Between taking tests, completing homework, applying for financial aid and taking time out for personal business, college students are overwhelmed with the amount of responsibilities they have to handle.

A popular method people employ to alleviate stress is to engage in some form of physical activity. Students at GPC are encouraged to take advantage of the Health & Wellness center. “My job is to try to provide programs and

activities that allow students to exercise and wind down from whatever stressful day they might have had, � said Anthony Edwards, GPC Health & Wellness Coordinator.

The Health & Wellness center offers: yoga, Zumba, pilates, fitness boot camps, a state of the art recreation center, intramural sports and more.

Beginning January 28, the center will host its first nine week fitness program, titled Biggest Winner.

A Stress Confession

By Troi Charity Collegian Staff Finals and tuition are the most stressful components of my college life. The thoughts of passing all my classes and finding money to pay for the next semester is seriously hell on earth.

Throughout the year, stress affects my mood. I become shorttempered, moody and just not a pleasant person to be around.

Over the years I have been able to detect when I have taken on too many responsibilities and I can brace myself for the impact of

having everything due for each of my classes at about the same time.

I play a lot of video games on the weekend, the more violent the better. I do a lot of reading and writing for my own enjoyment. I also watch all the shows that I have missed during the week and gossip with my friends about all the t.v. drama.

I can over work myself untill I'm sick and I have done it but I've learned that working all the time is not good for my health. I've learned to balance my classes and extracurricular activities so that I have can some me time.

Jaguars take the first win of the season Men’s Basketball welcome the new year with a 64-63 victory

On January 5, the Jaguars took the victory in their first game of the year against local rival team Atlanta Metro College with a 64-63 win against the Trailblazers.

This was the third season in a row that the GPC Jaguars faced Atlanta Metro in the Trailblazer’s gym and have taken the win every time.

With the help of Julian Reese’s 3-pointer in the final minutes, the Jaguars managed to pull the win at the end bringing them to their fourth straight victory in this season.

The Jaguars are 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association.

Travien Geter led with 11 scored points, followed by Reese who ended with 10 points, and Junious Prowell with

nine points and four steals for the Jaguars.

Atlanta Metro, who is 3-12 and 2-5, was led throughout the night by Saiquan Terry who was the lead scorer with 25 points.

The first half was a struggle for the Jaguars as they fell behind 18-17. By intermission AMC continued in the lead with a score of 30-25 The Trailblazers maintained the lead with up to 12 points early in the second half, but everything shifted as Geter went in for the shot with the assistance of Caleb Hayes.

Alek Milosavljevic’s shot, with the help of Reese, brought the Jaguars up cutting the lead 49-43.

Terry’s attempt to stop the Jaguars got him to score two awesome 3 pointers in the following 4 minutes, but Hayes put the Jaguars back ahead 59-58 on a long 3-pointer with just 2 minutes remaining on the clock.

Reese followed after with a field goal, and then later as

the last minute ticked, he went in for his highlight 3 pointer to give GPC their 64-60 lead.

As the clock marked the last 17 seconds, Terry dropped in three foul shots, cutting the gap to one, but GPC managed to keep Terry away for the final seconds and the Trailblazers failed to get any good shots before the buzzer.

“We played hard defense the second half ” said head coach Barney. “We were a little rusty in the first half ”. Since the winter break, the Jaguars had not played since their last game on Dec. 10th.

The Jaguars next home games are scheduled to be January 16 against Chattahoochee Tech at 7:30 p.m. followed by East Georgia College on January 19 at 3 p.m. both of which are on Decatur campus.

On Jan 21., GPC students and members of the community will celebrate the school day off and join together for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

The MLK day of service will be facilitated by Mary Elizabeth TylerBoucebci.

Boucebci posted flyers for the event informing prospective volunteers of the mission for the national holiday, “ The day of service is for remembering Dr. King in a way he would have wanted. It is a time to think about the communities we come from.”

Martin Luther King Day of Service is a college wide event funded by the Student Activity Fund. GPC has 14 different sites for community work.

In order to participate in the Day of Service, students must sign up.

Events will be conducted from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Participants will be given a t-shirt, refreshments during the event.

SGA looks to use the new semester to bond with the student body

By Sergio Jewell Collegian Staff On January 11, GPC’s Student Government Association met to discuss their priorities for 2013.

Nibio Downer, Clarkston SGA president, stated that he wanted to focus on, “opening up SGA”. He further explained that he would like to close the gap between the students and the SGA by being more involved in events, communicating and familiarizing themselves with students in the process.

