Icy places In photos from space, there is not much difference between the North and South Poles. They look icy and lifeless. The North Pole is in the Arctic.

However, big differences appear when we look closer.
The South Pole is in Antarctica.

Extreme temperatures The Arctic and Antarctic are extremely cold. For six months of the year, the sun hardly ever reaches these places.

Scientists measure the temperature of the Arctic and Antarctic. In winter, the Arctic can be about –40° C – that’s over twice as cold as your freezer! But the Antarctic is even colder – about –60° C!

Extreme locations A big difference between the Arctic and Antarctic is what lies beneath the ice. The Arctic is mainly a very large ice sheet floating on the sea. There is some land around it.

Antarctica is land. Nearly all of it is hidden under an ice sheet.

Icebergs The temperature of the seawater and air is rising, so the ice in the Arctic and Antarctica is melting. Sections of ice crumble away from ice sheets to form icebergs. Most of an iceberg is under the sea.
Icebergs are a danger. They can wreck ships.

Icebergs can collide with ice sheets. The collision can form another iceberg.
