Comprehension
• Read the book aloud and ask children to follow in their books. – Tell children to join in with you as you read. – Hesitate as you read so children can take over reading the next word. • Tell children what you are thinking as you read so they can see how you make links between the words and the story. • Choose a couple of pages to do a ‘rehearsed read’ with children. Show them how to look ahead at the punctuation so they can see questions and exclamations coming up in the text and think about what intonation they want to use. • Ask children to practise reading with expression to a partner. Tell them you are looking forward to hearing them read the pages they have rehearsed.
• Ask children to talk to their partner about the story. Do they know the original fairy tale? How are the stories similar/different? Take feedback. • Ensure children understand the chronology of the story. Use The Elf and the Bootmaker: Resource sheet 2 to retell the story together. • Ask children to use The Elf and the Bootmaker: Resource sheet 2 to retell the story with their partner. Tell them they can write notes on the story map if they wish.
Extending vocabulary • Ask children to look at the elf on page 16. How would they describe her clothes? Take feedback. Use children’s suggestions to build noun phrases, for example: grubby, falling-apart rags; worn, uncomfortable clothes. • Repeat for the picture of the elf in her new clothes on page 20. • Ask children to describe the elf’s clothes on The Elf and the Bootmaker: Resource sheet 2.
