring without my X-Box and their TV looked like it belonged in a doll’s house. I pulled out a book from their bookcase that I’d never seen before and dusted it off. It was titled: A brief history of covid; 2020-2023. We had been studying the pandemic in school for the last few weeks and I began to eagerly flick through the pages. I could hear the patter of rain on the roof. The dripping of the gutter. The house creaking. My head felt heavy. I closed my eyes to get my breath back. I felt myself shrinking, and I got closer to the pages until I was falling through my own book! Past the plague, past the world wars, past the first man in space. When I landed, feeling dizzy, I looked groggily around. It was eerie, not a sound to be heard. I forced open a narrow gap in the trees and squinted in the sunlight. An elderly gentleman shuffled along the pavement. I ran to catch up to him but when I reached his side, he backed away urgently with a look of concern. Further down the road, I could see a lady waving to her grandchildren through a window as a tear trickled down her old, wrinkled face. Next I saw a smart lady wearing a white face mask. Wait… they had face masks during the pandemic! I recited the page in my head; Face mask: worn by the NHS to protect others. Then I knew for sure. I had travelled back in time! I heard a faint moaning sound from behind me. I whirled around to see a young girl slumped on a park bench looking glum. “Don’t get too close,” warned the girl, edging away. She sighed heavily. “This lockdown is so hard. I’m not sure sitting here counts as exercise but I just had to get out! I used to see my grandparents every weekend and now all I can do is phone them. Sometimes you just want a hug!” I didn’t really know what to say to her so just nodded my head. “I hate not being able to go to school!” she carried on.