The SGA also discussed ‘Welcome Week’.‘Welcome Week’ takes place from January 22 through the 25. The purpose of the week is to help new GPC students get acquainted with their campus/surroundings, using activities to encourage conversation among GPC’s diverse student body.

Most of the events discussed are in the developmental stages, but they were very ambitious.

One of many ideas that were tossed around involved turning the tennis courts into ice rinks, letting students skate while serving hot chocolate and other condiments.

Nadim also had a proposition for an event that was more environmental-based. "Going Green" is a scavenger-hunt where Clarkston campus students would hunt for trash and whomever accumulated the most wins a prize. The prizes and flyer design are still being discussed.

During the meeting, Senator Christopher Johnson made it a priority to focus on the smoking policy.

He presented to SGA a redesigned map of the smoking areas at the Clarkston Campus. Johnson also suggested putting up larger ‘No Smoking’ signs because the current ones are too difficult to identify.

Johnson stated that he will meet with campus officers soon about enforcing the policy.

Before the first SGA gathering of 2013 concluded, Stephen Moore began speaking on the next event on the calendar about GPC’s EDGE Initiative ,which has organized an MLK Day of Service to celebrate for Dr. Martin Luther King’s impact in society and the community for GPC. On January 21, Moore plans to get everyone involved with SGA to attend the function which will give GPC students a chance to meet their student government in a comfortable environment.

Sculpture of Controversy

By Leslie Mele Collegian Staff The most recent memorial erected in Washington, D.C. on August 22, 2011, depicts and honors Dr. King through construction, but also has a bit of controversy surrounding it.

In 1996, Congress passed a joint resolution to allow for the 120 million dollar construction of the monument, which is located on the northwest corner of the tidal basin adjacent to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial and across from the Jefferson memorial.

The most controversial aspect of the King Memorial is its chosen sculptor, Lei Yixin. A Chinese nationalist. Complaints were made that a statue of Dr. King should have enlisted the talents of an African American sculptor or at least an American, such as Ed Dwight, who designed small statues given to large donors of the project. Instead Lei was chosen

based off his expertise of a statue of this magnitude.

The second controversy surrounding the monument is, "I was a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness."

The issue with this quote is that it misrepresents what King said which was, "If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice, say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness.

And all of the other shallow things will not matter."

Maya Angelou told the Washington Post that by omitting the "if," "the quote makes Dr. Martin Luther King look like an arrogant twit." She went on to say, "He was anything but that. He was far too profound a man for that four-letter word to apply."

Steps are in effect to remove the incorrect quote and replace it with a proper one.

A Note from Public Safety Law enforcement pleads to students to stop crime on campus

By Sergeant Bart Husley Contributor Many people believe that it is solely law enforcement’s responsibility to keep them safe from crime. They long for the days of being able to leave their doors unlocked without fear of theft or violence. However, this is not the case today. Citizens must step up to the plate and take responsibility for helping the police keep them safe.

Police agencies all across Metro-Atlanta have reached out to the public continuously, imploring them to follow some simple crime prevention steps to prevent this crime. Despite public education efforts, citizens are continuing to be “volunteer” victims. They go to the electronics store and purchase some items and then go about their day leaving their car unattended without unloading their expensive merchandise. When they return to their car, an observant criminal has stolen what was of value.

Since January 2012, unincorporated DeKalb County has experienced 4,107 entering autos

(car break-ins). What is frustrating is that theft, from a vehicle, is one of the simplest crimes in the world to prevent.

Make yourself a difficult person to victimize. Just take these simple steps: Always lock your vehicle, Do not leave valuables in plain sight, lock items in your trunk or take them home, park vehicle in the driveway or garage, for bank deposits or withdraws alternate between times and routes and be aware of your surroundings.

We should address the individuals who commit this type of crime. Many of the perpetrators are juveniles or young adults. This crime is a felony; regardless of the value of the item stolen from the car. It carries a possible sentence of not less than one year nor more than five years for conviction of a single count. Remember, engaging in this type of behavior could alter one’s future in a very significant way.

Falcons VS. Packers

By Sergio Jewell Collegian Staff The Falcons began the 2012-2013 season with an emphasis on saving their best football for the second season. After three straight post-season defeats, Mike Smith and the rest of the Dirty Birds are ready to prove to NFL enthusiasts across the nation that they are the team to beat in the playoffs. After last year’s pitiful defeat against the eventual Super Bowl Champion New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons Owner Arthur Blank decided that his team needed a change in philosophy on both sides of the ball. General Manager Thomas Dimitroff settled the issue by terminating former coordinators Mike Mularkey and Brian Van Goarder and brought in two new faces with more know-how as far as utilizing talent.

