Chapter 1 “Can we play together, Tara?” Dani Binns asked her big sister. “When I finish my homework,” replied Tara. “Ten minutes?” Just enough time to choose a toy from the toy box, thought Dani, opening the lid. Every time she chose one, it gave her a job to do and a fun adventure to go with it.

She pulled out a maze puzzle game. As she tilted it, the little metal ball inside rolled around in a circle. Her hand began to tingle. The tingling spread up her arm and around her body. She began spinning and tumbling through space and time …

Chapter 2 When the spinning stopped, Dani found herself on a coastguard base by the sea. She heard a loud whirring noise and turned to see a rescue helicopter on a helipad. A girl and a boy were running towards her, waving. “Get on board!” shouted the boy.

“I’m Asha and this is Tai,” said the girl, climbing up and strapping herself in. “Air-sea rescue Team One.” Dani took a deep breath and clambered up next to Asha.
“No … take the co-pilot seat up front,” instructed Tai. “Hurry! We’ve just received a distress call from a fishing boat ten kilometres out to sea. We have to get there before it sinks!” 5

“Co-pilot?” Dani gulped. “I don’t know how to fly a helicopter!” “Don’t worry,” said Tai. “I’ll show you. This lever takes you up and down. This flight control makes you go forwards, backwards, right and left. The pedals also turn the helicopter left and right.” Dani put her maze game down on the control panel. 6

I’m going to need both hands and all my concentration to do this, she thought. “Let’s get going,” said Tai, pulling up the lever. He pressed the left pedal and moved the flight control forward. Dani’s stomach lurched as they sped towards the darkening storm clouds out to sea. 7
