Book 6 (Age 10-11)

Sample from Teacher Notes Book 2

Simple long vowel sounds and compound words are also included at this stage, as are basic diagonal joins.

In considering print for labels and captions, children are asked to use spatial knowledge to determine which words fi t best in which frame. Teachers may also wish to discuss the notion of ‘centring’ printed signs and labels so that letters are not bunched together at the beginning or end of the frame.

Practise these letter joins by writing the words in the box.

These pages continue practice of some common vocabulary in a joined hand. In each case, the task on the sheet could be related to one that children might use in the classroom. These sheets might be kept in a handwriting folder or fi le, to be referred to when writing.

Teachers may wish to introduce this page through a whole-class, shared or guided group session.

The fi rst page sets out a simple reminder sheet for tasks during a particular week. Children might use the sheet for their fi rst attempt and then make their own version, perhaps to remind them of their independent tasks for each week. The class might discuss things that need to be remembered at the weekend. Once completed, this sheet could be stored by each child as a reference for their unaided writing.

This book provides exemplar tasks that demonstrate how both joined writing and print may be used in practice. Children will also begin to practise other letters that join from the top rather than the bottom, e.g. ‘wh’.

This section deals with the presentation of some important vocabulary in upper case and lower case letters. Children are asked to relate their handwriting practice to tasks that have a real purpose.
