Can things really disappear into thin air?

Where did it go? Have you ever wondered where something went? Little things often go missing – like your pen lid, one of your socks … or the last biscuit! But bigger things can vanish too. Things like precious treasure, ships or old buildings. Sometimes it happens slowly, sometimes fast. Some things that are lost get found again, but others remain a mystery forever …

Can cities disappear? A city swallowed by the jungle The Amazon jungle is in South America. It’s full of animals, birds, insects and plants. People live there too, in small villages, but local legends say that there was once a city deep in the jungle. In 1925, British explorer Percy Fawcett set out to find the city. He called it “the Lost City of Z”, but he never found it. Instead, Percy got lost in the jungle and vanished. He was never seen again.

Much later, explorers found traces of buildings, roads and town squares in the same area where Percy had looked. Long ago, thousands of people lived there, but the area was now overgrown with trees and plants. Could this be the lost city?
Today, the lost city is known as Kuhikugu.

A city covered in volcanic ash and lava Pompeii was an ancient Roman city, built near Vesuvius, a large volcano. It had temples, theatres, markets and cafés. The Romans thought Vesuvius was extinct and wouldn’t erupt, but they were wrong.

In October, 79 BCE, Vesuvius blew up. First, a cloud of smoke rose into the sky, then rocks and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. Lots of people escaped, but some sheltered in their homes. The next day, hot rock, ash and dust flowed down the sides of the volcano. It surged over Pompeii, burying the city six metres (20 feet) deep. In the 1800s, people uncovered the city and found it was perfectly preserved under all the ash.
Today, you can visit Pompeii and see all the old buildings and streets.
