Fossils Nobody has ever seen a living dinosaur. But scientists can work out what they looked like from fossils. Fossils can be formed in many ways. For example, when an animal dies, it may fall into water and get covered by mud. Mud falls on top, pushing down on the layers below and turning it into sedimentary rock. Hard parts of its body, like the bones, are preserved inside the rock as a fossil. 4
