An adventure story

Alessia Trunfio 18/10/2018 12:05

It was over the island ahead, exactly where they were supposed to land. She could see that buildings were torn down and roads were flooded. This was very worrying. The storm was strong enough to rip up trees and blow houses down. What would it do to a plane with a new pilot at the controls? Tara needed help. She asked Ayesha and Ortez, “What should I do? 9

The Wall

Vivian French weaves two magical stories from far-off lands. Selim-Hassan the Seventh tells of a teenager who is determined NOT to follow in his father’s footsteps … that is until he meets his great-great-great-great-grandfather! Whilst in The Wall, a young nomadic girl determines to return her grandmother to the land of her birth … across the Great Wall of China.

Why didn’t I ask Grandmother Pearl the questions that filled my head? All the questions about the wall? I did, sometimes ... but she never answered. She was old – very old. I think perhaps she was my mother’s grandmother, or maybe even older, and her mind floated free like the clouds in the sky. When my mother died she looked after me, but even then she sometimes thought I was one of her own daughters ... all of whom had died long ago. I was sorry that she never answered my questions, but I listened open-mouthed when she told me her stories – wonderful stories of strange places, and a strange people who lived a different life from us.

“They do not move from place to place,” Grandmother Pearl told me. “They have houses. The houses are made of wood, and of stone. The people who are rich live with many beautiful things. Their clothes are made of the softest silk. The silk shimmers and shines. It is embroidered with butterflies and flowers and wonderful birds. There are little whispering rivers. Gardens with snow-white and rose-pink petalled trees. The old ...” and here Grandmother Pearl would sometimes give a little sideways glance at my father “... are treated with veneration. They sit and talk, or play music. Some look at the words of poetry painted on to sheets of thin parchment.”

Having lost my right foot in a boating accident when I was 16, it looked like I would never realise my ambition to be a top sportsperson. But then I got a prosthetic leg and discovered that I could still run and I had a talent for long jump. I became determined to compete in the Paralympics.

I still had to compete in the 200 metres a few days later, so we went back to the Village and recouped. I was really nervous about the 200 metres, because we’d had some problems with my prosthesis when running around the corner and I didn’t have the fitness behind me that I needed, so it was hard going into a race knowing I wasn’t at my prime. But my coach said he didn’t care what happened in the race as long as I went for it, which I did and it was incredible fun. I ended up coming fourth with another PB, so again I was really proud and it was a great way to end my Paralympics. the 200 metres heats
