Chapter 1

The postman hadn’t even reached the door before Twiggy began to bark. The soft crunch of his boots on the driveway was enough to wake her from her morning nap, with her ears pricked and tail pointing upwards.

Rafferty huffed and snuggled back into his bed. He’d never been that noisy when he was a puppy, he was sure of it.

“Be quiet, Twiggy,” said the humans, all at once.

A handful of letters dropped onto the welcome mat, and Twiggy picked one up between her teeth, her tail wagging like a windscreen wiper.

6

“I’ll take that,” said Mum, gently sliding the letter out from between Twiggy’s teeth. She gave a disgruntled “woof” and joined Rafferty by the radiator.

“I don’t know why you’re in such a good mood, Twiggy. Do you know what tonight is?”

Rafferty stretched and rubbed his face against the soft fabric of his bed.

Twiggy cocked her head to the side. “I haven’t a clue. Why?”

Rafferty looked fearfully at the window and said in a hushed voice, “Tonight is what the humans call Firework Night.”

Twiggy didn’t like the sound of that. Her ears flattened against her head and a soft “woof” escaped from her mouth. “What is a Fire Work?”

7

“A firework is a bright flash in the sky and a huge, terrifying boom.” Rafferty’s eyes widened.

“It’s the worst night of the year.”
