4 Networks and the effects of using them

Why this unit matters Computer networks help us to organise our data and to access information much more efficiently than simply using stand-alone computers. Junaid works for All Computer Supplies Inc. – the company for which you produced an information sheet in Unit 1 – and is responsible for setting up computer networks. There are many different types of networks, and even stand-alone computers will link to other computers when using the internet. Junaid has to deal with all sorts of enquiries about the networked systems that All Computer Supplies Inc. helps to put together. Here are some of the enquiries that Junaid deals with:

I access the web all the time: playing games, using VoIP to call my friends and downloading music. I also love blogging and tweeting. It just happens through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth – but I don’t know how it works and would like some ideas on how I can apply it to my business. (Interior designer)

I work in a shop and I know that when I scan an item at the till, all sorts of things happen. My till connects with the ordering department, the warehouse, payment and customer loyalty records. It seems as though I’m part of a really big network. Is that true? (Cashier attendant)

Our school has a large network. I don’t know how it works but I overheard someone talking about LANs and WANs. I’m not sure what all that means. I’d like to know – after all, I am the head teacher! (Head teacher)

I’m setting up a network at home so that the whole family can use the same printer and access the internet at the same time. It will be so much easier for me to do online banking and make bookings for theatre and travel tickets. How does my network connect with the business networks when I book my tickets or make a payment? (Parent)

Your practical task

All Computer Supplies Inc. has decided that it would be helpful if the company developed a series of webpages to provide details about how networks operate in personal and business environments. The company has asked you to tackle this task.
