Look at Them Go Book band: Red B This non-fiction book uses simple mechanics and physics to explain how these devices work: a pull back car, a catapult, a clock, a water blaster, a bike and a hot air balloon.

Practising phonics Phase 3 Warm up: Alien words • Practise the graphemes children know by reading alien words. Write each of these words on a card and decorate it with an alien: zear, foip, shart, thairk. • Tell children these words are the names of aliens. They are not real words. Show children a word: zear. • Ask them to call out any digraphs or trigraphs: ear. Underline the digraphs or trigraphs and dot the sound buttons. • Ask children to sound out and blend the word. • Tip: Do not encourage children to read the word without blending. Do not spell alien words. New: Practise the sounds /ar/ /oo/ /ow/ /ear/ /oi/ /er/ /oo/ /ee/ /ur/ /ai/ /air/ Review: /sh/ /th/ /ch/ /z/ • Introduce the new sounds to practise the Phase 3 sounds in this book.

• Make sure children are confident reading these sounds. • Use Look at Them Go: Resource sheet 1 to introduce the focus sounds: /air/ and /oi/. Encourage children to read the phrase aloud to help them remember the sound each grapheme makes and then say the sound as they trace the letters.

Decoding practice • Practise reading the words on the front page of the book. • Children complete the final activity on Look at Them Go: Resource sheet 1. They read each word, dot and dash it, and finally match it to the correct picture.

Children read • Tell children to read the book aloud. Encourage them to sound out the words and explore the pictures. • Listen to children as they read. • When children have finished reading, ask them to talk with their partner to complete the activity on pages 14–15.

After reading Developing fluency • Read the book aloud and ask children to follow in their books. – Tell children to join in with you as you read. – Hesitate as you read so children can take over reading the next word. • Tell children what you are thinking as you read so they can see how you make links between the words and the story, for example: On pages 6 and 7, I look at the labels to help me understand the sentences. These labels show me the cogs and gears. Children read the labels on another page and work out what information they are giving. • Read the book with expression and ask children to have a go at reading with expression to a partner.

Comprehension • Ask children to talk to their partner about their favourite explanation. Take feedback.

• Each page tells us about how something works. Choose an object and ask children to use the words and pictures to help you explain how it works. Write additional labels together. • Ask children to use the book to help them label the picture on Look at Them Go: Resource sheet 2.

Extending vocabulary Sequencing • Look through the book with children and model adding sequencing words and phrases to each explanation. For example: First push the lever down, then the ball pops off! • Work together to use first, next, after that and finally to sequence the explanations. Add extra description or more technical words to the explanations. • Children add sequencing words to retell the instructions on Look at Them Go: Resource sheet 2.
