Chapter 1 Tara Binns was excited. She was in the attic of her house, looking for the old costume box. There it was! The box was full of clothes, hats and shoes, but Tara never knew which outfit it was going to give her. The box chose a costume for her and sent her on an adventure to do a job that Tara would never have dreamt of. She lifted the lid and felt a tingling in her arm.

It travelled up Tara’s arm and around her whole body. A shimmering mist swirled up out of the box and surrounded her. She could feel herself spinning through space and time. She closed her eyes and wondered ‌ What will I be today?

Chapter 2 When Tara opened her eyes, she was ‌ in the middle of the sea! She was bobbing gently up and down in the water. So why didn’t she feel cold? She pulled down her mask and peered beneath the surface of the water. Everything was brilliantly clear. 4

She was wearing a wetsuit and there were flippers on her feet. It’s a good thing I can swim, thought Tara. I must be a scuba diver! She lifted her head above water and looked around. Just then, she spotted a grey triangle heading towards her. What’s that? Tara gasped. A fin? Could it be … a shark? Help! 5

Tara peered underwater again. She froze. It was a shark! Its mouth was open as it swam towards her, and she could see rows of sharp, pointed teeth. Then she saw another ‌ and another. Soon they were everywhere. Panic rose up in her like a wave. She knew she should try to stay still, but that was impossible – she needed to kick her legs, or she would drown. She felt sick with fear. 6

The sharks were closing in. Tara was so terrified she could hardly breathe. Suddenly, there was a loud SPLASH! behind her. And the sharks scattered. She lifted her head out of the water.

A girl wearing a wetsuit and air tank had landed in the water next to her. Tara felt relief flooding through her that she wasn’t alone with the sharks. “I’m Ayesha,” said the girl, shaking the water out of her eyes, “and this is Ortez.” She pointed to a boy in the boat. He smiled as he lowered a tank down to Tara.

Ortez put on his own tank and allowed himself to fall backwards over the side of the boat. SPLASH! “We’re marine biologists, learning about pollution in the ocean,” Ayesha continued. “But we’re in danger!” Tara cried, as Ortez surfaced. “There are sharks in the water!” 9