Experienced defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and creative offensive coordinator Dirk Koettier joined the Falcons with only one goal in mind. To have the team playing at the Mercedes-Benz Dome come February.

The addition of coordinator Dirk has really brought out the best in Matt Ryan.

He’s put up career bests in all statistical categories and has a total quarterback rating of 74.5, which is good enough to rank 4th in the NFL behind Denver’s Peyton Manning, New England’s Tom Brady, and San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick.

One of the criticisms on Ryan before this season was that he lacked the arm strength to attack defenses deep. This year, he has definitely focused on completing more passes downfield. His work in the offseason resulted in him breaking Atlanta’s franchise record for passing yards in a season (4,719) and is averaging 7.7 yards per throw. Even in my earliest assessment of Matt Ryan, I knew he had all the tools to be a top ten or even five QB. He works and studies hard, is very

intelligent, well spoken, and is a leader of men. The only thing keeping him out of elite company was Mike Smith’s love of playing conservative and running the football. Now that he has coordinator that can design plays to his strengths, Ryan’s best football may be yet to come.

Even with Matt Ryan’s emergence, the importance of balance hasn’t left Mike Smith’s philosophy. The days of Turner averaging 100 yards per carry may be gone, but we still have the threat of a run game with Jason Snelling and role-player Jacquizz Rodgers. Defenses will also have to deal with the threat of three ProBowl receivers in Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez.

Even Harry Douglas has shown he can be a dual-threat playing in the slot while fulltime punt-return duties.

Mike Nolan has had just as big of an impact on defense as Dirk did on offense.

Atlanta is currently 5th in points allowed; holding opponents to just under 19 (18.7) points a game. While D-Block (what the defense refers to themselves) gives up a lot of yards on the ground and through the air, they have found ways to keep teams out of the endzone. They’re also good at forcing turnovers, accumulating 31 for the season.

This is a defense that likes to take a lot of risks but when they do it usually pays off.

Atlanta is a team that prides themselves on playing as one. There is a lot of pressure on head coach Mike Smith to win it all this year. Throughout the season, the team has responded very well to pressure. Seven of their 13 games were determined by seven points or less. Atlanta always had talent but this season I think they showed that they have the grit to make a deep playoff run to the SB. All the Falcons have to do now is show that they can win games when it’s ‘Win or Go Home’

By Veejai Ashby Collegian Staff The Super Bowl, one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year, is quickly upon us and there will be two teams left standing playing in the Louisiana Superdome. On February 3, the two teams battling for the prized Lombardi trophy will be the Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos. With that being said, I believe that the winner of this game will be the ‘cheeseheads.’ I’m not discounting the Broncos though. Despite an injury to RB Willis McGahee, back-up and former Georgia Bulldog Knowshon Moreno has rushed for over 500 yards and 4 touchdowns, proving to be a rushing threat. And with the blockbuster offseason addition of QB Peyton Manning, he’s transformed Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker into premier wide receivers. Not to mention that elite top 10 defense headlined by OL Von Miller.

Now it may seem all well and good in Denver but there are reasons to panic in the mile high city. First off, the Packers have the best quarterback in the game in 2011 MVP Aaron Rodgers. Returning WR Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson haven’t been

readily available all season and need to attack the Denver’s cornerbacks. Another boost on the team is LB Clay Matthews, and with 13 sacks on the season, getting to Manning is going to be a high priority if the Packers expect to win given his low mobility.

A glaring weakness for the Packers in recent years has been the lack of a run game, not having had a 100-yard rusher in over 30 consecutive games. A diamond in the rough though has been RB DuJuan Harris who has gotten to start near the end of the season due to injuries to Cedric Benson and Alex Green. Harris is a quick downhill runner with the ability to catch the ball on short passes, dump off screens, play action waggles and bootlegs and has proven an effective weapon for A-Rod. Ultimately what will bring the title back to Titletown will be an offensive onslaught and heavy defensive pressure. Even with Manning looking to be the first QB to start and win a Super Bowl with two different teams it’s a slight mismatch disadvantage for the Broncos. The game will be close, epic, old fashioned, wild wild west shootout with the Packers coming away with it 35-30.
