Big Cat Phonics assessment Use the Big Cat Phonics assessments to work out which band of book each child should be reading. Instructional reading level is at 90% word accuracy. This is the correct level of challenge for children when they are being taught to read and when they are practising the phonemes and graphemes they already know. Note: Reading at home: Independent reading level should be at 95% word accuracy, so that children are successful when they are reading without an adult’s support. Of course, this doesn’t mean that parents and carers cannot read and share a wide range of picture books with their child at home. Indeed, this is essential for developing a love of literature and learning a wide range of skills, such as developing a rich vocabulary.

Teacher instructions: termly assessments • Use these assessments every six weeks to check children’s progress. • Start the assessment at the level the child was secure at the last time they were assessed. Do not go back to the beginning. • Use the grouping grid on page 47 to work out which book band is appropriate for each child. • The grouping grid also has guidance on which graphemes to teach at each band of Big Cat Phonics.

Tick each grapheme or word that is read correctly. Circle any word or part of a word that is read incorrectly. Say the sounds. Ask the child to repeat the sounds and blend the word. It is acceptable if a child automatically blends the word without sounding out.

Ask the child to read each sound in order and blend them to read. It is acceptable if a child automatically blends the word without sounding out.

Tell the child that these are nonsense or alien words. They will not make sense! Ask the child to read each sound in order and blend them to read.

Ask the child to read the words without blending. Tell them to say the sounds in their head before reading. If they cannot read the word without blending, draw a wavy line above the word.

Assessing fluency in Orange and Turquoise • Use the fluency extracts to assess the child’s reading speed in words per minute.

Marking the text • • • • •

Tick each word the child reads accurately. Circle any words the child misses out. Write in any additional words the child says. Put a wavy line above any words the child sounds out. Write the number of correctly read words onto the sheet. This is the number of words the child can read per minute.
